Sadly, my father had a very unhappy respite stay at Frethey House, and, whilst this was certainly partly due to his state of health at the time, there were several issues and concerns which I raised with the company subsequently. In spite of assurances to the contrary, I have not received a reply (other
than acknowledgment of receipt) to my emails. It is disappointing, to say the least, and does not reflect well on the company's mission statement or their alleged ethos of care.

The home has a friendly and relaxed atmosphere and the staff are always welcoming and greet me with a smile. At Christmas time we were invited to join in and given a three-course meal and a glass of wine. Because the resident was unable to get up - a table was laid up in her room, complete with Christmas
crackers.

Very pleased with all-round care received for mum who has been there 10 weeks. This included Christmas when the staff made the special effort of setting up a festive dining table for us relatives in her room (as she was bed-ridden) so that we could share a Christmas meal. A lovely surprise and very
good meal with service. Staff always polite and welcoming whatever the time of day. They speedily action any requests. Accommodation light and airy and super lounge/activity room.

My father has been a resident in this care home for several months. I could not recommend Frethey House and would strongly suggest that you read the recent CQC Report in advance of any visit. Frethey House has such an appalling CQC Report ("Requires Improvement" in all key areas) for a reason and, from
here, you can make your own mind up and make the most appropriate choice of Care Home. Thereafter! In their favour, I cannot be derogatory about most of the staff on the 'shop floor' as most work their socks off to aid the residents and that is its only worthwhile bonus and the reason for 'Excellent' below.

Though my mother was only in the home for three weeks she was treated with the utmost respect and given very personal care. It seemed that nothing would be too much trouble, even when I took her on a wheelchair tour of the grounds. She was always treated as a person right to the end. I also appreciated
the hospitality and cheerful staff on my visits and I liked the open all hours atmosphere, especially towards the end when I stayed overnight. The staff showed great support and compassion at the end too. I do not think Mum could have been in a better place for her last weeks.

Good nursing home but needs money spent on painting the rooms. New updated toilets in rooms. For the money my mother pays this needs looking at (£3,000 per month). Food can be a bit up and down at times but very good 90% of times.
Rooms - chipped paint on skirting boards - stains on the carpet, door
frame, wallpaper peeling above the radiator. This has been reported but was told update is going ahead.

My Mum had a short stay at Frethey House before she died. I have to say it was such a lovely home. The staff are full of care and compassion and go that extra mile to make the resident and family welcome. The open hrs to visit are great as I worked shift work. My mum was very happy here. She was well
looked after and always dressed, clean and cared for. I spent ages trying to decide where to send her as she wasn't able to make that decision. If you are in the same position then I can't recommend the home enough. In her last few days and hours, the staff made sure she died with care, love and dignity. A wonderful place in lovely grounds with great staff.

My mother entered Frethey House Care Home mid March after an extended hospital stay.
She and we were immediately felt welcome. In her short stay at the home she was always treated well by the staff. My family were looked after by the staff by chatting, providing refreshments and explaining issues.
My mother was also treated with respect and with courtesy.

After having two strokes and some rehabilitation, my father lived in Frethey House Care Home from the summer of 2016 until May 2017.
I travelled a long distance to visit him at weekends, visiting was a pleasure, Frethey House is conveniently located close to the M5 motorway and Taunton Hospital.
The
buildings and gardens are well maintained, the surrounding countryside is pleasant and parking spaces always available.
The security is good, partly because the care home is located down a country lane, further, there is a pin code used to enter the building.
The management and nursing staff were very friendly, cheerful and patiently guided the family through both major and minor decisions relating to my father's care. I felt that without exception, the staff had my father's best interests at heart.
The nurses managed feeding via a PEG tube, they had this down to a fine art, in order to avoid aspiration of vomit into the lungs, this kept my father out of the hospital for protracted periods.
The staff went out of their way to make me feel welcome during visits.
In summary, I warmly recommend Frethey House Care Home.

My brother was admitted to Frethey House on 31st May 2016 and had to receive complex care due to Dysphagia following a second stroke in hospital. He subsequently had to be fed via a G-peg tube and suffered aspiration pneumonia a number of times as a result. The staff at Frethey House responded rapidly
to these unfortunate episodes and due to their care and diligence enabled my brother to survive for a year. I cannot recommend them enough for the kindness and dignity afforded to him when there was little hope of recovery.

Dad spent the last 9 months of his life in the excellent hands of Frethey House. While he would have preferred to have been at home, he and his family, felt that nursing care was essential and this couldn't have happened at home.
The care, dedication, warmth and professionalism displayed by all staff
at Frethey House was truly outstanding. The two nurses who were most closely involved with dads care surpassed even those high standards. Frethey House was then represented at dad's funeral by two of these staff members, this speaks volumes. We are very, very grateful.

Finding a good nursing home was always going to be a gamble even with CQC information, but I found the perfect place for my dad in Frethey House. He has been there a year now and took a while to settle, as to be expected, but he is as happy as he can be in his situation. The nursing and care staff are
so kind to him and always try to get a smile, even when he's grumpy!
Dad is always nicely shaven and tidy - even his bushy eyebrows are under control! The activities co-ordinator works hard each day to engage the residents and external entertainment comes in frequently. Family visiting always welcome, nutrition excellent. Regular relatives meetings.

My Father was in Frethey House for a few months before he sadly passed away, it is always a difficult time when you can no longer live in your own home, but from day one you could not have asked for a more friendly and supportive place to be.
The staff became more like family, they knew us by name
and when ever you visited anyone you asked knew where he was, they would always find time to spend with dad and have a few jokes. There was always something going on to entertain the residents and even the residents needing more care were involved in everything.
It was more like a hotel and I would have been quite happy to spend a week there myself.

My brother was moved to Frethey House in September 2016. He has vascular dementia final stages, but his care since being there is second to none.
He has continuity of carers and nurses so understands their voices and he has calmed down dramatically. They genuinely are a family care home and it comes
across in their involvement in his care as much as it does when dealing with us, his family. The manager makes us so welcome.
I would certainly recommend Frethey House to anyone looking for wonderful end of life care for their loved one.

Current Review Score: 9.4 (9.418)

Overview of Review Score

The Review Score of 9.4 (9.418) out of 10 for Frethey House is based on a) the Average Rating and b) the number of positive Reviews.

  1. The Average Rating is 4.7 out of 5 from 9 Reviews in the last 24 months.
  2. The score for the number of positive Reviews is 4.7 out of 5 from 9 positive Reviews in the last 24 months.

Detailed Breakdown of Review Score

The maximum Review Score for a Care Home is 10, which is made up from the Average Rating of Reviews (maximum of 5 points) and the Number of Reviews (maximum of 5 points) in the last 24 months:

  1. 5 Points are available for the Average Rating from all Reviews in the last 24 months. The Average Rating of 4.718 for Frethey House is calculated as follows: ( (78 Excellents x 5) + (21 Goods x 4) + (4 Satisfactorys x 3) ) ÷ 103 Ratings = 4.718
  2. 5 Points are available for the number of Positive Reviews in the last 24 months. A Positive Review is defined as any Review with an 'Overall Experience' of '4' or '5' (out of a max rating '5'). The 4.7 Points relating to the number of positive Reviews for Frethey House is based on 9 positive Reviews in the last 24 months and is calculated as per below:

The 5 points available are broken down as follows:

    1. 4 points are available for the first 20 Positive Reviews in the last 24 months; 3 points for the first Positive Review, 0.125 Points for each of the next four Positive Reviews, 0.05 Points for the next five Positive Reviews, and finally 0.025 Points for the next ten Positive Reviews. (1st = 3.000, 2nd = 0.125, 3rd = 0.125, 4th = 0.125, 5th = 0.125, 6th = 0.050, 7th = 0.050, 8th = 0.050, 9th = 0.050, 10th = 0.050, 11th = 0.025, 12th = 0.025, 13th = 0.025, 14th = 0.025, 15th = 0.025, 16th = 0.025, 17th = 0.025, 18th = 0.025, 19th = 0.025, 20th = 0.025) 3 + 0.125 + 0.125 + 0.125 + 0.125 + 0.05 + 0.05 + 0.05 + 0.05 = 3.7
    2. 1 point is available for the number of Positive Reviews reaching 20% of the registered maximum number of service users in the last 24 months. If this number is partially reached, then that proportion of 1 point is given. eg a Care Home registered for a maximum of 50 service users has to reach 10 Positive Reviews to receive 1 point, if it has 7 reviews it will receive 0.7 points. 20% of the 41 registered maximum number of service users is 8.2, which has been reached with 9 Positive reviews. Points = 1
  3. When a Review is submitted by someone who has previously submitted a Review, only the latest Review will count towards the Review Score.
  4. If a Care Home does not have a review in the last 24 months, then it will not have a Review Score.

Job Title: Home Manager

As the Home Manager at Frethey House Nursing and Residential Home in Bishops Hull in Taunton, I believe that our residents should receive the highest quality of care possible.

The team and I endeavour to always maintain this high quality of care, and we also like to make every day memorable for each resident.

Working at Frethey House is a true privilege. We are lucky enough to enjoy stunning views across the Somerset Countryside, views of a beautiful courtyard garden, which is always full in the Summer with our residents. The home has a wonderful, friendly atmosphere, thanks to both the caring team and the cosy surroundings.

I always aim to lead by example, involving myself in the day-to-day life of our community as well as making Frethey House a happy place in which we live and work. It is wonderful to see the smiles on residents' faces every day. I have worked in care since 2009, and I have self-directed my education to degree level, incorporating a degree-level leadership and management qualification in Health and Social Care. This knowledge has highlighted to me key ways in which I can support the team to get the best out of themselves, whatever their role, and I ensure that everyone I work with gets the chance to develop professionally if they so choose.

At Frethey House, we are one big family, and everything we do is from the heart. One of our colleagues is just celebrating 20 years at Frethey House (it was about 30 in total, and she left to have her child). We treat the people living in our community as individuals, understanding their choices, wishes and dreams and making a difference to their lives every day.

It is very important to us that they feel valued and respected, as their experiences and life stories are of value to us all.
