My Dad went into Headington care home to give my Mum a break as she was poorly. My Dad was in there for 3 weeks. We knew he would struggle being away from my Mum, his wife but the care he received was disgusting! When he went in the home he was walking, eating and going to the bathroom with support!
He didn’t want to eat but every time my Mum went they said he wasn’t drinking, like it was my mum’s problem. My Mum always got him to drink by giving the drink to him. He had very poor eyesight so needed to be given a drink. My Mum went every day and he was often on the bed in just a T-shirt and nappy or someone else’s clothing, and on two occasions he was just laying on a rubber mat with no sheet! My Mum was told the Doctor would check on him! Last Friday morning my Mum got a phone call to say they had called an ambulance as his blood pressure was low. When he got to the hospital they said he was seriously dehydrated and his kidneys were falling. He died 2 days later we are heartbroken.

My husband was in Headington Care Home for nine years and was very well looked after. The care home was kept spotlessly clean but I was always disgusted with the quality of the bed linen considering the cost of the care.
Reply from Harriet Sharland, Marketing Assistant at The Headington Care HomeThank you for taking the time to leave such a positive review regarding the care and cleanliness of our home The Headington. We can reassure you that our bed linen is replaced regularly. I'm sorry you feel this standard has not been met in this instance and if you wish to discuss this further, please get in touch using feedback@fshc.co.uk . We are extremely pleased to hear your husband received exceptional care during the 9 years he resided with us and want to thank you again for your kind comments about the care we provide.

My mum has been a resident here since March, and I am as pleased with her life here as I was when she had just arrived. I feel it is very beneficial to her and gives her a very comfortable way of living. There was an issue with one member of the care team that concerned me, so I spoke about it to the
deputy manager, who dealt with it appropriately and very satisfactorily, and I felt very confident of the resolution.

The care provided is superb. Each resident is treated with great respect at all times. The staff are taking exceptional steps to befriend and help even the most challenging residents. As a regular visitor I was always made to feel welcome which was greatly appreciated. Every effort was made to maintain
a calm atmosphere and also a clean environment. Thank you.

The staff were helpful and good-natured. I was always greeted with a friendly smile. The allocated room was always clean and tidy. We were allowed privacy with a polite knock on the door if staff needed entry. The nurses/carers were lovely and caring.

I find this care home a lovely environment for my mum to be living in. The atmosphere and care have certainly improved her life enormously, she seems very contented living here. The kindness and understanding of all of the staff give her a great deal of peace in her life. Mum's surroundings are ideal
for her and so much thought by the staff is put into making her life enjoyable.

My husband has been a resident at The Headington Care Home for about 3-4 months. The manager, carers, nurses and cleaners are all very friendly and welcoming whenever we go to visit my husband, I must also mention the laundry lady who keeps his clothes up to date.
The staff and manager always keep
me informed on his ongoing care and when I leave at the end of a visit I am happy in the knowledge he is being well cared for.
Although my husband can have bad days where he gets quite difficult and verbally angry and doesn't want to comply with personal care or medication, the staff deal with him with patience, calmness and kindness and carry this out in a dignified manner. They help him with his feeding and often pop their head around the door just to check on him. The manager runs the home in a very efficient manner, she is always friendly and approachable and so are all her staff. They all work very hard to provide the best care they can for your loved one.
Reply from Litiana Kurisaqila, Home Manager at The Headington Care HomeThank you, Lavina, for your kind review. It means a lot to me and the team.
We will continue to ensure that we give all our residents the best care they deserve.
Thank you again for trusting us to look after your husband.

My wife was at The Headington care home for only 41 days. She passed away on 9th August 2022 and during that short time, she received the best care possible. The management, carers and nurses treated her with the utmost compassion and care and respected her dignity. If, when the time comes I have any
say, my first choice will be the Headington Care Home.

Very satisfied, on the whole, with the wide range of services provided by the care home. From admin, nursing and overall supervision, continuity is maintained, despite all staff movements. The home doctor and other medical staff keep constant monitoring of the resident's health and ensure appropriate
treatments. A high standard of cleanliness is upheld at all times.

My wife has been at Headington Care Home for over 4 years and continues to be very well cared for. On my most recent visit, during the heatwave, it was very reassuring to see her suitably dressed, calm and cool. It must be very difficult for the staff, but they understand her needs and manage them in
an excellent manner, despite her lack of communication.

It is probably one of the hardest things putting a parent in a care home. The expectations you have about wanting your loved one to be treated like family is really hard to manage. However, at Headington care home I believe my dad is treated like part of a family. We have had some good times and challenging
times but then so do all families. The staff are the home and yes it’s a really tired building and sad looking grounds but look past that and you will find people who care and for me, that is the most important thing. They are spending some money on it but probably not enough. His previous home was like a show home but management and staff were rude and didn’t give an impression they care! I know what I’d rather have. I’m sorry about value for money rating as I think no one should pay after years of hard work. There is a new activity person on board so hopefully, it will improve.
Reply from Katie Barnett, Marketing Administrator at The Headington Care HomeThank you for your feedback. We appreciate you taking the time to share your views. We are so pleased to hear you are happy with the care the team provide and to know that your dad is happy here. We can assure you we are working to refurbish the whole home. For example, the dining room has just been completed and there will be positive changes to come. If you have any concerns at all, please do not hesitate to get in contact with us.

Staff are always welcoming and friendly. There are some staff who have been here for a long time, and that's nice as they get to know my mum. It's always clean, and my mum's room is nice, large and bright. It's clear to see the staff work hard. Thank you for taking care of my mum.

My brother-in-law is a resident at The Headington Care Home. It was his 80th birthday at the weekend and the care home facilitated a lovely party for him and his close family and some dear friends. They decorated the room, made a lovely buffet with a fantastic birthday cake and one of the staff, played
his guitar and my sister and brother-in-law were able to have a jive together! Fabulous family memories.

Dad moved into Headington Care Home at the start of December as his needs could no longer be met at his other home. Mum and I had already been for a visit and we were very impressed from the start. We were shown around by a senior staff member who answered all our questions and everybody we met, both
staff and residents, just looked happy. Within 24 hours of moving in, Dad told us that he was much happier than he had been in his previous home and that he felt safe and cared for. Dad has had dementia since May 2016 and has zero mobility. Every visit we speak to Dad's nurse for an update and we are confident that Dad is being well cared for. Basically, Dad is very happy at Headington where the staff are truly wonderful.

Current Review Score: 9.4 (9.406)

Overview of Review Score

The Review Score of 9.4 (9.406) out of 10 for The Headington Care Home is based on a) the Average Rating and b) the number of positive Reviews.

  1. The Average Rating is 4.4 out of 5 from 20 Reviews in the last 24 months.
  2. The score for the number of positive Reviews is 5.0 out of 5 from 19 positive Reviews in the last 24 months.

Detailed Breakdown of Review Score

The maximum Review Score for a Care Home is 10, which is made up from the Average Rating of Reviews (maximum of 5 points) and the Number of Reviews (maximum of 5 points) in the last 24 months:

  1. 5 Points are available for the Average Rating from all Reviews in the last 24 months. The Average Rating of 4.431 for The Headington Care Home is calculated as follows: ( (138 Excellents x 5) + (64 Goods x 4) + (25 Satisfactorys x 3) + (2 Poors x 2) + (3 Very Poors x 1) ) ÷ 232 Ratings = 4.431
  2. 5 Points are available for the number of Positive Reviews in the last 24 months. A Positive Review is defined as any Review with an 'Overall Experience' of '4' or '5' (out of a max rating '5'). The 4.975 Points relating to the number of positive Reviews for The Headington Care Home is based on 19 positive Reviews in the last 24 months and is calculated as per below:

The 5 points available are broken down as follows:

    1. 4 points are available for the first 20 Positive Reviews in the last 24 months; 3 points for the first Positive Review, 0.125 Points for each of the next four Positive Reviews, 0.05 Points for the next five Positive Reviews, and finally 0.025 Points for the next ten Positive Reviews. (1st = 3.000, 2nd = 0.125, 3rd = 0.125, 4th = 0.125, 5th = 0.125, 6th = 0.050, 7th = 0.050, 8th = 0.050, 9th = 0.050, 10th = 0.050, 11th = 0.025, 12th = 0.025, 13th = 0.025, 14th = 0.025, 15th = 0.025, 16th = 0.025, 17th = 0.025, 18th = 0.025, 19th = 0.025, 20th = 0.025) 3 + 0.125 + 0.125 + 0.125 + 0.125 + 0.05 + 0.05 + 0.05 + 0.05 + 0.05 + 0.025 + 0.025 + 0.025 + 0.025 + 0.025 + 0.025 + 0.025 + 0.025 + 0.025 = 3.975
    2. 1 point is available for the number of Positive Reviews reaching 20% of the registered maximum number of service users in the last 24 months. If this number is partially reached, then that proportion of 1 point is given. eg a Care Home registered for a maximum of 50 service users has to reach 10 Positive Reviews to receive 1 point, if it has 7 reviews it will receive 0.7 points. 20% of the 60 registered maximum number of service users is 12, which has been reached with 19 Positive reviews. Points = 1
  3. When a Review is submitted by someone who has previously submitted a Review, only the latest Review will count towards the Review Score.
  4. If a Care Home does not have a review in the last 24 months, then it will not have a Review Score.

Job Title: Home Manager at The Headington Care Home Joined: 2021

Litiana has worked in the Health and Social Care sector for over 10 years and joined The Headington Care Home as Home Manager in 2021. She has always had a passion for caring for others and sought a career in care to be a helping hand and try to make a difference in the lives of others. Prior to becoming a Home Manager, Litiana has previous experience working as a Care Assistant and Home Trainer.

What do you enjoy most about your job?
I enjoy the opportunity to make a difference in someone else’s life. I am lucky to work alongside a supportive and hard-working team who all share the same values and care about our residents.

What are your favourite hobbies and pastimes?
I am very sociable and enjoy meeting and being around people. I am also a big animal lover, so enjoy looking after them as well as spending time cooking, reading and dancing.

Please tell us about your work experience…
I have worked in the Health and Social Care industry since moving to the UK over 10 years ago. I started my career working as a Care Assistant before becoming a Senior Care Assistant, Home Trainer, Team Leader, Deputy Manager and eventually Home Manager this year.

Before moving to the UK, I worked on various government projects, most of which were community based and focused on alleviating poverty in rural areas and caring for vulnerable people in the community. The people I met and the skills I learned whilst working in these communities inspired me to start a career in Social Care.

I completed my Management and Leadership qualification for Health and Social Care in 2017 and completed 18 months of Development and Leadership training.

What top tips would you give someone when looking for the right care home?
You should always have a gut feeling as to whether a home is right from the moment you walk in. There will be a welcoming atmosphere or something special that tells you deep down, this is the right home for your loved one.
