My dad has been in Woodland Care Home for respite care for just under two weeks. Although there is a shortage of staff in a lot of care homes, we've found Woodland staff to be caring. The manager is always willing to listen to any concerns and, as a family, we are encouraged to get involved with the
social events they have. We are now in discussions to make my dad a resident there as our initial experience has been very positive and most importantly my dad seems happy - please take into account that these views are based on a short stay. We haven't experienced everything.

I've been a regular visitor to my sister. She is very happy and contented. I've noticed a good improvement in her general health. She's had her teeth sorted out and is always praising how good the staff are. Several relations visited, and we all agree our family members couldn't be anywhere better.
There is a very upbeat feel about the whole care home, and always many activities going on. The whole staff are very smiley and helpful.

I have already written a review but feel the need to write another following Covid. Mum was sent here by the NHS a few years ago following a life-changing stroke, going from being independent to all care from her bed and fed via a tube in her stomach. You hear such bad stories via the press and was
naturally worried but over the weeks months and years, I don't think we could have had much better care. In fact, Woodlands fought with me to have my mum stay there and upon reflection, I am truly grateful for this. During Covid we were updated as much as possible, Mother passed in January we were well informed and recommendations were given to me for which I am grateful. Even now I miss going there putting my feet up sitting with Mum and chilling out, a short time there but leaving good memories. I cannot rate the food as Mum didn't eat solids but it looked and smelt awesome.

My partner became poorly at the beginning of January 2021 and was taken to hospital, which is where he remained until he was moved to Woodlands Care Home in March. When he arrived there, he was very malnourished, had no interest in anything and had lost his spark. Within a couple of weeks, the transformation
was amazing. He began to eat, hold a conversation and discovered his sense of humour. The staff are amazing. It was through their caring, consideration and encouragement he has made the progress he has. He is on palliative care and has always been treated with dignity and respect by the staff. I have never seen any unhappy faces when I have been to visit, and nothing is ever too much trouble. He receives the day to day care and support, which he needs in an amazing care home. As his partner, I could not wish for him to be in a better place. Thank you to you all.

Unfortunately, the care home has really plummeted in the last year. Carers are understaffed and the ones that are, are super underappreciated. Lost a lot of good ones recently.
The manager is super rude and unhelpful.
Home has lost its medication license, something to think about. Also, the van is
no longer available for use, so residents spend a lot of time inside.
Shout out to the activities coordinator, always kept Gran busy.
Cleaning ladies were a pleasure to talk to.
Safe to say we’re glad Gran has now moved after four years, she was getting very depressed.
Reply from Anita Brian, Home Manager at Woodland Care HomeWhen I spoke to your Gran she told us that she was happy at Woodlands but wished to move to be closer to her daughter. She had lost some friends recently which left her feeling lonely and in low mood which I understood and sympathised with. We worked hard to support her and so I was surprised and saddened at your comments, I wanted to respond. Staffing is reviewed regularly and relates to the needs of the residents. Any recent staff turnover was due to personal reasons, I am not aware of anyone feeling underappreciated. We have never had a “Medication license”. We are a nursing home but your Gran was a residential funded resident and we are legally required to refer to district nurses to administer certain medication and manage dressings. The specially adapted minibus was not used throughout the pandemic and depreciated. As restrictions have eased a new bus has been delivered to the home.
I hope this helps to allay any concerns and I am happy to discuss further.

Where do I start? When we first went to view the home my sister and I were impressed with the Manageress who since that day has struggled to hold a conversation or even acknowledge any of our family who visits our Mum. The staff turnover is high and at weekends trying to get a member of staff to attend
and help Mum to the toilet is really difficult and on numerous occasions, Mum has had an accident.
Residents still haven't had their flu jabs and booster jabs, these are elderly vulnerable people.
Mum is left in bed fully clothed and regularly misses meals because she is left in bed.
Meal portions are small and food/drinks we tell the home Mum doesn't like are still served up.
We are in the process of moving our Mum as she has lost weight and feel that due to lack of staff the care is minimal.
Reply from Anita Brian, Home Mananger at Woodland Care HomeWe are saddened that your mother has moved. We feel we did our utmost to care and support her and there are some areas I need to respond to. The staffing levels at Woodlands are consistent through the week and any staff turnover was due to personal reasons. We are not allowed to administer vaccines, all residents were vaccinated before your mother left. Some of your requests we felt wouldn’t be in your mother’s best interests but we have always consulted with you. Her weight remained stable at Woodlands and we offered her smaller portions of food through the day and night which she preferred, always something she enjoyed. She did sleep for long periods but she was awake for a long periods. So as not to disturb her she did sometimes sleep fully clothed in bed but she was always comfortable. I understand how disappointing it was when she was asleep when you visited and I appreciate you didn't always get to see her interacting with people and enjoying walks with staff.

My brothers and I are most grateful to the staff for the caring way in which they looked after our mum during her stay at Woodland.
In need of tube feeding, doubly incontinent and at times in some pain the staff did their very best to tend to her needs and make her as comfortable as possible. In normal
times she particularly enjoyed the activities and interacting with other residents and in the end,
came to call it her 'home'. The fact that Covid was kept at bay for 14 months is a tribute to the dedication of the staff as one can only imagine how impossible and thankless their job was during lockdown. I would not hesitate to recommend this lovely care home.

My mum was placed in a woodland care home for palliative treatment by the NHS, her every single need was cared for and myself and my family were very welcome even during the pandemic. When she passed away in their care in September we were treated with fantastic dignity and I would like to extend my
thanks to all the staff who made the last months of her life as comfy as could be.

Woodland looked after my mum for about 3 years until she passed away and I was always impressed with the love and care with which the staff treated mum. Staff were always attentive and understanding even though mum suffered from dementia. I felt reassured that mum was in a better place at Woodlands
than her last few years living in her own home. The acid test was with mum herself who seemed happy at Woodlands.

My mother, who had developed dementia in her 90s, died peacefully in January 2021 after spending three uplifting years in the home. Her care there was exceptional, and the staff outstanding in their professionalism, compassion and humour. The home invested huge energy and resources into keeping the
residents occupied with activities, visits and concerts, even when the home had to become a fortress because of covid-19. The home took extraordinary measures to keep covid at bay during the first wave of infections when residents tragically succumbed in many other care homes around the country. Although the virus eventually sneaked in during the second wave, the home did all it could to manage a very difficult situation, with many staff forced to isolate and stay at home, stretching those still available to the limit. I have nothing but praise for the home and its staff and have no hesitation recommending it to other families

The staff were very friendly, supportive and kept us up to date regarding my mother's wellbeing. We visited lots of care homes before deciding on Woodlands and we were not disappointed. The activities allowed residents to get to know one another and build lasting friendships.
It's a big responsibility
to place loved ones in the care of others, however, we have no regrets regarding Woodlands and were pleased with the friendly care my mother received from all the staff.
The staff have been through so much during this pandemic and an element of understanding and support should be shown to all these very valuable caring people.

My mum was a resident for over 6 years until she passed away in August and throughout this time she received the most compassionate, attentive, fun-filled care that I could have wished for. She had dementia which, as time went on, progressed to a level where she was immobile, virtually blind and, for
most of the time, unable to communicate but this did not stop the carers from constantly talking to her, holding her hand, cuddling her, singing to her as well as all the routine cleaning and feeding caregiving. To me, the epitome of a perfect carer is when a resident, who so rarely showed emotion, kissed her arm and she had to leave the room to compose herself because that gesture meant so very much to her. I have nothing but praise for everybody at the home, not only while Mum was there but also the support I have had since her death.

Speaking to my mother, we feel the care in the home has gone downhill. Not enough staff on duty, especially at weekends. Staff taking a while to see to resident's needs. High turnover of staff. Not enough information to residents' families on the updates of the care home, staff, facilities and activities.
Reply from Anita Brain, Care Manager at Woodland Care HomeI am sorry you feel this way. Since January this year we experienced an outbreak of COVID 19 and our occupancy numbers reduced. Since then the home has increased its occupancy and dependency levels of the residents have been reviewed, in anticipation of each admission and then staffing levels increased accordingly. This ensures we always have an adequate number of staff on duty. The staffing levels are the same 7 days a week and do not change in any way at weekends. Throughout the pandemic, I sent weekly emails to all families with updates about the home and the residents. This has decreased in frequency now that we have been able to resume visiting. My door is always open and am happy to chat to relatives in person, by phone or by email, as I do with yourself; we also hold regular resident and relative meetings. As a company we always place the safety of our residents first and should we need to bring in agency staff to ensure staffing levels are appropriate, then we will do so.

Always found the atmosphere in the home very positive and upbeat. Saw residents being well supported with time being given to them, to listen to them and to find solutions for their needs. I felt the decor of relatives room was modern and bright. We were long-distance visitors and are always accommodated
and made to feel welcome and with the offer of much-appreciated cups of tea/coffee.
My thoughts and prayers have been with the home during this very challenging year.

My mum has now reached the late stage of dementia. The manager has been tremendous in supporting me through this extremely difficult period. Also, every member of the team at Woodlands has shown me such kindness, support and more importantly, exceptional care for my mum, which obviously means so much
to me. They ask me, have I had a drink, food etc to ensure that I'm looking after myself too. Woodlands is a family who all work together in supporting each other whilst giving exceptional care, love, kindness and support to the people who live there. I think the manager and team make it a lovely home for residents and staff.

My brother lived in Woodland for just over 2 years. He recently had a couple of stays in the hospital as he had learning difficulties and communication problems, which was always a concern. The manager drew up a bullet point list which clearly stated his needs and how best to communicate with him. This
was put in a clear sleeve and put in his medication bag. The hospital staff said it was so useful. This was such an incredible relief to me and so supportive to my brother. The whole team at Woodland has always endeavored to meet my brother's individual needs and supported him to live a fulfilling and happy life. Their care for him has been exemplary.

I have been highly impressed with the care and consideration my mother and I have received. The staff are friendly, well trained, ask/say before doing something, courteous and happy. The manager is excellent and is friendly, thoughtful and happy. She listens and offers advice and I am very appreciative.
My mother is suffering from old age (three weeks off 100 years old) and receives excellent care and monitoring. She is regularly checked on, spoken to and made comfortable. I am extremely pleased with my mother's care and I think highly of the home. I am also very grateful.

Current Review Score: 9.4 (9.387)

Overview of Review Score

The Review Score of 9.4 (9.387) out of 10 for Woodland Care Home is based on a) the Average Rating and b) the number of positive Reviews.

  1. The Average Rating is 4.6 out of 5 from 11 Reviews in the last 24 months.
  2. The score for the number of positive Reviews is 4.8 out of 5 from 11 positive Reviews in the last 24 months.

Detailed Breakdown of Review Score

The maximum Review Score for a Care Home is 10, which is made up from the Average Rating of Reviews (maximum of 5 points) and the Number of Reviews (maximum of 5 points) in the last 24 months:

  1. 5 Points are available for the Average Rating from all Reviews in the last 24 months. The Average Rating of 4.612 for Woodland Care Home is calculated as follows: ( (86 Excellents x 5) + (36 Goods x 4) + (7 Satisfactorys x 3) ) ÷ 129 Ratings = 4.612
  2. 5 Points are available for the number of Positive Reviews in the last 24 months. A Positive Review is defined as any Review with an 'Overall Experience' of '4' or '5' (out of a max rating '5'). The 4.775 Points relating to the number of positive Reviews for Woodland Care Home is based on 11 positive Reviews in the last 24 months and is calculated as per below:

The 5 points available are broken down as follows:

    1. 4 points are available for the first 20 Positive Reviews in the last 24 months; 3 points for the first Positive Review, 0.125 Points for each of the next four Positive Reviews, 0.05 Points for the next five Positive Reviews, and finally 0.025 Points for the next ten Positive Reviews. (1st = 3.000, 2nd = 0.125, 3rd = 0.125, 4th = 0.125, 5th = 0.125, 6th = 0.050, 7th = 0.050, 8th = 0.050, 9th = 0.050, 10th = 0.050, 11th = 0.025, 12th = 0.025, 13th = 0.025, 14th = 0.025, 15th = 0.025, 16th = 0.025, 17th = 0.025, 18th = 0.025, 19th = 0.025, 20th = 0.025) 3 + 0.125 + 0.125 + 0.125 + 0.125 + 0.05 + 0.05 + 0.05 + 0.05 + 0.05 + 0.025 = 3.775
    2. 1 point is available for the number of Positive Reviews reaching 20% of the registered maximum number of service users in the last 24 months. If this number is partially reached, then that proportion of 1 point is given. eg a Care Home registered for a maximum of 50 service users has to reach 10 Positive Reviews to receive 1 point, if it has 7 reviews it will receive 0.7 points. 20% of the 46 registered maximum number of service users is 9.2, which has been reached with 11 Positive reviews. Points = 1
  3. When a Review is submitted by someone who has previously submitted a Review, only the latest Review will count towards the Review Score.
  4. If a Care Home does not have a review in the last 24 months, then it will not have a Review Score.
