The Review Score of 8.9 (maximum of 10) for St Nicholas Care Home is based on a) the Average Rating and b) the number of positive Reviews.

  • a) The Average Rating is 4.3 out of 5 from 22 Reviews over all time. This Average Rating is also the rating value for St Nicholas Care Home in Google's Search Results - more info

  • b) The score for the number of positive Reviews is 4.6 out of 5 from 22 positive Reviews in the last 12 months.

Detailed Breakdown

  • a) 5 Points are available for the Average Rating of all Reviews over all time. For each review the Care Home / service is rated Excellent, Good, Satisfactory, Poor or Very Poor on a number of areas eg Staff, Management etc. The Care Home receives points for each rating as follows: Excellent = 5. Good = 4. Satisfactory = 3. Poor = 2. Very Poor = 1. These points are added up and then divided by the total number of completed ratings to generate the average rating.

    The Average Rating of 4.281 for St Nicholas Care Home is calculated as follows: ( (112 Excellents x 5) + (112 Goods x 4) + (26 Satisfactorys x 3) + (4 Poors x 2) + (2 Very Poors x 1) ) ÷ 256 Ratings = 4.281

  • b) 5 Points are available for the number of Positive Reviews in the last 12 months. If there are no Positive Reviews in the last 12 months, then 2.5 points are available for the number of Positive Reviews in the last 2 years. A Positive Review is defined as any Review with 'Extremely Likely' or 'Likely' in answer to the question 'How likely are you to recommend this Care Home to friends and family if they needed similar care or treatment?'

The 5 points available are broken down as follows:

    1. 4 points are available for the first 5 Positive Reviews, 3 points for the first Positive Review and then 0.25 Points for each of the next 4 Positive Reviews.

    2. 1 point is available for reaching a target number of Positive Reviews based on 20% of the number of registered maximum number of service users. If the target is partially reached then that proportion of 1 point is given. eg a Care Home with 50 registered maximum number of service users has a target of 10 Positive Reviews, if it has 10 or more Positive Reviews it will receive 1 point, if it has 7 reviews will receive 0.7 points.

    3. If there are no Positive Reviews in the last 12 months, then 2.5 points are available for the number of Positive Reviews in the last 2 years. The calculation is the same as above, except the points are divided by 2.

The 4.625 Points relating to the number of positive Reviews for St Nicholas Care Home is based on 22 positive Reviews in the last 12 months and is calculated as follows:

    1. 3 + 0.25 + 0.25 + 0.25 + 0.25 = 4

    2. Target of 35.2 positive Reviews (176 registered maximum number of service users ÷ 5). 22 Reviews ÷ 35.2 Target = 0.625

  • When a Review is submitted by someone who has previously submitted a Review, only the latest Review will count towards the Review Score.

8.9 St Nicholas Care Home has a Review Score of 8.9 (8.906) from 22 Reviews

St Nicholas Care Home looked after my husband so well.
He was in Gladstone House for three to four years but when his condition deteriorated, he was moved to Huskinson House. I cannot praise the staff too much.
They all treated him with very loving respect and on his difficult days they appealed to his sense of humour. Their pastoral care was also extended to me which I greatly appreciated. Gladstone House now has the care of my best friend of 50 years on my recommendation.

My dad settled in very well as the staff were friendly, concerned and interested in him as an individual. His room is clean, spacious and clothes well laundered. On every visit, he is clean and tidy. He enjoys his food and he is shown consideration when he prefers to remain a little longer in bed. There is usually a relaxed atmosphere, but other residents, if feeling unsettled, are dealt with patiently.

The staff on the unit where my sister lives are kind, caring and competent. They do their best to optimise her health and wellbeing.
The funding level nationally and locally does hamper them providing excellent care, for there is insufficient funding to regularly promote community presence for the residents. This is a real shame as many of them are only middle aged.
The quality of the food has improved since my complaint, packet (smash) potatoes has no place in residential care menu's.

We are confident that our uncle is being looked after well. The staff are pleasant and approachable. Our visits are not very frequent due to commitments so our observations below are based on what we have seen. We are confident that if any problem does arise HC One will contact us. We think this care home is expensive because self-funding clients are in the minority and therefore subsidise the clients funded by the local authority. It is unfair on people who have worked hard to fund their own retirement.

The staff are very good with residents but entertainment is far from adequate. No stimulation for residents apart from television. Visitors have to stand outside in some very cold conditions i.e. snow and ice until the doors are opened by staff, who are quick to respond at times but if one visitor is a pensioner with their own problems, two minutes are too long.

Impressed by the quality of the staff and their caring approach.
A second, quiet, lounge would be helpful but the design of the building probably prevents this.
Occasional trips out for residents to parks or gardens might also be helpful.

It's coming up to a year since my dad became a resident. His needs are met by the staff which can be very challenging for both. They are very warm and friendly, I never feel worried when I leave my dad.

Staff always helpful and caring. Some areas of rooms could do with more attention in the cleaning issues. The chairs that the residents sit in could do with a 6 monthly clean and also side of the removable bed covers should also do with the same.

At the time of writing, my mother has been in care for coming up to three years. I have been satisfied with the overall care and attention she has received, she is comfortable, enjoys her food so have I from time to time, compliments to the kitchen staff, and her room is kept clean to a good standard. The unit staff keep me informed of any minor issues regarding mum's condition.

Myself and family could not thank the staff enough for the care my nan received in the final 5 weeks of her life. She stayed in Langton. The staff were so accommodating, friendly and caring to my nan and all the family.
Nothing was ever too much for them, they sorted things straight away. They also made it our home too.
We will be forever grateful and appreciate it so much and could never repay them for the love and hospitality they showed us.
I would highly recommend it for a loved one.

We have used St Nicholas on 3 occasions this year for short respite breaks. It was a big decision for us as we had no previous experiences of using such facilities. We needn't have worried with hindsight as both mum and ourselves have been treated with the utmost respect and care, ensuring that mum is well looked after and that we can be assured that we can have a break. We hope to continue to use St Nicholas and would recommend to others.

Thank you for your review. I'm so happy that your mum has enjoyed her stays with us and that she was well cared for. I hope that she will come and stay with us again for a break.

My husband was fine in the home but said that a little bit more dignity was needed for covering up when getting washed. He was happy there and would stay again.

Mum has settled in so easily and this is due to the warmth and care of the staff. They quickly got to know her personality and sense of humour and use an approach to her needs that suits her. Dignity and warmth appear to be the order of the day. A relaxed demeanour with all residents creates a comfortable atmosphere in sometimes challenging circumstances. All is going smoothly thanks to the staff.

For the short time my father was in St Nicholas Care Home he was treated with dignity and kindness. The staff were all lovely and the management excellent. The home is clean and well run. They try to get to know the residents and what they like and how they can make their lives a little more comfortable.

From my initial meeting with staff (when I was looking for a care home for mum) and through all of my dealings with them while she was in respite, they were extremely helpful to me and my family. More importantly, they provided wonderful care to my mum. Nothing appeared to be too much trouble for them. They treated my mum with dignity and kindness.
I noticed that they engaged with residents and there always seemed to be plenty of staff on duty.
