Wren Hall Nursing Home is a purpose-built accommodation linked to the original Wren House set in its own mature grounds of approximately two acres. It is situated at 234, Nottingham Road, Selston, a quiet village in Nottinghamshire, only a few minutes from Junction 27 on the M1 motorway.

Day to day running of the Home is led by the Registered Manager, who as a Registered General Nurse, works "Hands on" acting as role model team leader, mentor and friend. The Wren Hall team comprises a total of around sixty five persons dedicated to providing the highest quality of nursing care, twenty four hours per day, to all Residents.

Wren Hall is equipped with modern up-to-date facilities in accordance with the NHS and the National Care Standard Commission's guidelines. Wren Hall accommodates a community of forty-one Residents, who are elderly and frail and may be physically or mentally disabled, all of whom require nursing care.

The accommodation is laid out on two floors with eleven rooms on the ground floor and nineteen on the first floor. A passenger lift in the reception gives ready access to the upper floor.

Wren Hall is a care home with exceptional standards. We can not believe how lucky we were to have found it. Every aspect of the care Mum receives and the management side for relatives is professional, over and above with special emphasis on caring.

My husband went into Wren Hall for 2 weeks respite on 9th March 2020 just as Covid struck. Unfortunately, I had to go into isolation so he had to stay on, as I thought, temporarily. It later had to become permanent. I can only say, that if I had had years to look over other care homes, I could not have
chosen better. The staff are incredibly caring while their professionalism is outstanding. The efforts to keep us involved with our loved ones over the past 22 hard months, through window visits, video calls and the online platform gave us at least a glimpse into their new lives. This was at a time when the staff were experiencing unbelievably harrowing and traumatic events themselves while dealing with family who had Covid. Thank you Wren Hall Staff. You are incredible!

Wren Hall provided palliative care for our dad, who passed away on Christmas Eve 2021.
The care Dad received at Wren Hall was exceptional, Dad was kept as comfortable as possible whilst we as a family were also treated with so much genuine compassion. Watching them care for Dad during those last days
was a moving and honestly humbling experience and we cannot praise the staff enough.

Wren Hall provides exceptional care for my mum and support for families.
I have 100% confidence in Wren Hall. After moving Mum to Wren Hall from another home we saw a massive improvement in Mum's health and well-being. Sedative medication was now rarely needed as Mum was calm, engaged and happy with

My mother has been in Wren Hall since June 2020, following the sudden death of my father, who cared for her. Although reluctant to put her in a home, her advanced Motor Neurone disease meant she needed 24-hour care and although we tried to care for her initially while we all dealt with bereavement,
we were advised to find a suitable nursing home. Wren Hall came strongly recommended, even then we were worried, feeling that we had “abandoned” her to some extent and that she needed her family most. We shouldn’t have worried. Despite dealing with everything Covid-19 has thrown at them, the manager and the staff have gone beyond our expectations, providing an extremely high standard of nursing care, but more importantly, a seemingly never-ending amount of kindness and patience. Despite my mother being given only a few months to live, she is still there after a year, surely a testament to the high level of care she gets. We are so lucky to have her there. Wren Hall is my husband's third care home. The 3 year wait for a place was, in the end, worth it. All sections of the care provided demonstrate a high standard, putting the residents first. The lockdown had a devastating effect on the home, but when I contacted staff for any reason, staff always presented
a positive front to me, even though I knew what they were up against.

Wren Hall is a wonderful, caring and loving environment. Despite the Covid lockdown, we have been able to access daily updates on how mum is doing and the staff are always on hand to facilitate Facetime calls. The wonderful staff have also dealt with mum's challenging behaviour with understanding and
patience, working through the various ways in which mum might be entertained, distracted or pacified (depending on her mood). In previous residential care settings, the emphasis was on controlling mum through drugs and by constraining her choices. At Wren Hall, they have worked with us as a family, and with the GP, to get mum off the medication and provide more therapeutic support. At Wren Hall, mum is allowed the freedom, choice and space to be herself but in an environment that is supportive and safe. We really couldn't find a better home and family environment for her (and we have tried)! I would thoroughly recommend it.

Mum came to live at Wren Hall during Covid, so it has been extremely difficult as a family not being able to look around the home and get a feel of it. I was allowed in once to personalise her room but she has since moved rooms. The staff appear to be very kind, communication could be better around
visiting and the first update email came just before the email request to put a review on which could have been a coincidence. The relative's gateway is a godsend but can be difficult to understand and at times and very repetitive. On the whole, it appears to be a good home with kind and caring staff who seem to have genuine affection for the people they care for, but the separation from our mum and limited visit due to the pandemic has been difficult, to say the least. I will rate the home as good in all areas due to the fact we actually don’t really know.

My dad was diagnosed as end of life in hospital and needs a lot of care. He had a bad experience with a previous care home he was in for respite. Everyone recommended Wren Hall to me and I can see why. The care he has received is first class and the staff are also very friendly. We have also noticed
how the staff engage with other residents and they are so caring and patient. I feel a lot happier knowing he is getting the care he needs at a very difficult time. My dad is always clean and comfortable, his room is always spotless. He says he enjoys the food. The staff have obviously been well selected and trained.

The staff make this nursing home excellent, from cooks, cleaners to directors and all those in-between. The only problem is lack of visiting which is not Wren Hall's fault - the government have moved the goal posts many times and this place has bent over backwards to accommodate 5 visitors for each
resident - they even built an extra garden room. The grounds are lovely but the care of all staff is exemplary.

Dad was transferred from hospital just before Christmas. Because of covid restrictions dad had to isolate for 2 weeks. He was still very frail when he arrived but a video call was arranged to reassure both dad and myself. Dad's physical and mental health improved rapidly. I rang up regularly with different
questions which I suspect many relatives have about care and dad's wellbeing. I also learnt to use the relative's gateway which means I never feel isolated from dad's care. I can check what kind of a day dad is having when I sit down for a cup of tea. I now visit weekly and always feel welcome by the staff. Dad is now making friends and doing activities he has not done for years. Dad is still frail but I now recognise more of his personality that makes him my dad. Dad sometimes has falls or gets upset, this is always recorded and care given. Nurses call to update me if I need to know anything about dad's care. Everything is explained to me including changes to dad's treatment and care.

When my mum got diagnosed with dementia it was the most devastating time of our lives. Nobody gives you a book to know what to expect or do, unfortunately, my mum couldn’t look after herself any longer. So I got in touch with Wren Hall and with their support and kindness I felt a weight had been lifted
off my shoulders. My mum has now been a family member at Wren Hall for three years now and the care she receives is exceptional!

Staff are patient and caring towards my mother who displays challenging behaviours at times linked to her Alzheimer’s diagnosis. My mother (68) was placed here under continuing health care as she was in end-stage heart failure. We were blown away with the service provided and would highly recommend this establishment.
The staff cannot do enough for the residents and you can tell that it is not just a job to them. Nothing was
too much trouble and if they could make something happen, they would. When my mother said to the staff that she wanted to go to the seaside again before she passed away (she was bed-bound and too ill to leave her bed) the home set up a video screen showing the sea crashing in on a beach and served her fish and chips.
As a family, we will never forget the care, compassion, love and dignity provided to my mother during her stay there. When my mother was admitted to the home we were told that her life expectancy was nine weeks maximum but due to the quality of care provided she lasted fourteen weeks.

Anita

Anita Astle MBE

Job Title: Registered Manager Joined: 1989

Anita is Registered Manager at Wren Hall Nursing Home.


She trained as a Registered General Nurse in 1984 at the Nottingham School of Nursing, University Hospital, Nottingham. Qualifying in 1987, Anita worked as a Staff Nurse in the Burns Unit at Nottingham City Hospital before moving to Basildon and Thurrock Health Authority to undertake the English National Board (ENB) full-time course in Burns and Plastic Surgery Nursing. Upon completion of this course, she returned to Nottingham City Hospital to work in the Intensive Care Unit. She worked on this unit for two years before leaving in 1990 to run Wren Hall Nursing Home on a full-time basis.


Anita has gained a wealth of experience relating to the Care of Older People in Nursing Homes; she has commissioned newly built homes, managed groups of homes, liaised with both Health Authorities and Local Authorities and represented the independent sector at a local, regional and national level. Anita has been a proactive member of the Nottinghamshire Care Homes Association since 1993, holding positions as Company Secretary, Chairman and Nurse Advisor. Through this role, Anita has worked at a strategic level with stakeholders to raise standards within care homes. Anita was a non-executive director of Ashfield Primary Care Trust for a period of 5 years. Anita currently sits on the Board for Skills for Care and is the Regional Chair for the East Midlands Region.


In 2001, Anita completed a BSc (Hons) degree in Nursing and gained the English National Board (ENB) Higher Award as an Advanced Nurse Practitioner. Anita also holds NVQ level 5 in Operational Management. Anita completed the Dementia Care Mapping Course in January 2009 and she gained the qualification for Advanced Dementia Care Mapper in November 2009. Anita is currently working towards gaining a Masters with Nottingham Trent University.


Between 2012 and 2015 Anita worked 3 days a fortnight, for the Community Programme – a transformational team based at Nottingham City Hospital where she was Organisational Development Lead improving leadership, knowledge and skills within Care Homes across Nottingham/shire.


Anita was awarded the MBE in the New Year’s Honours list 2014 for 'services to older people'.
Anita has a real passion for quality care, workforce development and improving Dementia care.
Anita has had responsibility for the day-to-day management of Wren Hall Nursing Home for the past Thirty years and has loved every second of it!
