Wren Hall Nursing Home is a purpose-built accommodation linked to the original Wren House set in its own mature grounds of approximately two acres. It is situated at 234, Nottingham Road, Selston, a quiet village in Nottinghamshire, only a few minutes from Junction 27 on the M1 motorway.

Day to day running of the Home is led by the Registered Manager, who as a Registered General Nurse, works "Hands on" acting as role model team leader, mentor and friend. The Wren Hall team comprises a total of around sixty five persons dedicated to providing the highest quality of nursing care, twenty four hours per day, to all Residents.

Wren Hall is equipped with modern up-to-date facilities in accordance with the NHS and the National Care Standard Commission's guidelines. Wren Hall accommodates a community of forty-one Residents, who are elderly and frail and may be physically or mentally disabled, all of whom require nursing care.

The accommodation is laid out on two floors with eleven rooms on the ground floor and nineteen on the first floor. A passenger lift in the reception gives ready access to the upper floor.

Our Dad was cared for so wonderfully by the staff at Wren Hall for 7 and a half years. He was treated with respect and love the whole time, and when he was end of life, the care of not just Dad but also us as a family was amazing.

My general opinion and experience of Wren Hall is outstanding for the care, support and attention given to both me and my husband. Nothing is too much trouble, and their staff and management go the extra mile to make sure our respite journey is smooth and stress-free. Knowing my husband is cared for
and supported so well by Wren Hall staff gives me the confidence to enjoy and relax during his respite. Therefore, all benefit from the help of Wren Hall.

Lovely setting, nice garden, friendly, relaxed family home. Atmosphere is really nice, staff kind approachable, helpful and caring. I am so glad my mum is being cared for here she has a wonderful room for her many needs which are met as much as they possibly can be. We are so thankful mum is living
at Wren Hall now she can't live at home, giving us peace of mind.

I live in Devon and much of my communication about Mum is via Relatives Portal and telephone conversations. All staff are friendly and very helpful. On my visits to Wren Hall the whole team are very caring towards all residents and my Mum has developed some lovely relationships. Nothing is too much
trouble.
There are some activities which Mum really enjoys such as ball games and chair balloon batting. She really likes to be useful and enjoys activities like washing and drying some dishes. In her past she has been an accomplished flower arranger. It would be lovely if there were opportunities for her to do some of this.
She loves the company of young children and thoroughly enjoys seeing as well as spending time with them. She has always been very sociable and loves chatting. More opportunities to do so with residents or day care attendees would be greatly appreciated. This has been discussed with staff in the past, but not yet put in place.

Having heard good reports of Wren Hall, our family all agreed it would be the ideal home for my husband to be placed in after not a very good start in other homes. Generally, when we visit we are greeted with smiles and a good welcome. The staff are helpful and kind to my husband. I don't think he could
fare any better elsewhere.
He is being looked after very well and I would recommend this home to people with similar needs.

When faced with a difficult decision of how my mum's end of life care should be managed, a visit to Wren Hall and home visits by a senior member of staff reassured me that this was the right place for Mum's final weeks. From the cleaners to the maintenance team, from the cooks to the office staff, from
the carers to the incredibly skilled nurses, everyone we met over her 4 weeks was kind, caring and went the extra mile. When Mum entered her final day I wouldn't have changed a thing and Mum's passing was as beautiful as it could have been. The presence of the relative's room was completely invaluable. Thank you.

Wren Hall is friendly and welcoming. In Woodnook Lounge the staff work as a team, interacting well and setting the home for the lounge. When not involved in a specific task they will spend quality time sitting with a resident. Activities are provided and the residents are given the independence and
freedom commensurate with their needs. Personal care is discreet. Nursing and day-to-day care are of the highest standard. A visit is always a pleasure.

The family members and residents are cared for with much dignity and friendliness but in a very professional manner. The residence is kept very clean and tidy by excellent cleaners. The catering is perhaps a little inconsistent but the food is wholesome and varied. At about 3-month intervals family
members or friends are invited to have excellent special meals with their loved ones. There are lovely extensive gardens where family members can be taken around and can observe the trees and flowers. This home has a reputation of being the best for many miles around. No wonder it recently had a waiting list of 88!

My elderly mum and dad have been attending the day centre, once a week, for 12 weeks now. Dad has Alzheimer's and Mum was really struggling to be home alone with Dad 24 hours a day. Attending the day centre has really lifted Mum's spirits, she looks forward to it every week. The staff are absolutely
marvellous. They are very attentive, caring and considerate but also make their time here fun and happy. Dad always comes home smiling. I would certainly recommend it to anyone thinking of using this wonderful centre.

My first experience of Wren Hall began in May 2023 when my mother-in-law was a resident. She was so well looked after and was treated with care and compassion and was very happy from day 1 until she passed in December 2023. Now another chapter my mum is in Wren Hall and is being treated with the same
care, which is second to none. The nursing levels are first class, as Mum has leg issues with ulcers, we are informed of every decision made on Mum's behalf.

Mum has been attending Christine Bates Day Centre since December 2023 and she loves it. She initially started with one day a week and has currently increased to two days. The staff are great very warm and friendly. They really care, not just about the people attending the centre but also about the relatives,
it really is like being part of an extended family. The activities are always at the level of all attending the sessions. Keep up the good work and thank you, everyone.

My mother is obviously treated with respect and good attention. Her happy smile greets me every time I visit her and that says everything. All staff smile and greet every family member in Wren Hall every time they come into contact, confirming to a person with dementia that they are welcome and at home.

I moved my aunt from another care home to Wren Hall. The staff at Wren were all very helpful throughout and my aunt settled in very quickly, something I didn't expect as her dementia can make her unsettled in unfamiliar surroundings. I have been impressed with the amount of staff available for the residents
and how they have someone sit with them when they eat. The recording systems are excellent so we can trace things back if we need to.

Find the staff at Wren Nursing Home to be kind and caring to both family members, the clients, and to their relatives.
Feel included and welcome in Mum's care.
Mum's behaviour at times has been challenging. Noticed that the staff handle these situations professionally.
Appreciate the home helping
Mum get the continuing assessment to help with Mum's cost for care. I was included in the assessment.
Impressed that I can access Mum's care notes online. Feel this is transparent information Wren has made available.
Feel included in activities i.e bonfire night. Me and my family were impressed with the fireworks display and lovely food. Lovely to be able to celebrate with Mum with the support of the carers.
Carers have made a special effort in finding ways to help Mum feel calm. A life-like doll with a pushchair has been provided which has made Mum more contented.
Mum loves to wander. Carers make every effort to allow this.

My husband was diagnosed with young-onset dementia, finding the right nursing home for him was extremely important to me. The first time that I visited Wren Hall, it was to look around the Christine Bates Day Centre. I immediately knew this was the right place for my husband. It is clean, bright and
full of activities to enrich the lives of the people living there. My husband went on to use the respite facilities, I could rest at ease knowing that the staff would treat him with compassion, kindness and as an individual. Now he is a resident at Wren Hall, the transition was smooth and done with understanding and care. I feel very welcome when I visit. The garden is amazing and full of things to enhance people's experiences, including a play area for children, animals and various buildings; an ice cream parlour, a chapel, a pub and beach huts! I feel so happy that I found Wren Hall and would recommend it to anyone living with dementia.

Anita

Anita Astle MBE

Job Title: Registered Manager Joined: 1989

Anita is Registered Manager at Wren Hall Nursing Home.


She trained as a Registered General Nurse in 1984 at the Nottingham School of Nursing, University Hospital, Nottingham. Qualifying in 1987, Anita worked as a Staff Nurse in the Burns Unit at Nottingham City Hospital before moving to Basildon and Thurrock Health Authority to undertake the English National Board (ENB) full-time course in Burns and Plastic Surgery Nursing. Upon completion of this course, she returned to Nottingham City Hospital to work in the Intensive Care Unit. She worked on this unit for two years before leaving in 1990 to run Wren Hall Nursing Home on a full-time basis.


Anita has gained a wealth of experience relating to the Care of Older People in Nursing Homes; she has commissioned newly built homes, managed groups of homes, liaised with both Health Authorities and Local Authorities and represented the independent sector at a local, regional and national level. Anita has been a proactive member of the Nottinghamshire Care Homes Association since 1993, holding positions as Company Secretary, Chairman and Nurse Advisor. Through this role, Anita has worked at a strategic level with stakeholders to raise standards within care homes. Anita was a non-executive director of Ashfield Primary Care Trust for a period of 5 years. Anita currently sits on the Board for Skills for Care and is the Regional Chair for the East Midlands Region.


In 2001, Anita completed a BSc (Hons) degree in Nursing and gained the English National Board (ENB) Higher Award as an Advanced Nurse Practitioner. Anita also holds NVQ level 5 in Operational Management. Anita completed the Dementia Care Mapping Course in January 2009 and she gained the qualification for Advanced Dementia Care Mapper in November 2009. Anita is currently working towards gaining a Masters with Nottingham Trent University.


Between 2012 and 2015 Anita worked 3 days a fortnight, for the Community Programme – a transformational team based at Nottingham City Hospital where she was Organisational Development Lead improving leadership, knowledge and skills within Care Homes across Nottingham/shire.


Anita was awarded the MBE in the New Year’s Honours list 2014 for 'services to older people'.
Anita has a real passion for quality care, workforce development and improving Dementia care.
Anita has had responsibility for the day-to-day management of Wren Hall Nursing Home for the past Thirty years and has loved every second of it!
