Callands Care Home in Warrington is a large, welcoming home offering residential, nursing, dementia, respite and specialist care for up to 120 residents. Part of the Dovehaven family, the home is designed around five smaller, household-style communities, helping create a calm, familiar and supportive environment where people can feel truly at home.

Each household has its own lounges and dining areas, with bright en-suite bedrooms that residents are encouraged to personalise with their own belongings. This helps create a real sense of identity, comfort and familiarity, while still offering access to the wider facilities across the home.

My brother passed away at the end of March but I will always be grateful for the wonderful care he received from the staff on Lakeside at Callands Care Home. We were treated like family and were always sure of a warm welcome. I began to look forward to my visits. When lockdown began video calls were
arranged and I was able to see and speak to him which was a great comfort and reassurance to him. I have made a return visit and although outdoors, the welcome was just as warm.

The manager is so kind, thoughtful and helpful. My father in law is so happy here especially since a new activity coordinator started last week. He used to stay in his bed but now he is up joining in the activities with the other residents and interacting. I'd love to tell you about certain carers and
nurses so they get the recognition they deserve but it states no names!

The staff are amazing. Friendly, helpful and extremely supportive. Fun and enthusiastic. My Dad was at Callands from October 2018 until he passed in June 2019. Now Mum is in their care since July 2019. Like a second home to me when I visit. The building is being renovated and updated and it's looking
fantastic. The staff do an amazing job.

My brother lived the last five months of his life here and was extremely well cared for, the staff were brilliant with him, he could be difficult to help at times due to his condition, but the nursing staff had a lot of patience with him and made his last months very comfortable, he wanted for nothing
and his family were always informed about his condition.
I cannot thank the staff enough for there caring and patience, although my brother did not take advantage of the many events that the nursing home provides for the residents, I know there are plenty of activities going on daily.

Special thanks to you all.

This care home provides everything that Mum now needs. (She is not mobile and has dementia).
The staff are extremely hard working, yet the care and compassion with which they treat residents shine through. There is always a smile and a friendly word and they are never too busy to talk about how Mum
is doing.
Because of Mum's condition, she doesn't remember anything about her care, but it's always simple to find out if she's eating well/off food.
Given that this is where Mum needs to be, rather than wants to be, it is a very positive experience and is a credit to this caring team who work there.

Unit runs like clockwork with some carers more, permanent carers needed. Less paperwork.
Bigger choice of food. More entertainment for some.
Reply from Clare Sheehan, Careline Advisor at Callands Care HomeThank you for your review, we value all feedback as this helps us to improve our service where required. Unfortunately, all care homes have a level of documentation that needs to be completed and this is to ensure that we deliver quality care at all times and can evidence this. The Chef and the kitchen staff are directed by HC-One regarding summer and winter menus and they are always accommodating and are happy to provide dishes to individual’s requests. We have reviewed our wellbeing hours this year and have found that we are now offering a wider variety including trips out; if there are any specific requests we would welcome suggestions in order for us to improve our service.

Reply from Clare Sheehan, Careline Advisor at Callands Care HomeThank you for your review, we value all feedback as this helps us to improve our service where required. It is always lovely to receive positive feedback; thank you for your kind comments on our staff team. I am however very sorry that you feel there is insufficient food choice. We have seasonal menus specially designed to offer high nutritional value using quality ingredients for our Residents and, where options are not selected, we do offer alternatives. With regard to the gardens, the grass is recently cut and other areas are being attended to. Please do liaise with the Home Manager for any concerns you may have so that they can be immediately addressed.

Would not recommend this care home for any family member. I was disgusted on my first visit as was let in by builders and could walk up without signing in and no reception. Organisation of whole staff was horrendous. Commode not emptied. My nan went in on a Friday and wasn't offered a wash once on her
respite visit, finally, a family member came and did it! Disgusting! Place generally untidy and trailing wires in her room. Staff unhelpful. Taken things out of room such as her own fan and nebulizer mask never to be seen again as no one knows where they are. My nan came in for 2 weeks respite and discharged herself it was that bad. I hope this improves for other's sakes.
Reply from Clare Sheehan, Care Advisor at Callands Care HomeI am sorry that you feel the service you have received has not been to the standard expected and I would like to thank you for taking the time to raise your concerns. There was a large amount of building work being undertaken and, unfortunately, there were occasions when workmen allowed Visitors to pass through and freely enter the building without access codes and we can only apologise for this, if this was brought to our attention we would have dealt with it immediately.
Regrettably, the trailing wires were caused by the two fans required by the Resident, as well as having a nebuliser plugged in, the Nurse advises she did suggest the fans were repositioned however they were required in a particular place. The Carer recalls helping with belongings to the vehicle at the end of Respite Care and we can advise that the fans and nebuliser were returned. Apologies for any distress this may have caused yourself or your Grandmother.

Current Review Score: 8.0 (7.951)

Overview of Review Score

The Review Score of 8.0 (7.951) out of 10 for Callands Care Home is based on a) the Average Rating and b) the number of positive Reviews.

  1. The Average Rating is 4.2 out of 5 from 9 Reviews in the last 24 months.
  2. The score for the number of positive Reviews is 3.8 out of 5 from 6 positive Reviews in the last 24 months.

Detailed Breakdown of Review Score

The maximum Review Score for a Care Home is 10, which is made up from the Average Rating of Reviews (maximum of 5 points) and the Number of Reviews (maximum of 5 points) in the last 24 months:

  1. 5 Points are available for the Average Rating from all Reviews in the last 24 months. The Average Rating of 4.151 for Callands Care Home is calculated as follows: ( (62 Excellents x 5) + (21 Goods x 4) + (8 Satisfactorys x 3) + (7 Poors x 2) + (8 Very Poors x 1) ) ÷ 106 Ratings = 4.151
  2. 5 Points are available for the number of Positive Reviews in the last 24 months. A Positive Review is defined as any Review with an 'Overall Experience' of '4' or '5' (out of a max rating '5'). The 3.8 Points relating to the number of positive Reviews for Callands Care Home is based on 6 positive Reviews in the last 24 months and is calculated as per below:

The 5 points available are broken down as follows:

    1. 4 points are available for the first 20 Positive Reviews in the last 24 months; 3 points for the first Positive Review, 0.125 Points for each of the next four Positive Reviews, 0.05 Points for the next five Positive Reviews, and finally 0.025 Points for the next ten Positive Reviews. (1st = 3.000, 2nd = 0.125, 3rd = 0.125, 4th = 0.125, 5th = 0.125, 6th = 0.050, 7th = 0.050, 8th = 0.050, 9th = 0.050, 10th = 0.050, 11th = 0.025, 12th = 0.025, 13th = 0.025, 14th = 0.025, 15th = 0.025, 16th = 0.025, 17th = 0.025, 18th = 0.025, 19th = 0.025, 20th = 0.025) 3 + 0.125 + 0.125 + 0.125 + 0.125 + 0.05 = 3.55
    2. 1 point is available for the number of Positive Reviews reaching 20% of the registered maximum number of service users in the last 24 months. If this number is partially reached, then that proportion of 1 point is given. eg a Care Home registered for a maximum of 50 service users has to reach 10 Positive Reviews to receive 1 point, if it has 7 reviews it will receive 0.7 points. 20% of the 120 registered maximum number of service users is 24. 6 Positive Reviews ÷ 24 = 0.25
  3. When a Review is submitted by someone who has previously submitted a Review, only the latest Review will count towards the Review Score.
  4. If a Care Home does not have a review in the last 24 months, then it will not have a Review Score.
