Douglas Bank Nursing Home is set in beautiful countryside with stunning views over Appley Bridge, a quaint canal-side Lancashire village. It is easily accessible with good road and railway links.

The building was previously a 17th Century farmhouse and has been converted in a luxury care home, which specialises in providing nursing care for older people and people living with dementia as well as adults with enduring mental health difficulties.

There is a dedicated activities co-ordinator who provides a varied programme of activities that stimulate residents both physically and mentally.

All bedrooms are furnished to a high standard and the team encourage residents to bring little mementos to make it feel more homely. The home has its own private gardens which residents enjoy at every opportunity.

Dad has settled in very well at Douglas Bank. All the staff are friendly, helpful & professional. the premises, lounges, rooms etc are well kept, clean & homely. My reasons for choosing Douglas Bank was because it's less clinical & more homely. I feel happy & reassured knowing Dad is cared for at Douglas

I am really enjoying living at the nursing home and it feels homely and my family enjoy visiting me here as made to feel at home. I have a lot of care requirements and I feel like these needs are met and that I am included in all decision making i.e. choosing clothes, meals and including me in all activities.
The staff treat me with great respect and dignity and wash, dress and feed me. I feel like nothing is too much trouble, as well as my care needs the staff always make sure to have a chat when checking on me.

My dad moved into Douglas Bank in March 2024, it is the third nursing home he has been in, the first two could not cope with his needs. He enjoys his meals, he is always clean and tidy and dressed nicely. His room is always clean as well as the visiting areas. All the staff are friendly and approachable
and nothing is too much trouble. Dad is happy here.

My neighbour seems much more settled here than in the previous car home. I think it's partly due to the staff who stop for a chat with her, cheer her up. The TV is in a good position and not at the end of a long room, as you see in many places. All small things, but they make a difference.

Mum has only been at Douglas Bank for a few weeks. She is thriving with the superb care and support she is receiving.The staff are always warm and welcoming when we visit. We can rest now assured that she is getting top shelf care.

The staff are very caring and take a lot of interest in my mum and are learning lots about her, which is helping mum settle really well. The staff listen to our family and have put in place lots of lovely things for mum. Nothing is too much trouble. Mum is getting a lot of stimulation and is thriving.

Since Mum moved in, there have been lots of changes, but management is very aware and makes decisions to keep things simple until she settles down.
Mum has hygiene issues, so I hope helpers look after her when in the bathroom and keep her hands clean and nails short. After only a week or so, I can
see lots of caring helpers doing the right thing.

My dad has been in the nursing home for some short-term respite. You can see visibly how my dad has improved with his mobile alertness and is enjoying the home experience. The staff have been very attentive, and nothing is too much trouble for my dad's needs or anyone else in the home.

My mum continues to receive excellent care, it was a big shock to mum when she lost the use of her arms and legs in the summer of 2022. All the staff at Douglas Bank Nursing Home made sure my mum retained her dignity, making sure each day she was cared for, and given choices for example choosing her
own clothes and helping with washing and dressing, providing support both physically and mentally, including mum in activities and social events ensures mum to socialise with other residents.

I live far away and am unable to visit my dad often. The staff are aware of this and always happy to update me by phone. I feel when I talk to them that they know my dad well and obviously listen to him.

I think I can safely say for my family as a whole that we are more than happy with the help, care and comfort provided for our dad. There is always a smiling friendly welcome from the lovely staff, every area is spotlessly clean and orderly, and music is always playing with the staff fully engaging
with the residents. Our dad is always happy relaxed well fed, clean and well groomed. It is a big comfort that our family that our dad is safe well and thriving here at Douglas Bank Nursing Home.

John Holland

Job Title: Registered Manager

John Holland is a Registered Nurse with over 20 years of experience. He started his nursing career at the Royal Liverpool Teaching Hospital. During his training as a nurse, he also worked at the Broadgreen Hospital and Stoddart House in Aintree Hospital. When John completed his nursing training specialising in mental health, he then worked at Ashworth Special Hospital and Altcourse Prison.


John has a wealth of knowledge, skills and experience and has been managing a care home for over 10 years. He enjoys caring for and supporting residents living with dementia and complex care needs through person-centred care.


John wants to use his nursing and managerial skills to help Douglas Bank develop and improve while keeping Residents and staff at the heart of everything they do.
