Mabbs Hall care home delivers nursing and mental health care to up to 29 residents.

Mabbs Hall is located in the small market town of Mildenhall, Surrey. It is a short drive into Cambridge and just a mile from Thetford Forest Park, a 47,000-acre forest providing plenty of opportunities for excursions and exploring. Closer to home, there are numerous shops and restaurants moments from the home, as well as a large park and the River Lark.

The home itself is elegantly decorated and sits in a quiet, residential close. Most bedrooms are single but there are two double rooms for couples. CCTV is located in communal areas including the two lounges, a dining room and a landscaped garden, where wildlife such as deer often roam among the raised flowerbeds that keen gardeners can use.

There are choices of home-cooked balanced meals available at mealtimes and dietary requirements are catered for.

My mother is as settled as could be expected for someone with severe dementia. The staff work very hard, are welcoming, polite and respectful and strive to make a homely environment. The fabric of the building is slowly being updated with air conditioning and new doors.

When my mother was initially admitted it was at the start of Covid I had no choice where she went. She was fully competent but deaf (2020 August) My initial reaction was despair (I wouldn't put a dog in there) I was not able to visit & could not communicate when we eventually visited, nothing changed
that vibe. However, now new management & staff in place I have nothing but praise for team. Mum's health is declining but care is excellent. We can talk to any member of staff & they know what is going on. So much happier.
Reply from Alex Keevans, PA to Operations Director at Mabbs Hall Care HomeThank you for sharing your experience so openly. We truly appreciate your honesty about the challenges during the early days of Covid, which were difficult for everyone, and we are sorry that your initial impression was one of despair.
We are grateful, however, that you have seen the positive changes brought about by our new management and dedicated team. It means a great deal to know that you now feel confident in the care your mother is receiving and that communication with staff has improved. We will continue to work hard to ensure your mother, and all our residents, receive the highest standard of care, dignity, and compassion.

Mabbs Hall cared for our dad, Joe, who had severe dementia, and we cannot thank them enough for everything they did. From the management to the cleaners, every single member of staff showed incredible patience, kindness and understanding throughout his time there.

The atmosphere in the home is calm,

supportive and compassionate and you can tell the team genuinely care about the residents. The nursing staff deserve a special mention for their professionalism and the dignity they showed Joe each day, even during the most challenging moments.

We also want to highlight the manager, who has clearly worked tirelessly to transform Mabbs Hall into the exceptional care home it is today. Her leadership and dedication are evident in the way the whole team carries themselves.

Thank you to everyone at Mabbs Hall for the outstanding care, respect and comfort you provided. You made an unimaginably difficult journey easier, and we are truly grateful

What a difference a care home makes, i cannot believe how much of a change i have seen in my mother since moving here. She has now got a smile on her face whenever we visit, such a relief from seeing her in tears at her previous home. Everything about Mabbs Hall i recommend from management to all carers
and staff. Thanks for all your hard work

My sister had to go into care as a result of a broken hip.
She has been shown so much love and support from the staff that we feel she could not have found a better place to go before she dies.
Sadly that happened last evening and all the family have been shown so much love and support, we cannot
fault them. The staff supported her sons and family throughout.
Thank you so much. Cannot fail to recommend them if you are looking for care.

With the chef leaving, there was a promotion within the kitchen and we now have a "chefette". I would like to say how much the food has improved. Previously, the food was very spicy and there was a lot of waste. Having eaten the food at both the Christmas party and Christmas Day dinner, I cannot praise
the the new chef enough.
Reply from Zeta Zeta, Operations Director at Mabbs Hall Care HomeThank you for these kind words and the recommendation of our revised kitchen team. I wholeheartedly agree, this change has vastly improved the residents' food provision, making it more aligned to their preferences and tastes, I will make sure I pass this review on to the team.

My Mum entered Mabbs Hall under a 2-week respite as her dementia had deteriorated. She is now a permanent resident and as a family we could not be happier. Mabbs Hall is a friendly caring and approachable home. She is very well cared for and her needs are met to a high standard. The nursing team is
excellent, always friendly, and shows my Mum lots of kindness. The management is excellent and I can see improvements weekly. The communication is excellent. Overall very happy, and so is my Mum!

My mother-in-law has now been here for 4 months now, and I must say what a difference I have noticed in my mother-in-law, and the actual place itself since the new manager has been here, and also the staff are so friendly and professional with the residents, and they also make a lovely cup of tea, it
has really put our minds at rest, and not so stressed now she is here, I would definitely recommend Mabbs Hall and give them 5 stars for everything.

My sister arrived as an emergency admission. She was very poorly indeed. She was met by a nurse and at least two carers who treated her with great care and respect. She was made comfortable and, with good nursing, has rallied. She continues to be cared for with great care and respect. She is comfortable
and feels safe.

Current Review Score: 9.7 (9.696)

Overview of Review Score

The Review Score of 9.7 (9.696) out of 10 for Mabbs Hall Care Home is based on a) the Average Rating and b) the number of positive Reviews.

  1. The Average Rating is 4.7 out of 5 from 18 Reviews in the last 24 months.
  2. The score for the number of positive Reviews is 5.0 out of 5 from 18 positive Reviews in the last 24 months.

Detailed Breakdown of Review Score

The maximum Review Score for a Care Home is 10, which is made up from the Average Rating of Reviews (maximum of 5 points) and the Number of Reviews (maximum of 5 points) in the last 24 months:

  1. 5 Points are available for the Average Rating from all Reviews in the last 24 months. The Average Rating of 4.746 for Mabbs Hall Care Home is calculated as follows: ( (160 Excellents x 5) + (38 Goods x 4) + (7 Satisfactorys x 3) ) ÷ 205 Ratings = 4.746
  2. 5 Points are available for the number of Positive Reviews in the last 24 months. A Positive Review is defined as any Review with an 'Overall Experience' of '4' or '5' (out of a max rating '5'). The 4.95 Points relating to the number of positive Reviews for Mabbs Hall Care Home is based on 18 positive Reviews in the last 24 months and is calculated as per below:

The 5 points available are broken down as follows:

    1. 4 points are available for the first 20 Positive Reviews in the last 24 months; 3 points for the first Positive Review, 0.125 Points for each of the next four Positive Reviews, 0.05 Points for the next five Positive Reviews, and finally 0.025 Points for the next ten Positive Reviews. (1st = 3.000, 2nd = 0.125, 3rd = 0.125, 4th = 0.125, 5th = 0.125, 6th = 0.050, 7th = 0.050, 8th = 0.050, 9th = 0.050, 10th = 0.050, 11th = 0.025, 12th = 0.025, 13th = 0.025, 14th = 0.025, 15th = 0.025, 16th = 0.025, 17th = 0.025, 18th = 0.025, 19th = 0.025, 20th = 0.025) 3 + 0.125 + 0.125 + 0.125 + 0.125 + 0.05 + 0.05 + 0.05 + 0.05 + 0.05 + 0.025 + 0.025 + 0.025 + 0.025 + 0.025 + 0.025 + 0.025 + 0.025 = 3.95
    2. 1 point is available for the number of Positive Reviews reaching 20% of the registered maximum number of service users in the last 24 months. If this number is partially reached, then that proportion of 1 point is given. eg a Care Home registered for a maximum of 50 service users has to reach 10 Positive Reviews to receive 1 point, if it has 7 reviews it will receive 0.7 points. 20% of the 29 registered maximum number of service users is 5.8, which has been reached with 18 Positive reviews. Points = 1
  3. When a Review is submitted by someone who has previously submitted a Review, only the latest Review will count towards the Review Score.
  4. If a Care Home does not have a review in the last 24 months, then it will not have a Review Score.
