Moorland House provides residential and short-stay care for up to 48 residents in a historic, character-filled home in the village of Hathersage, Derbyshire.

With a history dating back over 70 years as a care home—and longer still as a former manor house and school—Moorland House is a well-loved part of the local community. It’s just 100 yards from the high street and a three-minute walk from the train station, offering easy access for families and friends.

Bedrooms are all single and en-suite, with residents encouraged to bring personal items to make the space feel like home. Communal areas include comfortable lounges, a hair salon, lift access, and outdoor seating areas looking out to the surrounding countryside.

The gardens, complete with a summer house, host events throughout the year, including a popular summer fête and intergenerational gardening projects with local Cubs and Brownies. Indoors, activities include art classes, singalongs, quizzes, and reminiscence sessions, alongside visits from therapy dogs and chaplain-led discussions.

Meals are freshly prepared by an experienced team—including a head cook formerly of The Savoy—with weekly roasts, homemade soups, and baking sessions led by residents. Afternoon teas and personalised cakes add a special touch to everyday dining.

At Moorland House, care isn’t just about support, it’s about creating a community where residents thrive. Whether you’re searching for yourself or a loved one, for residential or short-stay care, the team at Moorland House are here to help.

My mother spent 5 weeks in Moorland House during March and April 2020, initially for respite care but Covid meant her stay was extended. During her time there the team were really good in looking after Mum - they appeared kind, caring and compassionate. Given the challenging circumstances in that
we were unable to visit due to lockdown they were great at accepting the parcels that we delivered and always tried to take the phone to her when we all called her which was greatly appreciated. When she was taken ill the nursing team looked after her really well and kept us informed.

I stayed in Moorland House in November last year for 1 week and again on Boxing Day for 1 week and really enjoyed it. I have been here for 3 weeks and this experience has not been as good as before. The home seems understaffed and the carers are rushed off their feet and do not have the time to talk
which is what is needed by old people. They work very hard. I have not spoken to the manager who stays in her office. The admin assistant is very good.

My aunt lived at Moorland House for just over a year and in that time she received excellent care. Having been a very independent lady and previously a nurse herself, she was initially reluctant to receive assistance as she believed she didn't need any. The staff gently gained her trust and were able
to fully support her needs whilst continuing to encourage independence. The staff displayed kindness, compassion and always treated my aunt with dignity and respect. They always informed my mother of any changes and were always quick to access outside professionals such as the GP and district nurse when my aunt required it.

Although my aunt did not have a great appetite, meals always looked and smelt delicious, there was always fresh fruit, biscuits and snacks freely available and residents were offered cold and hot drinks throughout the day.

When visiting the home we always found it to be clean, tidy, free from offensive odours and we were always made to feel welcome.

Our family have nothing but praise for the way in which the staff at Moorland House have cared for mother/grandmother over the last two and a half years. Staff worked hard to help her to settle and she developed real friendships with the carers.
All of her needs were catered for throughout her time
in Moorland House and we were able to visit at any time we wished.
Communication with the home was always easy. All of the family enjoyed visiting her in the home, regularly commenting on how welcoming everyone was.
We have nothing but praise for the gentle, caring and supportive efforts of everyone we came into contact with in the home. We spent a lot of time with her over her final few days and it was obvious that there was a genuine concern for her welfare and we as a family felt very supported throughout.
The staff at Moorland House ensured that mum-in-law's last years were fuller than anything that we as a family could have managed to provide for her.

My father was in Moorland House for a month's respite care. We were extremely pleased with the care he received. All the staff were very friendly and pleasant and went out of their way to make him feel at home and us always welcome. All the staff I spoke to were always helpful and nothing was too much
trouble.

My 20 year old son commented on how all the staff he saw and spoke to, were always smiling and great with his grandad.

Everywhere was clean and spotless.

I would have no hesitation in recommending Moorland House to anyone.

My experience of Moorland House is satisfactory. I tend to keep to my room and the quiet lounges but join in at mealtimes and for the more educational events.
The staff cater for my needs and requirements but sometimes need reminding of arrangements such as baths.
Even with a noise policy, I have
to complain sometimes about the noise (usually television) from fellow residents nearby.

I was widowed on holiday in Australia, halfway through a two week holiday. I had 5 days to decide what to do and I made my own decision to come in here. I told my two daughters, who are now fifty-seven and fifty-six years old, one of them picked up a brochure and I was shown around the home, whilst
my daughter dealt with the finances. There were no smells of urine! All the furnishings were fresh and clean, the paintwork too. We were all very impressed within a week, I was here. The Methodist Minister visited me, though I'm Church of England. I was happy by the second morning as I'd been to our Christmas meal.

My mother has been a resident for five years.
Overall the home is good, safe, warm, odour-free and staff are friendly and caring.
We have no concerns about mother's well-being beyond niggles about room cleaning and bed changing.
However, charges increase by about 5% every year for no evident improvements.

My elder daughter passed this home on the way to the opticians and called here to collect a brochure. So two of my sisters and both daughters read it through and we rung up and had an appointment for 3pm.
My daughters went to see the manager to arrange my finances. My two sisters and I were shown
around by a very nice carer (male). We were all very impressed by the furnishings, they were in good condition, no tattiness! No smell of urine!! The lounge was very nice, plenty of easy chairs etc.
There were several men snoring but that was early December 2016. There was a large TV but as I've been in here 1 year and 4 months we've had people come, different singers and also a zoo! But now there is not the money to pay for this, only £1,000! Which means that people with Alzheimer's can't make much conversation and are just left sitting there. The food is good too, nicely presented.

Current Review Score: 9.5 (9.523)

Overview of Review Score

The Review Score of 9.5 (9.523) out of 10 for Moorland House is based on a) the Average Rating and b) the number of positive Reviews.

  1. The Average Rating is 4.7 out of 5 from 9 Reviews in the last 24 months.
  2. The score for the number of positive Reviews is 4.8 out of 5 from 9 positive Reviews in the last 24 months.

Detailed Breakdown of Review Score

The maximum Review Score for a Care Home is 10, which is made up from the Average Rating of Reviews (maximum of 5 points) and the Number of Reviews (maximum of 5 points) in the last 24 months:

  1. 5 Points are available for the Average Rating from all Reviews in the last 24 months. The Average Rating of 4.685 for Moorland House is calculated as follows: ( (77 Excellents x 5) + (28 Goods x 4) + (3 Satisfactorys x 3) ) ÷ 108 Ratings = 4.685
  2. 5 Points are available for the number of Positive Reviews in the last 24 months. A Positive Review is defined as any Review with an 'Overall Experience' of '4' or '5' (out of a max rating '5'). The 4.838 Points relating to the number of positive Reviews for Moorland House is based on 9 positive Reviews in the last 24 months and is calculated as per below:

The 5 points available are broken down as follows:

    1. 4 points are available for the first 10 Positive Reviews in the last 24 months; 3 points for the first Positive Review, and then 0.125 Points for each of the next four Positive Reviews and then 0.1 Points for the next five Positive Reviews. (1st = 3.000, 2nd = 0.125, 3rd = 0.125, 4th = 0.125, 5th = 0.125, 6th = 0.100, 7th = 0.100, 8th = 0.100, 9th = 0.100, 10th = 0.100) 3 + 0.125 + 0.125 + 0.125 + 0.125 + 0.1 + 0.1 + 0.1 + 0.1 = 3.9
    2. 1 point is available for the number of Positive Reviews reaching 20% of the registered maximum number of service users in the last 24 months. If this number is partially reached, then that proportion of 1 point is given. eg a Care Home registered for a maximum of 50 service users has to reach 10 Positive Reviews to receive 1 point, if it has 7 reviews it will receive 0.7 points. 20% of the 48 registered maximum number of service users is 9.6. 9 Positive Reviews ÷ 9.6 = 0.938
  3. When a Review is submitted by someone who has previously submitted a Review, only the latest Review will count towards the Review Score.
  4. If a Care Home does not have a review in the last 24 months, then it will not have a Review Score.

I have worked at Moorland House in an administrative role for 17 years, being promoted to Administration Manager around 4 years ago. I am passionate about ensuring that residents and staff have the best possible experience of living and working at Moorland House. I think Moorland House is special, because we provide our residents with a ‘home’, not a Home. Our friendly family atmosphere is one of the first things that visitors to the home notice, and I am incredibly proud of that. Outside of work, I enjoy spending time with my grandchildren and walking in the beautiful local countryside with my two dogs, Nev and Aggie.

I carry out a midweek service every Wednesday morning and also hold a prayer group every Friday morning. I am always available to talk to anyone, staff, residents, relatives as a listening ear.
