Moorland House provides residential and short-stay care for up to 48 residents in a historic, character-filled home in the village of Hathersage, Derbyshire.

With a history dating back over 70 years as a care home—and longer still as a former manor house and school—Moorland House is a well-loved part of the local community. It’s just 100 yards from the high street and a three-minute walk from the train station, offering easy access for families and friends.

Bedrooms are all single and en-suite, with residents encouraged to bring personal items to make the space feel like home. Communal areas include comfortable lounges, a hair salon, lift access, and outdoor seating areas looking out to the surrounding countryside.

The gardens, complete with a summer house, host events throughout the year, including a popular summer fête and intergenerational gardening projects with local Cubs and Brownies. Indoors, activities include art classes, singalongs, quizzes, and reminiscence sessions, alongside visits from therapy dogs and chaplain-led discussions.

Meals are freshly prepared by an experienced team—including a head cook formerly of The Savoy—with weekly roasts, homemade soups, and baking sessions led by residents. Afternoon teas and personalised cakes add a special touch to everyday dining.

At Moorland House, care isn’t just about support, it’s about creating a community where residents thrive. Whether you’re searching for yourself or a loved one, for residential or short-stay care, the team at Moorland House are here to help.

My Mum was admitted to MH in Feb and I visited from Australia in Feb and experienced her being in MH for just under 1 week, as she was in hospital the other 2 weeks.
I think overall the care was really good. There have been some exceptions:
1. Slow response to some requests for help. I understand
this can happen though.
2. One carer Mum said was rough and caused bruising. I could establish the name of this person but said she had not been seen since the incident by that person. Otherwise really happy. Cake and card on birthday was a nice touch. I feel she is in good hands.
Reply from Carly Theobald, Home Manager at Moorland HouseThank you for taking the time to share your feedback. We're very pleased to hear that your overall feedback is that you feel your mum in good hands and that the team has made a positive impression, particularly with thoughtful touches like celebrating her birthday. Your mum was quite unwell when she first came to us but it's now great to see her feeling so much better, engaging, and receptive to care being offered.
At the same time, we take your concerns seriously. If you would be open to discussing this further, please do get in touch with us directly.
Thank you again for your comments and for trusting us with your mum's care.

We needed urgent respite care for my father.
We were aware he had issues with his short term memory- but were not aware of the extent of his condition.
Moorland House responded very quickly to my enquiries and we were fortunate that they had a room free.
Carly and Shelley came to our house to meet
dad. They were very professional, understanding and reassuring.
Without exception, all the staff at Moorland House were professional, welcoming and so kind with dad and myself.
They were undergoing a major redecoration- so there was an organised chaos- but the place felt warm, welcoming and very homely.
Dad struggled with settling in- but he was looked after with kindness, patience, respect and understanding of his condition.
We were allowed to visit any time and our dog was welcomed in too.
There is always something going. Attention to the needs of residents is excellent.
What could have been a very traumatic experience has been made so much easier because of the care from Moorland House.
Reply from Carly Theobald, Home Manager at Moorland HouseThank you for taking the time to share your experience. We understand how challenging the transition can be, and we're so pleased we could support both you and your dad during this time. The whole team will really appreciate your kind words. Providing compassionate, respectful care is at the heart of everything we do, so it means a great deal to hear this reflected in your experience. We're also grateful for your patience during our refurbishment and delighted that Moorland House still felt warm and welcoming. It's lovely to know your dad has been supported as he settled in, and that you've felt able to visit freely - even with your dog. Thank you again for your trust and support.

When I moved my cousin to Moorland House over 2 years ago her first comment opening the door was "it's lovely and warm". She'd been very attached to her house for 50 years but couldn't cope even with 3 carer visits a day.

It is most important now that she regards Moorland House as her true home.

The rooms are excellent including high ceilings. The home is in a beautiful area and she is fortunate to have a fine view. There is a spacious garden too.

She needed a high level of care initially but as she adjusted and her health improved she has moved through medium to a low assessment which has helped with the fees. She'd become very confused running her own home and her mental health has improved in Moorland House. She feels very well looked after and is happy and articulate.

The home is well organised and the care staff (day and night) very responsive. Recent redecoration and improvements show management really listen to the residents and help to maintain overall quality.

Reply from Carly Theobald, Home Manager at Moorland HouseThank you so much for taking the time to share such a thoughtful and detailed review of Moorland House. It's especially encouraging to hear that your cousin's health and wellbeing have improved during her time with us, and that she has been able to move to a lower level of care. Supporting residents to regain confidence and independence, wherever possible, is a key part of our approach, so your comments are very rewarding for the whole team. We're also pleased that you've noticed the responsiveness and dedication of both our day and night staff, as well as the recent improvements to the home. Listening to residents and their families is incredibly important to us, and we are always looking for ways to enhance the environment and overall experience.

My mum's room is very nice, however I do feel the home has a number of maintenance issues which need addressing i.e. the heating. My mum is cold in the mornings and has a portable heater to rectify this however she cannot see to put this on and is reliant on staff to do this for her. The majority of
staff are brilliant. However, I do think communication and processes could be improved such as ordering medication and passing on messages and actioning these. There are long waits for medication which you could buy over the counter, I don't know why this happens. The food has improved since this was discussed at the relative's meeting however the quality isn't consistent. This review may seem negative however the home is warm and welcoming and the staff are lovely. Sometimes it's the small things that make a big difference.
Reply from Carly Theobald, Home Manager at Moorland HouseThank you for sharing such a thoughtful and balanced review of your mum's experience with us. I'm really pleased to hear that you find the home warm and welcoming, and that your mum's room and the care from our team have made a positive impression. I'm sorry to hear about the issues you've raised around heating and maintenance. Your mum's comfort is very important, and we are already looking into this matter as a priority to ensure her room is consistently warm and that she is not reliant on temporary measures. I'm glad to hear you've noticed some improvement in the food following the relatives' meeting. We will continue working closely with our kitchen team to ensure meals are of a high and reliable standard every day. Your comment that "it's the small things that make a big difference" really resonates, and it's something we fully agree with. I would welcome the opportunity to speak with you directly to discuss your concerns further.

Mum has been resident in Moorland House now for over four years. She has been looked after really well by the management and staff, who treat her with a lot of dignity in a friendly, caring atmosphere. It's reassuring to know that Mum is checked on and has her needs met day and night. She is very content
and feels really at home, especially in her room which is clean and bright with a great view. For visiting relatives and residents alike, it's like an extended family. We all enjoy the extra efforts the staff make at different times of the year to offer outdoor and indoor special events. Staff are also attentive to requests or comments that are made by relatives. Many thanks.

Mum has been a long term resident (10 years) at Moorland house. Following some years of poor management and declining standards at the home the situation is now rapidly changing under the refreshing efforts of an excellent new manager (and team). I'm sure there are still improvements to be made but
already the change is dramatic and the home feels like a supporting caring environment again where the physical standards of the home and the staff engagement are now returning to the high standards that the residents deserve. Moorland House feels like a good place for mum to live and we have confidence that her physical, mental and spiritual needs are being very well looked after. We are greatly relieved to see the renewed energy and focus in the house from the management team and have great confidence that over the next few years Moorland House will be an excellent care home.

It is heartening to hear that the recent changes have had such a positive impact on your experience and, most importantly, on your mum's wellbeing. I shall ensure your comments are shared with the team.

We were faced with having to find a Care Home for mother at pretty short notice and relying on reading reviews and recommendations from relations of relations who had been Resident at Moorlands, we arranged a visit. The visit was extremely informative and the pleasant atmosphere in the Home soon became
apparent. Mother has settled very well, there were a few minor teething problems, but all our queries etc were soon dealt with promptly and professionally. My mother choses not to participate in activities, which is a crying shame because they all look engaging and fun. One minor point is a slight niggle - my mother has extremely arthritic hands and struggles with cutting the healthy and generous portions of meat!! That aside, myself and my siblings are so pleased mother is in the capable hands of all the team at Moorlands.

Mum has lived at Moorland house for 3 years. The staff are very caring and have adapted to her changing needs well. She was initially mobile with help of 1 but in last 6 months has become less mobile and now needs a soft diet. The staff show kindness and empathy and she trusts the staff and has formed
a close relationship with them. They involve her in activities on a daily basis and she is content.

Our family were all super impressed with the high level of care my Mum got in Moorland House. All the staff were efficient, respectful and caring but they also managed to be professional in a down to earth way. We we especially grateful for the way that end of life care was handled and were very pleased

Overall standard was acceptable

Listed below where I feel improvements could and should be implemented:-

Leak in Mothers Bathroom on arrival Surely a Pre Occupancy " Check List" would be useful to avert such issues and it took days to rectify said leak from the WC- created a H&S issue as large

floor areas had standing water

Biggest surprise on leaving ""NO EXIT DOCS" as a result Mother didn't get her Petty Cash returned and she left with her panic alarm under her clothing, necessitating a special trip to sort / return

Some of the food Mother struggled to cut up (she won't raise a hand and ask for help) so carers for me should be more vigilant during mealtimes and note and action those struggling

Mother much enjoyed the " Activities" and Tuesdays time with the Chaplain and her Service
Very surprised that as I assume strong link MHA to the local Methodist church that plans to get residents on Sundays there wasn't
far better organised (no transport, not enough carers to attend)

Our mum began to need more care than her assisted living flat could provide. Having looked at several and asked around, we were lucky to get a room for Mum at Moorland House. The decision to move a parent into a residential care home is not an easy one, but we were unable to cope with her increasing
needs. Mum has been there now for 6 months and we are pleased with her care. The home is responsive, the atmosphere is friendly and welcoming and there is a programme of activities which is good. Her room is spotlessly clean and she has a hairdressing appt each week. Her nails were even painted recently. The building may not look the smartest from the outside but don't let that deter you. There is a warm welcome inside and the friendly carers have the patience of saints.
Reply from Shirley Reece Johnson, Home Manager at Moorland HouseWe are so pleased that you feel you have chosen the right home for your mother, as we know how difficult the transition can be when moving from your own environment. It is good that your mum takes part in the activities at the home and now we have the collaborative communities we are also introducing and inviting the local community to join us in our programmes at the home. We do strive to make the home as welcoming as possible and the facilities we have i.e. cleaners, homemade foods, and the family-oriented atmosphere add to the ambiance of the home. We hope you and your family continue to enjoy what we have to offer and thank you for your positive comments.

My mother required more care as she became frailer and we wanted to choose a care home with good recommendations and within easy reach of the family. Moorland House met both requirements. Whilst the decor may be dated and in need of some TLC, the important aspects of care support, food and staff are
excellent.

Truly a wonderful care home. Level of care is very high, food is wonderful and there are daily varied activities. I feel nothing is too much trouble for the staff and minor issues are handled quickly. The staff appear happy and caring (even if run off their feet) - lots of smiley faces. The Moorlands
social media page is a great way of keeping up with events, so lovely to see Mum engaging in activities. My mum is thriving here. Thanks to the gentle and kind way Mum is spoken to at Moorlands she now speaks to me more positively than in the past. Highly recommended.
Reply from Loren Rosebery, Deputy Home Manager at Moorland HouseThank you so much for your wonderful words. I am so pleased that your mum is happy here. We are truly happy to have her, and staff enjoy the interactions with her as much as she does with them. Our catering team endeavour to offer a balanced and varied diet and are happy to provide alternatives to suit the individual. Our activities programme is diverse and engaging. I know your mum particularly enjoys visits from the therapy dog and the Love to Move chair-based exercises. We work hard to keep our social media updated. It is not only a great way for prospective residents and their families to see what we have on offer, but for families and friends of our residents to see them living their later lives well. Mum has lived at Moorland House for just over two years and settled in really quickly thanks to the friendliness and patience of the staff. The thing that is so nice about Moorland House is other residents' families also say hello and have a chat with her as I do with them when I visit. The staff are
helpful, friendly and polite and I know there is always someone I can talk to if there is a problem. Not everything is perfect, but Mum is happy and because I can call in any time of the day, it gives me great comfort to know that if I can't be there she is well looked after. The activities are frequent and well-organised and the staff get really involved especially with sing a longs and musical events. Christmas was amazing, the home was beautifully decorated and there was practically something happening right through December. They also encourage groups and residents from the village to visit the home, to talk and do activities with the residents which is lovely to see.

Christmas can be a lonely time but the staff at Moorland House do all they can to make sure everyone has an enjoyable time. There are many activities and outside groups visiting ie choirs, school children and theatre company. Although this is just once a year the other 11 months are just as good! I
believe a home is only as good as its staff and at Moorland House they are excellent.
Reply from Shirley Reece Johnson, Home Manager at Moorland HouseThank you for your great comments regarding the Christmas activities we had some positive feedback from other families and friends of the residents. We will be having a good range of activities throughout this year that are already being planned for. One of the new innovations that MHA have included at Moorland House is Collaborative Communities and this will be established in the peak district area so that the whole community can become involved in activities in and out of the home. We have already established some good partnership relations with the Church and others in the community with Moorland House hosting the Friday afternoon tea/coffee and cake for people in Hathersage Village this has proved very popular. Thank you for recognising how excellent the new staff are and they are proud to be part of the team at Moorland House and believe that this working relationship enables the residents to feel they are living in a homely setting.

We spent a long time looking for a suitable home for my mum and visited many different places that looked great online but were disappointed in reality. As soon as we set foot in Moorland House, it felt different. The staff were naturally relaxed and friendly which was reflected in how content residents
were. The home has lots of big windows with beautiful views of the gardens and hills so it feels light. There are lovely craft activities organised and visits from musicians and entertainers that bring residents together and most importantly, there are conversations and companionship. Mum has lived at Moorland House for just over a year now and she loves it - she feels safe and happy - and we in turn feel reassured that we definitely made the right decision for her.

The staff are responsive to the needs of my dad and manage these needs well between them. The home has a very caring ethos and this is led by an excellent manager. Mum has been living and thriving in the super environment of Moorland House Care Home for the last five years. She's been really welcome and cared for ever since she moved in, even calling it 'my home' after only the first couple of weeks. It was a huge relief to the whole family to have Mum so happy
and engaged after feeling isolated in her old home. A huge thank you to all the staff...or 'the extended family' as Mum calls them.
Reply from Loren Rosebery, Deputy Home Manager at Moorland HouseThank you so much for your positive comments relating to Moorland House and the homely feeling. It’s really nice to know that you and your mum feel the family atmosphere, just as we do. It’s a pleasure looking after Mum and she’s an amazing friend and companion to our other residents. We feel very fortunate to have her as part of the Moorland House family.

Overall Experience 4.0 out of 5
Moorland House is a warm, friendly and caring environment. The staff all know my mother by name and she seems happy and well looked after. The home manager runs a 'tight ship' in my view and does a great job in light of tight resources and the legacy of covid. I know my mother would appreciate more
home cooking of cakes and I think her room could do with a quarterly 'deep clean' but overall I'm very happy with Moorland House.
Reply from Shirley Reece Johnson, Home Manager at Moorland HouseThank you for your acknowledgement of Moorland House, the staff and atmosphere. It is always nice for staff to be recognised and acknowledged for the care that they give to our residents and support to the families. I would like to reassure you that we now have a full compliment of staff again and the deep cleans of all the rooms have been scheduled by the housekeeper. New menus have just been introduced and there is a good choice and variety of home cooked foods available. It is a pleasure to take care of your mum and we are pleased that your overall view of the home is a positive one.

Overview of Review Score

The Review Score of 9.4 (9.378) out of 10 for Moorland House is based on a) the Average Rating and b) the number of positive Reviews.

  1. The Average Rating is 4.6 out of 5 from 13 Reviews in the last 24 months.
  2. The score for the number of positive Reviews is 4.8 out of 5 from 12 positive Reviews in the last 24 months.

Detailed Breakdown of Review Score

The maximum Review Score for a Care Home is 10, which is made up from the Average Rating of Reviews (maximum of 5 points) and the Number of Reviews (maximum of 5 points) in the last 24 months:

  1. 5 Points are available for the Average Rating from all Reviews in the last 24 months. The Average Rating of 4.578 for Moorland House is calculated as follows: ( (100 Excellents x 5) + (43 Goods x 4) + (11 Satisfactorys x 3) ) ÷ 154 Ratings = 4.578
  2. 5 Points are available for the number of Positive Reviews in the last 24 months. A Positive Review is defined as any Review with an 'Overall Experience' of '4' or '5' (out of a max rating '5'). The 4.8 Points relating to the number of positive Reviews for Moorland House is based on 12 positive Reviews in the last 24 months and is calculated as per below:

The 5 points available are broken down as follows:

    1. 4 points are available for the first 20 Positive Reviews in the last 24 months; 3 points for the first Positive Review, 0.125 Points for each of the next four Positive Reviews, 0.05 Points for the next five Positive Reviews, and finally 0.025 Points for the next ten Positive Reviews. (1st = 3.000, 2nd = 0.125, 3rd = 0.125, 4th = 0.125, 5th = 0.125, 6th = 0.050, 7th = 0.050, 8th = 0.050, 9th = 0.050, 10th = 0.050, 11th = 0.025, 12th = 0.025, 13th = 0.025, 14th = 0.025, 15th = 0.025, 16th = 0.025, 17th = 0.025, 18th = 0.025, 19th = 0.025, 20th = 0.025) 3 + 0.125 + 0.125 + 0.125 + 0.125 + 0.05 + 0.05 + 0.05 + 0.05 + 0.05 + 0.025 + 0.025 = 3.8
    2. 1 point is available for the number of Positive Reviews reaching 20% of the registered maximum number of service users in the last 24 months. If this number is partially reached, then that proportion of 1 point is given. eg a Care Home registered for a maximum of 50 service users has to reach 10 Positive Reviews to receive 1 point, if it has 7 reviews it will receive 0.7 points. 20% of the 48 registered maximum number of service users is 9.6, which has been reached with 12 Positive reviews. Points = 1
  3. When a Review is submitted by someone who has previously submitted a Review, only the latest Review will count towards the Review Score.
  4. If a Care Home does not have a review in the last 24 months, then it will not have a Review Score.

Job Title: Administration Manager Joined: 2003

I have worked at Moorland House in an administrative role for 17 years, being promoted to Administration Manager around 4 years ago. I am passionate about ensuring that residents and staff have the best possible experience of living and working at Moorland House. I think Moorland House is special, because we provide our residents with a ‘home’, not a Home. Our friendly family atmosphere is one of the first things that visitors to the home notice, and I am incredibly proud of that. Outside of work, I enjoy spending time with my grandchildren and walking in the beautiful local countryside with my two dogs, Nev and Aggie.

Job Title: Home Chaplain Joined: 2020

I started working here as a Chaplain in August 2020 and I had such a warm welcome from staff and residents. As part of my job role, I work alongside our amazingly talented Activity Coordinator getting involved in activities participating with residents and spending quality time with them all such as playing scrabble every Tuesday and also arts and crafts. I carry out a midweek service every Wednesday morning and also hold a prayer group every Friday morning. I am always available to talk to anyone, staff, residents, relatives as a listening ear. I spent over 20 years working for the NHS as a Pharmacy Technician in hospitals in London and Essex and more latterly at Sheffield Children’s Hospital. I am very involved at St. Thomas’ the local Anglican church where amongst other things I help lead the Home Bible Group for the older folk and help run ‘Young at Heart’ once a month where we get together for a cup of tea, a piece of cake and plenty of chat.
