Located in a beautiful 1922 Cotswold stone manor house, Merryfield House Nursing Home is set in tranquil gardens on the outskirts of Witney market town. Formerly the home of a ‘Witney Blanket’ family, it offers residential and nursing care for up to 24 people.

The main house boasts an impressive entrance hall with a sweeping staircase to public rooms, while a purpose-built ground floor area provides single en-suite bedrooms with French windows. With an inglenook fireplace, the main lounge area is an ideal space for residents to relax and socialise in while enjoying views of the garden.

Rated overall 'Good' by CQC in December 2017 and 'Outstanding' in the Responsive category, Merryfield’s staff are all trained to a high standard, holding NVQ levels two, three or four in Care and Management, as well as customer care and training in hospitality, which gives residents that little bit extra as they and their families receive care at Merryfield.

The home's chef uses fresh local produce to provide a wonderful choice of meals on a daily basis. Residents may choose where they take their meals, be it in the privacy of their own room or together with other residents (and often friends and relatives) in the dining room.

All bedrooms are fully furnished and come equipped with an electric bed, SMART television, call bell. Telephone and Sky TV facility available on request. The home has fibre Wi-Fi available for all residents and a dedicated guest network throughout. iPad tablets, FaceTime, Zoom and Skype access enable regular communication between residents and their relatives. The home cinema provides access to Netflix and Amazon Prime.

The home has exceptional activities coordinators who arrange a varied programme of events and outings with its bespoke minibus, including visits to local stately homes, animal therapy, musical entertainment, yoga, virtual reality headsets, and gardening.

I visit Merryfield most weeks to take a resident to church.
I have always been impressed by the good atmosphere and attention to residents spiritual and social needs.
Although my experience of the personal care provided is more limited, I have never seen any signs of neglect or anything to cause me
concern.

As a family, we have found Merryfield to be absolutely fantastic.
My dad is being incredibly well cared for here and all his needs are being met without any doubt.
He's settled and calm and this is all thanks to the lovely staff.
We are grateful every day that this is where my dad can call home!

My husband has advanced Alzheimer's and has been a resident for two months. I visit him almost every day and I am always impressed by the standard of care all residents receive. Staff are always visible, bells are answered so quickly and carers always address residents by name, with a smile. The house
is clean, fresh-smelling and accessible to visitors but secure for residents. I usually stay an hour, but I always see a senior nurse, (Manager of Deputy) either attending to medicines or, usually, assisting a carer "hands on". It cannot be easy with dementia patients, but I have never heard a cross or reproachful word. My husband appears to be more content than when he was at home and the smiles of the staff bring out a smile from him. What more could I ask for?

Our daughter has used this facility for almost 7 years now.
It is known to locals as the best nursing home in the area.
From the time one enters the main entrance you sense comfort and class about the place - always freshness greets one.
If I needed the services of these facilities this would be
my/our choices.
No faults.
It has kind and courteous staff.
Rating - superb.

My Uncle, who was bed bound and had cancer, stayed at Merryfield with palliative care needs. He had a total dependency for both his medical and personal needs.
At all levels, the staff were caring and attentive. The Staff were very efficient at liaising with the various agencies to get my Uncle the
help he needed. The home has a very good relationship with the local GP practice. I was a regular visitor to the home and I was invariably met with a warm greeting and friendly update on my Uncle. A nurse or manager was always available to answer my questions and the daily records were in his room at all times so I could check on his day. The staff ratio in this home is very good and I believe this is the secret to the excellent service they provide. Even when my Uncle sadly passed away they were amazing. I cannot ever repay the care they took of my Uncle (and me) but I hope this review will help reassure others that, in my view at least, this is an excellent nursing home.

Mum has only been living at Merryfield House for a few months and she's very happy. They have made her feel so welcome and the care is first rate. She enjoys all the meals and the many varied activities especially singing, scrabble and gardening. Her health and morale have improved immensely since she
moved and it is a relief for all of us to know she is so well looked after. The staff all seem to go the extra mile for all the residents and treat everyone with great respect and dignity.

Overall Experience 5.0 out of 5
I spent most Wednesday afternoons from January to May 2017 supporting a gentleman with a learning disability to volunteer at the home. During this time I was so impressed with the kindness, care and patience shown by all staff to everyone – each other, the residents, visitors etc. Nothing was ever
too much trouble for anyone, the home was always spotlessly clean and tidy, as were the residents. Merryfield is such a shining star in the world of care homes and so different to those we read about in the press. I have had very little experience of residential care homes and so wasn’t quite sure what to expect and as a result was pleasantly surprised by everything I witnessed during my time there.

I sincerely hope that none of my family ever have to leave their homes and spend the remainder of their days in residential care, but should this ever be the case I would have no hesitation in suggesting to them that they consider Merryfield as an option based on what I have seen there.

I couldn't be more impressed with Merryfield House. The staff are so caring and helpful and the home is always so friendly, homely and clean. My father has severe dementia but myself and my relatives have all been amazed by the improvement in his condition since coming to Merryfield. He talks a lot
more and communicates better. He looks happy, healthy and content and absolutely loves the food! The staff are all so attentive to him and involve him in all the activities to stimulate him and give him interest. I am so grateful to the home that they have gotten my father to be the best that he can be despite his illness and have enabled us both to enjoy precious time together. I wouldn't want him to be anywhere else and am looking forward to better weather when we can spend some time together in the beautiful garden.

I could not wish for a better home for my father-in-law. The carers, staff, food and surroundings are beyond excellent and my father-in-law is treated with dignity, love and respect and as a person rather than just a number. Despite his advanced Alzheimers, at Merryfield there is a marked improvement
in his condition and they have succeeded in giving him back a quality of life and always go out of their way to involve him in activities and constantly think of ways to help him and assist him. It is such a caring, friendly place that is always welcoming and spotlessly clean with lovely homely touches. I cannot recommend it highly enough. My father-in-law is the healthiest and happiest we have seen him in a very long time. Thank you Merryfield House.

Lovely family feel, Grandad is very happy and well cared for. All the residents know one another and the staff, so the community at Merryfield House Nursing Home is very friendly and loving. I came when activities were taking place and many residents were actively taking part and enjoying the range
of things available for them to take part in together - felt more like a group of friends sharing time together than a nursing home. Really excellent.

I have been at Merryfield for five months. I have a very comfortable room but it is a bit small. The room has a toilet and wash basin but no shower. I get taken to the shower twice a week and showered by a carer. The food is excellent. The staff are very kind and considerate. I can walk from my room
into a small garden. The home looks after our mental and physical health, by providing quizzes and scrabble club etc, and exercises to music.

Current Review Score: 10.0 (9.993)

Overview of Review Score

The Review Score of 10 (9.993) out of 10 for Merryfield House Nursing Home is based on a) the Average Rating and b) the number of positive Reviews.

  1. The Average Rating is 5.0 out of 5 from 25 Reviews in the last 24 months.
  2. The score for the number of positive Reviews is 5.0 out of 5 from 25 positive Reviews in the last 24 months.

Detailed Breakdown of Review Score

The maximum Review Score for a Care Home is 10, which is made up from the Average Rating of Reviews (maximum of 5 points) and the Number of Reviews (maximum of 5 points) in the last 24 months:

  1. 5 Points are available for the Average Rating from all Reviews in the last 24 months. The Average Rating of 4.993 for Merryfield House Nursing Home is calculated as follows: ( (298 Excellents x 5) + (2 Goods x 4) ) ÷ 300 Ratings = 4.993
  2. 5 Points are available for the number of Positive Reviews in the last 24 months. A Positive Review is defined as any Review with an 'Overall Experience' of '4' or '5' (out of a max rating '5'). The 5 Points relating to the number of positive Reviews for Merryfield House Nursing Home is based on 25 positive Reviews in the last 24 months and is calculated as per below:

The 5 points available are broken down as follows:

    1. 4 points are available for the first 20 Positive Reviews in the last 24 months; 3 points for the first Positive Review, 0.125 Points for each of the next four Positive Reviews, 0.05 Points for the next five Positive Reviews, and finally 0.025 Points for the next ten Positive Reviews. (1st = 3.000, 2nd = 0.125, 3rd = 0.125, 4th = 0.125, 5th = 0.125, 6th = 0.050, 7th = 0.050, 8th = 0.050, 9th = 0.050, 10th = 0.050, 11th = 0.025, 12th = 0.025, 13th = 0.025, 14th = 0.025, 15th = 0.025, 16th = 0.025, 17th = 0.025, 18th = 0.025, 19th = 0.025, 20th = 0.025) 3 + 0.125 + 0.125 + 0.125 + 0.125 + 0.05 + 0.05 + 0.05 + 0.05 + 0.05 + 0.025 + 0.025 + 0.025 + 0.025 + 0.025 + 0.025 + 0.025 + 0.025 + 0.025 + 0.025 = 4
    2. 1 point is available for the number of Positive Reviews reaching 20% of the registered maximum number of service users in the last 24 months. If this number is partially reached, then that proportion of 1 point is given. eg a Care Home registered for a maximum of 50 service users has to reach 10 Positive Reviews to receive 1 point, if it has 7 reviews it will receive 0.7 points. 20% of the 24 registered maximum number of service users is 4.8, which has been reached with 25 Positive reviews. Points = 1
  3. When a Review is submitted by someone who has previously submitted a Review, only the latest Review will count towards the Review Score.
  4. If a Care Home does not have a review in the last 24 months, then it will not have a Review Score.
