My brother was moved to Frethey House in September 2016. He has vascular dementia final stages, but his care since being there is second to none.
He has continuity of carers and nurses so understands their voices and he has calmed down dramatically. They genuinely are a family care home and it comes across in their involvement in his care as much as it does when dealing with us, his family. The manager makes us so welcome.

I would certainly recommend Frethey House to anyone looking for wonderful end of life care for their loved one.

My brother needed to move from a mental hospital in Somerset to a nursing home as he is suffering from Alzheimer's vascular dementia and is currently at the final stage of this illness. My twin sister and I along with my husband viewed Frethey House Care Home with Nursing in August 2016 after visiting several others and knew straight away we wanted our brother to be there. A warm and friendly welcome by the Care Manager and her staff who portrayed a caring professional approach was to us outstanding and has since been. I am thrilled my brother was given the opportunity of care at this particular home. Our hopes are that our brother will be able to stay there until his final days. A big thank you Frethey House from a grateful family!

Mum was treated with great care and dignity most of the time, the room was light and airy with very little toilet odours.

The activities were very good, the staff were very friendly, the only fault I can find is that they do not employ enough staff, to ensure that they give a quick response to their patients needs.

A very pleasant and clean nursing home. Reception staff are very smiley and friendly. We found the nursing care workers very caring and supportive, nothing was too much trouble for our relative in her rime of need.

A cup of tea was always there if we wanted one on our visits and we enjoyed many of the entertainments with her. It made such a difference to us as a family knowing she was haappy

My wife had Parkinson's and narrowing arteries of the heart. My wife had no balance at all and everything had to be done for her. She was difficult insisting she could stand etc and consequently fall. She was very well looked after, patiently, kindly and efficiently. Encouraged to do things, we were listened to by staff, occasional lapses of communication but put right quickly. It felt right as a place.

Staff were very kind and attentive to mum and to relatives, at a very difficult time. They were open and honest, keeping us abreast of any difficulties mum was having. They were also very accommodating to visiting dogs/families etc. The place is pleasant, light, airy and had a nice atmosphere. Well run and cheerful.

My mother-in-law was cared for during the last weeks of her life at Frethey House. She had a lovely room with a pleasant view. She was treated with the care and kindness at all times. She was never allowed to be in any pain and all her needs were speedingly attended to. There were plenty of staff available and all residents were treated with kindness and respect. I would unhesitatingly recommend Frethey House.

My mum came to Frethey House on a recommendation from a friend, who had had a very positive experience there. She very much felt it was the right choice for her offering her a place of friendliness and safety. She felt she was listened to by the staff regarding any comment she has on her care and acted upon them. My mum always spoke highly of all at Frethey House who came into contact with her and as her family we always felt welcomed and reassured at all times. We are really grateful that she was able to end her days in the care of Frethey House. Thank you.

Overall Experience

We looked at several nursing homes before choosing Frethey. What made Frethey stand out when we visited was the friendly calm but efficient atmosphere. The way the residents were being talked to and the interaction of the staff with the residents. My brother moved into Frethey in June 2014. The staff soon got to know him, his likes and dislikes and above all else his sense of humour. We visited frequently and to hear the laughter coming from his room was brilliant. My brother had Motor Neurone disease which is a progressive, limiting illness that threw up a lot of challenges along the way. I always felt that the staff were very aware of the changes that the illness brought and supported my brother's choices. I always knew that I could talk to the manager and her staff no matter how busy they were. She is a very hands on manager who gives and gains respect from her staff. My brother and my family built up some wonderful relationships with the staff. My brother died in September 2015 and we will be forever grateful to the care team for the support and care they gave to my brother. The staff are what makes Frethey so good.

Meet the Team (1)

Helen Oliver
Helen OliverJob Title:Home Manager

As the Home Manager at Frethey House Nursing and Residential Home in Bishops Hull in Taunton, I believe that our residents should receive the highest quality of care possible.

The team and I endeavour to always maintain this high quality of care, and we also like to make every day memorable for each resident.

Working at Frethey House is a true privilege. We are lucky enough to enjoy stunning views across the Somerset Countryside, views of a beautiful courtyard garden, which is always full in the Summer with our residents. The home has a wonderful, friendly atmosphere, thanks to both the caring team and the cosy surroundings.

I always aim to lead by example, involving myself in the day-to-day life of our community as well as making Frethey House a happy place in which we live and work. It is wonderful to see the smiles on residents' faces every day. I have worked in care since 2009, and I have self-directed my education to degree level, incorporating a degree-level leadership and management qualification in Health and Social Care. This knowledge has highlighted to me key ways in which I can support the team to get the best out of themselves, whatever their role, and I ensure that everyone I work with gets the chance to develop professionally if they so choose.

At Frethey House, we are one big family, and everything we do is from the heart. One of our colleagues is just celebrating 20 years at Frethey House (it was about 30 in total, and she left to have her child). We treat the people living in our community as individuals, understanding their choices, wishes and dreams and making a difference to their lives every day.

It is very important to us that they feel valued and respected, as their experiences and life stories are of value to us all.
