My beloved mother was a resident in Petherwin for over two years.
She suffered from mixed dementia and had been through the mill until she arrived at Kernow House.
In her time there she was settled and happy.
She got to know the staff as family, she felt safe and trusted them to care for her.
My
Mum passed away with such compassion love and care from all the team that she passed comfortably and peacefully.
I stayed with her for four days leading to her passing staying overnight.
The staff looked after me as well as my mum and I will forever be in their debt.
I cannot speak highly enough of the whole team and would highly recommend to anyone who is in the position of finding care for their loved ones.

My wife has been in care at Barchester Kernow House Care Home for almost five years and is now nearing her 92nd birthday. I visit her every day and know how well she's looked after by the lovely nurses and carers. I love her so much still after 64 years of marriage. The staff and I are so aware of the
care needed for her well-being. If you or your loved ones are offered a residency at Barchester Kernow House Care Home grab it with both hands. Believe me, you will not regret it.

First-time visit, as my father had been placed at this home a couple of days before.
On first impressions it seems to be lovely, the staff were all very nice, professional and very helpful.
My father's room is wonderful, light and spacious with an en-suite shower room/toilet.
The unit is spotlessly
clean and decorated to look more like a private home rather than a nursing home.

The manager has an open-door policy which is good to sort out any problems you may have. The home is very clean and my son's bedroom is the same. He is well cared for and this is a comfort to me because I am 84 and I know when I am no longer around my son will be okay. My son has korsakoff not quite
the same as dementia-I would like him to go out of the unit more which is something he likes. Like all care homes, I would like regular care staff so my son can remember them, but I know the home is doing the best it can! Now the nursing staff in Kernow is good, I can talk to them about my son.

This is the first time I have visited my aunt here. Her room was large with a nice window to see the garden, and an en-suite with various bits of equipment to aid her handling. Her room was clean and tidy. She was in the lounge sitting in her own wheelchair, it looked so expensive and comfortable. My
aunt was in good spirits although she was poorly with a temperature. All care is given to aid the situation, thank you so much for her care.

My mum has been unwell but the way the nursing staff handled both my mum and myself was outstanding. They kept me constantly informed and completely put my mind at rest as to how she was being looked after and treated. They also have listened in the past to the sort of care I wish my mum to receive,
they constantly ask if they can do anything to improve her care but as far as I am concerned she is 100% in the right place, with the right people, the best possible care receiving.

My lovely dad chose to go into a nursing home following a terminal diagnosis as he wanted our final weeks with him to be as his family rather than as his carers. We chose Kernow House because of its clinical reputation but in reality our abiding memory was of the warmth of the care. Sadly my dad died
only 10 days after moving into Kernow Care. But during his short time there, the staff took the time to get to know him as a person, and his likes and dislikes. They treated him with dignity, kindness and absolute warmth. Nothing was too much trouble - the staff were both responsive and proactive. They also took the time to get to know us, and his family, and quietly supported us through a traumatic time. In his last few hours, during the time it took us to drive to Kernow House, one of the team sat by his bedside, holding his hand, showing him the photo of us, his family, making sure he was never alone. We miss him so much but we are so glad that we chose Kernow House. Thank you.

Our experience has been excellent since we have been visiting. All the staff have been really kind and caring. Nothing has been too much trouble. You keep us informed if there are any changes. It gives us peace of mind knowing that our family member is relaxed and well cared for.

My wife has been a full-time resident of Kernow House Care Home since February 2014. Recently I received a phone call to advise me that she was running a high temperature and the head nurse had asked the GP for an urgent prescription for an antibiotic, but they would call me if there was a further problem.
At 5 a.m. the following morning I received a call from the night shift staff to say they had called the urgent response team because there had been a delay on the prescription and they were seeking support. I drove to Kernow House Care Home and sat by my wife while the team looked after her. The head nurse arrived and took control of the situation and demonstrated a detailed knowledge of my wife and her behaviour which showed me how carefully she has been observing all the residents in her care. I was deeply impressed by the professional behaviour and empathy the staff team demonstrated to both my wife and myself.

Always responsive with any queries and regular meetings for relatives who can participate, ask questions and get a real-time account of how the home is doing.
My uncle is cared for in a spotlessly clean environment which is warm and welcoming. He has a key worker who goes above and beyond to care for
him and all staff on the ward support him in a friendly and caring way.
He thoroughly enjoys getting to choose steak and chips, personally cooked by the chef as a birthday treat!

The care my father has had at Barchester Kernow House Care Home has been very good, the staff are kind and caring towards both dad and our family.
The staff treat dad with both care and dignity which we feel is vital when dealing with Dementia. We cannot fault the care he has been given.

My wfe and I had been private carers for our neighbour for 4 years entrusted with LPA. At almost 103 we could no longer give her the attention she deserved.
Finding the right home is daunting, however from the 1st of several telephone discussions and emails we felt very comfortable with our choice
of Kernow House.
The day came for our 1st visit and our feelings about making such an important decision were vindicated.
Our lady, like everyone, is treated with dignity, kindness, and love.
Our subsequent visit has confirmed we have made the right choice.
The whole of the staff are very easy to deal with and nothing is too much trouble.
The whole process from 1st contact to date is seamless.
Finally, we asked ourselves “Is this the sort of place we would like to live if that time ever came” The answer was a resounding yes!

I feel Barchester Kernow House Care Home is caring, friendly and they have my husband's needs just right. It feels homely and not institutionalised, very relaxed, they can not do enough for me and my family when visiting. I have no worries and know he is safe and truly cared for. It's hard for me to
let go and visit nearly everyday. Still getting used to losing the husband and friend I had six months ago.

My sister lives on Millaton Unit and has complex and challenging needs. She is cared for by excellent, compassionate, kind and professional staff who are well versed in her care needs. Although the past few weeks have been exceptionally hard for the staff they have done a wonderful job in doing all they can to keep residents safe. I am an essential caregiver for my husband and so thankfully can still visit him. I can tell he is very fond of the staff and it shows that in the way they
care for him it is likewise.
Christmas was still celebrated and the home looked lovely. Every care was taken so everything carried on the same.

It's difficult for me to express opinions in detail as I was unable to enter the building because of Covid restrictions. My views are based on conversations with the nurses and carers at Kernow House and what my husband has said during the time he was there (9months) and since he has returned home.

I was delighted to see how well cared for my cousin is. She has made some progress since moving here and it is good to see her walking again. She seems really happy. Her room is beautiful and kept really clean. She is cared for by lovely staff who really know her. Everyone we met on our visit went out

My brother moved to Kernow House on May 30th just over 4 years ago until he passed away on 30th July 2021. I regularly received letters and phone calls telling me all the things he had been doing with activities, storytelling, pop up cafe, methodist service, bingo. Before covid enjoying minibus trips,
all his personal needs were taken care of with kindness and dignity. Hair cuts, nails, feet teeth and glasses. What a wonderful choice of meals he told me about he really enjoyed the food there. He had really enjoyed his years abt Kernow House and could not have wished for anything better. The staff were all kind people.

Arriving for the first time to visit my dad, I was nervous about what I would find after a previous horrendous so-called care home nearly killed him. I was greeted by happy, friendly and informative staff who all appeared to know exactly what dad liked/disliked. Dad was wonderful and much improved.
He looked well and could converse for the first time in months. This in my view, is all down to the TLC shown by the wonderful staff.

Every member of staff was welcoming and had time to talk if any questions arose. The home was clean, tidy and smelt fresh. Residents all seem content, very well supervised and cared for. Loved the 'in-house' cat! The staff made visiting a real pleasure.

Leigh

Leigh Stanley

Welcome to Kernow House, my name is Leigh and I am the General Manager at the home.


I am a registered mental health nurse. Prior to becoming a nurse, I spent 13 years as a soldier in the British Army, serving in Iraq, Afghanistan and other overseas operations. I became interested in post-traumatic stress disorder and decided to train as a nurse. During this nurse training, I discovered a particular interest in working with dementia and decided to pursue a career in this.


As a Manager, I put my leadership skills to good use when managing the home. I ensure we deliver person-centred care in a therapeutic manner and share my knowledge with other staff, both within the home and with outside professionals.


I acknowledge that whilst residents are at the forefront of our home, it is important that staff are supported, so the care we deliver as a whole home is filled with passion and enthusiasm.

Sarah

Sarah Sharland

Job Title: Deputy Manager Joined: 2010

Sarah is an occupational therapist who has worked at Kernow House in that role for many years whilst supporting the management team. She supports a holistic approach to caring for residents at Kernow House, where a good quality of life filled with meaningful activities is important. Sarah works actively to encourage residents' independence.

Jo

Jo Balcombe

Job Title: Clinical lead Joined: 2017

Jo is a clinical lead on Millaton where she leads a team of nurses and carers. Jo is a general nurse as well as a mental health nurse. She has many years experience and a wide range of knowledge from her background working mainly in the community.

Ema

Ema Velniciuc

Job Title: Clinical Lead Joined: 2005

Ema is a general nurse and has worked at Kernow House for many years. While Ema has a lot of experience in general nursing, she also holds a master’s degree in psychology and has insight and understanding of, what it is like to live with mental health conditions. Ema leads a team of nurses and carers, who work with dedication and compassion to support residents and their families on St Pirans.

Rose

Rose Chapman

Job Title: Clinical Lead Joined: 2022

Rose is a Registered General Nurse working as a clinical lead at Petherwin. Rose has many years of experience caring for people living with dementia in care homes. The experience gained, means Rose has great empathy and works determinedly to make a difference for residents, so they can live the best possible life.

Richard

Richard Evans

Job Title: Resident Ambassador Joined: 2023

Richard represents residents at Kernow House. Richard says, he likes to make sure residents have enough to eat and drink and that everyone is well cared for. He takes part in resident meetings and talks to anyone who has any concerns. If anyone has anything they would like to talk to Richard about, he can be found quite easily and is always willing to listen and take any issues forward.

Jackie

Jackie Easton-Evans

Job Title: Occupational therapist Joined: 2022

Jackie supports residents to take part in meaningful occupations and enjoyable life activities.


She supports residents to maintain independence by accessing, adapting and providing suitable equipment and is proactive in her support of the life enrichment approach to caring for those who live at Kernow House.

Emma

Emma Duwell

Job Title: Administrator Joined: 2019

Emma is the administrator. She deals with enquiries, HR, invoicing, payroll, banking and logistics. Emma's door is always open for anyone who needs advice or support with anything concerning administration.

Bea

Bea Porup

Job Title: Activities coordinator Joined: 2009

Bea works in a small team with residents, relatives, all staff groups and the wider community. She ensures there is a vibrant environment with a varied weekly activity programme and organises celebrations of themed events. There is always something going on at Kernow House.

Rachel

Rachel Bateman

Job Title: Head Chef Joined: 2022

Rachel is our head chef and leads a team of chefs and kitchen assistants. She has lots of experience from her previous work cooking in cafes, restaurants, pubs and care homes. Rachel is very passionate about providing good home cooking and particularly enjoys baking. She has completed many training courses to learn a variety of catering skills and is able to provide nutritious meals for all dietary requirements.

Timothy

Timothy Willoughby

Job Title: Head of Maintenance Joined: 2024

Tim is head of maintenance at Kernow House. He has a good all-round knowledge of maintenance and DIY.


He likes to keep everything safe and fixed in a timely manner and he does this by working closely with colleagues and outside contractors.

Tracy

Tracy Cockwill

Job Title: Head of Housekeeping Joined: 2006

Tracy has worked at Kernow House for many years and she knows the home well. Tracy leads a team of housekeepers and laundry assistants and together, they ensure the home is clean and the laundry is washed and delivered to residents and the kitchens. Tracy is friendly and always includes residents in doing daily living tasks if they want to be involved and she is always ready with a friendly chat.
