Highfields Care Home, Newark-on-Trent, Nottinghamshire

Surrounded by serene countryside to the north-east of Nottingham, Highfields is set amongst picturesque villages, on one and a half acres of grounds. The home offers residential, nursing, and palliative care. With a large conservatory opening out onto this rural beauty, and the blooms of the flowerbeds and greenhouse, peace and quiet is never far away. It's also just a short ride on the courtesy vehicle to the shops, pubs and churches of nearby Farnsfield.

The home has 45 rooms, 35 of which are en-suite, and four are companion rooms. There are three, open communal lounges, one private lounge and a well appointed dining room, all tastefully decorated to the highest standards - so you can be proud to call Highfields your home.

Chefs prepare a daily menu of tasty, nutritional meals which may be taken in the communal dining room or in bedrooms as preferred. Special dietary requirements can be accommodated.

A dedicated activities coordinator plans daily events in the home, as well as regular excursions beyond it. Residents and their families are encouraged to participate in the planning process to make sure everyone's needs and wants are being met.

Carers understand that moving into Highfields will be a considerable transition, but one they try to make feel as easy as possible. By helping you arrange your room just the way you like, or bringing you your daily newspaper, the staff at Highfields do the little things that make the biggest difference.

9.3 Highfields Care Home has a Review Score of 9.3 (9.257)

The Review Score of 9.3 (maximum of 10) for Highfields Care Home is based on a) the Average Rating and b) the number of positive Reviews.

  • a) The Average Rating is 4.7 out of 5 from 7 Reviews over all time. This Average Rating is also the rating value for Highfields Care Home in Google's Search Results - more info

  • b) The score for the number of positive Reviews is 4.5 out of 5 from 5 positive Reviews in the last 12 months.

  • a) 5 Points are available for the Average Rating of all Reviews over all time. For each review the Care Home / service is rated Excellent, Good, Satisfactory, Poor or Very Poor on a number of areas eg Staff, Management etc. The Care Home receives points for each rating as follows: Excellent = 5. Good = 4. Satisfactory = 3. Poor = 2. Very Poor = 1. These points are added up and then divided by the total number of completed ratings to generate the average rating.

    The Average Rating of 4.747 for Highfields Care Home is calculated as follows: ( (62 Excellents x 5) + (21 Goods x 4) ) ÷ 83 Ratings = 4.747

  • b) 5 Points are available for the number of Positive Reviews in the last 12 months. If there are no Positive Reviews in the last 12 months, then 2.5 points are available for the number of Positive Reviews in the last 2 years. A Positive Review is defined as any Review with 'Extremely Likely' or 'Likely' in answer to the question 'How likely are you to recommend this Care Home to friends and family if they needed similar care or treatment?'

The 5 points available are broken down as follows:

    1. 4 points are available for the first 5 Positive Reviews, 3 points for the first Positive Review and then 0.25 Points for each of the next 4 Positive Reviews.

    2. 1 point is available for reaching a target number of Positive Reviews based on 20% of the number of registered maximum number of service users. If the target is partially reached then that proportion of 1 point is given. eg a Care Home with 50 registered maximum number of service users has a target of 10 Positive Reviews, if it has 10 or more Positive Reviews it will receive 1 point, if it has 7 reviews will receive 0.7 points.

    3. If there are no Positive Reviews in the last 12 months, then 2.5 points are available for the number of Positive Reviews in the last 2 years. The calculation is the same as above, except the points are divided by 2.

The 4.51 Points relating to the number of positive Reviews for Highfields Care Home is based on 5 positive Reviews in the last 12 months and is calculated as follows:

    1. 3 + 0.25 + 0.25 + 0.25 + 0.25 = 4

    2. Target of 9.8 positive Reviews (49 registered maximum number of service users ÷ 5). 5 Reviews ÷ 9.8 Target = 0.510

  • When a Review is submitted by someone who has previously submitted a Review, only the latest Review will count towards the Review Score.

From the first day I visited Highfields with a view to my aunt moving here from her home of 58 years, I knew it was the right environment for her.

She moved here in May 2016 and loves the care home, all the staff and despite her great age, now nearly 108 years old, she is a positive and happy person who gives out warmth and thanks for the wonderful care she receives. The entertainments, the food, the comfort, and her fellow residents are part of this new life she has found for which we are all very grateful.

The care given to my husband during his stay at Highfields has been extremely good, by far the best care home he has stayed in, and he has been in 5 others in the Newark/Mansfield area. He seems to have settled in here and is as happy as his hallucinations and anxieties will allow him to be.

My only concern is that on occasions, he has been sitting in wet clothes and I feel he is not toiletted as often as I would like him to be, in view of the fact that a sensitive area does get quite painful and I feel the cream prescribed by the doctor is not applied often enough. Puzzled they don't have plate guards.

Annie Hall, Marketing Manager at Highfields Care Home responded to this review on 02 Oct 2017:

Thank you for your feedback, the team at Highfields welcome comments as we strive to continually improve our service.
We are delighted that your husband has settled so well. Since his arrival, it has been noted by all the team members here that there has been a marked improvement in his health and mood.
Occasionally residents with coordination challenges can spill liquids, leaving their clothes wet. In this context, we do try to make sure that clothes are kept as dry as possible whilst supporting individuals to remain as independent as possible. We take the comfort and well-being of residents very seriously and this includes ensuring regular and easy access to the bathroom. This help residents remain independent and comfortable at all times. In terms of medication, the dosage of any medication that has been prescribed is administered according to the prescription guidelines and is under constant review by both the care team and the doctor. As a home manager, I keep a close and careful eye on all our residents and I will continue to do so with your husband, ensuring he is always comfortable. I operate an open door policy, and if you have any further concerns, I would be happy to meet with you at your convenience.

Highfields invites you to visit unannounced - there is nothing to hide. My father was visited at home before admission and all efforts to know him and his needs were addressed. The staff really do care about all the residents and small individual preferences are respected. The building is not perfect but the layout means that residents do not sit in a circle staring at each other - it's laid out as "a home" as much as possible - and residents are encouraged to view it as their home.

All visitors are welcomed and offered refreshments with their family, the food is fresh, nutritious and good! Nobody wants to leave family members in a care home but I feel my father is as safe and cared for as he could possibly be.

My mother-in-law's brother was admitted to Highfields Care Home for end of life cancer care on the recommendation of his GP. I visited him several times and the care and respect he was shown was exemplary. I am a nurse myself and believe his experience could not have been better under the sad circumstances.
The rest of the family say they are very grateful to all the staff involved in his care.

My mother has been in Highfields for 14months, her care is excellent.
The staff are very professional and nothing is too much trouble, they are all very approachable, kind, caring and very supportive.
When I leave my mother I know she is cared for, which makes me and my family feel at ease.
I would recommend this caring home to anyone looking for a place for their parent.
