Moorland House provides residential and short-stay care for up to 48 residents in a historic, character-filled home in the village of Hathersage, Derbyshire.

With a history dating back over 70 years as a care home—and longer still as a former manor house and school—Moorland House is a well-loved part of the local community. It’s just 100 yards from the high street and a three-minute walk from the train station, offering easy access for families and friends.

Bedrooms are all single and en-suite, with residents encouraged to bring personal items to make the space feel like home. Communal areas include comfortable lounges, a hair salon, lift access, and outdoor seating areas looking out to the surrounding countryside.

The gardens, complete with a summer house, host events throughout the year, including a popular summer fête and intergenerational gardening projects with local Cubs and Brownies. Indoors, activities include art classes, singalongs, quizzes, and reminiscence sessions, alongside visits from therapy dogs and chaplain-led discussions.

Meals are freshly prepared by an experienced team—including a head cook formerly of The Savoy—with weekly roasts, homemade soups, and baking sessions led by residents. Afternoon teas and personalised cakes add a special touch to everyday dining.

At Moorland House, care isn’t just about support, it’s about creating a community where residents thrive. Whether you’re searching for yourself or a loved one, for residential or short-stay care, the team at Moorland House are here to help.

My mother moved to Moorland House after having a bad fall and being hospitalised for some time. She was very distressed and didn’t want to move into a care home. The staff have been wonderful and have helped her recover. She now regards them as friends and feels very comfortable. She enjoys her meals
and has put on weight. She no longer wants to return to her home as she feels safe and well supported.
Reply from Shirley Reece Johnson, Home Manager at Moorland HouseThank you for the positive feedback you have given regarding your mum's stay at Moorland House. We were aware of the difficult transition from her own home to Moorland House was going to be and we are pleased that your mum feels settled and comfortable with the staff and friends that she has made. I feel that the contentment that she feels at the home has contributed to her much needed weight gain as she is socialising more and enjoys the choices of meals that are available. We will continue to provide the support and care that your mum requires and it is our pleasure to have her live with us and include her as part of the family at Moorland House.

My aunt is very happy at Moorland House. She has lived there several years and only has good things to say about the staff and the care she gets. She also says that she enjoys her meals. She has several serious health issues and was not well physically or mentally when she first went in. She is much
happier and her physical health is better than when she arrived despite her being a few years older.

My grandma came to Moorland House for respite, following a fall. She really enjoyed it. She joined in with all the groups, attended the weekly church service and even had her hair done every week. She made some good friends with both staff and residents. The care, food, and cleanliness were great. Thank
you so much for taking such good care of her.
Reply from Shirley Reece Johnson, Home Manager at Moorland HouseThank you for your positive comments following your grandma's stay at Moorland House. We had been caring for my mother for a number of years and she has a complex set of conditions. After a stay in hospital, it became evident we could no longer cope with her at home and she moved into Moorland House in October 2020. This was at the beginning of the second lock down which meant we couldn’t
visit her to see if she had settled in. Staff and management welcomed her in and took the time to get to know her, and her needs. It was a difficult time due to COVID restrictions stopping us from visiting. Video calls were arranged which helped us keep in touch.
Moorland House have a number of social activities within the care home which my mother has been taking part in especially the art classes and music, as we can see on social media. The atmosphere when you go in is always nice, Moorland House feels homely, not corporate. The staff are incredibly patient, kind and friendly with a good sense of humour. Couldn’t ask for anything more at her stage in life.
Reply from Shirley Reece Johnson, Home Manager at Moorland HouseThank you for your positive comments regarding the staff and facilities at Moorland House. It is always a joy to see your mother enjoying the activities and to capture these moments for you to be able to see via social media. Hope you have a lovely Christmas and New Year.

My mother-in-law was a strong independent octogenarian brought low by a sudden fall. She initially, and understandably, struggled to come to terms with moving permanently to a care home. The staff of Moorlands, with their unfailing patience and friendly but professional approach, helped her settle into
her new home which she now appreciates and, whisper it quietly, is starting to rather enjoy, This is a testament to the quality of care she receives. Well done to the team.
Reply from Shirley Reece Johnson, Home Manager at Moorland HouseIt is always nice when we manage to look after someone at Moorland House and then they are able to return back to their own home. However, whilst we did manage to help your mother-in-law return to her home, she decided herself that she needed to come back to Moorland House and we welcomed her. She is settling very well and has managed to come to terms with the transition in her life, which we acknowledge must have been difficult for her. I will pass on to all the staff the great compliments you have shared and wish you and your family a lovely Christmas and a prosperous New Year.

My dad moved to Moorland House as his health had deteriorated to the point it wasn't safe for him to be at home. His mobility has been very variable over the months he's been at Moorland House, but it's been very reassuring to have seen how well he's been looked after on his good days and his bad days.

All the staff are so friendly and have made him (and us) feel welcome. They've encouraged him to be as independent as is practical, and have worked really well with all the family to make his move to Moorland House work.
Reply from Shirley Reece Johnson, Home Manager at Moorland HouseThank you for your kind observations of Moorland House. Your dad is still very independent in a lot of his ways and we are pleased that the transition to Moorland House was made a smooth one. When any resident comes to the home we appreciate that this is difficult, not only for them but also the family, therefore we always strive to make relatives, friends and families feel welcome to the home. Hope you and your family have a lovely Christmas and New Year.

I am now able to visit my uncle again in Moorland House, in his room. The team facilitated the visit very well and their approach to dealing with the COVID pandemic since early 2020 has been excellent.
My uncle is well cared for and he is happy in MHA Moorland House. He specifically wanted an MHA facility
and he is happy with the choice we made.
The staff are always helpful and, as I live over 2 hours drive away, it is important to have a rapport with the carers so that any issues or accidents are discussed and dealt with professionally, which they are.
I and my family would thank the care team for their hard work, particularly since the onset of the COVID pandemic which has made the task especially difficult for the staff. Thank you.
Reply from Shirley Reece Johnson, Home Manager at Moorland HouseThank you for the time you took to acknowledge the hard work that staff do at Moorland House. We are pleased that your uncle still is enjoying living at the home - he is a real gentleman. We appreciate your comments on how we have handled the COVID situation and are happy that we are again able to facilitate visitors to the home albeit we still have to screen all of this, but we know how important it is for loved ones and our residents to spend quality time together. Have a lovely Christmas and New Year.

My aunt has lived in Moorland House for over 2 years. Although not in good health, she continues to be supported by the caring staff. I live 3 hours drive away and visit every 5-6 weeks. The staff are always welcoming when we visit.

My mother is cared for so well by the lovely team at Moorland House who go out of their way to look after her. She is settled and happy, raves about the food and has made some lovely friends. I'm delighted I can visit her in her room again and bring her out. I would highly recommend Moorland House and
am so glad Mummy moved there as she could no longer manage at home. During the pandemic, when visiting was not possible the staff were fantastic at arranging video calls. They have all been under so much pressure over the last 18 months but it never shows, they are always upbeat and welcoming.
Reply from Shirley Reece Johnson, Home Manager at Moorland HouseThank you for your kind words regarding the care that your mother receives at Moorland House; it goes without saying it is a pleasure. One of the good things that has come from the pandemic is that we all needed to find another way of communicating with loved ones and video calls are the way forward. As always, we will try and accommodate your visits as we appreciate how valuable they are to your mother and you. We wish you and your family a lovely Christmas and Happy New Year.

When we found out that my father had to go into a care home, we thought it would be difficult to find the right one. Moorland House has proven to be a fabulous ‘home from home’. From the first meeting to our final goodbyes, my father's care has been outstanding. Over the last 2-years, nothing has been
too much trouble. The staff often going above and beyond the call of duty, especially under the trying conditions of the Coronavirus pandemic.
Professional and empathetic their care has been genuine and heartfelt, and I (and my dad) wouldn’t hesitate to highly recommend their service. My family would really like to thank the whole team for their kindness and devotion throughout dads stay, and know that we made a perfect choice.
Reply from Shirley Reece Johnson, Home Manager at Moorland HouseThank you for your acknowledgement of Moorland House facilities as well as the appreciation that you and your father had for all the staff that supported him in the home. He will be sorely missed by staff and residents alike and we send you our sincere condolences.

My mother's care throughout her years at Moorland House has been excellent. All the staff really knew and understood her as a person, respecting her individuality and her wish to be as independent as possible. They are friendly, caring and compassionate for families as well as residents, and well
qualified and knowledgeable too. They try to keep events and celebrations going in Moorland House, to give residents a focus and enjoyment - particularly important when visits are difficult. They also have worked hard to enable contact and some visits once covid restrictions started to ease - that was a really difficult balance when the safety of residents and carers had to come first. My mother and I really appreciated our times together in the garden over the summer; they made all the difference for us. Moorland House is a home, and its friendly, homely atmosphere stands out.

My husband and I have been struggling with his Parkinson’s for some time now and following a fall requiring surgery we decided he needed a more protected environment and were lucky enough to get a room at Moorland House. Although Covid has prevented normal contact, meaning I haven’t even seen his room
properly, the staff have been very helpful and welcoming. The care is such that after a few weeks I see him looking better than he has for a long time which is a big relief to me. Part of this is due to the reliable administration of Parkinson's medication. I have never experienced less than patience, kindness and receptiveness to ideas from the Staff and appreciate all that you are doing to make my husband feel at Home and cared for with Professionalism especially in the context of the current Pandemic complications. N.b option choices completed without the benefit of being able to observe Care in action due to Covid.

My mother moved into Moorland House in July 2020, at a time of some difficulty for her and during lockdown. She now feels much more at home, but initially she found it hard to settle. Without the help and support of the staff we could not have achieved this, and I really feel that they have 'gone the
extra mile' to help and address her specific needs. The management is approachable and accessible. They discuss problems with us and together we have found creative solutions to Mum's problems under very difficult circumstances, including ways for the family to help support Mum. My mother is in a good place and she also recognises this. Although currently scaled back because of the virus, the programme of activities offered at Moorland House is still quite diverse and Mum has enjoyed and benefitted from them. Our overall experience is that Moorland House is a caring home, with committed and caring staff and management, who have been very supportive and sympathetic to Mum's needs.
Reply from Shirley Reece Johnson, Home Manager at Moorland HouseThank you for your acknowledgement relating to the support that your mum and your family have received from the staff and management at Moorland House. Mum has been in Moorland House for 12 years and she tells us that going there was one of the best decisions she ever made. Inevitably there have been a few bumps in the road over such a long time but that is only to be expected. She has been safe, warm, well fed and comfortable and I have always been
happy to know she was in safe hands despite my being 150 miles away. The staff are kind, respectful and considerate and do a remarkable job in often very difficult times. I greatly admire what they do for her. Unfortunately, as her closest relative, I have not been able to visit more than 10 times a year but have always been made welcome. Everyone's job has been made so much more difficult by Covid19 but Mum has nothing but praise for the way that the staff are coping with this impossibly difficult situation.
Reply from Shirley Reece Johnson, Home Manager at Moorland HouseYour mum has been one of the longest residents that we have welcomed at Moorland House, 12 years and counting. The staff at Moorland house have been excellent throughout the COVID period working hard to keep relatives in touch with residents and ensuring that the residents are looked after very well. The staff are very thoughtful and caring and have coped remarkably well with the undoubted strain of the current
pandemic. While it has been tough on residents and their relatives, I have been happy with the arrangements put in place to visit whenever the situation has allowed. My mother has remained cheerful and happy during this period which is a testament to the care she receives.

Lovely place, saving up to live there myself! Everything and everyone is friendly, clean and welcoming all the time. My mother chose to give up her own home to move there after my father died. She has lived at Moorland House almost 4 years now, and she feels it is definitely her home, not just where
she lives. As her physical condition has deteriorated over the past year her daily care from staff has increased but she is treated with fondness and kindness by all the staff, and we could visit anytime and take her out before the Covid 19 restrictions came in.

Mum has lived at Moorland House for almost four years. Staff are aware of how hard it is for many people to give up their home and move into care and they do everything possible to ease that. They respect Mum's preferences and routines. The environment is lovely and the activities programme outstanding
– varied and engaging. Mum loves the music events. Mum would still prefer to be fully independent but values the support of staff, given with love and good humour. They are caring, committed and compassionate. Staff and leaders are always accessible and responsive. It was important to Mum that family continued to be actively involved in her care and the staff have been exceptional in accommodating this wish. They have welcomed us not just as visitors but as full partners in Mum's care. It is a happy home with a strong sense of family and friendship among staff and residents. The staff have worked hard through the Covid crisis with great success, to keep Mum safe, healthy and happy.
Reply from Shirley Reece Johnson, Home Manager at Moorland HouseThank you for your time to review Moorland House, facilities and the staff; this is very much appreciated and I know that the staff will feel valued that their work and commitment has been recognised. It is imperative that we promote each and every resident's preferences and facilitate their routines so that they still feel in control of their choices. We recognise how important families are in decision making and aware that their support can help residents to settle into their new surroundings as well as being an advocate for them; this is welcomed. It has been a difficult time during the COVID-19 period for everyone, including families, but we will continue to support and find alternatives to solutions so that you can still maintain contact.

(1st = 3.000, 2nd = 0.125, 3rd = 0.125, 4th = 0.125, 5th = 0.125, 6th = 0.050, 7th = 0.050, 8th = 0.050, 9th = 0.050, 10th = 0.050, 11th = 0.025, 12th = 0.025, 13th = 0.025, 14th = 0.025, 15th = 0.025, 16th = 0.025, 17th = 0.025, 18th = 0.025, 19th = 0.025, 20th = 0.025) 3 + 0.125 + 0.125 + 0.125 + 0.125 + 0.05 + 0.05 + 0.05 + 0.05 + 0.05 + 0.025 + 0.025 = 3.8
    2. 1 point is available for the number of Positive Reviews reaching 20% of the registered maximum number of service users in the last 24 months. If this number is partially reached, then that proportion of 1 point is given. eg a Care Home registered for a maximum of 50 service users has to reach 10 Positive Reviews to receive 1 point, if it has 7 reviews it will receive 0.7 points. 20% of the 48 registered maximum number of service users is 9.6, which has been reached with 12 Positive reviews. Points = 1
  3. When a Review is submitted by someone who has previously submitted a Review, only the latest Review will count towards the Review Score.
  4. If a Care Home does not have a review in the last 24 months, then it will not have a Review Score.

Job Title: Administration Manager Joined: 2003

I have worked at Moorland House in an administrative role for 17 years, being promoted to Administration Manager around 4 years ago. I am passionate about ensuring that residents and staff have the best possible experience of living and working at Moorland House. I think Moorland House is special, because we provide our residents with a ‘home’, not a Home. Our friendly family atmosphere is one of the first things that visitors to the home notice, and I am incredibly proud of that. Outside of work, I enjoy spending time with my grandchildren and walking in the beautiful local countryside with my two dogs, Nev and Aggie.

Job Title: Home Chaplain Joined: 2020

I started working here as a Chaplain in August 2020 and I had such a warm welcome from staff and residents. As part of my job role, I work alongside our amazingly talented Activity Coordinator getting involved in activities participating with residents and spending quality time with them all such as playing scrabble every Tuesday and also arts and crafts. I carry out a midweek service every Wednesday morning and also hold a prayer group every Friday morning. I am always available to talk to anyone, staff, residents, relatives as a listening ear. I spent over 20 years working for the NHS as a Pharmacy Technician in hospitals in London and Essex and more latterly at Sheffield Children’s Hospital. I am very involved at St. Thomas’ the local Anglican church where amongst other things I help lead the Home Bible Group for the older folk and help run ‘Young at Heart’ once a month where we get together for a cup of tea, a piece of cake and plenty of chat.
