I feel Barchester Kernow House Care Home is caring, friendly and they have my husband's needs just right. It feels homely and not institutionalised, very relaxed, they can not do enough for me and my family when visiting. I have no worries and know he is safe and truly cared for. It's hard for me to
let go and visit nearly everyday. Still getting used to losing the husband and friend I had six months ago.

My sister lives on Millaton Unit and has complex and challenging needs. She is cared for by excellent, compassionate, kind and professional staff who are well versed in her care needs. All the staff make the effort to get to know our family members too and to receive a warm welcome on visiting makes
a big difference to us. We are eternally grateful.

Although the past few weeks have been exceptionally hard for the staff they have done a wonderful job in doing all they can to keep residents safe. I am an essential caregiver for my husband and so thankfully can still visit him. I can tell he is very fond of the staff and it shows that in the way they
care for him it is likewise.
Christmas was still celebrated and the home looked lovely. Every care was taken so everything carried on the same.

It's difficult for me to express opinions in detail as I was unable to enter the building because of Covid restrictions. My views are based on conversations with the nurses and carers at Kernow House and what my husband has said during the time he was there (9months) and since he has returned home.

I was delighted to see how well cared for my cousin is. She has made some progress since moving here and it is good to see her walking again. She seems really happy. Her room is beautiful and kept really clean. She is cared for by lovely staff who really know her. Everyone we met on our visit went out
of their way in making us feel really welcome. It's a caring and friendly environment.

My brother moved to Kernow House on May 30th just over 4 years ago until he passed away on 30th July 2021. I regularly received letters and phone calls telling me all the things he had been doing with activities, storytelling, pop up cafe, methodist service, bingo. Before covid enjoying minibus trips,
all his personal needs were taken care of with kindness and dignity. Hair cuts, nails, feet teeth and glasses. What a wonderful choice of meals he told me about he really enjoyed the food there. He had really enjoyed his years abt Kernow House and could not have wished for anything better. The staff were all kind people.
Reply from Amanda Chichester, General Manager at Barchester Kernow House Care HomeThank you so much for your wonderful review. Your brother was very much a part of our Kernow family and is sadly missed. I can't tell you how much this lifts the staff during a particularly difficult time. We really do appreciate the time you took to review us. Take care and all the best for the future. Amanda

Arriving for the first time to visit my dad, I was nervous about what I would find after a previous horrendous so-called care home nearly killed him. I was greeted by happy, friendly and informative staff who all appeared to know exactly what dad liked/disliked. Dad was wonderful and much improved.
He looked well and could converse for the first time in months. This in my view, is all down to the TLC shown by the wonderful staff.

Over the eight months my mum spent in Kernow House myself and my family were very happy with the standard of care she received. Obviously it was an extremely challenging time for the carers, Mum and ourselves due to the restrictions posed by the Covid pandemic. Visiting had to be curtailed for long
periods of time and activities were also limited due to the ongoing situation. However the carers and nurses went above and beyond to ensure the safety of all their residents including Mum and did their very best to keep her comfortable, pain free and as happy as possible. She enjoyed the food and when we were able to visit she looked clean and well cared for. The staff were always friendly and helpful, at the end of the phone when needed. We only wish that she could have experienced life in Kernow House during "normal" times.
At the end of her life she was treated with gentleness, kindness and respect as indeed were we. What more can I say? Thank you to all the staff at Kernow House.

Kernow House certainly deserves another huge thanks from us. Their care and dedication to Mum (and us all as a family) have been outstanding throughout 2020. When our weekly visits ended, staff were quick to offer Skype, and this has been amazing over the past 9 months. Mum adores seeing her whole family
on a regular basis and she truly continues to share our lives. Thanks to the many staff members who have enabled this, you are all fantastic. The introduction of outdoor visits has been brilliant for Mum to see us face to face, and the new pods are so cosy in these winter months. I've also received excellent telephone updates (as required) to discuss Mum's care needs and the families meeting on Zoom was also lovely. Of course, we all miss seeing you like we did, but Mum is doing so well, always looks happy and we are 100% included in her care. Thanks also for accommodating the regular flower deliveries, her room always looks lovely. Happy New Year and best wishes.

My cousin has been a resident for many years and my brother was also a resident for 12 years. During that time, the care shown to both has been excellent. Both have suffered from Huntington's Disease and the staff are extremely knowledgeable of this condition. The staff have always been very welcoming
and supportive towards me during times of uncertainty. Additionally, there is a wide range of activities to suit everyone and the opportunity to have trips out, which have greatly enhanced the wellbeing of the residents. The building is always clean and decorated to make it feel very homely. The staff also decorate the communal areas for special occasions ie. Christmas, Easter, Remembrance Day, Halloween. The resident's birthdays are celebrated with a cake. I would have no hesitation in recommending Kernow House for either respite care or as a resident.
Reply from Amanda Chichester, General Manager at Barchester Kernow House Care HomeMany thanks for your feedback. My husband has been in a unit for 5 years and has been well cared for and treated with respect. The unit is secure and has a happy team of nurses and carers who are well trained and have always show patience and resilience in all situations. I particularly like the set up of the unit with its central
garden and when possible the residents are encouraged to use it. There is a good programme of activities led by a very capable team. I would have liked a regular update on his general health and needs and kept informed in changes in staff and management.

My mum has been a resident in Kernow House for 16 years. She has always been treated with dignity and respect. The staff have also been supportive to us as a family. Her journey has been very traumatic and upsetting at times due to her medical condition. The staff in Kernow House have been amazing at
coping with my mum's behaviour, especially when first admitted. As a family we will always be very grateful for the level/standard of care given to Mum, with staff treating her as an individual, looking at her needs and interests to enable her to enjoy her time within Kernow House.

Current Review Score: 9.9 (9.862)

Overview of Review Score

The Review Score of 9.9 (9.862) out of 10 for Barchester Kernow House Care Home is based on a) the Average Rating and b) the number of positive Reviews.

  1. The Average Rating is 4.9 out of 5 from 27 Reviews in the last 24 months.
  2. The score for the number of positive Reviews is 5.0 out of 5 from 26 positive Reviews in the last 24 months.

Detailed Breakdown of Review Score

The maximum Review Score for a Care Home is 10, which is made up from the Average Rating of Reviews (maximum of 5 points) and the Number of Reviews (maximum of 5 points) in the last 24 months:

  1. 5 Points are available for the Average Rating from all Reviews in the last 24 months. The Average Rating of 4.862 for Barchester Kernow House Care Home is calculated as follows: ( (276 Excellents x 5) + (27 Goods x 4) + (8 Satisfactorys x 3) ) ÷ 311 Ratings = 4.862
  2. 5 Points are available for the number of Positive Reviews in the last 24 months. A Positive Review is defined as any Review with an 'Overall Experience' of '4' or '5' (out of a max rating '5'). The 5 Points relating to the number of positive Reviews for Barchester Kernow House Care Home is based on 26 positive Reviews in the last 24 months and is calculated as per below:

The 5 points available are broken down as follows:

    1. 4 points are available for the first 20 Positive Reviews in the last 24 months; 3 points for the first Positive Review, 0.125 Points for each of the next four Positive Reviews, 0.05 Points for the next five Positive Reviews, and finally 0.025 Points for the next ten Positive Reviews. (1st = 3.000, 2nd = 0.125, 3rd = 0.125, 4th = 0.125, 5th = 0.125, 6th = 0.050, 7th = 0.050, 8th = 0.050, 9th = 0.050, 10th = 0.050, 11th = 0.025, 12th = 0.025, 13th = 0.025, 14th = 0.025, 15th = 0.025, 16th = 0.025, 17th = 0.025, 18th = 0.025, 19th = 0.025, 20th = 0.025) 3 + 0.125 + 0.125 + 0.125 + 0.125 + 0.05 + 0.05 + 0.05 + 0.05 + 0.05 + 0.025 + 0.025 + 0.025 + 0.025 + 0.025 + 0.025 + 0.025 + 0.025 + 0.025 + 0.025 = 4
    2. 1 point is available for the number of Positive Reviews reaching 20% of the registered maximum number of service users in the last 24 months. If this number is partially reached, then that proportion of 1 point is given. eg a Care Home registered for a maximum of 50 service users has to reach 10 Positive Reviews to receive 1 point, if it has 7 reviews it will receive 0.7 points. 20% of the 85 registered maximum number of service users is 17, which has been reached with 26 Positive reviews. Points = 1
  3. When a Review is submitted by someone who has previously submitted a Review, only the latest Review will count towards the Review Score.
  4. If a Care Home does not have a review in the last 24 months, then it will not have a Review Score.
