Was looking for a new care home for my aunt who has had a poor experience at a previous home. Emotions have run high and tears have been shed. All of this was put in the shade by Branston Court. The staff and management interacted well with support and understanding. Their kindness and compassion given
to my Aunt have been overwhelmingly positive which already shines in my Auntie's face, which is already looking forward to the future.

My husband came into the home July 31st. I am so delighted he has settled and I know he is well cared for. Any issues as a family we have had, the carers and manager deal with promptly. I have no concerns at all. In fact, I can now sleep at night.

I would recommend this provider, mostly because of their exceptional hospitality, courtesy and friendly atmosphere in the home, you are treated like family. The moment you step into the home, workers and service users alike. This runs from the manager to even the cleaner, almost handy to assist. This
provider is top of the pick among the lots.

The first-ever visit to this Care Home which I explained but on first impressions, I was disappointed with the reception, no quick introduction to explain about the care home or how it runs. Sadly not to even know where my relative was or which room number they resided. Nice clean room environment but
sadly majorly lacking in staff. For a 45 room facility dangerously low on staff. After 2 hours in my relative's room, I experienced no sign of any staff appearing, plus no visible signs of any drinks being used or care and attention. Also allowed to leave the care home unchallenged, overall is this the kind of acceptability in care homes now.
Reply from Clare Sheehan, Careline Advisor at Branston Court Care Home

I am sorry to hear that you have concerns which you felt unable to discuss with myself as Home Manager or the staff on duty during your visit. It is unfortunate that I was not aware of these concerns; I would have most certainly tried to have dealt with them at the time. About our staffing levels, these are reviewed daily and are based on how many Residents we have in the home and their level of care needs. However, as I am sure you appreciate certain times of the day can be busier than others. I am sorry that you felt the care and attention for all our Residents was not evident during your visit as myself and my colleagues at Branston Court pride ourselves in always providing the best possible care at all times. When our Residents have visitors we like to give them some privacy, unless of course specific care interventions are required. I apologise if colleagues did not offer you refreshments or that not disturbing you during your visit, was unexpected. With regards to being unchallenged on leaving the home, when visitors enter the home that we are not familiar with, they would obviously be asked who they are here to visit asked to sign in, therefore omitting any need to approach visitors as they leave. Thank you for your review and I hope this response addresses your concerns.

With dad being a "young" 72-year-old capacities male, we knew his end of like placement needed to be somewhere that went over and beyond and strayed from traditional "care". It was so important to get somewhere that dad would be respected, listened to and accommodated his asks. Branston Court and its
wonderful staff met and exceeded our list.
Dad felt the girls were all lovely and can't do enough for you. On sad days, their bubbly personalities pulled us all through. As a family, we were always updated and dad was always happy, smart and most importantly to him and his beloved dog visit daily. We can't thank the staff enough.

If you are reading this review debating whether Branston Court would be suitable for your nearest and dearest, let me assure you that the facility is fantastic. The rooms are a home from home, very clean and spacious. But it's the staff that make this care home so special. From the top down, they cannot
do enough, not only for my father-in-law but for all our family. From cups of tea to sandwiches to full cooked meals, they care for everyone going through a painful time. 10/10.

My partner was admitted to Branston Court for end of life care.
I have nothing but praise to this home. The level of care is second to none, nothing is too much trouble for the very caring and attentive staff who go above and beyond the call of their duties, from management to kitchen and housekeeping,
they are wonderful to my partner. Who, from the first time he entered the home, said he felt happy and safe and it helped me a lot knowing he was being cared for by such wonderful people. If you're looking for a quality care home, this is it.

My sister came to this home from hospital and had previously been in a care home (bad experiences) but she needed full nursing care. My sister was treated so well by everyone, from manager down, smiles, politeness, caring staff. My sister did not survive for very long after arriving there, but the time
she had was what, we as a family, would have loved her to have received from others at the beginning of her illness (as she deteriorated). Bless her, it was hard at the end to see her deteriorate, but the staff, from kitchen to top could not have been better.

I have found Branston Court to be very helpful and positive in what has been a very hard decision to make.
My mum moved to Branston two weeks ago, she has dementia and was resistant to move into a residential setting. The staff have been extremely supportive and have made the move so much easier. A
special thank you to the lady who guided and helped both us and mum.

Unfortunately, my cousin is in a poor physical and mental state.
This last time he was sleeping and uncommunicative.
He appears to be well looked after as best as you can achieve. He does not appear to partake in any activities, possibly he can't.
The grass surrounding the building is uncut, this
may be on purpose - but could pose a fire risk at times.
Reply from Claire Hurworth, Care Line Manager at Branston Court Care Home

Thank you very much for your positive feedback regarding the care that is being received here at Branston Court Care Home. The grass did get a little longer than we would like, but has now been cut and we have secured a contractor to come along more regularly to keep the grass and grounds tidy. A larger variety of well-being activities are now being provided within the home such as live entertainment, arts and crafts and now the gardens are tidier, residents will be able to sit outside and enjoy getting involved in some gardening activities in the coming weeks.

My mom came to the home for respite care after being neglected by carers in her own home.
She was made very welcome and has been very well cared for since.
The staff are lovely and so kind.
I cannot thank them enough for their compassion and genuine interest in mom.
I personally have also benefitted
from their sincere empathy and kindness.
I hope mom can stay here now as she is happy, safe and cared for at last.
Thank you so much.

Current Review Score: 9.1 (9.138)

Overview of Review Score

The Review Score of 9.1 (9.138) out of 10 for Branston Court Care Home is based on a) the Average Rating and b) the number of positive Reviews.

  1. The Average Rating is 4.4 out of 5 from 9 Reviews in the last 24 months.
  2. The score for the number of positive Reviews is 4.7 out of 5 from 8 positive Reviews in the last 24 months.

Detailed Breakdown of Review Score

The maximum Review Score for a Care Home is 10, which is made up from the Average Rating of Reviews (maximum of 5 points) and the Number of Reviews (maximum of 5 points) in the last 24 months:

  1. 5 Points are available for the Average Rating from all Reviews in the last 24 months. The Average Rating of 4.449 for Branston Court Care Home is calculated as follows: ( (65 Excellents x 5) + (26 Goods x 4) + (15 Satisfactorys x 3) + (1 Poors x 2) ) ÷ 107 Ratings = 4.449
  2. 5 Points are available for the number of Positive Reviews in the last 24 months. A Positive Review is defined as any Review with an 'Overall Experience' of '4' or '5' (out of a max rating '5'). The 4.689 Points relating to the number of positive Reviews for Branston Court Care Home is based on 8 positive Reviews in the last 24 months and is calculated as per below:

The 5 points available are broken down as follows:

    1. 4 points are available for the first 10 Positive Reviews in the last 24 months; 3 points for the first Positive Review, and then 0.125 Points for each of the next four Positive Reviews and then 0.1 Points for the next five Positive Reviews. (1st = 3.000, 2nd = 0.125, 3rd = 0.125, 4th = 0.125, 5th = 0.125, 6th = 0.100, 7th = 0.100, 8th = 0.100, 9th = 0.100, 10th = 0.100) 3 + 0.125 + 0.125 + 0.125 + 0.125 + 0.1 + 0.1 + 0.1 = 3.8
    2. 1 point is available for the number of Positive Reviews reaching 20% of the registered maximum number of service users in the last 24 months. If this number is partially reached, then that proportion of 1 point is given. eg a Care Home registered for a maximum of 50 service users has to reach 10 Positive Reviews to receive 1 point, if it has 7 reviews it will receive 0.7 points. 20% of the 45 registered maximum number of service users is 9. 8 Positive Reviews ÷ 9 = 0.889
  3. When a Review is submitted by someone who has previously submitted a Review, only the latest Review will count towards the Review Score.
  4. If a Care Home does not have a review in the last 24 months, then it will not have a Review Score.

Ruth Thomson

Job Title: Home Manager

What does ‘kindness’ mean to you?

“To me, it means being person-centred and caring for residents both individually and holistically.”

As a Registered Nurse and specialist in Adult Nursing, Ruth has gained a wealth of experience in providing care and nursing support to elderly people, to enrich their lives. She is a knowledgeable and dedicated leader who is passionate about delivering the highest standards of care and quality of life for residents.

Having worked in the care sector for many years, Ruth closely shares HC-One’s vision in aiming to provide the kindest care for each and every resident. She extends this caring approach to her colleagues and works closely with them to deliver care and support to residents in a way that they gain the most benefit, in a warm and welcoming home.

When asked why she originally chose to work in the care sector, Ruth said:

“It was because I love caring for people. It’s something that started when my grandad was poorly when I was eight and I needed to help put his socks on, I took real pride in caring for him. I’ve never worked in any other sector.”

When asked what she enjoys most about her role, Ruth remarked:

“I enjoy leading my team and encouraging them to create great things, plus I love working in a family-friendly environment”.

Ruth has also achieved much outside of work, with her proudest achievement being a mother to two sons. Outside of work, Ruth enjoys spending time with her husband and two boys, especially taking them to play for their football teams. She also enjoys watching Derby County.
