My nan has been at the care home for around 4 years, in this time we have been through alot with her, including a broken neck(she is a very lucjy lady), after that she mostly stayed in her room and didnt come out much, since kyle has joined the team, she is like a new woman, she always going down to the comunal areas and soend alot less time in her room, we have noticed a massive change in her mood she is much happier and feels more at home.

My father did not want to live in a care home. It took him a while to settle down. With the kindness and patience from the staff on Coniston, my dad settled really well on here and he couldn't be happier. My dad describes Coniston as a 5* hotel. He loves the food and that there is anyways a cup of tea and biscuits at anytime of the day, carers (all of them), he appreciates the love and the kindness given as do I. He loves that he has been supported in making his room really his home with his belonging. He loves the environment and the surrounding countryside and there is nature on the door step. Staff encourage my dad to pursue his interest and discover new ones. Coniston staff are always encouraging the residents to live their best lives and as a family member I feel that I am welcome and that I have made myself at home.

My mum has been in the care home for over 12 months. She has settled well and is safe and well looked after. The staff work hard and care. There are niggles which could be improved - we have fed this back but improvements don't seem to happen, if this could happen it would make a massive difference.

Reply from Lucie Drakeford, Communications and Marketing Manager at Callands Care Home

Thank you for sharing your feedback and for trusting us with your mum's care over the past year. We are really pleased to hear she has settled well and that you feel she is safe and cared for, that's so important to us.

We are sorry to hear that some of the improvements you've raised haven't yet...

My brother has lived at Callands Care home for the past two years. He received a serious brain injury 20 years ago and has been all round the country in various homes / institutions and I have followed him. This was the first care home funnily enough he was in after his injury. ...and now thank goodness he is back. I visit regularly and love the staff and the relaxed atmosphere and always feel very welcomed. The main thing is I come away from my visits knowing my younger brother is in safe hands and in a caring safe environment, with members of staff on Conniston that go the extra mile and my brother is the happiest he has been in many years . I can not thank them enough for the care he has and how it's changed my life too knowing he is being looked after . Thank you all from carers to cleaners .

Staff amazing and never stop, receptionist needed sat and Sunday, visitors wait ages for attention so many doors hv security and not fair to expect staff caring for patients to be messing about with all doors to reach front door to eventually let visitor in. Less staff as it is at the weekend and they should not be leaving residents to answer doors. Can't praise the staff enough in their care for the residents which is definitely not easy on grasmere floor.

To Whom It May Concern,

I am writing to raise serious concerns regarding the care and treatment of my mother-in-law, [Her Full Name], who was admitted to Callands Care Home in late May 2025 following a hospital stay due to a broken right leg sustained in a fall. She was placed at Callands for assessment and support, with clear knowledge that she was a high fall risk.

Upon visiting regularly with my wife, we observed a series of unacceptable practices and apparent neglect that we feel compelled to report:

Inadequate Supervision & Unsafe Room Placement

Despite her known fall risk, she was placed in a far room (referred to us as "the furthest room") where there was little to no staff presence. As a result, she suffered multiple falls while under the care home's supervision. The repeated bruising on her body was visible and disturbing, yet we found no evidence that these incidents were being recorded or responded to appropriately.

CQC should pay a visit ASAP

Reply from Daisy Edmondson, Marketing Executive at Callands Care Home

I am sorry to read your review of your experience of our home. We have fully investigated your concerns. Every incident in our care home is thoroughly investigated and logged on our incident management system and we constantly review staffing rotas to ensure that there are adequate staff members to...

Impossibly long wait out in all weathers before entry into recepton at weekends. Often impossible to get through to anyone by phone after reception gone home, as unti staff busy.

Suggestion - for those visiting frequently, and long term, have identity cards, similar to hospitals.

The care Mum has received in the last 3 years has been excellent on Coniston/Windemere. All team members have been amazing and I myself have built up a good report. Nothing has been too much trouble. Out of all the homes I reviewed, this was the best one and really pleased I chose it. When Mum has been ill I was quickly notified and the care also shown to myself has really touched me. Thank you! Highly recommend. I will miss you all.

My dad has been in the home since September 2023. He is slowly but steadily declining which makes his care increasingly more complex. I am delighted with the level of care my dad receives. The staff are consistently jovial and very positive towards my father. Their professionalism is amazing. We cannot thank them enough for the difficult work they do, day in and day out.

Having had no experience of a care home setting we were very apprehensive about Mum moving to live there. However, from our first interaction with the staff we were put at ease and felt confident that she would be well looked after and kept safe. The team quickly picked up Mum's needs and worked out the best way to communicate and look after her. They were always prepared to listen to our views and ideas and made relevant changes to her care so that it was the best for her. Mum was happy, settled and treated with dignity, her personal care needs were always met. Her room clean and tidy, food OK and alternatives always offered. Medication given on time.

The staff were absolutely amazing and built a strong bond with Mum. It was a fun and positive atmosphere but still maintained professionalism at all times. At the end of Mum's life the staff were there for both her and us and for that we are eternally grateful. We couldn't ask for a better team of people to look after our precious mum.

My mum was a resident at Callands Care Home for just over 12 months.
She was very settled and happy there. She was always treated with dignity and kindness. Her room big, spacious, homely, clean and tidy. Her personal care needs were always met. Medication was given on time and the food was good. The team would always find an alternative if needed.
As a family, we were always made welcome when we went to visit. The staff would answer any queries/concerns that we would have. They listened to our ideas and views in terms of Mum's care.
For me, it was the staff who made my mum's time there so enjoyable and settled. It felt like a big family. The atmosphere was positive and fun, but the staff were always professional.

At the end of Mum's life again the staff were there to offer support and care, not only for my mum, but also to us as a family. I cannot thank them enough for this.

Mother has been at Callands, on the Coniston unit for approximately 2 1/2 years. Initially, we were very pleased with the placement and the fact she was now receiving the care which her previous care home could not provide. When visiting, the staff are polite, respectful and friendly, but they are clearly run off their feet. There are just not enough of them, and the people who suffer are those they are caring for, as with any care home, no matter what the fees. There are items that will go missing like clothing and toiletries so one needs to keep an eye on these items. Anything more serious I would advise that you speak with management whom we found very approachable, and recently dealt with a few issues of ours quickly, and to our satisfaction. Since the recent CQC grading for Callands as a whole, I have seen a concerted effort by the organisation to improve things. In conclusion, a canopy over the front entrance would be welcome to protect visitors from the elements whilst waiting to gain entry and making contact with the relevant unit via the intercom.

My mother died on 12-2-24 and I cannot thank the staff enough for their care and support of me, my mum and my dear auntie and uncle.
I always felt welcome by the staff and they listened and answered my questions with sensitivity.
My parents were in the care system for 5 years and my advice to others entering the system is to work with the staff, they are your support, don't fret about clothes going missing, it doesn't matter. What matters is how they treat your parents/loved ones and my parents have been treated with the utmost respect and amazing care.

The staff have taught me much and I thank you from the bottom of my heart each and every one of you and for the support during my mum's 'good death', amen.

The staff are very supportive/professional. My mum has always been cared for and safe at Callands, every time I visit she is happy. I was shocked to see the CQC report in a local newspaper - with so many horrible comments - 99% of people couldn't do the job the staff do! She's always clean and the food's lovely. As is the activity lady who does my mum's nails. The staff and management didn't deserve to be plastered on social media.
