The whole team at Barchester Kernow House Care Home deserve so much praise!
From the manager and carers to the cleaners and the kitchen!
Every single person I have met has always had my dad's best interests at heart. He is treated like a person and not just his dementia diagnosis. My father is a resident
on Petherwin unit and every single time we arrive for a visit, the carers on this unit are so welcoming. I truly can't thank them enough for their caring, supportive and empathetic approach to all areas of my dad's care. They have made a hard decision a lot easier to cope with. Petherwin unit has some of the most amazing carers and deserve to be recognised for the extremely hard job that they do every day. Thank you so much.

The Millaton ward cared for my mum for the last five years of her life whilst in the later stages of Huntington's disease. She had her own personalised room which we were free to make feel like her own whilst she had a view over Cornwall; where she grew up and always wished to return to.
Most of all,
it was the passionate carers who invested so much love and dedication in their role. Not only were they amazing at making Mum feel at home but also myself and my family. This was especially appreciated during Covid times where the staff and the home did all they could to make us feel welcome whilst adhering to the social distancing restrictions.
After Covid, the staff strived to give Mum the best life she could possibly have with live music in the home, a visiting hairdresser and beautician to help residents retain as much identity and dignity as possible.
I'll always be so grateful for everything the Millaton ward did to support my family and would recommend to anybody.

My husband has only recently moved into this care home, it is quite a way to travel for me but what a lovely experience each time I have visited. A cup of tea is offered as soon as I sit down and the care team couldn't be kinder, they are so patient with other residents as well as my husband. And they
welcome dogs!

Kernow House has been exceptional from start to finish. Our dad has spent 16 months in their care, both in St Pirans and then Petherin unit. Each and every single health carer, nurse and all other staff have been so kind, caring, considerate, compassionate and friendly every time we have visited.
Dad
has never been so well-fed! It's been nice to see him smiling despite his crippling dementia.
Thank you all - and to the manager for facilitating Dad's latest move, we will miss your smiley faces!

My brother-in-law has been in St Pirans Unit since the beginning of the year. His care during his time with you has been absolutely exceptional. I am overawed by the incredible patience and kindness shown to my brother-in-law and the wonderful care he has received.

I have nothing but praise for Barchester Kernow House Care Home. My partner has settled in so well and is obviously well cared for by all the staff who are always friendly and helpful. They have made what is a horrible situation much easier to deal with. Every aspect of his care is excellent, in particular,
his personal care which was a problem in his previous placement.

I am very pleased with the care given to my father in the care home. I am lucky that I can visit him regularly, due to my timings and the nearness. However, I would have no worries if I couldn't visit for a prolonged period of time. The carers have got to know my dad, how to distract him and especially
how to keep him safe. I feel very lucky that we found him a place in this home.

I only visited Barchester Kernow House Care Home on two occasions but both times, I was struck by the positive atmosphere created by the staff. What I saw of the home was absolutely spotless, residents clean and well-dressed. It felt as though the staff cared about the residents as individuals -as borne
out by low turnover of staff.

I would just like to say how grateful I am to all the nurses/carers and staff in the Millaton unit. I am very confident in the care and support that my father receives at the home.
I live a long distance from the home and am reliably kept informed of all matters concerning him.
He has just had his 100th birthday and I was touched and impressed by the way the staff helped celebrate the occasion.
The
staff couldn't be more friendly and helpful.
I am sure that the care he receives has been a major contribution to helping him achieve his 100th birthday.

Barchester Kernow House Care Home is a wonderful home for residents with challenging conditions.
Staff are so kind and patient and highly trained to deal with the complex needs of their residents. Nursing staff are well-organised and efficient and always take time to talk to family about any issues,
no matter how small.
Food is tasty and nutritious, three hot meals a day plus supper. Any residents that cannot feed themselves are patiently fed by staff. I'm delighted to say since Dad has arrived at Kernow House, after an extensive stay in hospital, he is now putting weight back on.
The entertainment ladies work tirelessly, organising suitable and interesting daily activities and trips out which I'm sure makes a huge impact on residents' happiness.
The management of the home are all extremely knowledgeable and kind and have helped us enormously as a family.
We are so grateful to all the staff at Kernow House and delighted that we found such a wonderful home for our dear dad.

Current Review Score: 9.9 (9.862)

Overview of Review Score

The Review Score of 9.9 (9.862) out of 10 for Barchester Kernow House Care Home is based on a) the Average Rating and b) the number of positive Reviews.

  1. The Average Rating is 4.9 out of 5 from 27 Reviews in the last 24 months.
  2. The score for the number of positive Reviews is 5.0 out of 5 from 26 positive Reviews in the last 24 months.

Detailed Breakdown of Review Score

The maximum Review Score for a Care Home is 10, which is made up from the Average Rating of Reviews (maximum of 5 points) and the Number of Reviews (maximum of 5 points) in the last 24 months:

  1. 5 Points are available for the Average Rating from all Reviews in the last 24 months. The Average Rating of 4.862 for Barchester Kernow House Care Home is calculated as follows: ( (276 Excellents x 5) + (27 Goods x 4) + (8 Satisfactorys x 3) ) ÷ 311 Ratings = 4.862
  2. 5 Points are available for the number of Positive Reviews in the last 24 months. A Positive Review is defined as any Review with an 'Overall Experience' of '4' or '5' (out of a max rating '5'). The 5 Points relating to the number of positive Reviews for Barchester Kernow House Care Home is based on 26 positive Reviews in the last 24 months and is calculated as per below:

The 5 points available are broken down as follows:

    1. 4 points are available for the first 20 Positive Reviews in the last 24 months; 3 points for the first Positive Review, 0.125 Points for each of the next four Positive Reviews, 0.05 Points for the next five Positive Reviews, and finally 0.025 Points for the next ten Positive Reviews. (1st = 3.000, 2nd = 0.125, 3rd = 0.125, 4th = 0.125, 5th = 0.125, 6th = 0.050, 7th = 0.050, 8th = 0.050, 9th = 0.050, 10th = 0.050, 11th = 0.025, 12th = 0.025, 13th = 0.025, 14th = 0.025, 15th = 0.025, 16th = 0.025, 17th = 0.025, 18th = 0.025, 19th = 0.025, 20th = 0.025) 3 + 0.125 + 0.125 + 0.125 + 0.125 + 0.05 + 0.05 + 0.05 + 0.05 + 0.05 + 0.025 + 0.025 + 0.025 + 0.025 + 0.025 + 0.025 + 0.025 + 0.025 + 0.025 + 0.025 = 4
    2. 1 point is available for the number of Positive Reviews reaching 20% of the registered maximum number of service users in the last 24 months. If this number is partially reached, then that proportion of 1 point is given. eg a Care Home registered for a maximum of 50 service users has to reach 10 Positive Reviews to receive 1 point, if it has 7 reviews it will receive 0.7 points. 20% of the 85 registered maximum number of service users is 17, which has been reached with 26 Positive reviews. Points = 1
  3. When a Review is submitted by someone who has previously submitted a Review, only the latest Review will count towards the Review Score.
  4. If a Care Home does not have a review in the last 24 months, then it will not have a Review Score.

Welcome to Kernow House, my name is Leigh and I am the General Manager at the home.

I am a registered mental health nurse. Prior to becoming a nurse, I spent 13 years as a soldier in the British Army, serving in Iraq, Afghanistan and other overseas operations. As a Manager, I put my leadership skills to good use when managing the home. I ensure we deliver person-centred care in a therapeutic manner and share my knowledge with other staff, both within the home and with outside professionals.
