Moorland House provides residential and short-stay care for up to 48 residents in a historic, character-filled home in the village of Hathersage, Derbyshire.

With a history dating back over 70 years as a care home—and longer still as a former manor house and school—Moorland House is a well-loved part of the local community. It’s just 100 yards from the high street and a three-minute walk from the train station, offering easy access for families and friends.

Bedrooms are all single and en-suite, with residents encouraged to bring personal items to make the space feel like home. Communal areas include comfortable lounges, a hair salon, lift access, and outdoor seating areas looking out to the surrounding countryside.

The gardens, complete with a summer house, host events throughout the year, including a popular summer fête and intergenerational gardening projects with local Cubs and Brownies. Indoors, activities include art classes, singalongs, quizzes, and reminiscence sessions, alongside visits from therapy dogs and chaplain-led discussions.

Meals are freshly prepared by an experienced team—including a head cook formerly of The Savoy—with weekly roasts, homemade soups, and baking sessions led by residents. Afternoon teas and personalised cakes add a special touch to everyday dining.

The love and care which my father received during his time at Moorland House were excellent. He was particularly complimentary about the food but I also know that he felt safe and looked after by everyone.

I stayed in Moorland House in November last year for 1 week and again on Boxing Day for 1 week and really enjoyed it. I have been here for 3 weeks and this experience has not been as good as before. The home seems understaffed and the carers are rushed off their feet and do not have the time to talk
which is what is needed by old people. They work very hard. I have not spoken to the manager who stays in her office. The admin assistant is very good.

Thank you for your review. We are very pleased that you returned to us for respite after staying with us during November and over Christmas. I’d like to reassure you that the staffing levels are appropriate for the amount of residents in the home. However, due to adverse weather conditions and some sickness we did utilise our resources by using all three managers at the home to work on the floor to assist with the mealtime experiences and activities. I am sorry that you did not have sight of me but I do try to make myself visible to residents and relatives and operate an open door policy should you ever need to visit me. We are pleased that you are still joining us for daycare and look forward to seeing you in the future.

My aunt lived at Moorland House for just over a year and in that time she received excellent care. Having been a very independent lady and previously a nurse herself, she was initially reluctant to receive assistance as she believed she didn't need any. The staff gently gained her trust and were able
to fully support her needs whilst continuing to encourage independence. The staff displayed kindness, compassion and always treated my aunt with dignity and respect. They always informed my mother of any changes and were always quick to access outside professionals such as the GP and district nurse when my aunt required it.


Although my aunt did not have a great appetite, meals always looked and smelt delicious, there was always fresh fruit, biscuits and snacks freely available and residents were offered cold and hot drinks throughout the day.


When visiting the home we always found it to be clean, tidy, free from offensive odours and we were always made to feel welcome.

Our family have nothing but praise for the way in which the staff at Moorland House have cared for mother/grandmother over the last two and a half years. Staff worked hard to help her to settle and she developed real friendships with the carers.
All of her needs were catered for throughout her time
in Moorland House and we were able to visit at any time we wished.
Communication with the home was always easy. All of the family enjoyed visiting her in the home, regularly commenting on how welcoming everyone was.
We have nothing but praise for the gentle, caring and supportive efforts of everyone we came into contact with in the home. We spent a lot of time with her over her final few days and it was obvious that there was a genuine concern for her welfare and we as a family felt very supported throughout.
The staff at Moorland House ensured that mum-in-law's last years were fuller than anything that we as a family could have managed to provide for her.

My father was in Moorland House for a month's respite care. We were extremely pleased with the care he received. All the staff were very friendly and pleasant and went out of their way to make him feel at home and us always welcome. All the staff I spoke to were always helpful and nothing was too much
trouble.


My 20 year old son commented on how all the staff he saw and spoke to, were always smiling and great with his grandad.


Everywhere was clean and spotless.


I would have no hesitation in recommending Moorland House to anyone.

My experience of Moorland House is satisfactory. I tend to keep to my room and the quiet lounges but join in at mealtimes and for the more educational events.
The staff cater for my needs and requirements but sometimes need reminding of arrangements such as baths.
Even with a noise policy, I have
to complain sometimes about the noise (usually television) from fellow residents nearby.

I was widowed on holiday in Australia, halfway through a two week holiday. I had 5 days to decide what to do and I made my own decision to come in here. I told my two daughters, who are now fifty-seven and fifty-six years old, one of them picked up a brochure and I was shown around the home, whilst
my daughter dealt with the finances. There were no smells of urine! All the furnishings were fresh and clean, the paintwork too. We were all very impressed within a week, I was here. The Methodist Minister visited me, though I'm Church of England. I was happy by the second morning as I'd been to our Christmas meal.

My mother was resident at Moorland House for 4 weeks respite care. Although she has now returned to her own home she received kind and considerate care during her stay. All of the staff involved were bright and cheerful and always willing to help. They responded to all requests for help and support
in a timely manner and mum has requested to remain on the waiting list should she wish to return.

My mother has been a resident for five years.
Overall the home is good, safe, warm, odour-free and staff are friendly and caring.
We have no concerns about mother's well-being beyond niggles about room cleaning and bed changing.
However, charges increase by about 5% every year for no evident improvements.

We are very fortunate in having such a high-quality home just across the road so that I am able to pop in and see my wife morning and afternoon.

After 2 1/2 years of excellent care in the home when Auntie reached the end of her life, the care she received was what everyone would hope for - amazing love, such tenderness and compassion. We were so grateful to know that she was in such caring hands when we couldn't be with her.

My elder daughter passed this home on the way to the opticians and called here to collect a brochure. So two of my sisters and both daughters read it through and we rung up and had an appointment for 3pm.
My daughters went to see the manager to arrange my finances. My two sisters and I were shown
around by a very nice carer (male). We were all very impressed by the furnishings, they were in good condition, no tattiness! No smell of urine!! The lounge was very nice, plenty of easy chairs etc.
There were several men snoring but that was early December 2016. There was a large TV but as I've been in here 1 year and 4 months we've had people come, different singers and also a zoo! But now there is not the money to pay for this, only £1,000! Which means that people with Alzheimer's can't make much conversation and are just left sitting there. The food is good too, nicely presented.

I have been a resident in Moorland House since I came here aged 90, I am now aged 100. I found it very strange at first but since I settled down I have been very happy here. The atmosphere is very good and the staff are a happy group and a great support.

I would say the greatest asset of Moorland House is the staff. They show warmth, care and kindness to the residents giving it a very homely feel. There is a positive and flexible attitude and the residents are always treated with the utmost respect. As a family member, I am made to feel very welcome
in the home and the staff always spare time to answer any questions I may have.

Moorland House for Mum and I provided an ideal solution at a difficult time.
Overall the standard of care was excellent, I cannot praise them enough.
The support for Mum and I was amazing.
We were welcomed into the home and experienced a very calming, friendly, warm environment.
Nothing was too
much trouble.
Mum's stay was unfortunately cut short as we were intending making respite permanent.
What a fabulous team.

I have been visiting this home for 12 years. My mother was a resident and now my mother in law is there and is very content. The staff are extremely helpful and cheerful - they know and care about all the residents.
The home is situated in a lovely Peak District village with numerous amenities and
spectacular views. Meals are home cooked and well thought out.

My father died recently having spent his last five months at Moorland House.


My family are so grateful to the all the staff at Moorland House for looking after my dad and all of us so well. All the staff – care staff, kitchen, cleaning, laundry and maintenance, admin staff – are kind, welcoming

and professional.


We all felt ‘at home’ coming to Moorland House. It is easy just to pop in at any time of day and share a meal, activity or simply spend quiet time together. The staff will always change their schedule to suit visitors and you always get offered a cup of tea or coffee.


During Dad’s last hours and following his death everyone has been so helpful and considerate – I still pop in to have a chat.

I have worked in the care sector since 1998 after completing my university studies. Initially working with Children in Care then I moved to working with older people and this is where my passion is. I have been part of the MHA team since February 2017 and worked at Queenswood in Nottingham first then moved to Moorland house 2018 and I love the home, residents and we are blessed to have a wonderful staff team. I am married to Bri and I have 2 sons Adam, Tim and 2 grandchildren Ophelia and Cosette and daughter in law Sophie. I live in Chesterfield and my interests are reading and watching dramas and movies this helps me to unwind. We recently adopted a dog (pug) called Alfie that we are trying unsuccessfully to train. I enjoy going on all types of holidays and spending time with my family and extended family.

Since the age of 21 I have always had a job role in a senior position. I have learnt a wide range of skills and knowledge in the care sector throughout the years, and I have always been passionate in providing the highest standards of person-centred care. The atmosphere is so warm and welcoming which to me, is what makes Moorland House so different to previous homes I have worked in. The staff team who I work alongside with are an absolute credit to the home and MHA as a whole. My favourite part of the job has always been interacting with the residents, hearing their individual stories or just simply seeing them smile. I have worked at Moorland House for over 2 years now and I’ve never been happier! Outside of work, I’m usually spending time with my 7 year old daughter and going on adventures together with our Labrador puppy, Harley.

I have worked at Moorland House in an administrative role for 17 years, being promoted to Administration Manager around 4 years ago. I am passionate about ensuring that residents and staff have the best possible experience of living and working at Moorland House. I think Moorland House is special, because we provide our residents with a ‘home’, not a Home. Our friendly family atmosphere is one of the first things that visitors to the home notice, and I am incredibly proud of that. Outside of work, I enjoy spending time with my grandchildren and walking in the beautiful local countryside with my two dogs, Nev and Aggie.

Job Title: Home Chaplain Joined: 2020

I started working here as a Chaplain in August 2020 and I had such a warm welcome from staff and residents. As part of my job role, I work alongside our amazingly talented Activity Coordinator getting involved in activities participating with residents and spending quality time with them all such as playing scrabble every Tuesday and also arts and crafts. I carry out a midweek service every Wednesday morning and also hold a prayer group every Friday morning. I am always available to talk to anyone, staff, residents, relatives as a listening ear. I spent over 20 years working for the NHS as a Pharmacy Technician in hospitals in London and Essex and more latterly at Sheffield Children’s Hospital. I am very involved at St. Thomas’ the local Anglican church where amongst other things I help lead the Home Bible Group for the older folk and help run ‘Young at Heart’ once a month where we get together for a cup of tea, a piece of cake and plenty of chat.
