Overall Experience

My husband spent two weeks of respite in ShawSide - Beech House in October 2023. When his Alzheimer's became too much for me to handle, I had no worries about making ShawSide his home. When we arrived on the day he moved, he said, "Great, I'm back with my friends". The staff have been unbelievable with him, helping him settle and with me, helping me cope with the decision I have made.

Reply from Management Team, Beech House Management at Royton House

Today stayed in my room till 3pm. Came out to watch TV in the lounge. I got the remote off the mantelpiece to see what channel was on, as I wanted to watch England rugby. Anyway, it was on the right channel.

So I wheelchaired myself to a chair, sat in it and put the remote on the table. Within 20 the senior care assistant came and took the remote into the office. When the programme ended I went and asked for the remote and she refused to give it to me. So all in the lounge had no choice but to watch the same channel all night. The woman is new to the Royton I think the first time she has been in charge on her own.

Reply from Llewellyn Ramos, Co-Ceo at Royton House
Dear J W
I want to sincerely apologize for the inconvenience and frustration you experienced during your recent visit to our lounge. I am truly sorry to hear about the issue with the remote control and the impact it had on your ability to enjoy the England rugby match.

This situation is certainly...

My dad spent around two months is Shawside House. As far as I could see, he was very well looked after by the staff. He constantly told us how nice company they all were.
I'd particularly like to compliment the charge nurse in Shawside House, who, whenever I enquired, greatly impressed me with their detailed knowledge of his care.

Thank you all!

Review from Ruth L (Partner of Resident) published on 18 October 2022 Submitted via Postal Card
Overall Experience

My partner has been in ShawSide for 18 months, and there have been a number of issues which led to our daughter and I making an official complaint. I now deal with his washing, shaving and nail trimming and help feed him twice a day. Whilst the staff try their best there are insufficient staff to cope with the tasks. Yesterday not only did I help feed my partner, but I also helped feed other residents. I also have to take my partner to the toilet on occasion. He is unable to speak/wheelchair bound.

Reply from Barbara Cameron, General Manager at Royton House

I am sorry to hear of your concerns regarding your partner. Following this notification, myself and the unit manager met with you to clarify the full details of your concerns which we have taken very seriously, and as a result, we have instigated a full investigation. As per our recent...

Father was a resident on the Beech for the last three years until his death. He was happy with the standard of care he received, together with the quality and quantity of the food. Throughout his time there, I was genuinely impressed with the attitude and professionalism of the staff. They supported him as his Alzheimer's got worse and were always positive. I visited on different days and at different times; it did not matter whenever I was there; he was clean, clean-shaven, wearing clean clothes and looked comfortable. My sister and I cannot praise the staff on the Beech highly enough.

Review from Jill M (Daughter of Resident) published on 12 October 2021 Submitted via Website
Overall Experience

The care my mum received was abysmal. The care assessment stated mum should not be able to walk without a member of staff. She had three falls in one week ending up in hospital with a fractured hip and needing surgery. No manager has contacted me to ask how mum is. They also told me that family met with her GP and stopped her medication which is a lie. I contacted her GP and they had no record of this because her meds are for heart failure. I asked one of the managers on Shaw House to look at mums legs because they are very swollen. When I saw the manager a couple of days later she told me she had forgotten. They have few staff but at break times I never saw them sat with the residents. Instead, they are just sat at tables on their mobile phones. I would not put a dog in there but good luck should you choose to place your loved ones in there.

Reply from Molly Lennard, Executive Assistant at Royton House

Hi Jill, we’re incredibly sorry to hear of your mum's experience – this is certainly not reflective of the high standard of care we strive to offer at Shawside. If you could please contact us on info@bloomcare.co.uk we would appreciate the opportunity to be able to look into this further for you. Thank you for taking the time to provide your feedback.

This review is related to the summer garden fete - remarkably, the afternoon was fine weather, this made the day, and the event was well attended. The whole of the fair was very well organised and had many and varied attractions. My wife enjoyed the day, and it was the first time I'd seen her smile for a long time.

My mother has been at the home for four years. Mum had a massive stroke, and fortunately for the family, she survived. Mum would have been prepared to die and wishes she had. Unfortunately, the stroke left Mum unable to do many things that she was able to do, which frustrates her. Mum feels she is a burden to the staff, and therefore, reluctant to ask for help when she should. The number of agency staff whose first language is not English frustrates her as they don't appear to understand her requests. Also, as she eats in her room, her food is, as she would say, "tepid" not very warm.

My mum is here due to end of life care. She is being treated with dignity and respect. She says she enjoys the food, staff and facilities. On my side, I do feel ShowSide are understaffed. Even though they are understaffed, they work very hard to make the residents feel safe, comfortable and try to provide a happy environment.

The care was fine. Brother seems to do well in the home. He was a resident for almost 11-years. He would go to the day room and smoke room. When he first went to the home, he used to ask when he was going home, then he got to know it was his home and stopped asking. Overall, I think he was there.
