My mum has been at Ponsandane since March 2023. She had been living alone (at almost 91) and was not in a good place when she was admitted with none of the family expecting to see much improvement. I'm happy to say that she has thrived at Ponsandane and made a spectacular come-back that surprised us
all. I believe this is due to the care and attention she has received and continues to receive, from Day 1. The staff are kind and caring, the facilities are warm and clean. My mum always has clean clothes and we have never noted any personal hygiene issues. The food is (according to mum) very good. The home itself is bright, spacious and cheerful and there is a lovely garden that the most able residents can use during the summer months. There are plenty of activities organised for those who wish to take part, but there is no pressure to do so.

The care home has an open-house policy, which means family can visit at any time & the staff are always friendly and welcoming.

The rooms are on the smaller side, but when several family members are visiting we are able to sit together in the Peacock Lounge, which is a comfortable space and has
a hot drinks machine available.

The home offers a good variety of activities during the week which help keep residents engaged. They also have a minibus and regularly take residents out on trips.

The food is good and the head chef makes a real effort to cater for the needs and preferences of all residents.

One thing that concerns the family is that when my relative asks for morning coffee they do not always receive their drink, despite having sometimes asked 2 or 3 times. There have been a couple of occasions where a family member who's visiting later has had to go make it.

Reply from Alex Davies, Group Marketing Manager at Ponsandane Care HomeThank you for your wonderful feedback, we're so pleased you appreciate our open-house policy, friendly staff, comfortable Peacock Lounge, varied activities, outings and tailored food.

We take your concern about morning coffee very seriously and sincerely apologise that requests have not always been met. I have fed this back to the Home Manager

Mum has had many visits to Ponsandane for respite.
I cannot speak highly enough of all the staff. When you walk through the door the place feels like a real home from home. Everybody is very friendly and they go out of their way to help you.

The home is spotless and they are constantly cleaning

the place so that it always smells fresh.
The food is good and mum's diet is extremely well catered for.
The nursing care is very kind and professional.
I would not hesitate to recommend Ponsandane to anyone.

My sister in law was a resident for 2 years. A stroke victim who had lost the use of her right side and confined to a wheelchair. To add to that she had aphasia so putting a sentence together was impossible for her. The carers at Ponsandane were kind, caring and endlessly patient with her. Her brother
and I are eternally grateful to every member of the team from clinical care, personal care, the cleanliness of the home and the wonderful kitchen staff.

Ponsandane Care Home is a lovely home with a warm and happy atmosphere.
All the staff are kind, caring and considerate and work very hard.
Most of the meals are delicious and sometimes my dad has second helpings.
Some of the residents went out for a trip to Mousehole to see the Christmas lights
which I know my dad enjoyed going out too very much.
The staff let us put up balloons and banners for dads birthday and we had a little family get together which was so lovely to all be part of together.
It feels homely at Ponsandane and can only thank the staff for all they do.

Dad spent his last few weeks of life at Ponsandane.
The staff very excellent. They cared for dad he was always clean and tidy. His room was always clean. The whole of the home was constantly being cleaned and maintained. If there was an issue it was dealt with straight away. Would fully recommend this
care home.

Last year, my beloved, independent mum had a fall which led to hospital admission and then a series of serious, persistent bouts of pneumonia. We were very worried we would lose her but in August we were told she had to leave hospital and we had to find a care home for her. From the start, Hilary and
everyone at Ponsandane were extremely helpful - always polite, kind and understanding. I had never imagined my mum would be able to settle in a care home but within a very short time she was settled and happy - much to all our amazement! She speaks so highly of the staff and every aspect of her care. Her room is lovely, full of all her bits and pieces and always very clean as is my mum, who always looks immaculate tucked up in her comfortable bed.
Mum recently celebrated her 90th birthday and Ponsandane laid on the most wonderful afternoon tea for her, family and friends. The room was beautifully decorated and everything had been prepared with such care and attention.
Thank you Ponsandane.

My father was a fiercely independent man. However in Sept 2025 he told everyone that remaining in his flat, even with significant support was no longer sustainable. We found a space for him at Ponsandane. The review and assessment process felt seamless. The clinical lead - Beth visited dad and confirming
that they could cater for his needs. The administration progressed well despite much of it being done at a significant distance. There are a few hurdles to address all of which was sorted out quite easily. Hilary was very efficient. When dad arrived into the home he was ushered into the dining room for a good meal. This allowed time for my wife to set up his room with his property so that he would feel at home. Once in the home he was very supported by Hilary and Beth. ALL the staff were active is supporting him. He was very happy well cared for and accepting of the help he was offered. He took part in the events run in the home. His last days were happy, safe, calm and relaxed.

Our family have been so impressed with the care our father has received in Ponsandane. They have open visiting, the food is good and plentiful, and there is a cafe area where you can have a hot drink with your loved one. The communication and care are outstanding. The activities coordinator has gone
out of her way to help him settle in and involve him in activities. They have taken him to the pub. He is a smoker, and this is facilitated by allowing him outside to smoke. The building is a bit shabby (currently being done up) and we wish our Dad had a room large enough to allow us to sit down when visiting him (on the waiting list for a bigger room), but those are small and unimportant things compared to the brilliant care. Proof of that is how much better physically he is now he is there, compared to how unwell he was at home and in hospital. He had multiple physical issues and they have improved every one. We all think that if ever we need care, we would be very happy in Ponsandan

Ponsandane house is a well kept home it's always looks clean and tidy as you enter. however the security could be better I could go anywhere in the building and not get stopped.
The staff are friendly but could wear name badges.
Residents are sometimes left in the lounge area with no staff checking
them as I've had to help Residents.
When doing personal care signs are on doors but sometimes not used
I've had to ask for different options on food.
The staff could be more attentive but would help if you needed it. it's just other things that need looking at.

My mum was admitted for emergency respite due to my dad breaking his hip. We had previously been to sort out upcoming care for pre planned operation.

It was a home from home setting with the friendliest approachable staff in every role. So much care given!

Oh my god, can't recommend Ponsandane enough. From beginning to end the care and treatment we received as a whole family no words can explain. If anyone is looking for a home for their loved ones then look no further than Ponsandane as everyone is amazing. The rooms are homely the food is brilliant
and the staff are amazing nothing was never too much trouble and always smiling and welcoming. Mum felt safe and happy which took a lot of stress off our shoulders during a traumatic time.

Delighted with the way my brother is treated. He seems happy/contented and is always treated with respect. Visiting only very infrequently due to the distance from our house to the care home. I can't answer all the questions. But what I have seen has been exemplary.

Ponsandane has an excellent atmosphere, a great nursing environment and positive and capable staff. We would highly recommend this to anyone needing nursing care in West Cornwall.

My 102 year old dad was admitted to Ponsandane care home in March 2025 following a short hospital stay after breaking

his hip in a fall. The hospital consultant recommended a nursing home as he decided not to get out of bed and did not want to recover.

First impressions were good, the home well managed and spotlessly clean. The transfer from hospital was seamless and undertaken with professional confidence and kindness.

Dad deteriorated in the first week. Nursing staff ensured that he was examined medically by a GP doctor who determined that end of life, palliative care was needed. All was managed in a sensitive and pragmatic way that enabled him to achieve the good death that he wanted. He was excellently cared for throughout his three week stay.

Thanks to all the staff at Ponsandane.

The success of a care home rests largely with the care staff and here the team is generally excellent.
It's an old building with its own challenges, but advantages too.
Having once been a grand hotel the public rooms are high and light, with wide circulation spaces. The bedrooms in the old part share
these advantages. The bathrooms don't reflect the price point - these are tired and need attention.
The open door policy, with any time visiting, is most welcome.
The only area of disappointment is the food. Residents should be offered a choice of excellent meals prepared on site. Mum's only consistent complaint is about mediocre meals that are not delivered hot. I have joined her for three meals, none of which I'd be happy paying for.
In summary: Excellent - staff, space. Needs work - Bathrooms, food.

Overview of Review Score

The Review Score of 9.7 (9.682) out of 10 for Ponsandane Care Home is based on a) the Average Rating and b) the number of positive Reviews.

  1. The Average Rating is 4.7 out of 5 from 31 Reviews in the last 24 months.
  2. The score for the number of positive Reviews is 5.0 out of 5 from 31 positive Reviews in the last 24 months.

Detailed Breakdown of Review Score

The maximum Review Score for a Care Home is 10, which is made up from the Average Rating of Reviews (maximum of 5 points) and the Number of Reviews (maximum of 5 points) in the last 24 months:

  1. 5 Points are available for the Average Rating from all Reviews in the last 24 months. The Average Rating of 4.682 for Ponsandane Care Home is calculated as follows: ( (252 Excellents x 5) + (81 Goods x 4) + (10 Satisfactorys x 3) + (3 Poors x 2) ) ÷ 346 Ratings = 4.682
  2. 5 Points are available for the number of Positive Reviews in the last 24 months. A Positive Review is defined as any Review with an 'Overall Experience' of '4' or '5' (out of a max rating '5'). The 5 Points relating to the number of positive Reviews for Ponsandane Care Home is based on 31 positive Reviews in the last 24 months and is calculated as per below:

The 5 points available are broken down as follows:

    1. 4 points are available for the first 20 Positive Reviews in the last 24 months; 3 points for the first Positive Review, 0.125 Points for each of the next four Positive Reviews, 0.05 Points for the next five Positive Reviews, and finally 0.025 Points for the next ten Positive Reviews. (1st = 3.000, 2nd = 0.125, 3rd = 0.125, 4th = 0.125, 5th = 0.125, 6th = 0.050, 7th = 0.050, 8th = 0.050, 9th = 0.050, 10th = 0.050, 11th = 0.025, 12th = 0.025, 13th = 0.025, 14th = 0.025, 15th = 0.025, 16th = 0.025, 17th = 0.025, 18th = 0.025, 19th = 0.025, 20th = 0.025) 3 + 0.125 + 0.125 + 0.125 + 0.125 + 0.05 + 0.05 + 0.05 + 0.05 + 0.05 + 0.025 + 0.025 + 0.025 + 0.025 + 0.025 + 0.025 + 0.025 + 0.025 + 0.025 + 0.025 = 4
    2. 1 point is available for the number of Positive Reviews reaching 20% of the registered maximum number of service users in the last 24 months.
