Reviews

9.1 The Orchards has a Review Score of 9.1 (9.141)

The Review Score of 9.1 (maximum of 10) for The Orchards is based on a) the Average Rating and b) the number of positive Reviews.

  • a) The Average Rating is 4.5 out of 5 from 13 Reviews over all time. This Average Rating is also the rating value for The Orchards in Google's Search Results - more info

  • b) The score for the number of positive Reviews is 4.7 out of 5 from 6 positive Reviews in the last 12 months.

  • a) 5 Points are available for the Average Rating of all Reviews over all time. For each review the Care Home / service is rated Excellent, Good, Satisfactory, Poor or Very Poor on a number of areas eg Staff, Management etc. The Care Home receives points for each rating as follows: Excellent = 5. Good = 4. Satisfactory = 3. Poor = 2. Very Poor = 1. These points are added up and then divided by the total number of completed ratings to generate the average rating.

    The Average Rating of 4.474 for The Orchards is calculated as follows: ( (90 Excellents x 5) + (50 Goods x 4) + (11 Satisfactorys x 3) + (3 Poors x 2) ) ÷ 154 Ratings = 4.474

  • b) 5 Points are available for the number of Positive Reviews in the last 12 months. If there are no Positive Reviews in the last 12 months, then 2.5 points are available for the number of Positive Reviews in the last 2 years. A Positive Review is defined as any Review with 'Extremely Likely' or 'Likely' in answer to the question 'How likely are you to recommend this Care Home to friends and family if they needed similar care or treatment?'

The 5 points available are broken down as follows:

    1. 4 points are available for the first 5 Positive Reviews, 3 points for the first Positive Review and then 0.25 Points for each of the next 4 Positive Reviews.

    2. 1 point is available for reaching a target number of Positive Reviews based on 20% of the number of registered maximum number of service users. If the target is partially reached then that proportion of 1 point is given. eg a Care Home with 50 registered maximum number of service users has a target of 10 Positive Reviews, if it has 10 or more Positive Reviews it will receive 1 point, if it has 7 reviews will receive 0.7 points.

    3. If there are no Positive Reviews in the last 12 months, then 2.5 points are available for the number of Positive Reviews in the last 2 years. The calculation is the same as above, except the points are divided by 2.

The 4.667 Points relating to the number of positive Reviews for The Orchards is based on 6 positive Reviews in the last 12 months and is calculated as follows:

    1. 3 + 0.25 + 0.25 + 0.25 + 0.25 = 4

    2. Target of 9 positive Reviews (45 registered maximum number of service users ÷ 5). 6 Reviews ÷ 9 Target = 0.667

  • When a Review is submitted by someone who has previously submitted a Review, only the latest Review will count towards the Review Score.

My Dad had been in this care home for 5 weeks. On arrival, it was noted that his radiator was not working. 5 weeks later it is still not working! With the cold weather fast approaching one would have thought this would be a priority. My Dad has cancer so he feels the cold. The manager did offer more blankets. But surely it can't take 5 weeks to fix a very simple problem! We do wonder what we are paying £1200 a week for? At times he does not get his breakfast until 11 am, he is left in his room when he could be encouraged to attend the functions in the main area.

I wrote the above review in October 2017. The above was fixed shortly after my complaint. Sadly my Dad passed away last week. I would like to thank all the staff at The Orchards for all the help and care they gave him in the last few weeks.

My observations are based on two weeks when my brother who has MS was in for respite care.
He is severely handicapped. During the first week's visit, I asked if he could have a soak in the bath. This was granted the next day. All the staff that my husband and I spoke to were very friendly, caring and professional. The activity schedule was very impressive.

It is a hard decision to decide to place your loved one in a care home. My mother has been at The Orchards for a few months, she has flourished, she is eating more and gaining very much needed weight. The care team are so very, very, kind and unlike the previous home, the manager is out and about on the floor. I have found the process of committing my mother to care so very distressing, but the manager has spent time with me, offering me words of comfort and I feel finally we have the right home for her. The Orchards is a truly beautiful place to be.

The overall staff members at all levels have been kind, considering, caring, understanding of each resident and their family.
Open, honest, respectful and cheery.
Willingness to stop and discuss any issues help where ever they can is impressive to see.
The Orchards is clean, open and friendly. The building and rooms are a comfortable design light and airy windows all face the garden or green outside space of the town. A quiet home for residents to go regularly into town keeping in touch with the outside community is important.

It's a distressing period for all involved when it comes to picking a Care Home for a member of your family as it's usually the last important decision you can take for a relative. Reviews can often play quite an important part in this which is why I want to share our recent experience. It was a last minute thing with my Grandmother having to leave her home and go into full-time care as her condition was changing by the day. From the moment my Mother had the initial tour of The Orchards she was put at ease and felt there was no need to look any further. From the time my Grandmother arrived and throughout the 5 weeks she was there all the staff from the management to the Nurses and Carers provided an excellent level of care, nothing was too much trouble. As a family, it has helped us tremendously knowing that the right decision was made and my Grandmother was in the best possible place and had such caring and dignified end of life care. Thank you all very much.

I am a very close friend to a resident at The Orchards Nursing Home. On the 17th of October, she invited two friends down from Sussex. We were all welcomed by the staff and had lunch with the resident. We were very well looked after by all, and especially by the activities co-ordinator, who looked after us for lunch and was very professional.
We had a lovely meal and nothing was too much trouble. This gave my friend a very big lift, and they felt much better for it, made all the difference. Also a big thank you to the manager and the lady in the office - which is very well run.

My wife is a resident in the home which is first class, clean, welcoming, caring staff, good food, activities for the residents and entertainment. There are one or two shortcomings i.e. packets of biscuits given to the residents are not opened and it is difficult for an elderly person to open these packets. Resident's requirements are not always adhered to i.e. my wife hates anything cold like ice cream, cold drinks etc, but is still offered these, obviously lack of communication.

Keren Wilkinson, Director of Operations at The Orchards responded to this review on 03 Nov 2016:

Thank you for your feedback Mr Spencer, we chose to offer individually wrapped biscuits to ensure that there is no risk of cross infection but understand the frustration for your wife who finds them difficult to open; we will certainly address this with her individually along with her being offered cold things that she does not like; please accept my apologies for any distress caused to you and your wife.

I found the care home where my aunt resides is a nice home, just a couple of things I noticed when I came and visited my aunt yesterday.
1) One button the lift console was missing.
2) Lack of cups/beakers in visitors lounges for people to have tea of coffee.

Keren Wilkinson, Director of Operations at The Orchards responded to this review on 10 Apr 2016:

Thank you for the time you have taken to provide us with feedback. I hope that you felt able to inform the person in charge on the day you visited your aunt of the concerns that you have mentioned, I will certainly follow this up. I would be very grateful if you would contact the Home Manager to discuss the issues you have with the care and support as you have rated this as poor. We are always looking to improve our service and therefore would like to understand what the issues were. Many thanks

My mother, who has Alzheimer's, has been living in The Orchards for over a Year. I can't recommend it highly enough. The staff are so loving, kind and professional, nothing is ever too much trouble for them and they always smile.
There are meal choices every day, breakfast in bed, a sunny dining room and tea in the lounge. Residents and visitors can make tea or coffee at any time.
The en-suite rooms are clean, comfortable and personalised. Regular appointments with the hairdresser and chiropodist are excellent and the local vicar makes regular visits, even giving communion.
The home is situated in a quiet, residential area 10 easy minutes walk from Crewkerne town centre. Regular meetings for residents and their families keep communications open and ideas flowing. A special tea for residents with dementia, in summer in the lovely little garden, is a huge plus.
Placing my mother at The Orchards was such a good decision. She is happy and I am happy too.

My observations are now based upon the continued care, kindness and medical attention shown to my wife over two years and nine months tell me that The Orchards is very good. I have alternated my selections of the "options" concerned that to put excellent for them all might look like exaggeration. My wife is settled, comfortable and well nourished. I happily dine with her there frequently. The nursing is excellent and there is no hesitation when necessary to visit or call in the GP. I am always kept fully informed of any medical situation. The GP response in Crewkerne is excellent too. "Gold standard indeed."
