My husband was diagnosed with multiple dementia three years ago and has spent the last 18-months in St Prian unit in Barchester House. He was welcomed with open arms and friendly faces. He settled into his new surrounding very quickly, which was such a joy and a load off my mind. Although his room is
small, it is adequate. Up until March lockdown, I visited four or five times a week, it was wonderful. He was happy, kept clean, fed, watered and entertained. I was delighted with his progress. Then no visits or activities, he became withdrawn and lonely. Garden visits were introduced in July, but he didn't respond well - I didn't visit him for 8-months. He was refusing medication, food and drinking and became very weak. The doctors gave him end of life priveledges. I started to visit almost daily (it is an 80-mile round trip) and he now recognises me and his food and fluid intake has improved considerably. Thank you, Barchester staff, at all level for all you do for my precious husband.
Reply from Amanda Chichester, General Manager at Barchester Kernow House Care HomeMany thanks for a lovely review, Judith. We are privileged to care for your husband on your behalf. We look forward to seeing you soon.

I would like to highly recommend Kernow House especially the St Perrin Ward and all the staff. My father was a resident for 4 yrs and the care he received was exceptional he had vascular dementia and received one to One care. My mother and I visited regularly and felt so grateful he was being taken
such great care of it gave us peace of mind. The staff went the extra mile and I would like to thank them especially four carers, in particular, there are many others who interacted with my father and we are most grateful. We live in Torquay so it wasn’t a quick trip 2/3 times a week but it was well worth the travel to have such amazing care for my amazing father. Sadly my father has passed and during the difficult final days, the staff were incredible. We will be forever grateful.
Reply from Amanda Chichester, General Manager at Barchester Kernow House Care HomeThank you so much for your kind words. It was a pleasure and a privilege to care for your father here at Kernow House. Myself and the team are so grateful that you took the time to give such wonderful feedback during this difficult time.

I became a resident at this home on 30th May 2017. All the staff have been most friendly and helpful. They listen and help with anything they can.

The food served up is delicious and of such a high standard. The menu is carefully selected. I've thanked cooks for the excellence of their food.

It's

a pleasure to be showered with help.

It's what a real home should be for us old folks. Simply great!

I myself am 83, with poor legs due to cellulitis.

Review from Gillian S (Friend of Resident) published on 6 July 2017 Submitted via Postal Card • Report
Overall Experience 4.0 out of 5
Prior to June 1st staffing levels were very good, particularly the hostess role in the kitchen, serving meals and helping residents to eat and drink.
However that role has been discontinued, as have a few carer roles and the difference is quite noticeable, standards have fallen although the staff
do their best.
Reply from Careen Harris, General Manager at Barchester Kernow House Care HomeThank you for your review.

Following a review of the host and other roles, it was decided to discontinue the host for the following reasons: Many of our residents require support with eating and drinking to ensure the experience is both pleasurable and safe for them. The role of host was found to divorce the nutritional aspect of care delivery from the holistic clinical overview. In addition, our internal quality audits indicated that residents enjoyed meal times more in units where hosts were not deployed.

Staffing levels are flexed to meet the needs of the individuals we care for and the numbers of individuals we are caring for. This dynamic situation demands a flexible response and illustrates that needs are kept constantly under review. It is very unlikely, given the nature of what we do, that staffing levels/numbers would remain static.

I am sorry that you feel standards have dropped, however, please be reassured that our governance processes indicate there has been no significant weight loss recorded, or indeed other clinical indicators that would cause alarm.

We constantly review what we do and how we do it in order to achieve the best possible outcomes for the people who live with us, this has meant some roles have gone and new ones created.

As with all change, it can be uncomfortable at first as we transition into new, more effective ways of working.

Current Review Score: 9.9 (9.862)

Overview of Review Score

The Review Score of 9.9 (9.862) out of 10 for Barchester Kernow House Care Home is based on a) the Average Rating and b) the number of positive Reviews.

  1. The Average Rating is 4.9 out of 5 from 27 Reviews in the last 24 months.
  2. The score for the number of positive Reviews is 5.0 out of 5 from 26 positive Reviews in the last 24 months.

Detailed Breakdown of Review Score

The maximum Review Score for a Care Home is 10, which is made up from the Average Rating of Reviews (maximum of 5 points) and the Number of Reviews (maximum of 5 points) in the last 24 months:

  1. 5 Points are available for the Average Rating from all Reviews in the last 24 months. The Average Rating of 4.862 for Barchester Kernow House Care Home is calculated as follows: ( (276 Excellents x 5) + (27 Goods x 4) + (8 Satisfactorys x 3) ) ÷ 311 Ratings = 4.862
  2. 5 Points are available for the number of Positive Reviews in the last 24 months. A Positive Review is defined as any Review with an 'Overall Experience' of '4' or '5' (out of a max rating '5'). The 5 Points relating to the number of positive Reviews for Barchester Kernow House Care Home is based on 26 positive Reviews in the last 24 months and is calculated as per below:

The 5 points available are broken down as follows:

    1. 4 points are available for the first 20 Positive Reviews in the last 24 months; 3 points for the first Positive Review, 0.125 Points for each of the next four Positive Reviews, 0.05 Points for the next five Positive Reviews, and finally 0.025 Points for the next ten Positive Reviews. (1st = 3.000, 2nd = 0.125, 3rd = 0.125, 4th = 0.125, 5th = 0.125, 6th = 0.050, 7th = 0.050, 8th = 0.050, 9th = 0.050, 10th = 0.050, 11th = 0.025, 12th = 0.025, 13th = 0.025, 14th = 0.025, 15th = 0.025, 16th = 0.025, 17th = 0.025, 18th = 0.025, 19th = 0.025, 20th = 0.025) 3 + 0.125 + 0.125 + 0.125 + 0.125 + 0.05 + 0.05 + 0.05 + 0.05 + 0.05 + 0.025 + 0.025 + 0.025 + 0.025 + 0.025 + 0.025 + 0.025 + 0.025 + 0.025 + 0.025 = 4
    2. 1 point is available for the number of Positive Reviews reaching 20% of the registered maximum number of service users in the last 24 months. If this number is partially reached, then that proportion of 1 point is given. eg a Care Home registered for a maximum of 50 service users has to reach 10 Positive Reviews to receive 1 point, if it has 7 reviews it will receive 0.7 points. 20% of the 85 registered maximum number of service users is 17, which has been reached with 26 Positive reviews. Points = 1
  3. When a Review is submitted by someone who has previously submitted a Review, only the latest Review will count towards the Review Score.
  4. If a Care Home does not have a review in the last 24 months, then it will not have a Review Score.
