Overall Experience

Lovely family feel, Grandad is very happy and well cared for. All the residents know one another and the staff, so the community at Merryfield House Nursing Home is very friendly and loving. I came when activities were taking place and many residents were actively taking part and enjoying the range of things available for them to take part in together - felt more like a group of friends sharing time together than a nursing home. Really excellent.

I visit the home on a weekly basis and have always found the management and staff very friendly and helpful. Each resident is given a weekly programme of activities which shows a good mix of interests and entertainment. I feel the residents are well looked after in every respect.

We normally visit every Monday pm we enjoy our visits very much as everyone here is always very helpful and usually happy and smiling. Our uncle is always happy when we see him and also other residents also seem to be happy. Overall the home seems to be run extremely well and I would not hesitate to recommend this home to anyone.

I have been at Merryfield for five months. I have a very comfortable room but it is a bit small. The room has a toilet and wash basin but no shower. I get taken to the shower twice a week and showered by a carer. The food is excellent. The staff are very kind and considerate. I can walk from my room into a small garden. The home looks after our mental and physical health, by providing quizzes and scrabble club etc, and exercises to music.

Excellent care and understanding in all aspects of my father-in-law's care, who has been a resident for over six years and who we would not place anywhere else. Staff are very knowledgeable of all their residents who are all cared for on an individual basis.

From staff up to management, every member of the team at Merryfield House Nursing Home is knowledgeable about every resident and their individual care and needs. Excellent place for my father to end his days, and for us as a family, to be safe in the knowledge that he will always be cared for.

This was the first of many care homes and nursing homes we visited - we liked it very much indeed. Having been the actual home of one of the weaving families of Witney, it has a homely and interesting feel - small cosy rooms and a lovely garden. The staff are friendly and smile in recognition and work happily with each other. We liked the accessibility of the managerial staff.
My husband says the food is good. We had to wait about a year before there was a vacancy. The rooms are clean and comfortable, the lounge areas are small and cosy. The garden is full of flowers and safe for residents.

I am a little concerned about the medical suppliers. Some residents have had too long to wait which reflects badly on the home.

Reply from Fran Torres, Home Manager at Merryfield House Nursing Home

Dear Mrs. Margetts. Thank you for your very kind words and your review rating us as 'excellent' overall. I am happy we had the chance to also discuss the external supplier regarding your concerns around the medical supplies. As always, if there is anything else I can do to assist, please let me know.

I am very happy with the care, accommodation and catering at Merryfield House Nursing Home. It is in pleasant surroundings in which the residents seem very happy. There are always activities and entertainment each week which the residents look forward to. Very caring staff and good catering with home cooked food. I never worry about the quality of my uncle's care.

As a visitor, I do not see all of the home, but the ground floor common rooms (dining/lounges/garden/car park) are always in clean and tidy condition. There are no smells. The staff always seem to be very kind to the residents who are discreetly taken out and returned to my performances - no fuss, it just happens.

I regard my monthly visits very pleasant - probably helps my general well-being, being recently widowed. The residents always want to know when I shall return so that is nice.

From when I began working at Merryfield House, I found both the staff and the residents were very welcoming. The home itself is very well maintained and it is also kept very clean. The thing I enjoy most about volunteering here is being able to interact with the residents who live here.

I have been visiting her for a couple of years, and you are always made welcome and offered a cup of tea. It does not feel like a traditional "care home", more like a large extended family. The building is an old one which is part of it's charm and character, but is light and bright in spite of this. The staff are very caring, and more permanent which helps build good, lasting relationships which everyone benefits from. There are many benefits from not being in a large home, everyone can be an individual and enjoy a wide range of various activities.

This is an excellent nursing home. The residents are well cared for, the staff are kind, patient and friendly. A lot of effort goes into celebrating special events, birthdays, Christmas etc. Residents are treated as individuals and in spite of dementia or frailty, efforts are made to make them feel at home.

Although my father has not been in the home for long (3 weeks) my experience has been very good. All staff are professional and clearly understood. Everyone is friendly and very helpful. The staff are very good at encouraging Dad to attend activities at the home, making him feel more involved, which is reassuring for the family. They have made every effort to help Dad feel settled and secure. It does feel more like a home than a care home to visit, which is pleasant for family.

Thank you so much for sending me the photos of Dad. I thought the Summer party was a great success and although Dad wasn't able to join in fully we both had a very relaxed and happy afternoon together eating delicious food and sipping Pimms. He even managed a little smile for Miss Oxfordshire. Thank you to you and all the staff who care for him and for your efforts in including him in the life of Merryfield.

I would also like to take this opportunity to thank you all for the support and kindness which is shown to me each and every week when I visit Dad. It is very hard seeing my wonderful father gradually decline, now a mere shadow of the man he used to be. Your friendship and concern mean a great deal to me. I feel my father is a real part of the community at Merryfield and whilst he is still with us, I feel a part of that community too.

With very best wishes and thank you again.
