Highfield Nursing Home is a beautiful converted Victorian Gentleman's Residence that is now fitted and fully-resourced for modern care requirements, with the addition of a purpose-built extension specifically designed for dementia patients.

A secluded outdoor courtyard is popular with residents, as is the welcoming communal lounge area where they can enjoy the daily scheduled activities which also include trips out or, if preferred residents can enjoy some quiet time in one of the quiet seating areas. Fresh, homemade meals can be enjoyed in the dining area.

Other facilities at Highfield include a hairdressing salon, an all inclusive laundry service and access to video calling to keep in touch with family and friends.

From day one, the home is structured around person-centred goals, with the aim of promoting independence, supporting a relaxing lifestyle and better quality of life.

My overall experience at the Highfield Nursing Home was extremely good. Management and staff went to great lengths to help me rehabilitate after a spell in hospital. Care staff were quickly on hand at any time to attend to my needs, both day and night. Nothing was too much trouble.
Reply from Diana Nisbet, Marketing Executive at Highfield Nursing HomeThank you so much for taking the time to submit your very positive comments on your recent stay at Highfield, whilst recuperating after a spell in hospital. I would like to express my sincere thanks to all the nursing staff at Highfield Nursing Home for all the care and attention shown to my mother in law throughout her stay at Highfield.
My wife and I were comforted in the knowledge that the team were so caring and professional and always acted in my
mother in laws best interest.
This care and attention allowed my mother in law to pass away peacefully and with dignity and for that we will always be grateful.
My wife and I would have no hesitation in recommending Highfield Nursing Home whether for respite or nursing care.

Thank you does not seem sufficient in the circumstances.

Reply from Jenni Laffoley, Marketing Manager (Brand) at Highfield Nursing HomeWe are so sorry for the loss of your mother-in-law, but it was our pleasure to care for her. We are extremely grateful for your kind words about Highfield and the care you received from our team, thank you for your review and for your high recommendation.

My mother has just left Highfield after receiving several weeks of rehab care and physiotherapy following an accident.
The care she received from at Highfield was superb and she made such good progress.
Nothing was too much trouble for the staff and she was treated with kindness and respect.
My brother
and I were so reassured that she was being looked after so well.
Thank you all so much on behalf of myself and my family.
Reply from Alison Reijman, PR Coordinator at Highfield Nursing HomeWhat wonderful words about Highfield. Thank you so much for your valuable feedback. We will pass on your gratitude and appreciation to the caring and physiotherapy teams who supported her. Please keep in touch and let us know how she is getting on.

I was so very fortunate to come to Highfield after breaking my hip. I was enveloped in kindness by all members of staff. Nothing is too much trouble. The physio was the best I have ever had and within twelve days was signed off. I use two crutches - a miracle, I am 86-years-old.

My experience at Highfield Nursing Home has been very disappointing and I feel totally misled. I was led to believe I would get physiotherapy every day and that showers were in place in the "ensuite" rooms. I caught Covid whilst here which made me very ill, my friend had to phone in to make sure that
the nurses would do a set of observations bearing in mind I have an autoimmune disease and am immunocompromised. I was basically left to it. I also had terrible diarrhoea and a bin full of pads wasn't emptied. I used a yellow bag and it wasn't taken away for two days. They never provided me with a room with a shower and I couldn't have a shower. The whole experience has made me feel worse than when I was admitted.
Reply from Alison Reijman, PR Coordinator at Highfield Nursing HomeWe are sorry your experience of Highfield Nursing Home has not been a positive one. As you will see from the other reviews on carehome.co.uk, Highfield is very proud of the standard of care it provides. Many people are extremely happy with its friendly, homely environment and excellent standard of care. The past two years have been extremely challenging for all of us working in care. To help us deliver the best levels of service, we had to recruit temporary staff to help us throughout the pandemic. Could we also clarify that the physiotherapy you received was provided by the NHS and was not part of the package provided by Highfield. We sincerely regret that you feel our level of care during your stay with us did not meet your expectations.

I visited Highfields Nursing Home before my relative booked in, to look around. I was impressed with the pleasant communal areas. Absolutely no nasty smells. Plenty of staff on hand. All the staff are very friendly and caring. Very nice food and plenty of it. My relative was a resident for 5-months.
He was very well cared for and we never had any concerns for his welfare. We could visit unannounced at any time even though it was during Covid-19. There was always a call bell within his reach. He was unable to get out of bed so did not use the dining room, but those that did so sat together and interacted well. During my visits, there were always plenty of staff on hand if needed. The rooms were cleaned daily.

Certain aspects were very shabby, considering how much per week they were charging my Stepfather to stay and receive care. My first experience was when I phoned and I was transferred to someone I assumed was a staff member only to find out that it was his niece who came on the scene less than 8 years
ago. This was extremely unprofessional as was the time my Stepsister enquired about her father and was told, “he’s not dead yet”. The whole time we saw him, he was confined to bed. He didn’t like it there and was always cold with just a sheet and thin blanket over him. His chair had a considerable-sized tear which was, “repaired” with silver duct tape. We have known him for 55 years and when our mother died, we kept in contact offering to help whenever he wanted us even though we both have limited funds and poor health. The hall carpet is faded and in poor condition. We would never have put him in Highfield, instead opting for care at home to end his last days in familiar surroundings.

We are always happy to discuss with you any concerns you may have about the home’s environment.

Highfield Nursing Home has been such a warm and welcoming environment. The staff are extremely kind and caring to all their residents. I found the cleanliness to be outstanding, not just the building but also keeping the residents well presented and preserving their dignity. Highfields has many cleaners,
carers, nurses on hand and there is always someone to talk to. Their end of life was exceptional! I can't thank them enough for making a very difficult and sad experience so comforting.

Dad came in from the hospital after an extremely bad fall. He has received excellent care while here from both NHS and care home staff. He has been looked after both physically and mentally and now is at a point where he will be able to go home. His room is excellent, a good size, bright and airy. Food
has been excellent, everything he likes to eat. Lovely staff, friendly, helpful and caring. Excellent Covid measures in place.

I would not hesitate to recommend Highfield to anyone, from the very first contact with them they have been amazing and the care they provide is second to none. They treat every resident with dignity, compassion and respect and take the time to get to know them as people. The home is always clean, smells
fresh and well maintained and the staff are friendly, welcoming and professional. They have a wide range of activities for the residents to get involved in and have done a fantastic job adjusting to the constraints that Covid has enforced. We have been able to stay in touch through video calls and socially distanced visits in a very safe way and now they are managing the testing to allow closer contact visits very well.
It is such a hard decision to admit a loved one into a nursing home but Highfield worked with us to make it as stress-free as possible and we can’t thank them enough for the outstanding work that they are doing.

Current Review Score: 9.7 (9.733)

Overview of Review Score

The Review Score of 9.7 (9.733) out of 10 for Highfield Nursing Home is based on a) the Average Rating and b) the number of positive Reviews.

  1. The Average Rating is 4.8 out of 5 from 18 Reviews in the last 24 months.
  2. The score for the number of positive Reviews is 4.9 out of 5 from 17 positive Reviews in the last 24 months.

Detailed Breakdown of Review Score

The maximum Review Score for a Care Home is 10, which is made up from the Average Rating of Reviews (maximum of 5 points) and the Number of Reviews (maximum of 5 points) in the last 24 months:

  1. 5 Points are available for the Average Rating from all Reviews in the last 24 months. The Average Rating of 4.808 for Highfield Nursing Home is calculated as follows: ( (178 Excellents x 5) + (32 Goods x 4) + (3 Satisfactorys x 3) + (1 Poors x 2) ) ÷ 214 Ratings = 4.808
  2. 5 Points are available for the number of Positive Reviews in the last 24 months. A Positive Review is defined as any Review with an 'Overall Experience' of '4' or '5' (out of a max rating '5'). The 4.925 Points relating to the number of positive Reviews for Highfield Nursing Home is based on 17 positive Reviews in the last 24 months and is calculated as per below:

The 5 points available are broken down as follows:

    1. 4 points are available for the first 20 Positive Reviews in the last 24 months; 3 points for the first Positive Review, 0.125 Points for each of the next four Positive Reviews, 0.05 Points for the next five Positive Reviews, and finally 0.025 Points for the next ten Positive Reviews. (1st = 3.000, 2nd = 0.125, 3rd = 0.125, 4th = 0.125, 5th = 0.125, 6th = 0.050, 7th = 0.050, 8th = 0.050, 9th = 0.050, 10th = 0.050, 11th = 0.025, 12th = 0.025, 13th = 0.025, 14th = 0.025, 15th = 0.025, 16th = 0.025, 17th = 0.025, 18th = 0.025, 19th = 0.025, 20th = 0.025) 3 + 0.125 + 0.125 + 0.125 + 0.125 + 0.05 + 0.05 + 0.05 + 0.05 + 0.05 + 0.025 + 0.025 + 0.025 + 0.025 + 0.025 + 0.025 + 0.025 = 3.925
    2. 1 point is available for the number of Positive Reviews reaching 20% of the registered maximum number of service users in the last 24 months. If this number is partially reached, then that proportion of 1 point is given. eg a Care Home registered for a maximum of 50 service users has to reach 10 Positive Reviews to receive 1 point, if it has 7 reviews it will receive 0.7 points. 20% of the 46 registered maximum number of service users is 9.2, which has been reached with 17 Positive reviews. Points = 1
  3. When a Review is submitted by someone who has previously submitted a Review, only the latest Review will count towards the Review Score.
  4. If a Care Home does not have a review in the last 24 months, then it will not have a Review Score.

I'm Vlad, and I bring a decade of experience in adult nursing across different settings, with the majority of my time spent at Highfield Nursing Home on the scenic Isle of Wight.

I am proud to be able to support such a passionate team of professionals and to enrich the care we provide for our residents and their families. In my role as Clinical Team Leader, I get to see the clinical aspects of nursing and the management of staff and resources. I am looking forward to future progress and self-development as part of the Hartfordcare family.
