In my view, Moorland House is excellent. The buildings are well-appointed and the gardens are nice. However, it is the staff which are the key. Both pre-Covid and during the current crisis, the staff have been determined to do a great job - they are kind, caring and compassionate. They know and clearly care for the residents. They are good at communicating with relatives and have done all they can in this very difficult time with, as far as I can see, very little help from the Government. I take my hat off to them. I am glad we selected this home for my mother. I really appreciate all you have done and will continue to do for my mother.

My spinster friend has been a resident for just over one year. She is now very fond of the staff who have become close to her and when time allows chat with her. I feel she looks on them in place of family. She is often "singing their praises" to me. I have found them to be caring, kind and when I have needed to ask questions or help them be aware of issues regarding my friend, they always listen and act upon information.
This friend is in a room with no view, which she has not been happy with in the past, but now that she has the possibility of a move does not want to change.
My friend, due to health issues will sometimes not join in the entertainment/activities provided, but when she does often enjoys them. She likes shared mealtimes.

During the lockdown, it has been extremely hard for the staff and residents, but the staff have worked really hard and the neighbours, Methodist church family and Minister, have been pleased to encourage them with the 8pm 'clap for carers'.

It is really appreciated that you have taken the time to review Moorland House and our staff. Your friend is very respected and thought of fondly with the residents at the home. She does enjoy the interaction at lunchtime, socialising with friends she has made here. She has a lovely nature and...

I was dreading putting my mother in a home, however, the great team at Moorlands made the transition really easy for her. She has been a resident for two years and without question, the staff have been so friendly and supportive, both to my mum but also us as visitors, making the whole process far better than I ever imagined it could be. The recent way the staff managed to contain and support the residents during Covid highlights how dedicated they all are. At times, the processes may be a little lax but to me, this is more than made up by the happy environment. Rooms and grounds are good and so is the food - testified to by the weight gain of my mum after losing so much before she was properly cared for.

Reply from Shirley Reece Johnson, Home Manager at Moorland House

I am so pleased that you have highlighted the difficulties that some residents may have when moving from their own environment to a new one. I and the care staff are pleased that for your mother this was a smooth transition. Your mother is a very likable and friendly person and she loves having a...

Well-appointed home. Pleasant gardens and easy access. Rooms vary but all are reasonable. Staff are very caring with huge doses of patience. They always seem very friendly and eager to assist when I visit. They are very knowledgeable of the residents.

My father decided to enter Moorlands House in early 2018 following on from a couple of trials/respite in the preceding two years. During his stay, I found that the general standards were very good. Specifically, the comfort, security and presentation, maintenance and cleanliness of the bedrooms was first class. Alongside which the programme of activities/entertainment was both sufficient and appropriate. However my main purpose in providing this review is to express my appreciation to each and every member of the team - it is not possible to express in words how truly superb they are - suffice it to say, they managed to combine consistently high standards whilst demonstrating wonderfully caring attitudes at all times. Thank you.

My mum has been living at Moorland House for two and a half years now and has settled in really well. This is in no small part due to the staff who have always been friendly, caring and supportive, they really do go the extra mile. This has meant that Mum feels this is her home not 'a home' and this is really important. The food is great, good quality and varied. As Mum is quite fit and active she is always keen to be involved in any activities or outside trips that are arranged, if anything there could be more provided in this respect. She loves the easy access into a big garden and the fact that she can walk easily into the village or to the local bowls club which is only a few hundred meters away and can even take slightly longer walks from the house down to a beautiful river. Her room has a nice view which she values highly. Overall though the home is made by the people, and the staff here have been wonderful in all respects.

My mother spent 5 weeks in Moorland House during March and April 2020, initially for respite care but Covid meant her stay was extended. During her time there the team were really good in looking after Mum - they appeared kind, caring and compassionate. Given the challenging circumstances in that we were unable to visit due to lockdown they were great at accepting the parcels that we delivered and always tried to take the phone to her when we all called her which was greatly appreciated. When she was taken ill the nursing team looked after her really well and kept us informed.

I stayed in Moorland House in November last year for 1 week and again on Boxing Day for 1 week and really enjoyed it. I have been here for 3 weeks and this experience has not been as good as before. The home seems understaffed and the carers are rushed off their feet and do not have the time to talk which is what is needed by old people. They work very hard. I have not spoken to the manager who stays in her office. The admin assistant is very good.

My aunt lived at Moorland House for just over a year and in that time she received excellent care. Having been a very independent lady and previously a nurse herself, she was initially reluctant to receive assistance as she believed she didn't need any. The staff gently gained her trust and were able to fully support her needs whilst continuing to encourage independence. The staff displayed kindness, compassion and always treated my aunt with dignity and respect. They always informed my mother of any changes and were always quick to access outside professionals such as the GP and district nurse when my aunt required it.

Although my aunt did not have a great appetite, meals always looked and smelt delicious, there was always fresh fruit, biscuits and snacks freely available and residents were offered cold and hot drinks throughout the day.

When visiting the home we always found it to be clean, tidy, free from offensive odours and we were always made to feel welcome.

Our family have nothing but praise for the way in which the staff at Moorland House have cared for mother/grandmother over the last two and a half years. Staff worked hard to help her to settle and she developed real friendships with the carers.
All of her needs were catered for throughout her time in Moorland House and we were able to visit at any time we wished.
Communication with the home was always easy. All of the family enjoyed visiting her in the home, regularly commenting on how welcoming everyone was.
We have nothing but praise for the gentle, caring and supportive efforts of everyone we came into contact with in the home. We spent a lot of time with her over her final few days and it was obvious that there was a genuine concern for her welfare and we as a family felt very supported throughout.

The staff at Moorland House ensured that mum-in-law's last years were fuller than anything that we as a family could have managed to provide for her.

Thank you so much for your review. Your Mother in Law was a wonderful person and everyone loved her. We all loved to listen to her stories from her younger days and that she had always been an inspiration to people throughout her life. She will be sadly missed.

My father was in Moorland House for a month's respite care. We were extremely pleased with the care he received. All the staff were very friendly and pleasant and went out of their way to make him feel at home and us always welcome. All the staff I spoke to were always helpful and nothing was too much trouble.

My 20 year old son commented on how all the staff he saw and spoke to, were always smiling and great with his grandad.

Everywhere was clean and spotless.

I would have no hesitation in recommending Moorland House to anyone.

My experience of Moorland House is satisfactory. I tend to keep to my room and the quiet lounges but join in at mealtimes and for the more educational events.
The staff cater for my needs and requirements but sometimes need reminding of arrangements such as baths.

Even with a noise policy, I have to complain sometimes about the noise (usually television) from fellow residents nearby.

I was widowed on holiday in Australia, halfway through a two week holiday. I had 5 days to decide what to do and I made my own decision to come in here. I told my two daughters, who are now fifty-seven and fifty-six years old, one of them picked up a brochure and I was shown around the home, whilst my daughter dealt with the finances. There were no smells of urine! All the furnishings were fresh and clean, the paintwork too. We were all very impressed within a week, I was here. The Methodist Minister visited me, though I'm Church of England. I was happy by the second morning as I'd been to our Christmas meal.

My mother was resident at Moorland House for 4 weeks respite care. Although she has now returned to her own home she received kind and considerate care during her stay. We are very fortunate in having such a high-quality home just across the road so that I am able to pop in and see my wife morning and afternoon.

I have worked at Moorland House in an administrative role for 17 years, being promoted to Administration Manager around 4 years ago. I am passionate about ensuring that residents and staff have the best possible experience of living and working at Moorland House. I think Moorland House is special, because we provide our residents with a ‘home’, not a Home. Our friendly family atmosphere is one of the first things that visitors to the home notice, and I am incredibly proud of that. Outside of work, I enjoy spending time with my grandchildren and walking in the beautiful local countryside with my two dogs, Nev and Aggie.
