Mum has been a resident at Hillside Lodge for a few years. The staff have formed a welcoming, friendly atmosphere for residents and their families. As a family we are so grateful for how well mum is being cared for, she is treated with dignity and respect at all times. The team leaders ensure we are kept informed of every aspect of mums care and wellbeing.
The residents rooms and communal spaces are bright, clean and well maintained.
The kitchen provides a varied menu, there are always options available so residents can choose what they prefer.
There are lots of activities on offer, and many have included family participation - which we thoroughly enjoyed.

Knowing mum is happy, safe and well cared for brings comfort to the family.

The care home is wonderful. The staff are very caring and kind, and I feel reassured that my grandpa is being looked after well. He is always presented well. The facilities are very clean and well kept. Nothing is too much trouble for the staff, and they are very understanding.

I like how they offer a range of regular activities for residents and families, too. I especially appreciate that they allow us to ring our bring our dogs as this does my granpa good and makes him happy.

My mother had been at Hillside Lodge for almost five years and sadly passed away. The care she received before she passed and all the time she was a resident was excellent. She was looked after as if she were a family member. When I went to visit my mother, she was always dressed smart, and loved her jewellery. I was always made welcome and offered a drink. So if you are considering Hillsaide, I highly recommend a visit, it's clean, friendly, and it's not long before everyone knows your name and makes you so welcome. Mum enjoyed her stay, including all the activities, having her hair done and the company of other residents.

Reply from Daniel Rees, Home Manager at Hillside Lodge

Thank you so much for your heartfelt words. We're truly sorry for your loss and honoured to have cared for your mother during her time at Hillside Lodge. It means a great deal to know she felt at home, enjoyed the activities, and was treated with the dignity and warmth she deserved. Your kind recommendation is deeply appreciated by all of us.

Moving mum in to Hillside Lodge two years ago was an emotional journey, but the care, support and dedication the staff has given mum (and us!) has brought us great comfort knowing that she is getting the best possible care.
The staff treat mum as an individual, with dignity and respect. The team leaders ensure we are kept fully appraised of all aspects of mums care, and go above and beyond to ensure those needs are meet.
Mum loves her room, which is helped by being able to have some of her personal effects around the room.

Just being able to do the simple things with mum - making a cup of coffee, watching TV together, or sitting in the garden, - gives Hillside a lovely 'homely' feel. We have been made to feel so welcomed it has almost become our 'second home'!

Between January 20th 2023 and January 1st 2025 my beloved oldest sister lived at Hillside Lodge. She was on the sun-lit top floor (yes - the whole roof is skylights - a brilliant design!) which provides specialized, compassionate dementia care. She was initially disoriented but staff were so patient and kind. I live in the USA so particularly appreciated knowing I could call or email and get responses quickly.
As a former professional cook she loved the meals! This is a huge compliment to Hillside since, as her other senses (hearing and eyesight) dwindled, my sister retained a great deal of joy in a good hot meal.
Even though she had a diagnosis of Alzheimer's (among other issues) her quality of life actually improved once she was under the Hillside care team. She began to enjoy her regular hair appointments and her near constant vertigo and anxiety gradually melted away.

There is no place we would rather have had for my sister's last chapter. Thank you Hillside!

Having witnessed the standards of another care home (beyond awful) and moved my next-of-kin to Hillside I cannot express how grateful I am and how wonderful I think the home is. They have a team of dedicated, professional, kind and caring staff. They keep on top of everything, whether it is the laundry, cleaning or maintenance. The food is also excellent. The home is spacious, airy, bright and has a real "feel-good" atmosphere. The bedrooms are lovely with large, modern adjoining bathrooms. I feel the residents are treated very well and given as much freedom as possible. They are given choices as opposed to being told what to do. I do not feel my next-of-kin could be in a better place and I am very, very happy he is at Hillside.

I cannot speak highly enough of Hillside Lodge.
My mother has had to go into care, and it's not something she was happy about at all.
The staff in Hillside Lodge have been superb in managing this situation- they are very skilled and professional.
The care home is spotless and it has a lovely garden.

None of us know if we will have to go into care as we get older - if I had to I would choose Hillside Lodge.

My mother was a resident at Hillside Lodge in Pulborough for just over 7 months until she passed away. During that time myself and my brother visited many times so built up a very positive relationship with the team there. They were, without fail, cheerful, welcoming and keen to update us on our mothers' health and well-being. Although mostly bed-bound my mother was very happy and comfortable at Hillside. They got to know her likes and dislikes and towards the end of her life went above and beyond to make sure she was comfortable and pain-free. She passed away very peacefully which is all you can hope for.

Mum lives at Hillside Lodge Care Home and visiting her recently I found her to be relaxed and happy sitting in the dayroom.
The staff are always welcoming, friendly and do provide a good level of care. Empathy is often shown whilst giving attention to detail by Staff, towards residents and relatives.
I do not live locally and so when I do visit, the staff provide Mum and I the opportunity to have time alone which I feel provides quality time for Mum and I.
Mum does enjoy having her hair done by the regular hairdresser at Hillside.
Mum has said the food is very good too at Hillside. Mum is not so keen on taking part in activities but I am aware that there are activities available for the residents.

I feel that I am supported by the staff at Hillside Lodge. They are always available to talk to if I need to discuss any matters. I feel reassured and relaxed about Mum's care/environment when leaving Hillside.

Hannah Peppard
Hannah PeppardJob Title:Deputy ManagerJoined: 2011

I joined Hillside Lodge and Shaw healthcare 9 years ago as a young 18 year old. I can honestly say, I have enjoyed every day.

I began as a support worker and felt I quickly bonded with the team. I then went on to take on an administrator role along side my support worker role. When a post of Team leader became available I jumped at the chance and loved the responsibility of the role.

I progressed again in December 2019 to take on my new and current role of Deputy Managers.

I love my current role as I am able to combine so many factors of my previous roles working closely with the residents, staff, residents loved ones, our head office and outside care practitioners. I enjoy working with people and get great satisfaction by providing the residents at Hillside with high quality care. Carmen and I work very closely together in the same office. Throughout this pandemic I have spent more time with Carmen and the team than my own family. We have regular meetings with the senior nurse and also work very closely with her to ensure the wellbeing of the residents.

From all my wonderful memories, I would say the special memory of mine was when I was a support worker on the dementia unit a lady had her 105th Birthday, all the team made this day so special for her and I will never forget the joy on that ladies face.

Qualifications include:
Health and social care level 3 diploma
Health and social care level 3 apprenticeship – Distinction
Health and social care level 2 diploma

Award in awareness of Dementia level 2

Anna LakerJob Title:Service AdministratorJoined: 2014
I joined Shaw healthcare 6 years ago here at Hillside Lodge in a Bank Support worker role.

I fitted into the team really well and was made to feel welcome from the first day. I have progressed my roles to Senior Support worker and bank Team Leader alongside my fulltime role of Service administrator.

Hillside Lodge feels like a big extended family, I love supporting the home, staff and residents. Being one of the first people to speak with callers I really enjoy assisting with queries and being able to solve them! My work on the floor defiantly helps me to understand better.

Every day is different and always lots of laughter, keeping the residents safe and happy is always our aim.

One of my best memories of the home was celebrating our 10 year anniversary when we had a big party with residents, families staff and people from the community. I also really enjoyed attending the National Shaw Star awards in 2016 in Oxford.

Qualifications: NVQ level 2 office administration

Customer service in the business sector.

I have also completed distance learning courses with the North East Surrey College: in Common Health Conditions, Principles of dementia care, preparing to work in adult social care, Principles of end life care, all 4 of which I have obtained certificates in.

I have worked at Hillside Lodge for 9 years.

I started at Hillside Lodge full time as a catering and domestic assistant. Right from the first day, I felt like I was part of the team.

I have also worked in the laundry full time. I love seeing the residents everyday and having a chat.

About 4 years ago I started as working as a full time Activity champion more recently I have reduced this to part time. I was given the opportunity to work part time as a service administrator. I am really enjoying this and chatting with families and health professionals.

I love both of my current roles, they are both very different and I love the mix. I love seeing the residents smiling, happy and supporting them with their daily activities and social interactions which are so important in a person’s wellbeing.

I have had many special moments working here at Hillside Lodge but the most special memory would be meeting some amazing characters through their journey here at Hillside Lodge.
