Moorland House provides residential and short-stay care for up to 48 residents in a historic, character-filled home in the village of Hathersage, Derbyshire.

With a history dating back over 70 years as a care home—and longer still as a former manor house and school—Moorland House is a well-loved part of the local community. It’s just 100 yards from the high street and a three-minute walk from the train station, offering easy access for families and friends.

Bedrooms are all single and en-suite, with residents encouraged to bring personal items to make the space feel like home. Communal areas include comfortable lounges, a hair salon, lift access, and outdoor seating areas looking out to the surrounding countryside.

The gardens, complete with a summer house, host events throughout the year, including a popular summer fête and intergenerational gardening projects with local Cubs and Brownies. Indoors, activities include art classes, singalongs, quizzes, and reminiscence sessions, alongside visits from therapy dogs and chaplain-led discussions.

Meals are freshly prepared by an experienced team—including a head cook formerly of The Savoy—with weekly roasts, homemade soups, and baking sessions led by residents. Afternoon teas and personalised cakes add a special touch to everyday dining.

Recently a new management team took over and the process seems to have been handled well. The staff are very caring and seem to have the residents best interests at heart. The kitchen staff work hard to make mealtimes enjoyable and the residents are encouraged to eat together. The cleaning staff and
laundry staff do an excellent job. There is a good programme of planned activities and the residents religious and spiritual needs are also considered important. The local medical centre provides excellent medical support.

In our experience, Moorland House provides a warm, comfortable and truly caring and loving environment where each resident is treated as an individual with respect and dignity. The atmosphere is one of happiness and security provided by wonderful staff who are always prepared to go the extra mile in
caring for the residents. This also includes the catering and maintenance staff who are equally dedicated. I cannot recommend Moorland House highly enough. My mother has been a resident for 11 years.

When I visited Moorlands initially I was impressed with the warmth of the staff. Since my mother has stayed at Moorlands I have been even more impressed. I do not know who is responsible for recruitment but they are clearly doing a great job. It is the attitude of the staff that is key in such a home
and in this Moorlands scores top marks.


There are many staff at Moorlands fulfilling a wide variety of roles, helping residents, wheeling them to meals, delivering meals to rooms, caring for every need, sorting out prescriptions, helping liaise with the NHS for hospital visits etc etc. I have found the Moorland staff to be both highly competent and very helpful.


The other thing I like about Moorlands is the relaxed atmosphere. Relatives are welcomed and everything is made easy. But I repeat, for me, the key to such a care home is the warmth of the staff and they get 10 out of 10 from me.

I live 110 miles away, I visited my friend over 2 days after she had been in the home for 6weeks. In the circumstances, I cannot rate all areas.
My friend seemed to have settled in nicely and seemed happy, her room was homely, with personal furniture and pictures etc...
Everywhere I saw was clean
and all the staff I had contact with were friendly and helpful.

My mother went into Moorland House in October 2008 aged 89. In choosing a care home for my mother I had previous experience of my Father-in-law needing respite care over many years and had visited him in a number of homes they varied a lot.
I was shown round with no previous appointment and was impressed
with the cleanliness and friendly attitude of the staff there. It didn't feel like an institution but more like a home.
Initially, my mother didn't need nursing care just company and good food. Over the next 8 years as she aged, she gradually deteriorated choosing to spend more time in her room. The local GP and the staff didn't give up on her always trying to find ways to improve her quality of life.
She passed away on Christmas Eve 2016. Aged 97.
I can't speak highly enough of all the staff always kind, professional and cheerful. Moorland House is a lovely place. If I ever need a care home, I'd be happy to go into Moorland House. You can't get a better recommendation than that!

My father went into Moorland House for the last five weeks of his life aged 100.
He received excellent care, everyone was very kind and caring, they treated him with dignity. We found it very a homely place to be.

Although my Mum was only at Moorland House for one week's respite care, I found it to be clean, friendly and very helpful with all aspects of her care. She enjoyed being able to have a bath again and loved the friendliness and humour of the care staff. The home is spacious, light and beautifully decorated
and overall has a homely friendly feel to it. The gardens are well maintained with plenty of seating areas and places to sit in privacy. On the strength of a one week only respite stay, I would highly recommend it.

Mum has been at Moorlands for a few year now and she has had nothing but the best of care from all the staff from Care Home Manager to carers, nurses, and kitchen staff. It is a very friendly, caring, homely and well-run home. Sadly we have to move mum as her needs cannot be met any longer at Moorlands.

My mother, aged 94, moved into Moorland House for weeks ago. We cannot commend all the staff highly enough for their incredible patience, kindness, understanding and humour. As a whole family we have felt utterly supported and care for. We have never been afraid to ask for things and they have always
been so willing to provide. We must say a special tribute to the home manager who always seems to be calm, patient and organised. We cannot praise them enough.

My mother, who was blind, immobile and recently widowed, was in Moorland House for 9 months before she died. Throughout this time she was treated with dignity, sensitivity and genuine compassion. End of life care was exemplary: her wishes not to go into hospital respected, the nursing excellent, the
caring thoughtful and tender. The family were always made welcome, their wishes consulted, their needs considered. There was a sense that all staff were valued and played their part in creating the home's excellent atmosphere, from the manager to the handyman and cleaners, administrator, nurses, carers and chaplain: a tribute to the quality of the management. Beautiful setting and attractive, comfortable rooms, with a variety of activities provided and appetising meals.

Would recommend Moorland House. It has - Positive atmosphere; is Always clean, there is a High standard of care offered. All staff are Pleasant - being the nurses, care staff, and all administration. Good mix of activities and care given. There is an open door policy which means a drop in visit
can be conducted at any time at all, which is a positive sign that care is consistent.

I have worked in the care sector since 1998 after completing my university studies. Initially working with Children in Care then I moved to working with older people and this is where my passion is. I have been part of the MHA team since February 2017 and worked at Queenswood in Nottingham first then moved to Moorland house 2018 and I love the home, residents and we are blessed to have a wonderful staff team. I am married to Bri and I have 2 sons Adam, Tim and 2 grandchildren Ophelia and Cosette and daughter in law Sophie. I live in Chesterfield and my interests are reading and watching dramas and movies this helps me to unwind. We recently adopted a dog (pug) called Alfie that we are trying unsuccessfully to train. I enjoy going on all types of holidays and spending time with my family and extended family.

I have been in the care industry for over 10 years now and worked in numerous care environments such as Residential, Assisted Living, Domiciliary and also training. Since the age of 21 I have always had a job role in a senior position. I have learnt a wide range of skills and knowledge in the care sector throughout the years, and I have always been passionate in providing the highest standards of person-centred care. The atmosphere is so warm and welcoming which to me, is what makes Moorland House so different to previous homes I have worked in. The staff team who I work alongside with are an absolute credit to the home and MHA as a whole. My favourite part of the job has always been interacting with the residents, hearing their individual stories or just simply seeing them smile. I have worked at Moorland House for over 2 years now and I’ve never been happier! Outside of work, I’m usually spending time with my 7 year old daughter and going on adventures together with our Labrador puppy, Harley.

I have worked at Moorland House in an administrative role for 17 years, being promoted to Administration Manager around 4 years ago. I am passionate about ensuring that residents and staff have the best possible experience of living and working at Moorland House. I think Moorland House is special, because we provide our residents with a ‘home’, not a Home. Our friendly family atmosphere is one of the first things that visitors to the home notice, and I am incredibly proud of that. Outside of work, I enjoy spending time with my grandchildren and walking in the beautiful local countryside with my two dogs, Nev and Aggie.

Job Title: Home Chaplain Joined: 2020

I started working here as a Chaplain in August 2020 and I had such a warm welcome from staff and residents. As part of my job role, I work alongside our amazingly talented Activity Coordinator getting involved in activities participating with residents and spending quality time with them all such as playing scrabble every Tuesday and also arts and crafts. I carry out a midweek service every Wednesday morning and also hold a prayer group every Friday morning. I am always available to talk to anyone, staff, residents, relatives as a listening ear. I spent over 20 years working for the NHS as a Pharmacy Technician in hospitals in London and Essex and more latterly at Sheffield Children’s Hospital. I am very involved at St. Thomas’ the local Anglican church where amongst other things I help lead the Home Bible Group for the older folk and help run ‘Young at Heart’ once a month where we get together for a cup of tea, a piece of cake and plenty of chat.
