Caer Gwent, Worthing, West Sussex

Caer Gwent in Downview Road, Worthing, received a 'good' rating following a recent inspection (April 2017) by the Care Quality Commission. The home is one of Guild Care’s three care homes with nursing and is located away from the road in quiet landscaped gardens used by residents.

The remodelled manor house in West Sussex has undergone a major transformation and has revolutionised the notion of retirement living; offering five star service and luxury for those who appreciate the finer things in life.

Many of the rooms open out around the beautiful gardens and are light and spacious with en-suite bathrooms and sumptuous soft furnishings. The dining rooms and lounges are sunny and cheerful and first class care is available to residents who require additional help.

Catering is exceptional with a choice of fresh food prepared daily and a home-cooked, nutritionally balanced menu developed in consultation with residents. Special diets and a menu for frail residents have been a great success.

Residents at the home enjoy a wide range of social activities including personalised shopping trips, outings and visits. Families drop in at any time and can also stay for lunch and dinner.

There are a wide range of daily activities for those more active but everyone is included in events at the home including fun days and garden parties if they want to be. Caer Gwent residents have their own hairdresser and benefit from complimentary physiotherapy and aromatherapy sessions.

Reviews

9.4 Caer Gwent has a Review Score of 9.4 (9.365)

The Review Score of 9.4 (maximum of 10) for Caer Gwent is based on a) the Average Rating and b) the number of positive Reviews.

  • a) The Average Rating is 4.6 out of 5 from 11 Reviews over all time. This Average Rating is also the rating value for Caer Gwent in Google's Search Results - more info

  • b) The score for the number of positive Reviews is 4.7 out of 5 from 9 positive Reviews in the last 12 months.

  • a) 5 Points are available for the Average Rating of all Reviews over all time. For each review the Care Home / service is rated Excellent, Good, Satisfactory, Poor or Very Poor on a number of areas eg Staff, Management etc. The Care Home receives points for each rating as follows: Excellent = 5. Good = 4. Satisfactory = 3. Poor = 2. Very Poor = 1. These points are added up and then divided by the total number of completed ratings to generate the average rating.

    The Average Rating of 4.627 for Caer Gwent is calculated as follows: ( (85 Excellents x 5) + (35 Goods x 4) + (6 Satisfactorys x 3) ) ÷ 126 Ratings = 4.627

  • b) 5 Points are available for the number of Positive Reviews in the last 12 months. If there are no Positive Reviews in the last 12 months, then 2.5 points are available for the number of Positive Reviews in the last 2 years. A Positive Review is defined as any Review with 'Extremely Likely' or 'Likely' in answer to the question 'How likely are you to recommend this Care Home to friends and family if they needed similar care or treatment?'

The 5 points available are broken down as follows:

    1. 4 points are available for the first 5 Positive Reviews, 3 points for the first Positive Review and then 0.25 Points for each of the next 4 Positive Reviews.

    2. 1 point is available for reaching a target number of Positive Reviews based on 20% of the number of registered maximum number of service users. If the target is partially reached then that proportion of 1 point is given. eg a Care Home with 50 registered maximum number of service users has a target of 10 Positive Reviews, if it has 10 or more Positive Reviews it will receive 1 point, if it has 7 reviews will receive 0.7 points.

    3. If there are no Positive Reviews in the last 12 months, then 2.5 points are available for the number of Positive Reviews in the last 2 years. The calculation is the same as above, except the points are divided by 2.

The 4.738 Points relating to the number of positive Reviews for Caer Gwent is based on 9 positive Reviews in the last 12 months and is calculated as follows:

    1. 3 + 0.25 + 0.25 + 0.25 + 0.25 = 4

    2. Target of 12.2 positive Reviews (61 registered maximum number of service users ÷ 5). 9 Reviews ÷ 12.2 Target = 0.738

  • When a Review is submitted by someone who has previously submitted a Review, only the latest Review will count towards the Review Score.

Beautiful interior looks like a 4 or 5* hotel, staff have always been helpful and responsive, the activities are fun and engaging. I'd love to live there and I'm only 40! I think sometimes some communication gets 'lost in translation' on account of my grandmother being hard of hearing e.g. what is said doesn't always get heard/understood by her and when she responds to something she thought she heard it doesn't necessarily correlate accurately to what was actually being said/asked.

The ability for the family to demonstrate the growing needs of my father, to be eligible for consideration of continuing care allowances, has been limited by the type of record keeping. Tick box reporting, whilst more efficient and quicker for staff to complete, severely hamper evidential support to claims.

Samantha Philpott, Head of Communications and Marketing at Caer Gwent responded to this review on 11 Dec 2017:

The work of our staff is focused on spending quality time with the individuals in our care, making sure they feel supported, happy and comfortable. We use a range of assessment tools and care planning documents to evidence the care we provide but on a day to day basis spending time with people is more important to us than spending large periods of time documenting the work we’ve undertaken. The care planning software we have in place is nationally recognised and meets our regulatory responsibilities. We believe through the software we use that we achieve the right balance.

Beautifully maintained care home offering a wide choice of activities.
The rooms are well furnished as are the communal spaces.
The staff group are friendly to residents and visitors alike and respond to any requests. The manager is supportive and very approachable.
Care standards are very good and the menus are comprehensive with plenty of choices.

Staff pleasant and courteous. Any queries followed up straight away with every attempt to resolve. Kept informed of any health issues. Took a while for mum to settle but staff have been supportive, patient and understanding. Something going on everyday morning and afternoon. Food to a very high standard. Mum makes use of hairdressers every week and some of the activities. Option to put name down for bus trip.

I find all the staff compassionate and caring in the care of my mother. Although none of the family wished my mother to be in a care home it became necessary and I have peace of mind knowing she is safe and well looked after.

My Mum has been in Caer Gwent for almost two years. She has received excellent care and despite being very frail has good supportive relationships with all the staff. If any medical issues arise I am immediately contacted by the duty nurse and I have excellent communication with the senior managers and reception staff. The refurbishment of Caer Gwent has made it a delightful environment to visit.

Generally, good standard of care sometimes slow response when ringing for assistance. Clean towels not always supplied until requested meal portions too large despite repeated requests for a small helping. This is very off-putting for someone with a small appetite!

Samantha Philpott, Head of Communications and Marketing at Caer Gwent responded to this review on 30 Oct 2017:

Thank you for your review. Your comments are valued and we will ensure action is taken with regards the issues you have raised.

My wife and I have been married and together for 64 years. Having suffered a hip fracture, and an operation, I was sent from hospital to Caer Gwent for a months respite. My wife, who is suffering from Alzheimer's, had been taken here after my fall. It was a happy reunion for us.
Staff, nurses, carers and all the other helpers made it possible for us to be together for several hours a day. Such kindness and care contributed mainly to my recovery.
I am home again now and visit my wife every day. Thank you everyone.

My Mum had a serious stroke in November 2013 leaving her needing full-time nursing care. Following a spell in hospital, Mum was admitted to Caer Gwent in February 2014 with the excellent support of the Guild Care customer services team that worked very closely with the discharge team at the hospital to manage the move in a timely way and minimised Mum's anxiety.
Since moving to her new home Mum has settled in well and enjoys her home-cooked meals in the delightful dining room and enjoys the daily entertainment especially when they have singers and musicians entertaining.
Mum also likes the animals that come to visit especially the donkey recently and the regular appearance on the magician's rabbit.
My sister and I visit on a weekly basis and always receive a warm welcome at the home at whatever time we pop in.
We're delighted with overall care Mum receives and would not hesitate in recommending the home to anyone looking for residential or nursing care in Worthing.
