Overall Experience
My husband was in a poor condition when he was admitted to St Nicholas care village 4 months ago from hospital. He has made a steady recovery thanks to the wonderful care of the nurses and carers on the Ambleside Unit. He is always clean and well cared for.

I have always found the staff to be friendly and approachable and always feel welcome. I would have no hesitation in recommending this care home.

Overall Experience

29 year old male misplaced in an over 65 retirement home by council. Grateful to St Nicks for providing me with a roof when I was struggling. Lot of agency staff made my time there a lot more difficult due to language barriers and miscommunication. Was suffering lots of problems whilst there however was out of the hands of st nicks. There own staff were great, family members of other elderly residents were happy with them, but also unhappy with the agency. Food was awful, lack of options, behaviour of some dementia patients was sad to see how it was handled. Place was filthy, grounds well kept. Did not provide many services, things to do I.e rehab, counselling, therapy or education etc. Was not many activities despite having an activity team come in and do care home karaoke etc, but was good to see the elderly enjoying themselves. I think being young and functioning I could see a lot more how things were going on as I was a lot less vulnerable. Treated with dignity 1 as on a DOLS.

Exceptional care that always puts Mum first - highly recommended
I cannot speak highly enough of St Nicholas care Home and the care provided to my mum. From the very first day, every member of staff has shown her genuine kindness, patience, and respect - treating her with the same warmth and dignity we would want as a family.
What stands out most is that they always act in her best interests. They take the time to really know her - her preferences, her history, what makes her smile - and make decisions based on her wellbeing, not just routine. They keep us fully informed, listen to our concerns, and always involve us alongside her wishes in any choices about her care. Nothing is too much trouble, and we never feel like just a number.

The care is consistently excellent, Staff are attentive, responsive and professional. The home is clean, comfortable and well kept. There is a range of activities to keep her entertained. My mum is safe and well cared for.

Overall Experience
Dad there for 5 months, which was too long!
Food was dreadful!! Spaghetti hoops?? Not Suitable for people over 80. And always cold, no veg or fruit except maybe on a Sunday. No fresh meals
Constantly lied by the Manager about a new chef coming, never happened in the 5. Decor basic, and outdated He was strapped in a wheelchair which at the time we did not know a procedure should have been followed, was never discussed with us, This made him very agitated and upset. We believe they just wanted him fastened in!
The permanent caring staff were good and nurses too, but too many agency staff! Staff morale extremely low, many staff left while he was there??Didnt take us long to realise why.

We gave 28 days notice that we were moving Dad, from that day to the day he left the Manager never spoke to us again!! Despite getting £1600 a week Ridiculously high for the poor quality of the place ! We had no choice to put Dad there then.

Overall Experience

My auntie has been in here for over a year and after a few hiccups with her clothes and her settling in also us accepting it, it's been amazing, the staff genuinely care for the residents, they're on the go constantly looking after them. They're all clean, the food they receive is a lot. I have spent a week in here as she's on end-of-life now and unbeknown to the staff I have watched from afar and they're great with them, they show them love, they sit and talk to them and they are never left alone it's home from home. It's clean and relaxing and that's what you need. If my auntie was in hospital she would easily have bed sores now as she isn't moving but the staff are in and out all day moving her. They talk to her, they hug her so if you're looking for residential care I would certainly choose here. The manager goes above and beyond, other ladies do too, even the night staff are great I honestly can't fault it, thank you so much for all your hard work.

If I could give this negative stars I would.

We had the most horrendous experience with this ‘nursing’ home. Please do not send your relatives here, they will be neglected and disrespected. The staff constantly lied to family members and when caught out on their lies would make further lies to cover their tracks.

My mums have been in the care of St Nicholas Care Home for over a year, and after a few teething problems, as every individual has different needs, the overall care and help and friendliness of the staff at all levels, from cleaners and carers to nurses is very good. My mum is very content, and I wouldn't put her anywhere else now.

Review of St Nicholas Care Home from Lindsey O (Niece of Resident) published on 27 January 2023 Submitted via Website
Overall Experience

I'd like to take this opportunity to thank St Nicholas most sincerely for the care and support shown to my auntie, who suffers from Dementia. When she first moved into the home in June 2021, she was withdrawn having been in the hospital for almost two months, and slowly, the staff helped her overcome this. It soon became her preference to be with the other residents in the main lounge where she has made friends. She is always clean and smart in her appearance, and following a recent hospital visit, the doctor commented on the good condition of her skin, which I put down to the personal hygiene standards provided in Gladstone. Whenever I visit my auntie, there is a lovely atmosphere in the home, and the residents and staff always seem happy. The staff take an interest in her and us as a family. They know her likes/dislikes and understand how important routine is to a Dementia sufferer, and this has all contributed to her overall happy demeanour. Thank you, St Nicholas.

Review of St Nicholas Care Home from Sean B (Son of Resident) published on 6 December 2022 Submitted via Website
Overall Experience

Had my mother in St Nicholas for just six weeks, and within the six weeks the deterioration of my mum's health and well-being was horrific, after spending over £300 on new clothes 80% of them had disappeared after two weeks, along with two pairs of glasses and a new pair of shoes, but that was just the beginning. After two weeks we began to see my mother's health deteriorating. She has dementia and was put in the Gladstone Part of the building. Mum was prescribed medication for as and when she needed calming down. Mum was a healthy 91 year old was able to walk, hold a good conversation, and eat and drink for herself but did have bouts where she would walk a lot and shout, but this come and goes within a couple of hours but if it didn't that was what the PRN sedation was for. After 6 weeks mum was rushed to the hospital with dangerously low blood pressure and severe dehydration. Safeguarding did an investigation and found that Mum was sedated 26 consecutive nights, she was also sedated in the day time on 6 separate occasions and on one occasion sedated 3 times.

Dear Mr B

We are sorry to hear that your experience of your mother's care, while resident at St Nicholas care home, was not of the highest standard that we expect for all our residents. We do receive a lot of positive feedback, however where our standards have not met our high expectations then...

Cannot thank you enough for the care, support and love shown to my mother.
She was so happy in your care.
The staff could not have done more to help my mum settle in and be part of your family.
The regular updates and photos kept us together when we couldn’t be.

God bless you all.

Overall Experience
My husband attended Beechwood for four years, and in all that time, he was treated with the utmost respect and courtesy.
The staff and management always enjoyed a laugh and joke with my husband, and he was very happy there.

I strongly recommend Beechwood as a care home, as I am confident all residents will be happy.

Big thank you to all staff and carers who look after our loved one. Excellent commitment and care given, some even going the extra mile to make sure they are cared for with love, patience, understanding and caring. Gives us peace of mind.

Our daughter has been a resident for over 20 years and the care she receives has never been better than it is now. Over that time, there have only been a few minor complaints these have always been dealt with to our satisfaction. We are very happy to recommend to future clients families to St Nicholas's.
