Staff very friendly and caring- father settled in well. More staff could be with residents at meal times. Some residents who become agitated and verbal could be encouraged to engage with others activities so as not to upset quieter, vulnerable residents. Some residents find language and behaviour of
others upsetting- maybe use quieter area for quieter residents as can be upset.
Reply from Tom Holloway, Senior Digital Marketing Executive at Barchester Dudwell St Mary Care HomeThank you for your invaluable comments. We have reviewed the staffing on the first floor during meal times and have seconded more staff to assist the care staff at these busy times. We will continue to monitor the situation. We are sorry that we cannot provide a quieter lounge area on that particular floor but there is a much quieter lounge on the ground floor which is accessible to all and which all residents and relatives are welcome to use as required.

I have found Dudwell St Mary to be a warm and friendly home with excellent caring staff and a very pleasant environment. It is clean and very well presented. My mum is happy there in her ground floor room where she's allowed numerous bird feeders outside her window! I am kept informed about her
welfare and we are allowed to come and go freely and always offered tea and very often a meal. I am very happy that mum is living there.

My mother has been resident at Dudwell St Mary since September 2007. The home handled her transition with all the anxieties, gently and carefully. We have had consistently good care. As her strength has diminished the care needs have changed. She has been consistently and gently cared for. Now she is
asleep almost all the time. Care standard have been very high. The home has responded quickly to any and all of our concerns as soon as they are raised.

Overview of Review Score

The Review Score of 9.8 (9.778) out of 10 for Barchester Dudwell St Mary Care Home is based on a) the Average Rating and b) the number of positive Reviews.

  1. The Average Rating is 4.8 out of 5 from 20 Reviews in the last 24 months.
  2. The score for the number of positive Reviews is 5.0 out of 5 from 20 positive Reviews in the last 24 months.

Detailed Breakdown of Review Score

The maximum Review Score for a Care Home is 10, which is made up from the Average Rating of Reviews (maximum of 5 points) and the Number of Reviews (maximum of 5 points) in the last 24 months:

  1. 5 Points are available for the Average Rating from all Reviews in the last 24 months. The Average Rating of 4.778 for Barchester Dudwell St Mary Care Home is calculated as follows: ( (187 Excellents x 5) + (35 Goods x 4) + (8 Satisfactorys x 3) ) ÷ 230 Ratings = 4.778
  2. 5 Points are available for the number of Positive Reviews in the last 24 months. A Positive Review is defined as any Review with an 'Overall Experience' of '4' or '5' (out of a max rating '5'). The 5 Points relating to the number of positive Reviews for Barchester Dudwell St Mary Care Home is based on 20 positive Reviews in the last 24 months and is calculated as per below:

The 5 points available are broken down as follows:

    1. 4 points are available for the first 20 Positive Reviews in the last 24 months; 3 points for the first Positive Review, 0.125 Points for each of the next four Positive Reviews, 0.05 Points for the next five Positive Reviews, and finally 0.025 Points for the next ten Positive Reviews. (1st = 3.000, 2nd = 0.125, 3rd = 0.125, 4th = 0.125, 5th = 0.125, 6th = 0.050, 7th = 0.050, 8th = 0.050, 9th = 0.050, 10th = 0.050, 11th = 0.025, 12th = 0.025, 13th = 0.025, 14th = 0.025, 15th = 0.025, 16th = 0.025, 17th = 0.025, 18th = 0.025, 19th = 0.025, 20th = 0.025) 3 + 0.125 + 0.125 + 0.125 + 0.125 + 0.05 + 0.05 + 0.05 + 0.05 + 0.05 + 0.025 + 0.025 + 0.025 + 0.025 + 0.025 + 0.025 + 0.025 + 0.025 + 0.025 + 0.025 = 4
    2. 1 point is available for the number of Positive Reviews reaching 20% of the registered maximum number of service users in the last 24 months. If this number is partially reached, then that proportion of 1 point is given. eg a Care Home registered for a maximum of 50 service users has to reach 10 Positive Reviews to receive 1 point, if it has 7 reviews it will receive 0.7 points. 20% of the 65 registered maximum number of service users is 13, which has been reached with 20 Positive reviews. Points = 1
  3. When a Review is submitted by someone who has previously submitted a Review, only the latest Review will count towards the Review Score.
  4. If a Care Home does not have a review in the last 24 months, then it will not have a Review Score.

Job Title: General Manager Joined: 2026

Hi. My name is Anthony Butler, and I am the General Manager at Dudwell St Mary.

I have been working for Barchester Healthcare since 2011. I started my journey as a Carer at Dudwell St Mary's all those years ago. I progressed to become a South Operational Trainer for the Company, and in the following years, I completed my Level 5 management training.

In 2024, I was promoted as the new General Manager at our sister home, Lydfords, and now it is wonderful to do a full circle, and I am back here within the Dudwell family as the now current GM.

I am dedicated to supporting our staff to deliver excellent person-centred care to all our residents and families.

Job Title: Clinical Deputy Manager Joined: 2026

When people ask me what I do, I often smile before answering.

Yes, my job title is Clinical Deputy General Manager, but what I really do is help people — residents, families, and colleagues — navigate some of the most important moments in their lives.

I started my career as a nurse at the National Health Service for 15 years, driven by a passion for patient care and a belief that healthcare should be as much about kindness as it is about clinical excellence. Over the years, my desire to work with elderly people I realised that leadership roles gave me the chance to influence not just one resident’s journey, but the systems and teams that care for hundreds every day.

Becoming a Clinical Deputy General Manager was a natural step — it allowed me to combine my clinical expertise with strategic leadership, ensuring that our services are safe, effective, and truly patient-centred.

The role can be demanding, balancing operational pressures with the need to maintain high-quality, compassionate care is not easy, but the rewards are immense, seeing the resident journey, being supportive, watching a team member grow in confidence, or implementing a change that improves safety for everyone.

Healthcare is evolving rapidly, and so is the role of a Clinical Deputy General Manager. From digital transformation to new models of care, there’s never been a more exciting — or important — time to lead.

For me, it’s not just a job. It’s a privilege to be part of a team at Barchester that makes a real difference every single day and also providing a premium caring experience, which is delivered by our team to those we care for.
