My father was only in the nursing home for five days for end of life care, but I cannot praise them enough for the kindness and care they extended to him. In exceptional circumstances, during the Coronaviris pandemic when visiting was restricted, they also treated my mother, brother and I with understanding.

My experience with Freshford Cottage was always welcoming by staff, some staff were better than others. I have rated cleanliness as poor due to the concerns we raised about blood on a chair which was not cleaned the whole time my uncle was living at Freshford Cottage. I would recommend this home due
to the care my uncle received, which was good.

Very welcoming from the first day, room was nice, carers were nice, food was good. I would say my uncle was treated with dignity. My only ever concern was that blood was never cleaned off an armchair, even after mentioning a couple of times. I would definitely recommend Freshford Cottage, it is one
of the nicest homes I have been into.

Freshford Cottage is a lovely nursing home. The staff are fantastic and have worked together to help settle my dad into his new home. The staff are caring and very approachable and nothing is too much trouble. I would certainly not hesitate to recommend the home in fact I have.

The manager and staff are amazing. They are kind, helpful and totally appropriate in their actions and words. They took care of my father with immense understanding and kindness. In addition, the care and understanding shown towards my mother at a very difficult time was second to none. I have been
to lots of care homes over the last two years and this one is exceptional.

I have been a parish visitor at Freshford for over two years and I have always been greeted by friendly staff, staff who are very caring and competent in their job and a lot of laughing and joking. All in all a very happy home.

There is a warmth and friendliness as soon as you walk into Freshford Cottage.
Everyone greets you with a smile and does their best to make you welcome. Daily notes on residents care are there to be seen by a visitor to the room and my query is always dealt with quickly.

A family friend recommended Freshford Cottage to us when we urgently needed palliative care for our mother. After our initial visit, we were immediately drawn to the homely atmosphere and to the friendly and efficient staff. We are being kept fully informed of our mother's condition but more importantly,
she is very happy there.

My mother has been a resident since March 2017 after having to leave a rest home as her condition had worsened as she is unable to do anything for herself now. The staff overall are very friendly, compassionate and caring and her needs are completely attended to. A file of her day to day needs and food
intake is readily available in her room for anyone to see. The location of the home is very central which allows relatives and friends easy access by rail or bus and there is ample parking. Overall I would award this home 5* for the care that is given to residents and the empathy the staff have for the relatives.

Current Review Score: 9.8 (9.798)

Overview of Review Score

The Review Score of 9.8 (9.798) out of 10 for Freshford Cottage is based on a) the Average Rating and b) the number of positive Reviews.

  1. The Average Rating is 4.9 out of 5 from 15 Reviews in the last 24 months.
  2. The score for the number of positive Reviews is 4.9 out of 5 from 15 positive Reviews in the last 24 months.

Detailed Breakdown of Review Score

The maximum Review Score for a Care Home is 10, which is made up from the Average Rating of Reviews (maximum of 5 points) and the Number of Reviews (maximum of 5 points) in the last 24 months:

  1. 5 Points are available for the Average Rating from all Reviews in the last 24 months. The Average Rating of 4.923 for Freshford Cottage is calculated as follows: ( (158 Excellents x 5) + (9 Goods x 4) + (2 Satisfactorys x 3) ) ÷ 169 Ratings = 4.923
  2. 5 Points are available for the number of Positive Reviews in the last 24 months. A Positive Review is defined as any Review with an 'Overall Experience' of '4' or '5' (out of a max rating '5'). The 4.875 Points relating to the number of positive Reviews for Freshford Cottage is based on 15 positive Reviews in the last 24 months and is calculated as per below:

The 5 points available are broken down as follows:

    1. 4 points are available for the first 20 Positive Reviews in the last 24 months; 3 points for the first Positive Review, 0.125 Points for each of the next four Positive Reviews, 0.05 Points for the next five Positive Reviews, and finally 0.025 Points for the next ten Positive Reviews. (1st = 3.000, 2nd = 0.125, 3rd = 0.125, 4th = 0.125, 5th = 0.125, 6th = 0.050, 7th = 0.050, 8th = 0.050, 9th = 0.050, 10th = 0.050, 11th = 0.025, 12th = 0.025, 13th = 0.025, 14th = 0.025, 15th = 0.025, 16th = 0.025, 17th = 0.025, 18th = 0.025, 19th = 0.025, 20th = 0.025) 3 + 0.125 + 0.125 + 0.125 + 0.125 + 0.05 + 0.05 + 0.05 + 0.05 + 0.05 + 0.025 + 0.025 + 0.025 + 0.025 + 0.025 = 3.875
    2. 1 point is available for the number of Positive Reviews reaching 20% of the registered maximum number of service users in the last 24 months. If this number is partially reached, then that proportion of 1 point is given. eg a Care Home registered for a maximum of 50 service users has to reach 10 Positive Reviews to receive 1 point, if it has 7 reviews it will receive 0.7 points. 20% of the 20 registered maximum number of service users is 4, which has been reached with 15 Positive reviews. Points = 1
  3. When a Review is submitted by someone who has previously submitted a Review, only the latest Review will count towards the Review Score.
  4. If a Care Home does not have a review in the last 24 months, then it will not have a Review Score.
