The Prospect House philosophy is that the individual should be at the centre of everything. The home is led by the Home Manager and a band of RGNs and RMNs with many years' experience in caring for the physical health needs of older people.

Dementia care is provided in the Garden Rooms and the Bowling Green Rooms.   Dividing the home into smaller clusters of residents helps to stimulate a sense of familiarity for residents and, for staff, promotes a deeper understanding of residents' needs.

Prospect House aims at excellence and continuous improvement at every turn - from daily activities to catering, from top-notch training to building maintenance.

Transparency and communication are held to be very important and the home is well worth a visit.

My late mother went to Prospect House for end of life nursing care when she could no longer manager in her own home. Although we knew it would be a very short stay, it was a huge relief at a very difficult time to know she was in excellent hands. We were able to visit several times a day. Their care
for her and us as a family was exemplary. This is the kind of care everyone should have in their last days.

My father has been in Prospect House for five months now and has settled into a routine thanks to the patience and kindness of all the staff who support him. This is the third home that he has lived in and is by far the best. Residents needing EMI nursing care are treated with great dignity and respect.
Carers are always positive and professional and concerns are quickly addressed when raised. I visit my father almost daily and I am constantly impressed by the quality of the food, the speed with which his laundry is washed and the phenomenal care that he is shown/receives. It is all very reassuring for my family.

I am being well cared for by nice friendly staff only at times there is a shortage of staff which can cause delays, as I have some concerns and I am totally dependant on a wheelchair and partially sighted.

My mother stayed in the care home for one week's respite. She was welcomed and well looked after. Her room was good and clean. She told me the staff were kind and the food was good. "I couldn't fault it", she said. I was welcomed when I visited.

My husband chose this care nursing home for himself. He had visited many, many times over the years as a professional. He had as part of his job visited many of their homes in the district and chose this one without hesitation. What higher recommendation can you get than that?
Reply from Caroline Rowland, Matron at Prospect House

Ann, we were always very honoured that your husband chose us we were very fond of him. It was unusual for us to know the person so well before they require our help. We miss seeing you both.

My father has been resident for 6 months. He is very happy and we are delighted with all aspects of the care, medical, entertainment, accommodation and nothing is too much trouble for the professional and other staff.
It is a great relief to my brother and myself that he is safe and well cared for,
especially as we experienced poor care elsewhere before we found Prospect House.

Our association with Prospect House goes back a long way, both my father in law and mother in law had been cared for there. It was our first choice when mum in law needed nursing home care and fortunately, a room was available. We were comforted that she was able to spend the final 6 weeks of her life
in Malpas her home for many years, under the care of the surgery and the staff of Prospect House. Unfortunately, she was not well enough to take part in many activities available but did seem to get some enjoyment out of the Christmas activities laid on.

Cannot recommend this care home enough. All staff are extremely caring and professional. The home itself is beautiful, always clean and odour free. Dementia care is great. Nothing ever is any trouble for any of staff. Have had experience of a number of care homes and found this one outstanding.

I was in Prospect House to convalesce. While I was weak I was very impressed with the standard of care. As I grew stronger and more mobile I noticed that understandably there was limited opportunity to improve. I do not criticise merely observe. There were issues with my bathroom some eyebrow raising
issues with medication, the first due to bad design (toilet glass shelf) and the second with staff shortage. The cheerfulness of the staff at all times was astonishing their patience and kindness too. I was and remain deeply grateful to them all.

The care and consideration given to my mother for the last few months of her life was second to none. She had a severe vascular condition which needed a lot of attention, especially in the last month, but her needs were always met with a smile and such kindness. She was kept immaculately clean, as was
her room, which was very homely and welcoming. Prospect House was always a happy place to visit at any time of day, with a cheerful, positive staff and warm atmosphere where nothing was too much trouble. I cannot praise them highly enough and always feel, as I leave that she was in good hands.

Unfortunately, my mother was unable to take part in any of the activities, but there seemed to be quite a few things happening on a regular basis.

My Godmother, came to Prospect House initially for 6 to 8 weeks of respite as she has an ulcerated foot and was unable to walk even with her frame. The care generally has been excellent and she has been happy to stay longer as is necessary. A few minor issues have arisen from time to time regarding
not getting my Godmother up until late, taking too long to answer her call bell and forgetting her lunch, but overall the care is of a very good standard and staff seem willing and cheerful. The Matron is always very helpful and accommodating, especially with the help provided for my Godmother's 90th birthday celebration held at the home recently.

She had the best most expensive room for the end of her life, very kind and helpful - held room for 2 weeks prior to arrival due to hospital slowing down their discharge procedure. Offered to pay for room so as not to lose it - though didn't quite expect to pay full whack as no food/nursing was required
until my aunt arrived - only received it from £170 per night to £164 - hence very large bill (£6232) for just about 2 weeks (died on 30th of June).
I didn't grumble as luckily she was there for such a short time and happy (most important) - but felt it was a bit steep. Hoping for a slight rebate through funding approved but not heard yet. They are also good at tailoring to patients requests so it is not institutionalised - a major plus point. Best in area even if not cheap.
Reply from Caroline Rowland, Matron at Prospect House

It's always good to get a reality check on fees. It's great to know you were so happy with all our care and services - but we do realise that many people have tight restrictions on their budget. That's why we offer a range of rooms from a standard en-suite, to the luxury patio access suite with kitchenette and wet room that your aunt occupied. It was, as you say, that your aunt stayed one of the best and most expensive of our rooms and we would certainly have effected a move to a much less expensive room as permitted by availability and had we been granted longer to care for her. Only yesterday the funding we have been pushing for arrived, and I'm pleased to say that your costs will therefore be reduced by nearly 25%. Nursing home care is undeniably expensive. But our standard room with en-suite, at £109 per day, is less than some B+B's and we can generally offer this at the time of admission or within a relatively short time thereafter. Thanks again for rating us excellent at ... almost ... everything!

Prospect House has a very homely, welcoming feeling. Staff ratios are excellent and they communicate well when we visit. Mother had become very underweight following a fall and a stay in the hospital, but since arriving at Prospect House she has started eating again and taking an interest in her surroundings.
Staff are very attentive and the home is of a very high standard with regards to cleanliness. Standard rooms are less expensive than comparable rooms in care homes in the area, but the quality is not compromised. Can't recommend Prospect House highly enough.

My father was cared for at Prospect House for the last eight months of his life until he died peacefully in his sleep. When he moved to Prospect House he had advanced dementia and so was unable to understand his own needs or situation. It was very difficult to make a decision on his behalf but we are
so grateful that he was able to be cared for here as the staff were extremely kind, competent and knowledgeable and ensured that he was well looked after and that he received the help and support that he needed.
Other visitors often commented on the good care they observed. We were always confident that our father was safe, that the home was well staffed and that the residents were regularly monitored both day and night. My father seemed to adjust well to living there and to appreciate the care he was receiving.

Mum spent 3 1/2 months in respite at Prospect House earlier this year. She soon settled in and enjoyed the morning activities. She had nothing but praise for the staff and the matron, enjoyed the food- she said she felt like a VIP. It was a sad day indeed for mum and myself when she had to leave.

My wife went to Prospect House in Jan 2013 and died in February 2016. For three years she had extremely good care. A member of staff said to me once "If we didn't like the job we wouldn't do it" and that attitude seemed to apply to all the staff. Whilst the residents were patients they were also friends
and treated us as such. She always had a smile for the staff and received one in return. I and my family couldn't have wished for a better standard of care.

Current Review Score: 8.9 (8.891)

Overview of Review Score

The Review Score of 8.9 (8.891) out of 10 for Prospect House is based on a) the Average Rating and b) the number of positive Reviews.

  1. The Average Rating is 4.8 out of 5 from 6 Reviews in the last 24 months.
  2. The score for the number of positive Reviews is 4.1 out of 5 from 6 positive Reviews in the last 24 months.

Detailed Breakdown of Review Score

The maximum Review Score for a Care Home is 10, which is made up from the Average Rating of Reviews (maximum of 5 points) and the Number of Reviews (maximum of 5 points) in the last 24 months:

  1. 5 Points are available for the Average Rating from all Reviews in the last 24 months. The Average Rating of 4.829 for Prospect House is calculated as follows: ( (59 Excellents x 5) + (10 Goods x 4) + (1 Satisfactorys x 3) ) ÷ 70 Ratings = 4.829
  2. 5 Points are available for the number of Positive Reviews in the last 24 months. A Positive Review is defined as any Review with an 'Overall Experience' of '4' or '5' (out of a max rating '5'). The 4.062 Points relating to the number of positive Reviews for Prospect House is based on 6 positive Reviews in the last 24 months and is calculated as per below:

The 5 points available are broken down as follows:

    1. 4 points are available for the first 10 Positive Reviews in the last 24 months; 3 points for the first Positive Review, and then 0.125 Points for each of the next four Positive Reviews and then 0.1 Points for the next five Positive Reviews. (1st = 3.000, 2nd = 0.125, 3rd = 0.125, 4th = 0.125, 5th = 0.125, 6th = 0.100, 7th = 0.100, 8th = 0.100, 9th = 0.100, 10th = 0.100) 3 + 0.125 + 0.125 + 0.125 + 0.125 + 0.1 = 3.6
    2. 1 point is available for the number of Positive Reviews reaching 20% of the registered maximum number of service users in the last 24 months. If this number is partially reached, then that proportion of 1 point is given. eg a Care Home registered for a maximum of 50 service users has to reach 10 Positive Reviews to receive 1 point, if it has 7 reviews it will receive 0.7 points. 20% of the 65 registered maximum number of service users is 13. 6 Positive Reviews ÷ 13 = 0.462
  3. When a Review is submitted by someone who has previously submitted a Review, only the latest Review will count towards the Review Score.
  4. If a Care Home does not have a review in the last 24 months, then it will not have a Review Score.
