Hillside is a lovely home, and the commitment of the management and staff is to be applauded. The professionalism and how hard they all work is a credit to Shaw Healthcare, especially after the appalling time they all have all been through. I am thankful that my friend, who has been at Hillside for 5 years, is being cared and looked after by such a fantastic team.

Hillside Lodge is highly recommended by myself, friends and family members. We have witnessed a high level of care and professionalism at all times.

The genuine care that the staff have for the residents is remarkable, and it is this that makes this home so incredible.

My father has only recently moved to the care home following health problems when he had to be admitted to the hospital, on several occasions. He was sent to other respite care homes before being admitted to Hillside Lodge, where he has been offered a long term stay. He appears to have settled in well. The staff are helpful and friendly. My father is currently having a financial assessment carried out, so we do not know what may be required to contribute towards his care, at the home. I am not really in a position to make comments on the following, as we have not been permitted to enter the care home due to COVID -19, so do not have any idea as to what some of the following are like.

My mum was in the care home for three weeks of respite care following a stroke. She also suffers from dementia. It was a really, really tough choice as she has always said how much she always hated the idea of going into a care home. I knew I couldn’t cope with looking after her at home. After a very difficult couple of nights, she did begin to settle. Although it was made harder because I couldn’t visit her and she couldn’t leave too, due to COVID. The ladies that looked after mum was just lovely. Always there to talk things through when I felt so desperate about Mum being in the home. They were all very caring and reassuring.

Thank you for taking such good care of my mum and going the extra mile for her.

My relative has been at Hillside for 3 years, up until the Covid outbreak I was seeing her on a regular basis. It's lovely to get the odd video call from her knowing that she is very happy, it's great to know that she has an extended family in the carer's whilst I can't be with her, this makes me very much at ease knowing that they all take excellent care of her. I love the Activities Bingo which I have accompanied her on a few times, also having different groups in sing along's, etc. making things craft-wise. Visiting hairdresser is lovely too.

Having updates on her is also a great help and puts my mind at rest. Thank you to all at Hillside, especially at this most difficult time.

My mother has been a resident here for the last 21 months, 17 months on the Dementia floor and I cannot fault the care and attention given to her. All the staff know all the residents, and the staff are like a great big extended family. I am completely confident that they will always look after Mum completely and always keep us informed when needed. They also do not hesitate to defer to other professionals to aid her care. I would like to say an enormous thank you to all the staff, not just the carers, but the support staff too, the catering team, the laundry team, the caretaker, the cleaners, everyone, who have gone above and beyond during the covid pandemic. I would, and have, recommended this family-friendly care home to others. Thank you all from our family.

My mother passed away this February (2019) after having been at Hillside for 11 years. She had been in hospital for two weeks previously with a chest infection. She was so pleased to get back to the care home, her home and her second family as she called it!
I cannot praise all the staff enough, care team, office, cleaning, laundry staff and even the handyman had a good rapport with her.
She had bipolar disorder so could be challenging at times! All the staff in the whole of the building treated her with respect, as she was first on the residential floor then had to go to the EMI floor as her illness progressed. The care team knew just how to manage her bipolar to a tea and kept her out of hospital many a time. She lived to be 95 years old and I put this down to 11 years of care from this amazing team. I think Hillside is a hotel for the elderly with built-in care.

It's such a shame that the managers keep coming and going, that seems the only downfall of this particular care home!

A fantastic friendly caring home, the staff are all excellent, carers, cleaners, laundry, reception and kitchen staff are all amazing. The home is spotless and maintained to a high standard. There is a real family feel to this care home, and the layout of the home is excellent for my mother who has dementia. I would recommend it to anyone. A well-managed establishment.

My mother recently arrived at Hillside Lodge, and when I visited it before she arrived, I felt very comfortable placing her there. Since that time my brother and I have visited numerous times and we can only say the level of care and kindness is everything we could have hoped for. The home itself is spotless and well cared for (recently completely redecorated), and the staff in every area have been wonderful. I can rest easy at night knowing my mother is in good hands. They have done a beautiful job making the place cosy and bright with lots of lovely art and positive messages. The place is decorated very festively and creatively for Christmas, which I know puts a smile on residents, staff and visitors alike. This is exactly the kind of place I hoped we would find for my mother. Huge relief to know she's there.

My aunt was transferred to Hillside Lodge from about care home as she needs nursing care, not just residential care. She is now receiving end of life care and I cannot praise the staff enough for the care and support they are providing. As next of kin I am fully involved in decisions and my input is welcomed and appreciated by the staff. Even if Hillside is a longer journey for relatives I would strongly urge you to consider Hillside Lodge.

My mother is very happy in this home and it is the best she has been in, there were three others for rehabilitation. This home is light and airy with beautiful decoration. The staff are always friendly and helpful. The food looks great which my mother enjoys. It is such a relief that she is in the residence.

I feel very comfortable when I visit my mother and can make a cup of tea after travelling a long distance.

Staff are lovely, full of humour and obviously like their work.

My mum moved here from another nearby home (which was awful) and the difference in standards is unbelievable. Hillside Lodge is such a happy, safe place - I never worry about my mum when I'm away as I know she is well looked after.

Excellent care home. This home I would highly recommend. The staff are so caring and always happy, it is lovely to see smiley faces when you walk through the entrance door. The home is always lovely and clean and with pictures etc on the walls, it looks so homely. Entertainment is excellent too for the residents in this home and mustn't forget the food excellent, cater for all and always a choice on the menu. This home is first class, what else can I say.

We, the resident's relatives, have nothing but praise for the staff and the home.

The accommodation is excellent and spotlessly clean. The decor is also great. The management is first class. They listen to the residents and staff re any problems. Like any care home, it is only as good as the Carers. At Hillside they are PEARLS, hard-working, pleasant and professional and the residents come first, a great thing.

When there is a need to have a loved one placed into care you hear and see so many bad things. But there are care homes that are good and Hillside Lodge is in my opinion brilliant, from the cleanliness of the home to the food, and as for the staff, they are simply marvellous. The care and support they give is beyond first class. Words will never do them enough justice and I thank them for everything they do for my mother and all the residents.

Hannah Peppard
Hannah PeppardJob Title:Deputy ManagerJoined: 2011

I joined Hillside Lodge and Shaw healthcare 9 years ago as a young 18 year old. I can honestly say, I have enjoyed every day.

I began as a support worker and felt I quickly bonded with the team. I then went on to take on an administrator role along side my support worker role. When a post of Team leader became available I jumped at the chance and loved the responsibility of the role.

I progressed again in December 2019 to take on my new and current role of Deputy Managers.

I love my current role as I am able to combine so many factors of my previous roles working closely with the residents, staff, residents loved ones, our head office and outside care practitioners. I enjoy working with people and get great satisfaction by providing the residents at Hillside with high quality care. Carmen and I work very closely together in the same office. Throughout this pandemic I have spent more time with Carmen and the team than my own family. We have regular meetings with the senior nurse and also work very closely with her to ensure the wellbeing of the residents.

From all my wonderful memories, I would say the special memory of mine was when I was a support worker on the dementia unit a lady had her 105th Birthday, all the team made this day so special for her and I will never forget the joy on that ladies face.

Qualifications include:
Health and social care level 3 diploma
Health and social care level 3 apprenticeship – Distinction
Health and social care level 2 diploma

Award in awareness of Dementia level 2

Anna Laker
Anna LakerJob Title:Service AdministratorJoined: 2014
I joined Shaw healthcare 6 years ago here at Hillside Lodge in a Bank Support worker role.

I fitted into the team really well and was made to feel welcome from the first day. I have progressed my roles to Senior Support worker and bank Team Leader alongside my fulltime role of Service administrator.

Hillside Lodge feels like a big extended family, I love supporting the home, staff and residents. Being one of the first people to speak with callers I really enjoy assisting with queries and being able to solve them! My work on the floor defiantly helps me to understand better.

Every day is different and always lots of laughter, keeping the residents safe and happy is always our aim.

One of my best memories of the home was celebrating our 10 year anniversary when we had a big party with residents, families staff and people from the community. I also really enjoyed attending the National Shaw Star awards in 2016 in Oxford.

Qualifications: NVQ level 2 office administration

Customer service in the business sector.

I have also completed distance learning courses with the North East Surrey College: in Common Health Conditions, Principles of dementia care, preparing to work in adult social care, Principles of end life care, all 4 of which I have obtained certificates in.

Kayleigh Bushby
Kayleigh BushbyJob Title:Administrator / Activity ChampionJoined: 2011

I have worked at Hillside Lodge for 9 years.

I started at Hillside Lodge full time as a catering and domestic assistant. Right from the first day, I felt like I was part of the team.

I have also worked in the laundry full time. I love seeing the residents everyday and having a chat.

About 4 years ago I started as working as a full time Activity champion more recently I have reduced this to part time. I was given the opportunity to work part time as a service administrator. I am really enjoying this and chatting with families and health professionals.

I love both of my current roles, they are both very different and I love the mix. I love seeing the residents smiling, happy and supporting them with their daily activities and social interactions which are so important in a person’s wellbeing.

I have had many special moments working here at Hillside Lodge but the most special memory would be meeting some amazing characters through their journey here at Hillside Lodge.
