My mother moved to Amesbury Abbey following a fall and hip break and resulting in weight loss. She had tried another care home and it had been awful so we had pretty low expectations, though high hopes that Amesbury would be different. The manager shone during the whole intake process, her nursing background
providing fabulous advice for our mother whilst she was in hospital. Best of all, she put me under no pressure to decide or rush into a decision, setting her apart from other care homes.
I had then been worried that perhaps the manager was brilliant, but the service afterwards wouldn't match it, I am so relieved that everyone I have dealt with since has absolutely matched the ethos the manager showed. When I changed our plans for Christmas and asked on Christmas Eve if we could manage to get our mother to us for the holiday, everyone moved mountains to help us. There seems to be a "can-do" attitude at Amesbury.
Above all else though, Mummy is happy and that's what really matters.

Amesbury Abbey is a wonderful place for my mother. The staff are very kind. Many are army wives or ex-army. The setting is beautiful both inside and on the grounds. It is a lovely place to go for walks. The care is first rate and there are plenty of activities. My mother has made many friends. The Abbey
gave my mother a lovely birthday party. I recommend it very highly. The management are very good at communicating with families. I am allowed to come and go with my dog, which is a great boost for my dog-loving mother.

At Amesbury, my mother is so well looked after and the team is amazing.
I have been visiting my mother for over 4 years now and have always found the care excellent. The staff are always happy to chat about my mother and I know she's in very good hands at Amesbury.

Our experience was all positive. The setting, building and food are lovely. The staff treated my mother with respect and kindness at all times. This meant I never worried about my mother's care. She made friends with the staff and was always content and comfortable.

My Mummy died on the 20/08/24 at the Abbey. The experience of professionalism mixed with care and support was second to none. We were welcomed as a family into another "family". The care provided to my Mother was exceptional and we couldn't have found a better place for Mummy to spend her last days.
The
manager and staff were very committed to providing the best they could. Words cannot adequately describe our thanks.

Our Mum had had an artificial eye for 65 years and when she went to an eye clinic the gross negligence of the clinician nearly resulted in her good eye being removed. It was only due to the necessary intervention of the senior carer that a tragedy was averted and she could still see the world around
her and watch her family grow up.
We cannot thank the Senior Carer enough for her courage and compassion in what must have been a very distressing incident.

My mother has had wonderful care for the past five years at Amesbury Abbey and continues to receive this standard of care. The staff are patient and caring, especially in trying circumstances. I know my mother is being well cared for which has given me a huge sense of relief. She has the opportunity
to enjoy the wonderful grounds which encourage the resident's to take exercise and in which they also socialise. I am kept informed and I am able to visit my mother frequently and I am also included in some of the celebratory occasions. Amesbury Abbey has the feel of a family home, what more could one ask?

This home is set in the most beautiful environment in the countryside with the river Avon running through the grounds. Every effort is made to keep the residents entertained and outings are organised to give them a change of scene. The staff all seem very friendly and keen to please and call bells are
answered very promptly. The rooms are well decorated and residents can have their own furniture and pictures on the wall if they wish. The residents all seem very happy.

My father moved to Amesbury Abbey Care Home a year ago and has settled in very well thanks to the warmth and professionalism of all the people at Amesbury - the carers, nurses, managers, cooks, cleaners and maintenance staff who look after the residents so well and who keep the home running smoothly.
My father has limited mobility and needs help with daily tasks: the staff are always at hand to help him discreetly, while still allowing him privacy and a degree of independence if he prefers. He genuinely enjoys their company and often tells me how lucky he is to be in such good hands. All the staff are so friendly, helpful and welcoming, both to residents and to family or visitors. The carers and nursing staff keep in regular contact with me about any medical issues or problems so I remain fully informed. My father has a lovely, bright room with big windows and a balcony looking over Amesbury Abbey's beautiful grounds and seems very much at home.

Huge Congratulations to Amesbury Abbey for being rated as one of the Top 20 Care Homes in the UK 2023. What an amazing feat and so well deserved. Our dad has been living in the Abbey for the past eighteen months and at 98 years old has made a wonderful life for himself, made possible by the engaged,
attentive and caring staff. He has found new friends and wonderful people to share his stories with. The Abbey encourages the residents to be sociable, to engage with each other and to celebrate all the events important to them. He has a lovely room, overlooking the beautifully cared for grounds, and enjoys a freedom he is accustomed to in his life. As a family, we know he is safe and being looked after, his needs are met and importantly he is treated with dignity. Dad is enjoying a wonderful quality of life. Thank you to everyone at the Abbey who makes Dad's day a joy.

My husband moved to Amesbury Abbey Nursing Home from another home when it closed. He has settled happily and enjoys the company of his fellow patients. The staff are all excellent, helpful, patient, gentle and kind. The nursing staff are particularly good and keep in touch with me over my husband's
health. They never hesitate to consult the doctor if necessary, this is reassuring. The activities are good and my husband enjoys them. Special effort is made for special occasions which are greatly enjoyed and appreciated. (Some by patients' families too!) He enjoys the food and is full of praise for the kitchen team. The grounds are lovely, and my husband enjoys being taken for a regular walk when possible. Amesbury Abbey has an excellent reputation and is very well known. I can not imagine anywhere else for my husband where he would receive better care or be more contented. Maybe I will go there myself one day if I need care, and I would count myself fortunate!

We have known about Amesbury Abbey and the service that it provides for over 20 years as we are residents of Amesbury. With that in mind, we had no hesitation whatsoever when approached by a family friend seeking residential care in the area to recommend the Abbey. Our friend has been a resident there
for the last 27 months and despite arriving during Covid times and all the restrictions that entailed has received great care and attention. We have always been allowed visits whether by window, distanced outdoors to eventually being able to go indoors and then go on excursion for appointments, coffee and shopping. We feel that the Abbey staff have always been helpful and understanding to try and meet all our friend's needs and to keep her safe in their care. There is no area of care that we can fault and we would like to think that the Abbey will still be in business when we need care in the future.

My 103-year-old father is hugely happy at Amesbury Abbey and has been resident there for a year and a half. Until recently, he has been able to push his walker up to the River Avon, which runs through the Abbey's magnificent grounds, and sit there enjoying the view. Now he is less mobile but the Abbey
staff are always to hand to wheel him to lunch (an important part of his daily social programme) or to other activities, such as the weekly exercise sessions, sherry mornings, outings to nearby places of interest, special dinners, Christmas carols and film events. The staff are very charming and nothing is too much trouble for them. As a regular visitor to his room, I am usually offered a cup of tea. The premises are magnificent, and my father has a wonderful country view from his room. He feels like the laird of a big estate! It is hard to find anything to criticise as he is being so well looked after, but the lift to his floor occasionally breaks down which is an inconvenience.

The end-of-life care provided by Amesbury Abbey was exemplary. The nursing staff and GP initiated a conversation with my mother about her wishes and then spoke to me to confirm what had been discussed and agreed. I felt the staff listened carefully to our wishes and made time to support me as well as
my mother as she approached the end of her life. I felt my mother was calm and comfortable in the last day or so of her life and am very grateful to all the staff for the care they showed both of us.

My parents both went to Amesbury Abbey in April 2020, right at the beginning of COVID. Unfortunately, my father died in November 2021, so he and my mother spent over a year and a half in the Abbey. In that time, I can genuinely say the level of care provided by the staff was perfect. My father always
had good things to say about all the staff, including the day-to-day carers, nursing staff, cleaners, and even the maintenance man. There really did seem to be a connection between the staff and my parents, that seemed so genuine. My mother has had to move on because this home does not specialise in the level of dementia care she requires, but she also seemed very happy whilst my father was alive. In some ways, I wish my father had come to the home earlier, so he could have enjoyed the activities/outings a bit more. The home is located in beautiful grounds, the food I saw looked and tasted lovely. I would recommend Amesbury Abbey to anyone.

I was staying at Amesbury Abbey for a two-week respite period following a hip replacement op, so my observations will therefore cover a limited amount of time. Set in the most beautiful location. Given a warm welcome. Room with en-suite bathroom, well furnished, facing South, and overlooking beautiful
grounds. Nursing care was excellent, each time medication was given, was told what it was and its function whether night or day. I felt the staff worked well together as a team. The food was of the highest quality. The weekly listed activities were well run, re-encouraged residents to take part. I found it amazingly good value but, for residents seeking longer-term, sound financial backing would be necessary. The care of all concerned helped me enormously in my recuperation.

My wife is in care in Winton House. When I required surgery and was alone I contacted the Abbey about respite care. Every aspect of my stay exceeded expectations. My intake was efficiently dealt with by management. The carer and nursing was superb, kind, gentle, and with an appropriate sense of fun
and gentleness. Vocational care at its best! It was lovely to see the relationships between staff and elderly residents.

Current Review Score: 9.8 (9.838)

Overview of Review Score

The Review Score of 9.8 (9.838) out of 10 for Amesbury Abbey is based on a) the Average Rating and b) the number of positive Reviews.

  1. The Average Rating is 4.8 out of 5 from 27 Reviews in the last 24 months.
  2. The score for the number of positive Reviews is 5.0 out of 5 from 27 positive Reviews in the last 24 months.

Detailed Breakdown of Review Score

The maximum Review Score for a Care Home is 10, which is made up from the Average Rating of Reviews (maximum of 5 points) and the Number of Reviews (maximum of 5 points) in the last 24 months:

  1. 5 Points are available for the Average Rating from all Reviews in the last 24 months. The Average Rating of 4.838 for Amesbury Abbey is calculated as follows: ( (260 Excellents x 5) + (46 Goods x 4) + (2 Satisfactorys x 3) ) ÷ 308 Ratings = 4.838
  2. 5 Points are available for the number of Positive Reviews in the last 24 months. A Positive Review is defined as any Review with an 'Overall Experience' of '4' or '5' (out of a max rating '5'). The 5 Points relating to the number of positive Reviews for Amesbury Abbey is based on 27 positive Reviews in the last 24 months and is calculated as per below:

The 5 points available are broken down as follows:

    1. 4 points are available for the first 20 Positive Reviews in the last 24 months; 3 points for the first Positive Review, 0.125 Points for each of the next four Positive Reviews, 0.05 Points for the next five Positive Reviews, and finally 0.025 Points for the next ten Positive Reviews. (1st = 3.000, 2nd = 0.125, 3rd = 0.125, 4th = 0.125, 5th = 0.125, 6th = 0.050, 7th = 0.050, 8th = 0.050, 9th = 0.050, 10th = 0.050, 11th = 0.025, 12th = 0.025, 13th = 0.025, 14th = 0.025, 15th = 0.025, 16th = 0.025, 17th = 0.025, 18th = 0.025, 19th = 0.025, 20th = 0.025) 3 + 0.125 + 0.125 + 0.125 + 0.125 + 0.05 + 0.05 + 0.05 + 0.05 + 0.05 + 0.025 + 0.025 + 0.025 + 0.025 + 0.025 + 0.025 + 0.025 + 0.025 + 0.025 + 0.025 = 4
    2. 1 point is available for the number of Positive Reviews reaching 20% of the registered maximum number of service users in the last 24 months. If this number is partially reached, then that proportion of 1 point is given. eg a Care Home registered for a maximum of 50 service users has to reach 10 Positive Reviews to receive 1 point, if it has 7 reviews it will receive 0.7 points. 20% of the 40 registered maximum number of service users is 8, which has been reached with 27 Positive reviews. Points = 1
  3. When a Review is submitted by someone who has previously submitted a Review, only the latest Review will count towards the Review Score.
  4. If a Care Home does not have a review in the last 24 months, then it will not have a Review Score.
