Wren Hall Nursing Home is a purpose-built accommodation linked to the original Wren House set in its own mature grounds of approximately two acres. It is situated at 234, Nottingham Road, Selston, a quiet village in Nottinghamshire, only a few minutes from Junction 27 on the M1 motorway.

Day to day running of the Home is led by the Registered Manager, who as a Registered General Nurse, works "Hands on" acting as role model team leader, mentor and friend. The Wren Hall team comprises a total of around sixty five persons dedicated to providing the highest quality of nursing care, twenty four hours per day, to all Residents.

Wren Hall is equipped with modern up-to-date facilities in accordance with the NHS and the National Care Standard Commission's guidelines. Wren Hall accommodates a community of forty-one Residents, who are elderly and frail and may be physically or mentally disabled, all of whom require nursing care.

The accommodation is laid out on two floors with eleven rooms on the ground floor and nineteen on the first floor. A passenger lift in the reception gives ready access to the upper floor.

My wife is cared for at Wren Hall. She is cared for on a daycare basis and has also been residential on respite. My wife has always been happy and contented during her attendance. We considered at all times that she is safe and well cared for.

Wren Hall made the transition from my parent's first care home to Wren Hall very easy. My parents have been treated with respect, kindness and compassion since their arrival. My mum likes to be busy and is provided with opportunities to take part in activities on an almost daily basis. I am unable to
visit as often as I'd like, but the relative's portal means I can access what they are doing daily. The staff are always available to answer any queries or concerns I might have. I am extremely happy with their care.

Our experience with Wren Hall Nursing Home is brilliant. They really care for each individual in Woodnock with dignity well-being and such love for everyone. Dealing with a room of staff I find them to be so caring and helpful no problem was too small. On the management side when my dad was at the end
of life nothing but care and love from everyone.

Mum has amazing care and support at all times.
There is always a good ratio of staff to residents in the different lounges and they are always interactive.

My mum came into Wren Hall in August on a 12-week fast track end-of-life care. Two days later she was out of bed, showered and in the salon having her hair done. The care and love afforded to her is amazing. She has gained weight, eats all sorts of food, enjoys different activities and really enjoys

My sister is really well cared for and happy at Wren Hall Nursing Home. The staff are welcoming and friendly and after living alone for over 20 years she really enjoys the company, tasty meals and all the help with personal care that she was beginning to find difficult to manage.
Our brother was previously
a resident at Wren years ago and after visiting him here she expressed the wish that if she ever needed to move into a care home this would be her choice.

The staff at Wren Hall Nursing Home clearly care deeply about the residents of the care home, and as a relative, I never have any concerns that my father is well looked after and shown respect and affection, despite him having very challenging behaviour.
I would give 5 stars but feel that the communication
from the head office could be better. This is becoming less important as we are allowed back into the home (only very recently have restrictions eased) but during Covid was a source of constant frustration where we very much felt out of the loop.
That said, it was a comfort to know he was in safe hands during a time when we were unable to see/speak to him.

We have some admin staff who like myself were working covering care and nursing staff who were isolating having tested positive. We did not have spare staff to keep updating relatives so I added my personal mobile number to all correspondence and invited relatives to contact me at any time. My husband is well looked after and loved. The staff is lovely and very welcoming. The food is very good and my husband likes the sweet shop. He is always clean and tidy. Would like to see our loved ones going out a bit more.

As you know Covid-19 took its toll on care homes and outings were not viewed as safe. We were taking our family members out in summer but as winter nears and Covid-19 rates increase we are reluctant to do this.
Our activities are far more than going out and we have an amazing garden where our tearoom, church, beach feature and chickens provide many hours of engagement. We are setting up one cabin as a pub and revamping our miniature golf feature. Our sunroom is being added too so it can be used as a sensory (Namaste) lounge with aromatherapy too. Inside we offer activities such as baking, card and board games, quizzes, crosswords, crafts, household activities, musical activities and so much more. If you wish for your loved one to participate in more activities, please liaise with our staff and we will happily facilitate this.

In general, the care my grandmother has received has been excellent and the staff are excellent.
However, during Covid, the facilities haven’t been there and some of the visiting rooms and situations have not been great. At certain times common sense hasn’t been used and forward planning hasn’t been
very efficient.
But overall we are happy.

My mum has terminal dementia, she does not speak or really make any movement, most of the time her eyes are tightly shut. In the month prior to the start of the pandemic I transferred her from another care home in the South-East, it was part of a large chain, and Mum was just a number. I am so glad
I did, since moving her to Wren Hall I feel that she is cared for as a whole person. The pandemic took hold and I was not able to visit her for eighteen months. I was able to follow her care on the internet and speak to staff when I need to. I feel that the staff go above and beyond their roles to ensure the Wren Hall family enjoy life as much as is possible in these strange times. I would recommend Wren Hall to anyone who is looking for a care home for their loved ones.

My husband went into Wren Hall for 2 weeks respite on 9th March 2020 just as Covid struck. Unfortunately, I had to go into isolation so he had to stay on, as I thought, temporarily. It later had to become permanent. I can only say, that if I had had years to look over other care homes, I could not have
chosen better. The staff are incredibly caring while their professionalism is outstanding. The efforts to keep us involved with our loved ones over the past 22 hard months, through window visits, video calls and the online platform gave us at least a glimpse into their new lives. This was at a time when the staff were experiencing unbelievably harrowing and traumatic events themselves while dealing with family who had Covid. Thank you Wren Hall Staff. You are incredible!

I am sure that you are aware that we offer a wide range of activities such as daily household chores - dusting, cleaning, polishing brasses, baking, gardening, washing up, pairing socks etc. We sing, dance, paint, knit, sew. We offer intergenerational activities with our nursery children and school and college students who visit. Some activities are complete activities eg baking cakes and others are sensory activities such as tasting or feeling textures of items. The type of activity depends on the ability of each family member (resident). We know and support your wife to dance and sing, which she enjoys. However, should you believe we can offer her more, please let us know what you would like to see?

Anita

Anita Astle MBE

Job Title: Registered Manager Joined: 1989

Anita is Registered Manager at Wren Hall Nursing Home.


She trained as a Registered General Nurse in 1984 at the Nottingham School of Nursing, University Hospital, Nottingham. Qualifying in 1987, Anita worked as a Staff Nurse in the Burns Unit at Nottingham City Hospital before moving to Basildon and Thurrock Health Authority to undertake the English National Board (ENB) full-time course in Burns and Plastic Surgery Nursing. Upon completion of this course, she returned to Nottingham City Hospital to work in the Intensive Care Unit. She worked on this unit for two years before leaving in 1990 to run Wren Hall Nursing Home on a full-time basis.


Anita has gained a wealth of experience relating to the Care of Older People in Nursing Homes; she has commissioned newly built homes, managed groups of homes, liaised with both Health Authorities and Local Authorities and represented the independent sector at a local, regional and national level. Anita has been a proactive member of the Nottinghamshire Care Homes Association since 1993, holding positions as Company Secretary, Chairman and Nurse Advisor. Through this role, Anita has worked at a strategic level with stakeholders to raise standards within care homes. Anita was a non-executive director of Ashfield Primary Care Trust for a period of 5 years. Anita currently sits on the Board for Skills for Care and is the Regional Chair for the East Midlands Region.


In 2001, Anita completed a BSc (Hons) degree in Nursing and gained the English National Board (ENB) Higher Award as an Advanced Nurse Practitioner. Anita also holds NVQ level 5 in Operational Management. Anita completed the Dementia Care Mapping Course in January 2009 and she gained the qualification for Advanced Dementia Care Mapper in November 2009. Anita is currently working towards gaining a Masters with Nottingham Trent University.


Between 2012 and 2015 Anita worked 3 days a fortnight, for the Community Programme – a transformational team based at Nottingham City Hospital where she was Organisational Development Lead improving leadership, knowledge and skills within Care Homes across Nottingham/shire.


Anita was awarded the MBE in the New Year’s Honours list 2014 for 'services to older people'.
Anita has a real passion for quality care, workforce development and improving Dementia care.
Anita has had responsibility for the day-to-day management of Wren Hall Nursing Home for the past Thirty years and has loved every second of it!
