Dad has been a resident since November 2019 having had a stroke. He has always been treated with great care and compassion. The staff have always seemed genuinely fond of him. He spent his last days on palliative treatment, and everyone couldn't have been kinder to him. We are so grateful to them all.
Reply from Kevin Burke, Registered Care Home Manager at Caer GwentHi Sharon, thank you for sharing your thoughts. We are so glad that Caer Gwent was a caring and kind place for your dad. We will pass on your words to our staff.

Although writing this in June 2021, the comments relate to the duration of the pandemic.
The care that has been provided for my mother has been exemplary. This is in no small part due to the combined efforts of the care staff, the nursing staff, the health and well-being team, and the manager. The
fact that the home remained Covid-free, and during the time that visits weren't possible, no effort was too much to enable video call 'meetings' which, then as well as now, have proved to be a more than adequate substitute. Since visits have resumed, the willingness to undertake the necessary testing procedures has meant an otherwise difficult experience has been the best possible in the circumstances.
I can't pretend to imagine how difficult the front line experience must have been day-to-day for all the staff. None of this showed during the numerous telephone conversations with nursing and care staff, or during the frequent email exchanges with the health and well-being team.

My 90-year-old mum is so happy living there, she is so well looked after, she has a great relationship with the staff who take so good care of her. My family and l have peace of mind that she is happy and secure. The staff can't do enough for our family as they always keep us updated. We are truly blessed.

I was so pleased with the care my mum got at Caer Gwent. My mum was always saying how friendly, cheerful and kind they were and when she was on end of life care they were very sensitive and welcoming when we visited.

Highly professional and supportive care provided at a very stressful time (lockdown!). Every effort was made by staff to enable communication (virtual) as often as we wanted which has been hugely comforting.
Kind, respectful and caring at all times with prompt clinical input when required.
Clean and
tasteful surroundings and food reported to be mostly excellent.
Reply from Kevin Burke, Manager at Caer GwentMany thanks for such positive feedback, which is very much appreciated on behalf of the team. We are very glad that you are pleased with the support and that it had a positive impact.

My father received end of life care at Caer Gwent for the last 7 weeks of his life. He was looked after by all the staff from the nurses, carers and hospitality staff with the utmost dignity, care and respect. The staff were also supportive to me and my brother during a very difficult time for us. A
big thank you to the team for making dad's last few weeks as best as they could be.

In the 3 1/2 years, my husband was living in Caer Gwent he was cherished and cared for with love and dignity. I could always feel the "care and love", the staff gave him all the time he was "aware" he was content and happy. I cannot express my heartful thanks and my family's for caring for him as well
as I would have done.

Although my mother has only been at Caer Gwent for a short while, I cannot speak highly enough of the care, kindness and consideration the staff have shown not only to my mum but also myself. The well-being team have made this transition a lot easier, especially during this trying time of lockdown.
Thank you!

As a family we are very happy with the are given to our mother. All the staff have a very caring, cheerful and compassionate attitude. It's also impressive that there is so little staff turnover. It's lovely to see the same friendly faces.

Caer Gwent is, on the whole, a first-rate care home which I think would be difficult to beat in terms of care for the residents, but being informed more would help. Surroundings, staff and general environment are lovely and the staff amazing. As a POA to a resident, although not related, I do feel sometimes
it's hard to 'find out' about the resident in question and with the onset of Dementia the resident can't be relied upon for information.

We have nothing but praise for the care Mum is currently receiving at Caer Gwent. The staff go to great lengths to make the residents feel at home. Communication is excellent, and any questions or requests we have made regarding Mum's care have been quickly attended to. All the staff seem to enjoy working
together and there is a lovely family atmosphere. We are very happy that we have found somewhere so special to care for Mum.

I stayed for one month's respite care. All the care staff were excellent. The food, however, was extremely poor.
Reply from Helen Tidball, Customer Liaison Officer at Caer GwentThank you for your review of Caer Gwent. I’m sorry that during your respite stay you were not happy with the quality of the food. Having spoken to you and your husband, as a direct result of this, Caer Gwent is developing a Catering Service Improvement plan and we will incorporate your feedback into that. We're glad that you were very pleased with the overall care that you did receive and you would look to come back to Caer Gwent in the future.

Beautiful interior looks like a 4 or 5* hotel, staff have always been helpful and responsive, the activities are fun and engaging. I'd love to live there and I'm only 40! I think sometimes some communication gets 'lost in translation' on account of my grandmother being hard of hearing e.g. what is
said doesn't always get heard/understood by her and when she responds to something she thought she heard it doesn't necessarily correlate accurately to what was actually being said/asked.

The ability for the family to demonstrate the growing needs of my father, to be eligible for consideration of continuing care allowances, has been limited by the type of record keeping. Tick box reporting, whilst more efficient and quicker for staff to complete, severely hamper evidential support to
claims.
Reply from Samantha Philpott, Head of Communications and Marketing at Caer GwentThe work of our staff is focused on spending quality time with the individuals in our care, making sure they feel supported, happy and comfortable. We use a range of assessment tools and care planning documents to evidence the care we provide but on a day to day basis spending time with people is more important to us than spending large periods of time documenting the work we’ve undertaken. The care planning software we have in place is nationally recognised and meets our regulatory responsibilities. We believe through the software we use that we achieve the right balance.

Current Review Score: 9.9 (9.875)

Overview of Review Score

The Review Score of 9.9 (9.875) out of 10 for Caer Gwent is based on a) the Average Rating and b) the number of positive Reviews.

  1. The Average Rating is 5.0 out of 5 from 17 Reviews in the last 24 months.
  2. The score for the number of positive Reviews is 4.9 out of 5 from 17 positive Reviews in the last 24 months.

Detailed Breakdown of Review Score

The maximum Review Score for a Care Home is 10, which is made up from the Average Rating of Reviews (maximum of 5 points) and the Number of Reviews (maximum of 5 points) in the last 24 months:

  1. 5 Points are available for the Average Rating from all Reviews in the last 24 months. The Average Rating of 4.950 for Caer Gwent is calculated as follows: ( (194 Excellents x 5) + (6 Goods x 4) + (2 Satisfactorys x 3) ) ÷ 202 Ratings = 4.95
  2. 5 Points are available for the number of Positive Reviews in the last 24 months. A Positive Review is defined as any Review with an 'Overall Experience' of '4' or '5' (out of a max rating '5'). The 4.925 Points relating to the number of positive Reviews for Caer Gwent is based on 17 positive Reviews in the last 24 months and is calculated as per below:

The 5 points available are broken down as follows:

    1. 4 points are available for the first 20 Positive Reviews in the last 24 months; 3 points for the first Positive Review, 0.125 Points for each of the next four Positive Reviews, 0.05 Points for the next five Positive Reviews, and finally 0.025 Points for the next ten Positive Reviews. (1st = 3.000, 2nd = 0.125, 3rd = 0.125, 4th = 0.125, 5th = 0.125, 6th = 0.050, 7th = 0.050, 8th = 0.050, 9th = 0.050, 10th = 0.050, 11th = 0.025, 12th = 0.025, 13th = 0.025, 14th = 0.025, 15th = 0.025, 16th = 0.025, 17th = 0.025, 18th = 0.025, 19th = 0.025, 20th = 0.025) 3 + 0.125 + 0.125 + 0.125 + 0.125 + 0.05 + 0.05 + 0.05 + 0.05 + 0.05 + 0.025 + 0.025 + 0.025 + 0.025 + 0.025 + 0.025 + 0.025 = 3.925
    2. 1 point is available for the number of Positive Reviews reaching 20% of the registered maximum number of service users in the last 24 months. If this number is partially reached, then that proportion of 1 point is given. eg a Care Home registered for a maximum of 50 service users has to reach 10 Positive Reviews to receive 1 point, if it has 7 reviews it will receive 0.7 points. 20% of the 61 registered maximum number of service users is 12.2, which has been reached with 17 Positive reviews. Points = 1
  3. When a Review is submitted by someone who has previously submitted a Review, only the latest Review will count towards the Review Score.
  4. If a Care Home does not have a review in the last 24 months, then it will not have a Review Score.
