Erskine Hall provides nursing, residential and dementia care. Inside the impressive, purpose-built home, they offer a warm welcome to long and short stays, including care for those living with Parkinson’s or Huntington’s care. Respite bookings can be made in advance if planning a holiday or break.

Based in a quiet suburb of Northwood, on the outskirts of Watford. There are plenty of peaceful spots and social spaces to spend time in. Residents have a choice of five lounges, where they can grab a book and cosy up in one of the armchairs or catch up with loved ones over coffee and cake. There’s an inviting terrace on the first floor, large patio area and lots of garden space that residents are free to explore, too. The home also benefits from a cinema room, hairdressing room with nail bar too.

There's a great atmosphere and the staff encourage residents to get involved as much as they’d like. To help residents feel at home, they take the time to get to know them. The home can then tailor activities to their interests and hobbies too. From activities such as community quizzes, crafts and flower arranging to tea dances and fetes, there is so much for residents to enjoy.

The chefs prepare a range of wholesome meals for residents to enjoy in the social dining area or in the comfort of their own room. They also talk to each resident about their likes, dislikes and any special dietary needs when they move in. That way, their food is cooked just right.

This care home is good but could be great if they employed more carers. The carers they have, on the whole are dedicated, hard working but really are put under too much stress due to the lack of staff. This result in bells not being answered for a much longer time than one would like, putting the residents
themselves under stress, especially if they need to go to the toilet. Their dignity is then compromised. There is as new manager who has brought new life to the home, but I'm sure would be unable to put pressure on BUPA for more staffing?? The grounds to end on a high note are simply beautiful.

My mother aged 92 was brought into Erskine Hall on 3rd March 2015. She had been in hospital for 13 weeks. She had become bedridden and doubly incontinent. Her room was clean and she was well looked after. She had a limited diet and ate only eggs for virtually every meal and yoghurt and ice cream.

Overview of Review Score

The Review Score of 9.8 (9.827) out of 10 for Erskine Hall Care Home is based on a) the Average Rating and b) the number of positive Reviews.

  1. The Average Rating is 4.8 out of 5 from 23 Reviews in the last 24 months.
  2. The score for the number of positive Reviews is 5.0 out of 5 from 23 positive Reviews in the last 24 months.

Detailed Breakdown of Review Score

The maximum Review Score for a Care Home is 10, which is made up from the Average Rating of Reviews (maximum of 5 points) and the Number of Reviews (maximum of 5 points) in the last 24 months:

  1. 5 Points are available for the Average Rating from all Reviews in the last 24 months. The Average Rating of 4.827 for Erskine Hall Care Home is calculated as follows: ( (232 Excellents x 5) + (33 Goods x 4) + (7 Satisfactorys x 3) ) ÷ 272 Ratings = 4.827
  2. 5 Points are available for the number of Positive Reviews in the last 24 months. A Positive Review is defined as any Review with an 'Overall Experience' of '4' or '5' (out of a max rating '5'). The 5 Points relating to the number of positive Reviews for Erskine Hall Care Home is based on 23 positive Reviews in the last 24 months and is calculated as per below:

The 5 points available are broken down as follows:

    1. 4 points are available for the first 20 Positive Reviews in the last 24 months; 3 points for the first Positive Review, 0.125 Points for each of the next four Positive Reviews, 0.05 Points for the next five Positive Reviews, and finally 0.025 Points for the next ten Positive Reviews. (1st = 3.000, 2nd = 0.125, 3rd = 0.125, 4th = 0.125, 5th = 0.125, 6th = 0.050, 7th = 0.050, 8th = 0.050, 9th = 0.050, 10th = 0.050, 11th = 0.025, 12th = 0.025, 13th = 0.025, 14th = 0.025, 15th = 0.025, 16th = 0.025, 17th = 0.025, 18th = 0.025, 19th = 0.025, 20th = 0.025) 3 + 0.125 + 0.125 + 0.125 + 0.125 + 0.05 + 0.05 + 0.05 + 0.05 + 0.05 + 0.025 + 0.025 + 0.025 + 0.025 + 0.025 + 0.025 + 0.025 + 0.025 + 0.025 + 0.025 = 4
    2. 1 point is available for the number of Positive Reviews reaching 20% of the registered maximum number of service users in the last 24 months. If this number is partially reached, then that proportion of 1 point is given. eg a Care Home registered for a maximum of 50 service users has to reach 10 Positive Reviews to receive 1 point, if it has 7 reviews it will receive 0.7 points. 20% of the 74 registered maximum number of service users is 14.8, which has been reached with 23 Positive reviews. Points = 1
  3. When a Review is submitted by someone who has previously submitted a Review, only the latest Review will count towards the Review Score.
  4. If a Care Home does not have a review in the last 24 months, then it will not have a Review Score.
