Situated in a lovely residential area of Hoylake, 10 minutes walk from the Prom, Abney Low is a 37 bedded nursing home, providing nursing care to older people and people living with dementia.

The home has many places for residents to relax and enjoy the company of family and friends, including a large lounge area, a dining room as well as some quieter areas.

My mum and other residents love having Walter the dog here. He reminds them of home and provides therapy. They really look forward to seeing him and other animals. The issues I have with this nursing home are organisation, some carers are not attentive to residents' needs and will sit on their phones,
and the main room is far too loud (TV). They need to have gentle background sounds to calm the residents (lower sound). Mum also needs ups instead.

When my mum arrived at Abney Low, she was so happy to meet everyone, but most of all, she met Walter, the manager's English Bulldog. Her face lit up when he was visiting the home.
The residents all love him, their faces light up when he is there. It's so lovely to see, I hope he carries on being the
resident mascot.

Find the home friendly and welcoming, with all staff helpful.
Nice to see people doing everyday things like getting their nails done by one of the staff and being able to pet a dog.

I really like the way the home makes every effort to make residents feel at home. I am able to bring my dog over to see my brother as he used to take him for a walk before he was ill. It brings him and other residents some comfort.

I am mostly impressed by the majority of staff at Abney Low. They are friendly, caring and efficient and treat Eunice well and with dignity. Because of her lack of her mobility; she often has to stay in her room. I feel there could be more individual activities for her. Because Eunice is on a minced
and moist diet, some days her meals are limiting, i.e. mashed potato/1 piece of broccoli and gravy, although NOT always! The home is clean and welcoming, and in general staff are hard working and do their very best for the residents.
Reply from Alison Foreman, Commercial Director at Abney Low Nursing HomeThank you very much for taking the time to review Abney Low. We note your comments and have made the manager aware, please take the opportunity to discuss the matters around menu option and activities with him. As you said yourself, the team 'do their very best for the residents' and we welcome all feedback in order that care at the home is exemplary for all. Kind regards

Dad came into Abney Low on 29/04/25. We were worried he wouldn't settle. We can honestly say it was the best thing we have done. Dad settled in from day 1. The staff are fabulous and always have a smile on their face for not just dad, but myself and mum. Always made to feel welcome. I am kept up to
date on all dads' progress.
Can't thank all the staff enough for the care and attention they give my dad daily. Plenty of activities and lots of dancing.
Reply from Alison Foreman, Commercial Director at Abney Low Nursing HomeThank you very much for your very kind words about the team at Abney Low. My mum has been in Abney Low Care Home since March 25, having come from another home due to its closure. I have found the staff and the care our mum receives is excellent, always putting mum's care and safety first nothing any trouble. Big difference from the previous care home.

Current Review Score: 9.5 (9.476)

Overview of Review Score

The Review Score of 9.5 (9.476) out of 10 for Abney Low Nursing Home is based on a) the Average Rating and b) the number of positive Reviews.

  1. The Average Rating is 4.5 out of 5 from 42 Reviews in the last 24 months.
  2. The score for the number of positive Reviews is 5.0 out of 5 from 38 positive Reviews in the last 24 months.

Detailed Breakdown of Review Score

The maximum Review Score for a Care Home is 10, which is made up from the Average Rating of Reviews (maximum of 5 points) and the Number of Reviews (maximum of 5 points) in the last 24 months:

  1. 5 Points are available for the Average Rating from all Reviews in the last 24 months. The Average Rating of 4.476 for Abney Low Nursing Home is calculated as follows: ( (278 Excellents x 5) + (160 Goods x 4) + (38 Satisfactorys x 3) + (4 Poors x 2) + (1 Very Poors x 1) ) ÷ 481 Ratings = 4.476
  2. 5 Points are available for the number of Positive Reviews in the last 24 months. A Positive Review is defined as any Review with an 'Overall Experience' of '4' or '5' (out of a max rating '5'). The 5 Points relating to the number of positive Reviews for Abney Low Nursing Home is based on 38 positive Reviews in the last 24 months and is calculated as per below:

The 5 points available are broken down as follows:

    1. 4 points are available for the first 20 Positive Reviews in the last 24 months; 3 points for the first Positive Review, 0.125 Points for each of the next four Positive Reviews, 0.05 Points for the next five Positive Reviews, and finally 0.025 Points for the next ten Positive Reviews. (1st = 3.000, 2nd = 0.125, 3rd = 0.125, 4th = 0.125, 5th = 0.125, 6th = 0.050, 7th = 0.050, 8th = 0.050, 9th = 0.050, 10th = 0.050, 11th = 0.025, 12th = 0.025, 13th = 0.025, 14th = 0.025, 15th = 0.025, 16th = 0.025, 17th = 0.025, 18th = 0.025, 19th = 0.025, 20th = 0.025) 3 + 0.125 + 0.125 + 0.125 + 0.125 + 0.05 + 0.05 + 0.05 + 0.05 + 0.05 + 0.025 + 0.025 + 0.025 + 0.025 + 0.025 + 0.025 + 0.025 + 0.025 + 0.025 + 0.025 = 4
    2. 1 point is available for the number of Positive Reviews reaching 20% of the registered maximum number of service users in the last 24 months. If this number is partially reached, then that proportion of 1 point is given. eg a Care Home registered for a maximum of 50 service users has to reach 10 Positive Reviews to receive 1 point, if it has 7 reviews it will receive 0.7 points. 20% of the 40 registered maximum number of service users is 8, which has been reached with 38 Positive reviews. Points = 1
  3. When a Review is submitted by someone who has previously submitted a Review, only the latest Review will count towards the Review Score.
  4. If a Care Home does not have a review in the last 24 months, then it will not have a Review Score.
