St Mary’s Continuing Care is a purpose built Care Centre set in the semi-rural area of Burtonwood, near to the towns of Warrington and St Helens and close to local amenities.

St Mary’s has sixty-three beds in four separate units and specialises in catering for individuals suffering from Dementia, Continuing Care Mental Health, Acquired Brain Injury and Adult Complex Needs.

All rooms are single occupancy, en-suite and the aim of the Centre is to provide personalised care seeking to optimise service users' quality of life and, where possible, to support recovery and rehabilitation. St Mary’s promotes service users’ empowerment throughout the Centre by agreeing individual care plans and outcomes and ensuring a high level of involvement in determining and evaluating activities.

The Centre provides twenty-four hour nursing and care staffing as well as in house hotel services, activity staff and administration with the aim of making the service user's stay as pleasant as possible. This is complemented by a multidisciplinary team of other professionals including Psychiatrists, Psychologists, Physiotherapists, Chiropodists, Opticians and G.P.s.

My nan was accepted by St Mary’s after being previously cared for by another care home, which we felt wasn’t meeting the basic standards of care, and as a family, heard about the excellent reputation of St Mary’s, so we were delighted by the move and wasn’t disappointed. Within weeks, we felt like we
had our Nan back. Her hair, nails and clothes were the way she would have dressed herself, so you can tell that they are very person-centred in their approach to care.
She was eating better and not sleeping all day; she actually held a conversation with us.
Activities that were available for her to do were excellent, vast variety to do to suit everyone’s needs. Bingo, beauty afternoons and days out.

My mother has been in the care home for some time but has recently been supported with music therapy, and it has been so lovely to see her mood change. The nurses and care staff are so inviting and caring. I am also able to visit when I want, which is important to me and my mother.

My brother has always received very good care at St Mary's. This was especially so during the difficult time of Covid and care home lockdown. We are always kept informed of his state of health, treatment and needs.

So pleased Mum is able to live in such a happy, cheerful and caring environment on Forshaw Unit. She settled in so quickly, which is only thanks to a fully supportive and dedicated team of carers, who made her feel so settled and welcome, treating her with respect, and above all, dignity. As we visit,
we are welcomed into this happy environment, given fully up to date information on Mum's welfare, made to feel welcome. Though lockdown conditions, staff have been fully supportive of us ringing to check on Mum's welfare, nothing seems too much trouble for the wonderful staff on Forshaw Unit. We honestly couldn't wish for a nicer place for Mum to stay. Thank you so much to your amazingly cheerful team.

My dad had been in St Mary's Fern Unit for 7-years. In that time, I have found the home accommodating, and even though my dad had challenging behaviour, they coped very well. They involved me in all meetings in regard to my dad. It's like a lovely family, especially two particular members of staff amongst

Excellent care is being provided to one of my family members, who is a service user, and also, amazing service was given to my other family member who used to use the service. All staff are very friendly, caring and helpful and go the extra mile to treat your family members and yourself with 100% respect.
The care centre is always clean, tidy and very secure. I would recommend St Mary's to others who are looking at a care centre for family members or loved ones, as they are very well cared for and looked after.

My wife and I are former GPs, having retired in 2019 and 2017 respectively. We, therefore, have had experience of the level of care in a large number of nursing and residential homes over several decades. St Mary's is without any doubt, for us, the best Care Home we have ever encountered. The care staff
are very friendly, caring, and attentive to service users' needs. The nurses maintain an excellent standard of care and remain aware of any issues arising and deal with them appropriately and in a prompt manner when needed.
For example, our son, who is on the Brain Injury Unit, has had several critical medical events while resident here, and we cannot fault the prompt and professional way in which these problems were dealt with. The staff have also involved us as his parents in our son's care along the way.
On a lesser level - the food is excellent - our son says that the chef should have a Michelin star!

My brother moved to St Mary's in December 2018. I have got nothing but praise for the services he receives, very homely environment, very caring carers and staff. Andrew has been in St Mary's for a number of years. Although his physical condition has become very poor, the condition has become very poor. The level of care and attention shown to him is excellent and I could not fault it. All questions on or about his welfare are answered to the family's satisfaction

A very friendly environment and clean facilities. Residents are checked frequently and therefore they feel safe and secure. They can eat in their room if they wish to as sometimes they may feel under pressure eating in the dining room.
Activity trips are excellent and planned ahead.
Also, regular
outings to have a meal out are popular. Care staff have empathy with residents and work to a high standard.

Debbie Wareing

Job Title: Home Manager

Joined: 2005

From the age of 15 Deborah (Debbie) knew she wanted to be a Nurse when her own Mum became Mentally ill and required admission to a mental health hospital. Despite her age, she became very aware on visiting her Mum that the care in the hospital was not person centred or caring.
At the age of 18 she applied to Hollins Park Mental Health Hospital to undertake her Mental Health Nurse Training and was accepted. She was one of the youngest ever to have been accepted. Following qualifying she worked in Liverpool for many years as a Staff Nurse in a home for residents who are mentally ill and can be a risk to others, for example those on a Home Office Section for Life for a serious offence. She eventually became a Manager in the same home and had other homes to support and guide.
Eventually as her young family grew, she stepped away from management and worked nights as a Nurse at St Marys Care Centre, later becoming the Lead Nurse. As her children became older, she applied to be the Deputy Manager and then the Manager at St Marys Care Centre. Deborah has been the Manager at St Marys Care Centre since 2014. During this time the home has recruited an Art Therapist and a Music Therapist to compliment the homes Multi-Disciplinary Team.


Outside of work, Debbie lives in Warrington, has three sons and has been married for 30 years. She loves nothing more than spending time with her family, family holidays, walking and following Manchester City football team.

Paula Hughes

Job Title: Deputy Manager

Joined: 2015

Paula wanted to be a Nurse as a young girl. She regularly visited an elderly lady in Peasley Cross Hospital with her daughter, a neighbour of hers.
Paula began her training at 19 years of age in Warrington General hospital, qualifying in 1987, working with the elderly until she went to work at St Helens Hospital which was closer to home.
At St Helens Hospital Paula worked days on medical, rheumatology and later the stroke rehabilitation unit.
She also worked at Whiston Hospital on ENT and general medicine.
Following this she began a family and had 2 boys, she continued to work on night duty for a further seven years before leaving to work in the private sector.
Paula worked in Care Homes in both general and EMI as a Nurse and Deputy Manager. She relocated for 5 years with her family to Bognor Regis where she worked as a Deputy Manager, returning to St Helens in 2015 where she joined the team at St Marys Care Centre as Lead Nurse on Forshaw Unit. For the past two and a half years she is now enjoying her role as Deputy Manager.
In her spare time she enjoys spending time with her grandchildren, cooking travelling and gardening.


Nicky

Nicky Cunningham

Job Title: Administrator

Joined: 2012

After leaving school in 1995 Nicky worked as a Travel Consultant for an independent travel agency, later becoming the Store Manager – she worked in the travel industry for over 16 years. She had a Son in 2007 and a Daughter in 2008 and with the introduction of the internet putting the travel industry in decline and having a young family she wanted to look for a different line of work on a part time basis.
A local Care recruiting event took place and she picked up an application form and applied for a role doing Administration & Reception for a Retirement Housing Complex for over 55’s, she worked here from 2009 to 2012.
Nicky joined St Mary's Care Centre in 2012, initially joining on the ‘Bank’ working part time on Reception and eventually becoming the Home Administrator in 2016 which is the role she presently works in.
As a child Nicky enjoyed sports and used to play Rounders for St Helens first team and Boxing for St Helens UGB.
Nicky lives in St Helens and in her spare time, she loves to watch her son play football and socialise with friends and family. She also has a keen interest in anything paranormal!

I have now been practicing as a learning disability nurse for a number of years and my enthusiasm and passion for the job has not wavered.
My working career prior to nursing spans 25 years working in a variety of roles with children of all ages and abilities. From private nurseries, mainstream schools both here in the UK and military schools overseas, to a season as a Pontins Blue Coat!


I have recently gone back to doing what I am best at which I believe is being a nurse. I recently began a lead role in a nursing home in Burtonwood, Warrington. Running a small Acquired Brain Injury unit. Lots to do but a challenge I am up to doing. My vast knowledge base and transferable skill set will stand me in good stead am sure.


Previous roles include deputy manager and the manager but not for me! At a home in Preston. A challenge as the service was in transition. Service was for some very elderly, vulnerable individuals. With complex health needs. During my time there I was instrumental in making great headway and steering the service through some difficult times, and it has now just received a Good rating from CQC. Proud to have been part of its success.


I have a keen interest in keeping up to date with relevant news and issues within learning disability nursing, primarily through social media. I am part of an award-winning team. The primary role of the site is to offer guidance and advice from various sources to both qualified and student nurses. This is achieved via blogs, podcasts and film interviews and various other modes of media.

During Jennie’s time with us she has completed the following qualifications

Since leaving school Debbie attended St Helens College and trained as a Beauty Therapist whilst doing retail work but after completing her course and having a relative with dementia, she decided to explore working in care homes.
She has worked in the care sector for 20 years, initially working as a domestic in a previous care home. She joined St Mary's Care Centre in 2012 as a Domestic Assistant then in 2016 decided to take on the role as Receptionist where she had the opportunity to do inhouse training to gain further qualifications in Customer Services and Administration.
Outside of work Debbie enjoys family days out with her partner and 12-year-old daughter, country walks with the dog and theatre visits with friends and family.
