Castle Hill House is a family owned care home, situated in landscaped gardens in a quiet area of Bodmin. The home specialises in providing 24-hour sympathetic, professionally given care to mainly elderly clients. The team cater for residential clients with varying care needs.

The bedrooms at Castle Hill House are nicely decorated and furnished throughout. Designed for maximum comfort, each room also has its own modern nurse-call system so that staff can be called 24 hours a day.

There are a variety of bedrooms which are either traditionally styled in the original house which dates back to 1865, or newer purpose built rooms with en suite facilities in the recent extension. Most rooms are single rooms, for clients to enjoy their own space. However there are a few rooms which are larger and are for those who enjoy some company and wish to share.

Trained cooks and the rest of the catering team take great pride in providing home cooked nutritious and varied meals, using fresh produce and high quality ingredients. Vegetarian dishes and special dietary needs are always catered for, as are people's likes and dislikes.

My Mother after being diagnosed with vascular dementia had a 2-week respite stay at Castle Hill House in February, which she enjoyed. In April she returned as a permanent resident. All the staff are very friendly, kind, and caring with an extra special mention to the Activity Coordinator, who goes above
and beyond to bring some fun and sunshine to the resident's lives. The food is very good and all the communal areas are bright, clean, and welcoming. The resident's rooms are cosy, comfortable and can be personalised with personal belongings. I am very happy that Mum has now settled in and is now living her best possible life, in a lovely home!
Reply from Lucy Ledger, Admin/Accounts at Castle Hill HouseThank you for such a lovely review, we are so pleased your mum has settled into life at Castle Hill House so well. We aim to be a home from home so your words mean a lot to us. We will pass your wonderful comments on to all our teams. Thank you again.

My Mother had needed respite, following two falls on consecutive days. She had become overtired.
Castle Hill gave her the care she needed to rest and recuperate. Her negative feelings towards care homes have completely gone. Fantastic food. Wonderful staff and spotlessly clean. Now happy to return
to enable her to be independent should she need a rest.
Reply from Lucy Ledger, Admin/Accounts at Castle Hill HouseThank you for your lovely review. When we hear how well a resident enjoyed their time with us when they came in for respite we couldn't be happier. We are pleased your Mother enjoyed her stay with us. Thank you for taking the time to acknowledge all of our wonderful teams as well, so much care is put into their jobs from every department. Thank you again, we will be sure to pass on your comments.

The staff really upped their game as my father's health declined. They have always been good, but when he needed extra care, they responded really well. There were a lot of visits and generally checking to see that all was OK. They went the extra mile to try and find out why he wasn't feeling so well.
Reply from Lucy Ledger, Admin/Accounts at Castle Hill HouseThank you for your review, we can't express how much it means to our entire team when families express their thanks and appreciation for our staff that go above and beyond. The team do this because they care deeply for the residents and they love their jobs but it is always nice to have your efforts noticed and appreciated. We will be sure to pass on your words. Thank you.

Staff very welcoming and very obliging. My wife is bedridden and cannot enjoy the full facilities and activities hence left comments blank. They call on her frequently so she is never unattended for long. Their response is fairly quick to personal alarm. Food is excellent and reaction to special requests
is very good and at any time of the day. Medicines are readily given.
Reply from Lucy Ledger, Business Support at Castle Hill HouseThank you for your very lovely review of our home and staff. We are very proud of the level of inclusion experienced by all our residents due to the effort of the staffing teams day to day at Castle Hill House regardless of their physical capabilities. The little touches matter and are what hopefully make Castle Hill a home from home for people.

The staff really threw themselves into activities over the festive season. Creating a fun and cheerful atmosphere both for residents and their visitors. The care home was a warm and welcoming atmosphere as soon as you enter the first set of doors and continues throughout, which is why it was chosen.
Security, care and resident's welfare are high on their agenda. A great place.

Mum arrived from hospital to Castle House Care Home. Mum's experience of three months in hospital had left her confused and agitated, compounded by her dementia. It was a worrying time having to leave our mum in the care of total strangers. We need not have worried. From when Mum left the ambulance,
it was obvious the care team were genuinely caring and concerned about Mum. Their focus was on settling Mum into her new home. Unfortunately, it took Mum several weeks to settle, this being due to the hospital stay (covid, isolation, noise, etc.). The team were honest about Mum's suitability to Caste Hill House, but through their care and attention the team learnt Mum's little ways and the extent of her dementia and Mum finally settled. In addition, Mum has medical needs that the doctor and district nurse attend to, with which the care team facilitate. The team also keep me up to date with Mum's progress and changes in medication. We four children visit Mum regularly at varying times and witness the Caste Hill House team going about their business and can't help but notice their genuine happy, caring and focused demeanor towards residents and visitors alike.
Reply from Lucy Ledger, Business Support at Castle Hill HouseThank you for such a thoughtful and honest review, these can be reassuring to others in your position as they make the move into care homes with their own loved ones. Our staff work tirelessly to provide truly person-centered care for every single resident and your review reflects this wonderfully. We hope to see some of you at the summer fete.

The home is clean and has a peaceful atmosphere. The carers are kind and I am welcome to partake in Mum's care on my frequent visits. I'm well informed of any change in her condition.
There is a good sense of teamwork - the office staff and handyman are helpful. The kitchen staff have taken the trouble
to give Mum crockery and cutlery to help her poor eyesight and arthritic hands. The laundry team take great care of her clothes - even her teddy has been on a gentle wash cycle! Super programme of daily activities.

I went to Castle Hill House Care Home for respite after an operation. Because of my MS, I could not care for myself and needed help, especially getting into bed. However many times I needed help in the night, a member of staff would come on my call button. Day and night, staff were friendly. The carers
encouraged me to help. Unfortunately, while I was there, I was taken very ill, the staff were professional, efficient and above all, caring as paramedics came to "blue light" me to hospital.

My mother recently passed away in Castle Hill Care Home after being a resident for over two years. Although I don't live in the area we have family close by visiting regularly and in frequent contact with the staff. We have always been treated courteously by wonderful staff and Mum always said that
she was so lucky to be in such a special place.
Every single member of their team has treated Mum with such dignity, care and warmth, especially in her last days. We can't thank them enough for everything they have done for her and all of our family.

My dad has settled in well to his new home. Nothing is too much trouble for the staff. He is extremely well cared for. Every member of staff I have met has been friendly and smiling and takes the time to greet me and my dad confirms that any request he makes is granted - not with a tut or sigh but with
genuine willingness and kindness. Well done Castle Hill House Care Home.

My mother required residential respite care after a period in hospital and from enquiry to hospital discharge, the process has been streamlined and efficient with clear lines of communication. The excellent care team have made my mother and relatives very welcome and she has settled in well which will
support her recovery. Everyone has been extremely kind and thoughtful and our thanks goes out to them. My mother has a beautiful room with a view of the Cornish countryside, and it will really help with her recovery.

Current Review Score: 9.7 (9.734)

Overview of Review Score

The Review Score of 9.7 (9.734) out of 10 for Castle Hill House is based on a) the Average Rating and b) the number of positive Reviews.

  1. The Average Rating is 4.7 out of 5 from 26 Reviews in the last 24 months.
  2. The score for the number of positive Reviews is 5.0 out of 5 from 26 positive Reviews in the last 24 months.

Detailed Breakdown of Review Score

The maximum Review Score for a Care Home is 10, which is made up from the Average Rating of Reviews (maximum of 5 points) and the Number of Reviews (maximum of 5 points) in the last 24 months:

  1. 5 Points are available for the Average Rating from all Reviews in the last 24 months. The Average Rating of 4.734 for Castle Hill House is calculated as follows: ( (233 Excellents x 5) + (68 Goods x 4) + (7 Satisfactorys x 3) ) ÷ 308 Ratings = 4.734
  2. 5 Points are available for the number of Positive Reviews in the last 24 months. A Positive Review is defined as any Review with an 'Overall Experience' of '4' or '5' (out of a max rating '5'). The 5 Points relating to the number of positive Reviews for Castle Hill House is based on 26 positive Reviews in the last 24 months and is calculated as per below:

The 5 points available are broken down as follows:

    1. 4 points are available for the first 20 Positive Reviews in the last 24 months; 3 points for the first Positive Review, 0.125 Points for each of the next four Positive Reviews, 0.05 Points for the next five Positive Reviews, and finally 0.025 Points for the next ten Positive Reviews. (1st = 3.000, 2nd = 0.125, 3rd = 0.125, 4th = 0.125, 5th = 0.125, 6th = 0.050, 7th = 0.050, 8th = 0.050, 9th = 0.050, 10th = 0.050, 11th = 0.025, 12th = 0.025, 13th = 0.025, 14th = 0.025, 15th = 0.025, 16th = 0.025, 17th = 0.025, 18th = 0.025, 19th = 0.025, 20th = 0.025) 3 + 0.125 + 0.125 + 0.125 + 0.125 + 0.05 + 0.05 + 0.05 + 0.05 + 0.05 + 0.025 + 0.025 + 0.025 + 0.025 + 0.025 + 0.025 + 0.025 + 0.025 + 0.025 + 0.025 = 4
    2. 1 point is available for the number of Positive Reviews reaching 20% of the registered maximum number of service users in the last 24 months. If this number is partially reached, then that proportion of 1 point is given. eg a Care Home registered for a maximum of 50 service users has to reach 10 Positive Reviews to receive 1 point, if it has 7 reviews it will receive 0.7 points. 20% of the 43 registered maximum number of service users is 8.6, which has been reached with 26 Positive reviews. Points = 1
  3. When a Review is submitted by someone who has previously submitted a Review, only the latest Review will count towards the Review Score.
  4. If a Care Home does not have a review in the last 24 months, then it will not have a Review Score.

My name is Careen, I qualified as a nurse in 1985, back in the days when nurses wore large silver buckles and frilly hats. I’ve seen a lot of changes but one thing that never changes is my fascination with people and their stories; I have had the privilege of caring for someone whose job was to press the first new coins for the royal mint, the person who invented the TOG rating for duvets, a lady who travelled across the London Underground during the war with her handbag stuffed full of diamonds after the bank she worked for was bombed, I've even had occasion to sing ‘Happy 111th Birthday to you…’.

My days are as varied as the people that fill them, just one of many reasons why I love my job here at Castle Hill House.
