Mom started to attend daycare once a week after she developed dementia. She so enjoyed it. When she became ill and went into hospital, we knew she wouldn't be able to go back home and live independently. It is a difficult decision to make but has been the right one for all of us. Mom is so happy, relaxed
and well cared for. The staff are really friendly, caring and professional. The meals are delicious. Mom is eating much better, and we book in to enjoy lunch with her. It's spotlessly clean with excellent facilities. Mom enjoys all the activities and has regained her confidence.

Mum moved into RS&G having initially been a day care user there. The transition was seamless, undoubtedly helped by the familiarity of the building and staff members. Having been elsewhere for respite last year, we were anxious how Mum would settle (she has Alzheimer's), but worries were unfounded as
the staff are genuinely so helpful, caring and friendly - and above all, happy! The vibe at RS&G is so welcoming, the place is spotless, the staff are also very supportive towards my dad, recognising the massive adjustment for him. Mum is now getting the stimulation she needs - so many activities planned and care is tailored to the individual. All the staff, without exception, are warm, kind, caring and empathetic. The most important thing of all is that Mum is happy!

The management team are so friendly and professional. One lady was so helpful when transferring our dad from the hospital, which was an awful time for the family. All the carers are so full of love and friendly too. The activities and entertainment are great fun and all are welcome. Lovely trips our
for scenery trips.
The food is so tasty and presented well, the restaurant is a credit to the home.
Overall, the nurses and carers make this home excellent.
Reply from Katie McCauley, Regsitered home manager at Royal Star & Garter - SolihullWe are so pleased to read your kind words, which of course we will pass on to the team, including the restaurant staff. It's fantastic to read about your positive experience. We understand how difficult moving to a care home can be, so we are grateful to hear how the team supported you through this.

My mother has been a resident at the Royal Star & Garter-Solihull for nearly a year. She had a warm welcome, and all the staff have been very friendly and caring. Any issues or problems that have cropped up have been dealt with quickly and the staff are always very approachable. She feels very happy
here and enjoys the activities and socialising with other residents.

My father has been a resident at Star & Garter Solihull for just over a year. It would be fair to say that he did not want to leave his own home and did not accept that he could no longer safely live independently or need any help whatsoever. There have been some difficult times during the first year
but the care and patience Dad has received from all members of staff has been exceptional. From the manager through to nursing staff, carers, catering staff and social team everybody works together like a family to support both residents and their families. Dad is now firmly part of that family and so much more settled and less agitated in his daily life. It is comforting to know that he is safe and very well cared for and visiting is now a happy occasion. Thank you to everybody. As a family we wish the manager all the best as he moves onto new adventures.

My first experience of the Royal Star and Garter was when my husband came in because as was no longer able to look after him due to a spell in hospital. He really loved it here especially going out on our special trips and pub lunches with staff that were extremely helpful and informative.
Four years
after his passing I found myself in need of help and my brother knew what an outstanding home this is. So it is thanks to his observations of my poor health that I chose to come along.
I was in respite for a few weeks initially and decided that as the care was so good I made the decision to become a permanent resident. Having been here for several months I am being looked after superbly in terms of reassurances of my medication and dignity and choices. Compared to life at home on my own, it is fantastic to have made friends with so many residents and staff.
Reply from Jamie Stubbs, Home Manager - Solihull at Royal Star & Garter - SolihullI am delighted to read that you chose to come and live at the Royal Star & Garter Solihull because of your husbands experience of the Home previously. We aim to deliver the highest standards of care and hope to enrich the lives of all of the residents who live here. I am so pleased that you feel that you are being looked after superbly and that you have made friends with so many of the residents and staff.

In my experience, the home has been a wonderful place for my own Dad in 2014 and still today the same now for my mother-in-law who loves it and the way the home feels like home to her and safe and caring and I can say when I had to visit, many potential homes for my father in 2013, nothing comes close
to the Royal Star & Garter and the high standards in every department and staff are all caring and nothing is ever too much. Well done to all the staff who make this home perfect. My family truly thank you for giving our mother back and enjoy our precious time.

My experience of the Royal Star & Garter - Solihull is two fold. First my father was here for a few years. Then years later my mother. Since my mother has has been living within the Royal Star & Garter - Solihull her mental health has been more positive and lively. She interacts with other residents
whom she now refers to as ‘friends’, and talks about the family ethos within the home. One of the first things that come to mind is how quickly medical situations can be addressed, for example access to a GP and receiving medication. Access to in-house physiotherapist services too. First impression of arriving is you are entering a 5* hotel, which is always reassuring.

We are extremely proud of the services that we provide to the residents that live in the Home. The team is totally on the ball, monitoring health issues to tackle them before they are an issue. There is also a strong sense of care for the individual and what they need. I feel so much happier now that my relative is there.
The opportunities for exercise relative to the capability is great and
the encouragement to take part has achieved a much better result than I could have imagined.
The ‘house’ approach works very well and I am getting to know both staff and residents. The staff are always helpful and reassuring if I have any queries.

My mother has been at Royal Star & Garter - Solihull since the beginning of June 2023. After a few initial problems, I think that she has become a little more settled and the carers have gotten used to her and her ways. Many of the carers are amazing and have loads of patience with the residents. There
are however some days when agency staff are in and to be honest, are not as engaged with the residents as the regular staff.
Some days there is live music which is great and my mother loves this. Other times residents are taken out for a ride on the mini bus which again is a lovely thing for them to do.
My only criticism would be about the decor and furnishings in Roundel. It probably could do with updating and reconfiguring to allow more comfortable seats for the residents. Some appear to spend a lot of time sitting on hard dining chairs and others on individual chairs around the room on their own.
Reply from Jamie Stubbs, Home Manager - Solihull at Royal Star & Garter - SolihullThanks for your feedback. We try to minimise the use of Agency staff but it is sometimes necessary in order to cover staff absences. We are increasing our bank staff so that we can have a regular pool of trusted familiar faces to help provide cover and reduce future requirements for agency use. Our Roundel house was independently assessed by a specialist care and dementia consultancy in August and it achieved their highest rating, with no specific concerns flagged about the environment. We manage a regular programme of cleaning and maintaining our furniture to ensure this is of a high standard and this may have contributed to a brief shortage of chairs at the time of your feedback. We would like to point out that this is unusual as there is normally plenty of comfortable seating in other parts of Roundel house.

My mother recently experienced a two week respite stay in Linley wing Royal Star & Garter - Solihull. Before she came she was very nervous as she had not previously experienced life in a care home and is very keen to stay in her own home. Although two weeks is a short stay in the context of getting
fully involved in all the many and varied activities which are provided, she was enthusiastic about her stay and said that she would be happy to come back for a two week 'holiday' in the future. Importantly, it has taken the fear away from my mother about life at the Royal Star & Garter - Solihull. From my perspective, I am very happy with the way that Mum has been treated and cared for by everyone she has met who all played their part in making her feel at home. Every effort was made to try to meet my mother's quite exacting requirements. Thank you very much for your patience and care.

Overall I think the care provided is excellent, the majority of the permanent carers (especially the lead carers) are fantastic, they treat Mum well, making sure she is treated with respect and are always warm and welcoming when I visit. The nursing care is also really good although sometimes I do feel
that we have to push a little on Mum's behalf, however, she is treated exceptionally well.
There are a significant number of activities within the home, the majority of which Mum really enjoys, only comment might be to try and include Mum in more activities outside of the home but do understand this is subject to the number of carers on duty.
Reply from Jamie Stubbs, Home Manager - Solihull at Royal Star & Garter - SolihullThank you very much for your positive comments surrounding the care that is provided for your mum. Many aspects are excellent and so are most of the staff. With all the pressures of covid/isolation/lockdowns and inflation, the service proved is seen as less good than two years ago. The fees are "eye-wateringly high" hence the "value for money" score. At times the management has been mediocre but
the fairly new manager is considered to be a great improvement on his predecessor. Where some categories are rated only good, permanent staff are almost always excellent, agency staff not always of such a high calibre which is perhaps inevitable.
Reply from Pauline Shaw, Director of Care at Royal Star & Garter - SolihullThank you for your feedback, it is really important to us. It is a privilege to care for your loved one and I know I speak on behalf of the whole team. It has been a difficult few years for all care homes managing with Covid and ensuring we continue to provide outstanding care. Staff have shown huge dedication in keeping the people we care for safe and ensuring they keep life as lively and interesting as possible. We're delighted that you find the level of care provided by our staff excellent. We try to limit our use of agency staff and to train them when we use them. We recognise that the cost of care is high, and so we engage in fundraising to enable us to keep our fees below the cost of the care we provide. If you would like to discuss any points with our Home Manager, then he would be delighted to speak with you.

From the moment I enter the home, the staff are kind, considerate and caring. I feel included in the family environment of the home, especially on the wing my mother lives in. Mum is treated with warmth and dignity at all times, her opinion is valued and her privacy is respected. There are plenty of
activities within and outside the home to participate in, as well as the option to spend time by herself. We feel very fortunate to be part of such a caring community.

I have been associated with the home for the past seven years. Firstly with my Aunty and for three years with my parents.
My father died two years ago in March leaving my mother still resident in Whitely House. Due to lockdown, we were unable to visit my mother and comfort her it was a very difficult
time. The staff were wonderful in supporting me. Unfortunately, my mother developed Alzheimer's to add to her dementia and sometimes hardly knows me. They continue to make her look wonderful and care for her in a kind and caring way. I wouldn't wish her to be anywhere else.

Overview of Review Score

The Review Score of 9.9 (9.900) out of 10 for Royal Star & Garter - Solihull is based on a) the Average Rating and b) the number of positive Reviews.

  1. The Average Rating is 4.9 out of 5 from 26 Reviews in the last 24 months.
  2. The score for the number of positive Reviews is 5.0 out of 5 from 26 positive Reviews in the last 24 months.

Detailed Breakdown of Review Score

The maximum Review Score for a Care Home is 10, which is made up from the Average Rating of Reviews (maximum of 5 points) and the Number of Reviews (maximum of 5 points) in the last 24 months:

  1. 5 Points are available for the Average Rating from all Reviews in the last 24 months. The Average Rating of 4.900 for Royal Star & Garter - Solihull is calculated as follows: ( (280 Excellents x 5) + (29 Goods x 4) + (1 Satisfactorys x 3) ) ÷ 310 Ratings = 4.9
  2. 5 Points are available for the number of Positive Reviews in the last 24 months. A Positive Review is defined as any Review with an 'Overall Experience' of '4' or '5' (out of a max rating '5'). The 5 Points relating to the number of positive Reviews for Royal Star & Garter - Solihull is based on 26 positive Reviews in the last 24 months and is calculated as per below:

The 5 points available are broken down as follows:

    1. 4 points are available for the first 20 Positive Reviews in the last 24 months; 3 points for the first Positive Review, 0.125 Points for each of the next four Positive Reviews, 0.05 Points for the next five Positive Reviews, and finally 0.025 Points for the next ten Positive Reviews. (1st = 3.000, 2nd = 0.125, 3rd = 0.125, 4th = 0.125, 5th = 0.125, 6th = 0.050, 7th = 0.050, 8th = 0.050, 9th = 0.050, 10th = 0.050, 11th = 0.025, 12th = 0.025, 13th = 0.025, 14th = 0.025, 15th = 0.025, 16th = 0.025, 17th = 0.025, 18th = 0.025, 19th = 0.025, 20th = 0.025) 3 + 0.125 + 0.125 + 0.125 + 0.125 + 0.05 + 0.05 + 0.05 + 0.05 + 0.05 + 0.025 + 0.025 + 0.025 + 0.025 + 0.025 + 0.025 + 0.025 + 0.025 + 0.025 + 0.025 = 4
    2. 1 point is available for the number of Positive Reviews reaching 20% of the registered maximum number of service users in the last 24 months. If this number is partially reached, then that proportion of 1 point is given. eg a Care Home registered for a maximum of 50 service users has to reach 10 Positive Reviews to receive 1 point, if it has 7 reviews it will receive 0.7 points. 20% of the 60 registered maximum number of service users is 12, which has been reached with 26 Positive reviews. Points = 1
  3. When a Review is submitted by someone who has previously submitted a Review, only the latest Review will count towards the Review Score.
  4. If a Care Home does not have a review in the last 24 months, then it will not have a Review Score.

Katie McCauley

Job Title: Home Manager Joined: 2024

I qualified as an adult nurse in 2013 and specialised in Cardiology and High Dependency care at Solihull Hospital. I then went on to manage a local care home for three years before I had the pleasure of joining Star & Garter – Solihull, in June 2024.

I am extremely passionate about leading the team to provide gold-standard care for our residents, enabling them to provide person-centred, individualised care. I have a special interest in diversity and inclusion and keep up to date with the most recent research to support both the residents and staff. I have an excellent relationship with the local community, including adult health and social care, churches and schools to widen the access to and delivery of multiple well-being activities for the Home.
