I was very worried to let my husband go for respite but the first day I was pleased with everything. The welcome was so tactfully done and he was made to feel special. I have not had to worry and wish I could have him there but I want him to be in our local town for full care.

My father has been in Branston Court for 10 years plus. The staff are always friendly and helpful. My dad is happy and content. I've never had any issues with the home. Staff are really supportive to my dad because he can be difficult at times.

Dad had a hip replacement and needed respite care due to me having a holiday pre-booked for a special occasion.
Dad received good care. The food was good accommodating his vegetarian diet. The only problem was the majority of residents had dementia and dad felt a little isolated. The staff were very
kind and caring.

My Father was given excellent care during his stay at the end of his life. The palliative care was exceedingly respectful and he died with dignity. The staff are very caring in a professional and friendly manner. The accommodation is like a high-quality hotel. So grateful that my Father was able to
experience such excellent care.

Whilst the weather has been very good for the last few weeks I would like to see the resident who can walk or be pushed in a wheelchair be taken out into the garden area.
Reply from Clare Sheehan, Careline Advisor at Branston Court Care Home

Thank you for your positive feedback. All colleagues at Branston encourage and assist residents to access outside space and the garden whenever possible. Unfortunately, in recent weeks, during the very hot weather, the garden has been less well used. Health agencies advice has been to keep our residents inside, particularly during the hotter parts of the day for their safety and well-being. As the days are now cooling slightly, our residents have been actively encouraged to go out into the garden again and for walks with colleagues. The team at Branston Court are also planning to give our gardens a makeover for our residents.

I'm very pleased with the care given, if I have a problem I go to the manager and it gets dealt with immediately.
I would like to see residents taken into the grounds for fresh air when possible.
The staff work very hard I'm sure you really need extra one on duty to be able to do this.
Reply from Clare Sheehan, Careline Advisor at Branston Court Care Home

Thank you for your positive feedback about colleagues working at Branston Court. Colleagues are deployed within the home daily to ensure specific resident’s needs are met in a timely manner; this may include spending time supporting residents in communal areas and/or accessing outside spaces. In recent weeks, we have had to limit the use of the garden area, due to the very hot weather in order to protect our residents from any ill effects this may have upon their wellbeing as advised by health agencies. However, we do promote our residents having as much fresh air as possible and plan further improvements to the garden area, so this can be an even more positive and enjoyable experience for all.

Very satisfied with all aspects of the care home but do feel the prices are high (and confusing). I acknowledge that this is not always the desire of the care home but outside influence. The staff have always been lovely and have spent many a chatty moment discussing a number of topics with residents
and carers. They always make sure the resident is included.

The level of care at Branston Court Care Home compared to other homes my mother has been a resident in is second to none.
Very caring and attentive staff who in my opinion go over and above the call of their duties. I feel my mother has been very well cared for and is very comfortable and settled in

Since Nana has moved to the home the staff have been brilliant with making the family aware of her changing needs and keeping us up to date with her health.

Access to my mother's room can be challenging at times as other residents on the floor are free to roam and man are disorientated. Mother appears to receive good quality compassionate care from the staff and her room is generally kept tidy. Some of the clothing in my mother's wardrobe may not actually
belong to her but is inevitable that items get mislaid in the laundry. Staff communicate with me openly regarding my mother's health and dementia condition. Overall I rate the care home highly.

My mother has been at Branston Court Care Home just under two years. She was diagnosed with Alzheimers and like most loving families we have found it a tough and emotional journey. However, since mum moved to Branston Court she has settled in really well and with the compassion and support of the brilliant
staff she is happy and content with her life (well as much as Alzheimers will allow). Family life is also much better, knowing our lovely mother and grandmother to her five grandchildren is safe and being well looked after by a team of wonderful caring people in Branston Court Care Home.

The staff are helpful and informative, give you updates of health issues and general well being. They show an awareness of eating habits and keep records of food and drink intake, which is very reassuring. They enable family and friends to be part of the care which is empowering for the family. Staff
are always happy to talk and are very approachable, very much an open door policy. The interaction of the staff and my sister is very positive and warm. They are always looking at improving her circumstances caused by the dementia and are proactive in finding solutions.

Branston Court was my salvation. The warmth and love and expertise in their field was brilliant. They gave me huge support at a difficult time and wonderful loving care to my husband. Each and every one of the staff and management, even the kitchen staff, housekeeper etc, were wonderful and treated
my husband as a person. Thank you Branston Court.

Current Review Score: 9.1 (9.138)

Overview of Review Score

The Review Score of 9.1 (9.138) out of 10 for Branston Court Care Home is based on a) the Average Rating and b) the number of positive Reviews.

  1. The Average Rating is 4.4 out of 5 from 9 Reviews in the last 24 months.
  2. The score for the number of positive Reviews is 4.7 out of 5 from 8 positive Reviews in the last 24 months.

Detailed Breakdown of Review Score

The maximum Review Score for a Care Home is 10, which is made up from the Average Rating of Reviews (maximum of 5 points) and the Number of Reviews (maximum of 5 points) in the last 24 months:

  1. 5 Points are available for the Average Rating from all Reviews in the last 24 months. The Average Rating of 4.449 for Branston Court Care Home is calculated as follows: ( (65 Excellents x 5) + (26 Goods x 4) + (15 Satisfactorys x 3) + (1 Poors x 2) ) ÷ 107 Ratings = 4.449
  2. 5 Points are available for the number of Positive Reviews in the last 24 months. A Positive Review is defined as any Review with an 'Overall Experience' of '4' or '5' (out of a max rating '5'). The 4.689 Points relating to the number of positive Reviews for Branston Court Care Home is based on 8 positive Reviews in the last 24 months and is calculated as per below:

The 5 points available are broken down as follows:

    1. 4 points are available for the first 10 Positive Reviews in the last 24 months; 3 points for the first Positive Review, and then 0.125 Points for each of the next four Positive Reviews and then 0.1 Points for the next five Positive Reviews. (1st = 3.000, 2nd = 0.125, 3rd = 0.125, 4th = 0.125, 5th = 0.125, 6th = 0.100, 7th = 0.100, 8th = 0.100, 9th = 0.100, 10th = 0.100) 3 + 0.125 + 0.125 + 0.125 + 0.125 + 0.1 + 0.1 + 0.1 = 3.8
    2. 1 point is available for the number of Positive Reviews reaching 20% of the registered maximum number of service users in the last 24 months. If this number is partially reached, then that proportion of 1 point is given. eg a Care Home registered for a maximum of 50 service users has to reach 10 Positive Reviews to receive 1 point, if it has 7 reviews it will receive 0.7 points. 20% of the 45 registered maximum number of service users is 9. 8 Positive Reviews ÷ 9 = 0.889
  3. When a Review is submitted by someone who has previously submitted a Review, only the latest Review will count towards the Review Score.
  4. If a Care Home does not have a review in the last 24 months, then it will not have a Review Score.

Ruth Thomson

Job Title: Home Manager

What does ‘kindness’ mean to you?

“To me, it means being person-centred and caring for residents both individually and holistically.”

As a Registered Nurse and specialist in Adult Nursing, Ruth has gained a wealth of experience in providing care and nursing support to elderly people, to enrich their lives. She is a knowledgeable and dedicated leader who is passionate about delivering the highest standards of care and quality of life for residents.

Having worked in the care sector for many years, Ruth closely shares HC-One’s vision in aiming to provide the kindest care for each and every resident. She extends this caring approach to her colleagues and works closely with them to deliver care and support to residents in a way that they gain the most benefit, in a warm and welcoming home.

When asked why she originally chose to work in the care sector, Ruth said:

“It was because I love caring for people. It’s something that started when my grandad was poorly when I was eight and I needed to help put his socks on, I took real pride in caring for him. I’ve never worked in any other sector.”

When asked what she enjoys most about her role, Ruth remarked:

“I enjoy leading my team and encouraging them to create great things, plus I love working in a family-friendly environment”.

Ruth has also achieved much outside of work, with her proudest achievement being a mother to two sons. Outside of work, Ruth enjoys spending time with her husband and two boys, especially taking them to play for their football teams. She also enjoys watching Derby County.
