Mum is on Ullswater wing of this care home receiving end-of-life care. From the first day Mum came here, all the staff are amazing and exceptional at providing high-level care for our loved ones. All the staff are friendly and respectful and very helpful. You can see that the staff take pride in their
work and caring for their patients. We know Mum doesn't have long and we couldn't have wished for a better place. All the staff here are angels. A very big thank you to all the staff, you truly are all amazing.

My husband entered the care home at end of May 2021. Since that date, he has been lovingly cared for and nursed. He stated that they look after him very well - also he enjoys the food, his room is spacious, modern and comfortable. The whole building is very attractive in the enclosed gardens. Also well
maintained, inside and out. I am very pleased I chose this care home for my husband.

I am satisfied with the care my relative is receiving, but I am not happy with the arrangements for visiting. It's so hard to get appointments to visit, it can be up to three weeks on occasions and I am only allowed twenty minutes which I find unacceptable, I am fully vaccinated so why can I not go
to her room for a visit, this arrangement needs addressing urgently.
Reply from Diane Kerwin, Hospital Liaison Team Administrator at Callands Care HomeThank you for your review, we value all feedback as this helps us to improve our service where required. We apologise you feel visiting arrangements have not been satisfactory. We have a robust system in place to provide supportive family visiting for your loved one. To assist with this, we can offer to enroll you on the weekly PCR home testing regime and you can be registered as an essential caregiver. This allows room visiting on a one-to-one basis providing your test is negative and you are wearing PPE the home will provide you with on each booked visit. Room visits do still need to be booked via each unit so that we can monitor and track activity to ensure your loved one is aware of your visit. Set time restrictions will not be enforced only reviewed and discussed at the time of booking. We hope this provides you with the assurance you seek. Of course, you are welcome to contact the Home Manager should you require any further assistance with this matter.

We had a full group meeting with a member of staff from each team on Mum's unit.
All staff are very friendly and professional.
Mum encouraged to join in activities.
Would be nice if we could see Mum's room so we can organise it so pictures are on the wall and a shelf for smaller pictures and toys.
Reply from Diane Kerwin, Hospital Liaison Team Administrator at Callands Care HomeThank you for your review, we value all feedback as this helps us to improve our service where required. Regarding your Mother’s room, we would happily arrange for you to meet with our maintenance team who will assist in ensuring that your Mother’s room reflects her personal likes and preferences. At HC-One we appreciate the importance of having a comfortable and personalised bedroom so we would be delighted if you contacted the home management team who will make the necessary arrangements.

Found the staff friendly and efficient, but was disappointed by the manager's lack of compassion at a time when we as a family needed support. I felt she was dismissive. My sister was allowed in every couple of days to say goodbye. We understood COVID was a huge part but felt the manager did not try
to come up with a solution, we will never get another chance and we feel heartbroken, and to be given a 'review us' form 10 minutes after Mum passed away was very, very insensitive. We know it is the manager's discretion about visits, but we feel we were failed.
Reply from Julie Caygill, Hospital Liaison Team Administrator at Callands Care HomeThank you for your review, we value all feedback as this helps us to improve our service where required. At the time of the request to visit your mother who was poorly, we were in national lockdown and the home was in outbreak status. The manager explained to the gentleman who called to request to visit that there were already two designated visitors, per government and local authority guidance, and that we had to adhere to this. The manager informed the caller that this was not a discretionary choice but the visiting ruling in place at the time. We fully appreciate how heartbreaking these circumstances have been for families who have not been able to visit during the Covid-19 pandemic due to the restrictions in place. We concur it was not an appropriate time to give you a review form. We would like to apologise for this and thank you for bringing this to our attention. The manager would like to profusely apologise for coming across as dismissive and stated that this certainly was not her intent during these ongoing trying times for residents, family and staff.

My father was only there for 5 days but the staff were great with him, even though he couldn't communicate very well - they always knocked on the door before entering and told him what they were going to do before they did anything. At the end they respected his wishes, they treated him with compassion
and dignity.
Thank you all so much.

The staff are very kind and understanding and make sure that I am comfortable. They treat me as if I was family, they do not take short cuts when carrying out other duties.
The food is not always to my liking, I eat a lot of sandwiches as an alternative to the meals. The green vegetables are overcooked
and soggy.
I wish to thank everyone for their support in accepting me.
Reply from Julie Caygill, Hospital Liaison Team Administrator at Callands Care HomeThank you for your review, we value all feedback as this helps us to improve our service where required. We believe you have met with the Head Chef to discuss alternative menu options you might prefer. I am sorry the green vegetables are not to your liking; we have met with the kitchen staff and staff on the unit to discuss this issue. Food kept in a hot trolley can contribute to vegetables becoming soggy and the staff have given assurance they will serve the meals promptly, which we anticipate will help to prevent this happening. Please feel free to liaise with the Head Chef at your convenience should you have any other food matters to discuss. Thank you for your lovely positive comments regarding our staff team who we know work very hard to provide the kindest care to our residents.

Current Review Score: 8.0 (7.951)

Overview of Review Score

The Review Score of 8.0 (7.951) out of 10 for Callands Care Home is based on a) the Average Rating and b) the number of positive Reviews.

  1. The Average Rating is 4.2 out of 5 from 9 Reviews in the last 24 months.
  2. The score for the number of positive Reviews is 3.8 out of 5 from 6 positive Reviews in the last 24 months.

Detailed Breakdown of Review Score

The maximum Review Score for a Care Home is 10, which is made up from the Average Rating of Reviews (maximum of 5 points) and the Number of Reviews (maximum of 5 points) in the last 24 months:

  1. 5 Points are available for the Average Rating from all Reviews in the last 24 months. The Average Rating of 4.151 for Callands Care Home is calculated as follows: ( (62 Excellents x 5) + (21 Goods x 4) + (8 Satisfactorys x 3) + (7 Poors x 2) + (8 Very Poors x 1) ) ÷ 106 Ratings = 4.151
  2. 5 Points are available for the number of Positive Reviews in the last 24 months. A Positive Review is defined as any Review with an 'Overall Experience' of '4' or '5' (out of a max rating '5'). The 3.8 Points relating to the number of positive Reviews for Callands Care Home is based on 6 positive Reviews in the last 24 months and is calculated as per below:

The 5 points available are broken down as follows:

    1. 4 points are available for the first 20 Positive Reviews in the last 24 months; 3 points for the first Positive Review, 0.125 Points for each of the next four Positive Reviews, 0.05 Points for the next five Positive Reviews, and finally 0.025 Points for the next ten Positive Reviews. (1st = 3.000, 2nd = 0.125, 3rd = 0.125, 4th = 0.125, 5th = 0.125, 6th = 0.050, 7th = 0.050, 8th = 0.050, 9th = 0.050, 10th = 0.050, 11th = 0.025, 12th = 0.025, 13th = 0.025, 14th = 0.025, 15th = 0.025, 16th = 0.025, 17th = 0.025, 18th = 0.025, 19th = 0.025, 20th = 0.025) 3 + 0.125 + 0.125 + 0.125 + 0.125 + 0.05 = 3.55
    2. 1 point is available for the number of Positive Reviews reaching 20% of the registered maximum number of service users in the last 24 months. If this number is partially reached, then that proportion of 1 point is given. eg a Care Home registered for a maximum of 50 service users has to reach 10 Positive Reviews to receive 1 point, if it has 7 reviews it will receive 0.7 points. 20% of the 120 registered maximum number of service users is 24. 6 Positive Reviews ÷ 24 = 0.25
  3. When a Review is submitted by someone who has previously submitted a Review, only the latest Review will count towards the Review Score.
  4. If a Care Home does not have a review in the last 24 months, then it will not have a Review Score.
