Callands Care Home in Warrington is a large, welcoming home offering residential, nursing, dementia, respite and specialist care for up to 120 residents. Part of the Dovehaven family, the home is designed around five smaller, household-style communities, helping create a calm, familiar and supportive environment where people can feel truly at home.

Each household has its own lounges and dining areas, with bright en-suite bedrooms that residents are encouraged to personalise with their own belongings. This helps create a real sense of identity, comfort and familiarity, while still offering access to the wider facilities across the home.

Care at Callands is delivered by an experienced and compassionate team who take time to get to know each person as an individual. Support is fully personalised to reflect routines, preferences and life history, with a strong focus on dignity, independence and wellbeing.

A key part of the home is the Coniston Unit, a dedicated male-only specialist service supporting men aged 21 and over with complex needs, including dementia, neurological conditions, mental health needs and physical disabilities. The unit provides a calm, structured environment where tailored care and meaningful activities help residents feel safe, understood and engaged in daily life.

Mealtimes are an important part of life at Callands, with freshly prepared, home-cooked food served in welcoming dining spaces. Residents are also supported to take part in a wide range of activities designed to promote wellbeing, encourage connection and bring enjoyment to everyday life.

With comfortable indoor spaces and secure outdoor areas, Callands Care Home offers a safe and supportive setting where residents are cared for with compassion, while continuing to live life in a way that feels right for them.

My husband could not have been cared for any better. The staff were wonderful. His last few months will be remembered by me as more than comfortable. Please convey my attitude to the staff.

The Lakes side staff look after me very well. I'm always kept clean and tidy with drinks given to me when I ask for them.
My room is always clean, thanks to the staff.

Initially, the care and support provided were of a good standard but this was not consistent or maintained,
some excellent staff are not always supported by those around them which is a shame.
The rooms are good and the food is excellent.
It is difficult to see information and to get updates.

My father would often tell me that a high majority of the CSW at Callands didn't listen to his needs and would, in particular, rush him when getting him up in a morning. There was one particular male staff member on nights at Callands who he said was always heavy handed with him.
I felt, being a nurse
myself (his son), that the nursing staff often did not pick up on health issues and often I had to raise these to them. I would be happy to go through these in more detail if you so wish. Also, he was only taken out once in 18 months. Not good enough.

The main thing I would like to highlight would be the staff on Windermere Wing of Callands Nursing Home. They were fantastic with my mum. Very caring, patient, trying to encourage her in activities and trying to get her to eat and drink when she was poorly. I can't praise them enough in my mum's last
days. So caring, so compassionate and looked after her right to the end and treated with dignity. Only small criticism would be the room could be updated but perfectly adequate and food could be bit more varied. She felt safe and secure.

My son died in hospital in November 2016 having been transferred from Callands.
The staff at Callands were very kind. My son had many problems and could only ingest purees with any safety. He was very frustrated because he could not walk. The staff were very encouraging and I don't think he could
have had better treatment anywhere else. My son did not want to take part in any activities.

The support and communication from the staff during her 'settling in' period and subsequently was marvellous. I can't speak highly enough about the level of patience, understanding and warmth exhibited by the staff; it was a pleasure to watch and marvel at.

After spending a month in hospital my mother was moved to Callands, the staff at Callands made us feel welcome straight away. All the staff were very caring. My mother was in Callands for her last week of her life, they made it very special, nothing was too much trouble. My mother passed away with care
and dignity thanks to the wonderful staff at Callands.

My father spent 18 months at Callands. He was treated with respect and dignity throughout his stay there. The staff were pleasant and caring, nothing was too much trouble for them. He was given his food at times that suited him rather than when it was meal times. I was notified immediately of any medication
that had been prescribed/any doctor visit, the odd times he rolled our of bed and got bruises. He has specialist furniture, ultra low bed and a recliner wheeled chair to help him to sit upright.

My mum was in Coniston wing at Callands for fourteen months, she was treated so well, the staff were brilliant they couldn't do enough for her. Unfortunately my mum died on the 10th of December 2015, but again throughout her illness the staff were superb they helped me and my family so much I cannot
thank them enough.

Again I would like to take this opportunity to thank all the staff, night and day for there help and understanding right up to her last day.

Many Many Thanks Jean and Family

Current Review Score: 8.0 (7.951)

Overview of Review Score

The Review Score of 8.0 (7.951) out of 10 for Callands Care Home is based on a) the Average Rating and b) the number of positive Reviews.

  1. The Average Rating is 4.2 out of 5 from 9 Reviews in the last 24 months.
  2. The score for the number of positive Reviews is 3.8 out of 5 from 6 positive Reviews in the last 24 months.

Detailed Breakdown of Review Score

The maximum Review Score for a Care Home is 10, which is made up from the Average Rating of Reviews (maximum of 5 points) and the Number of Reviews (maximum of 5 points) in the last 24 months:

  1. 5 Points are available for the Average Rating from all Reviews in the last 24 months. The Average Rating of 4.151 for Callands Care Home is calculated as follows: ( (62 Excellents x 5) + (21 Goods x 4) + (8 Satisfactorys x 3) + (7 Poors x 2) + (8 Very Poors x 1) ) ÷ 106 Ratings = 4.151
  2. 5 Points are available for the number of Positive Reviews in the last 24 months. A Positive Review is defined as any Review with an 'Overall Experience' of '4' or '5' (out of a max rating '5'). The 3.8 Points relating to the number of positive Reviews for Callands Care Home is based on 6 positive Reviews in the last 24 months and is calculated as per below:

The 5 points available are broken down as follows:

    1. 4 points are available for the first 20 Positive Reviews in the last 24 months; 3 points for the first Positive Review, 0.125 Points for each of the next four Positive Reviews, 0.05 Points for the next five Positive Reviews, and finally 0.025 Points for the next ten Positive Reviews. (1st = 3.000, 2nd = 0.125, 3rd = 0.125, 4th = 0.125, 5th = 0.125, 6th = 0.050, 7th = 0.050, 8th = 0.050, 9th = 0.050, 10th = 0.050, 11th = 0.025, 12th = 0.025, 13th = 0.025, 14th = 0.025, 15th = 0.025, 16th = 0.025, 17th = 0.025, 18th = 0.025, 19th = 0.025, 20th = 0.025) 3 + 0.125 + 0.125 + 0.125 + 0.125 + 0.05 = 3.55
    2. 1 point is available for the number of Positive Reviews reaching 20% of the registered maximum number of service users in the last 24 months. If this number is partially reached, then that proportion of 1 point is given. eg a Care Home registered for a maximum of 50 service users has to reach 10 Positive Reviews to receive 1 point, if it has 7 reviews it will receive 0.7 points. 20% of the 120 registered maximum number of service users is 24. 6 Positive Reviews ÷ 24 = 0.25
  3. When a Review is submitted by someone who has previously submitted a Review, only the latest Review will count towards the Review Score.
  4. If a Care Home does not have a review in the last 24 months, then it will not have a Review Score.
