Located in a beautiful 1922 Cotswold stone manor house, Merryfield House Nursing Home is set in tranquil gardens on the outskirts of Witney market town. Formerly the home of a ‘Witney Blanket’ family, it offers residential and nursing care for up to 24 people.

The main house boasts an impressive entrance hall with a sweeping staircase to public rooms, while a purpose-built ground floor area provides single en-suite bedrooms with French windows. With an inglenook fireplace, the main lounge area is an ideal space for residents to relax and socialise in while enjoying views of the garden.

Rated overall 'Good' by CQC in December 2017 and 'Outstanding' in the Responsive category, Merryfield’s staff are all trained to a high standard, holding NVQ levels two, three or four in Care and Management, as well as customer care and training in hospitality, which gives residents that little bit extra as they and their families receive care at Merryfield.

The home's chef uses fresh local produce to provide a wonderful choice of meals on a daily basis. Residents may choose where they take their meals, be it in the privacy of their own room or together with other residents (and often friends and relatives) in the dining room.

All bedrooms are fully furnished and come equipped with an electric bed, SMART television, call bell. Telephone and Sky TV facility available on request. The home has fibre Wi-Fi available for all residents and a dedicated guest network throughout. iPad tablets, FaceTime, Zoom and Skype access enable regular communication between residents and their relatives. The home cinema provides access to Netflix and Amazon Prime.

The home has exceptional activities coordinators who arrange a varied programme of events and outings with its bespoke minibus, including visits to local stately homes, animal therapy, musical entertainment, yoga, virtual reality headsets, and gardening.

Find Merryfield House is a welcoming home with caring staff. Accommodation is comfortable with home-cooked meals. Always some form of activity on entertainment for the residents each week. Nursing care is excellent, is a very clean environment.

As a visitor, I do not see all of the home, but the ground floor common rooms (dining/lounges/garden/car park) are always in clean and tidy condition. There are no smells. The staff always seem to be very kind to the residents who are discreetly taken out and returned to my performances - no fuss, it
just happens.
I regard my monthly visits very pleasant - probably helps my general well-being, being recently widowed. The residents always want to know when I shall return so that is nice.

From when I began working at Merryfield House, I found both the staff and the residents were very welcoming. The home itself is very well maintained and it is also kept very clean. The thing I enjoy most about volunteering here is being able to interact with the residents who live here.

My mother was here for two years, I was made very welcome and became friends with all the staff. I have carried on coming to the home as a volunteer for the past seven years. I have always seen time as a good home with very caring staff.

I have been visiting her for a couple of years, and you are always made welcome and offered a cup of tea. It does not feel like a traditional "care home", more like a large extended family. The building is an old one which is part of it's charm and character, but is light and bright in spite of this.
The staff are very caring, and more permanent which helps build good, lasting relationships which everyone benefits from. There are many benefits from not being in a large home, everyone can be an individual and enjoy a wide range of various activities.

This is an excellent nursing home. The residents are well cared for, the staff are kind, patient and friendly. A lot of effort goes into celebrating special events, birthdays, Christmas etc. Residents are treated as individuals and in spite of dementia or frailty, efforts are made to make them feel
at home.

Although my father has not been in the home for long (3 weeks) my experience has been very good. All staff are professional and clearly understood. Everyone is friendly and very helpful. The staff are very good at encouraging Dad to attend activities at the home, making him feel more involved, which
is reassuring for the family. They have made every effort to help Dad feel settled and secure. It does feel more like a home than a care home to visit, which is pleasant for family.

Thank you so much for sending me the photos of Dad. I thought the Summer party was a great success and although Dad wasn't able to join in fully we both had a very relaxed and happy afternoon together eating delicious food and sipping Pimms. He even managed a little smile for Miss Oxfordshire. Thank
you to you and all the staff who care for him and for your efforts in including him in the life of Merryfield.

I would also like to take this opportunity to thank you all for the support and kindness which is shown to me each and every week when I visit Dad. It is very hard seeing my wonderful father gradually decline, now a mere shadow of the man he used to be. Your friendship and concern mean a great deal to me. I feel my father is a real part of the community at Merryfield and whilst he is still with us, I feel a part of that community too.

With very best wishes and thank you again.

Overview of Review Score

The Review Score of 10 (9.992) out of 10 for Merryfield House Nursing Home is based on a) the Average Rating and b) the number of positive Reviews.

  1. The Average Rating is 5.0 out of 5 from 22 Reviews in the last 24 months.
  2. The score for the number of positive Reviews is 5.0 out of 5 from 22 positive Reviews in the last 24 months.

Detailed Breakdown of Review Score

The maximum Review Score for a Care Home is 10, which is made up from the Average Rating of Reviews (maximum of 5 points) and the Number of Reviews (maximum of 5 points) in the last 24 months:

  1. 5 Points are available for the Average Rating from all Reviews in the last 24 months. The Average Rating of 4.992 for Merryfield House Nursing Home is calculated as follows: ( (262 Excellents x 5) + (2 Goods x 4) ) ÷ 264 Ratings = 4.992
  2. 5 Points are available for the number of Positive Reviews in the last 24 months. A Positive Review is defined as any Review with an 'Overall Experience' of '4' or '5' (out of a max rating '5'). The 5 Points relating to the number of positive Reviews for Merryfield House Nursing Home is based on 22 positive Reviews in the last 24 months and is calculated as per below:

The 5 points available are broken down as follows:

    1. 4 points are available for the first 20 Positive Reviews in the last 24 months; 3 points for the first Positive Review, 0.125 Points for each of the next four Positive Reviews, 0.05 Points for the next five Positive Reviews, and finally 0.025 Points for the next ten Positive Reviews. (1st = 3.000, 2nd = 0.125, 3rd = 0.125, 4th = 0.125, 5th = 0.125, 6th = 0.050, 7th = 0.050, 8th = 0.050, 9th = 0.050, 10th = 0.050, 11th = 0.025, 12th = 0.025, 13th = 0.025, 14th = 0.025, 15th = 0.025, 16th = 0.025, 17th = 0.025, 18th = 0.025, 19th = 0.025, 20th = 0.025) 3 + 0.125 + 0.125 + 0.125 + 0.125 + 0.05 + 0.05 + 0.05 + 0.05 + 0.05 + 0.025 + 0.025 + 0.025 + 0.025 + 0.025 + 0.025 + 0.025 + 0.025 + 0.025 + 0.025 = 4
    2. 1 point is available for the number of Positive Reviews reaching 20% of the registered maximum number of service users in the last 24 months. If this number is partially reached, then that proportion of 1 point is given. eg a Care Home registered for a maximum of 50 service users has to reach 10 Positive Reviews to receive 1 point, if it has 7 reviews it will receive 0.7 points. 20% of the 24 registered maximum number of service users is 4.8, which has been reached with 22 Positive reviews. Points = 1
  3. When a Review is submitted by someone who has previously submitted a Review, only the latest Review will count towards the Review Score.
  4. If a Care Home does not have a review in the last 24 months, then it will not have a Review Score.
