Ghyll Royd Care Home was acquired by Tony Spellman in 2001 and has since established a reputation for providing a calm and stable environment in Guiseley. Tucked away in a wooded area, the home is a place where residents can enjoy the natural surroundings and local wildlife. The home is unique in the area for offering both residential and nursing care under one roof, providing families with the reassurance that their loved ones can remain in familiar surroundings even if their needs change over time.

The care provided is rooted in the idea of continuity and comfort. This is particularly evident in the dementia communities, which feature identical layouts across different floors to help residents feel settled and secure. The team focuses on the small details that make a difference to daily life, ensuring that every person is treated with respect. Being a family-run home, Ghyll Royd maintains a direct, personal connection to the community it serves.

Part of the Spellman Care, Ghyll Royd benefits from being part of a group that views its residents as an extension of the Spellman family. The group’s philosophy is built on three core values — voted for by the residents and staff themselves — which ensure that kindness, dignity and compassion are at the heart of everything they do. This family-led oversight ensures a high level of accountability and a genuine commitment to quality of life.

My husband was at Ghyll Royd for 3 weeks at the end of his life. From first contacting the home, up to his death and after, the care and support given by the whole team has been wonderful. He (and we) were treated with dignity, care and compassion by the whole team from management to care team and nurses.
We have felt supported throughout what was a very difficult time. The nursing team managed his medical needs incredibly well, particularly through his last few days and we never felt like he was in any discomfort. I would highly recommend them to others.

Our dad lived in the Rowan community at Ghyll Royd for 4.5 months and we have nothing but good things to say about the caring and compassionate way he was looked after by the whole team. He settled in quickly and was very content living there. During Dad's last days, the support of the staff given to
both him and our family really helped us all.

Dad needed residential dementia nursing care urgently when discharged from hospital. We contacted Ghyll Royd and it was so impressive that they were able to assess him and admit him the same day for a respite period.
It was really good to see the staff in Beech so patient and caring with all the
residents and they were brilliant. The management worked well and did all they could to make arrangements as easy as possible all around.
The nursing care worked really well in getting his medication sorted and provided an excellent 'handover' as he left Ghyll Royd.
Unfortunately, Dad is unable to stay on at Ghyll Royd, though it was our preferred option.
I'd definitely recommend Ghyll Royd.

Staff are always polite, attentive and caring to residents or visitors. They promptly contact me by phone or e-mail regarding any issues that concern the well-being of my mother.
I'm so glad that she is well looked after, as she has looked after everybody else in our family all her life. It is of
great peace of mind to me that she resides at Ghyll Royd.
Thank you and keep up the good work.

Such a caring team of staff looking after my mother-in-law in the last few months of her life.
When her time to leave us came, the calm support was very welcome.
It was very touching to see how upset the staff were. It felt like we were all family together.

My mother-in-law was well looked after with the staff taking time to get to know her. Her nursing needs were complex however the staff confidently dealt with these needs taking time to explain to us what they were doing and why. No question was a "silly question."
All staff took time with her and listened
to her whether making her bed or administering medication. The stimulus from activities ensured she thrived and had fun.
The staff listened to her and treated her wishes with respect and accommodated what she requested.

During my mum's stay at Ghyll Royd she has received excellent support and care in terms of personal needs and health.
Staff have been open and honest about Mum's needs and have supported not just Mum but the whole family. The nursing care has been first-rate and they have carefully monitored Mum's
diabetic conditions.
"Nursing team first-rate."

My mother is in the residential dementia unit - Blossom.
I have found all the staff have been welcoming, kind and considerate towards me and to my mother who has settled in very quickly and is happy.
The home has a culture of professionalism and competence led from the top. The standards of care
are high and I can see the daily care and meals she receives on my phone through the online portal. Attention is given to the detail of her personal care plan to get it right and includes dispensing her supplements!
A choice of communal spaces provides variety and the activities are provided most days. The vegetarian menu reflects specific requests I have made with a variety of home-cooked meals. The beds have high-quality memory foam type mattresses. Relatives can visit at any time without notice.
All in all Ghyll Royd has provided everything I was hoping to find for my mother and for the first time I have been able to relax and to not worry. Thank you everyone. Highly recommended.

No words of ours can fully express our gratitude for the superb care our mum, received from you and your wonderful staff. Nothing was too much trouble and everyone was always willing to go above and beyond, to make her comfortable and safe, and help her to reach so close to her 104th birthday!
We were
especially grateful, and very moved by, the help and loving care you gave her and her family during her final days. It really helped us all to cope in the final stages of her life.
We will keep in touch with the brilliant people who befriended us during her time with you. Thank you all so very much.
Reply from Nichola Harrison, Home Manager at Ghyll Royd Care HomeThank you so much for this heartfelt review. It is an absolute honour to care for people's loved ones to the end of their life, and for your mum to get to the grand age that she did and still have that checky character and self-awareness of beauty was admiring. Supporting our relatives during the palliative stage is something we take pride in and feel we do really well and always strive to improve our service where we can.

My mum is now at a point where she needs total care for everything. I am sure she is aware of her surroundings and her situation but can no longer vocalise or do anything herself. I live 200 miles away and visit as often as I can and every time I leave knowing that she is getting the best of care and
is treated with dignity and respect. I can not fault the staff looking after her and they treat her as they would their own. She is in the best place she could be.

We really wish we had got our Dad into Ghyll Royd sooner than we did, the thought of having to put him in a home was daunting enough but from the first day, our minds were at rest. The staff were absolutely brilliant, so kind and gentle with Dad and attentive to his every need. They also made us feel
so welcome and nothing was too much trouble. Although Dad's stay was short we as a family saw a huge difference in his whole attitude. We will forever be grateful to all the staff at Ghyll Royd for making Dad's stay a pleasant and comfortable one.

My mum has been a resident at Ghyll Royd for over a month now. The whole team on Blossom have been welcoming and keen to learn her likes, dislikes and care needs. She settled in really quickly. The team clearly work well together and the residents feel like part of a family. I would recommend Ghyll
Royd as the carers really do care about the residents. My mum isn’t in the best of health, so if there is any cause for concern, the team act straight away and keep me fully informed. A special mention to three members of staff, in particular, who have shown a genuine concern for Mum’s welfare. They offer comfort when she is anxious and struggling. They manage to get my mum smiling with their positive approach and she is very settled and calm in their company. I highly recommend this home.

We could not have chosen a better care home than Ghyll Royd for my father-in-law. He was welcomed into Ghyll Royd like a member of the family, as we were too. The care he received on Beech, the dementia unit was second to none. He was treated with such love and kindness by every member of the team.
We could not have got through the final days of his life without the truly amazing team on Beech. We will never be able to thank them enough for all the love and care they gave both him and us as a family. He died peacefully on 10th November.

My mum was a resident until sadly passing away recently. I visited her almost every day and was always greeted with courtesy, updates on her health and with friendly banter from the nurses. My mum was always treated with kindness and compassion if she was feeling unwell, and made friends of the staff
and nurses. She was loved by all, who looked after her and she loved them too. Unfortunately, she wasn't able to walk due to an arthritic knee but tried to remain upbeat. She didn't have much of an appetite but the nurses tried to encourage her to eat and most days the chef catered to her preference. All in all, although Mum did yearn to go home, Ghyll Royd was the perfect nursing home and it has been a godsend she was cared for so professionally and gave us peace of mind.

Current Review Score: 9.8 (9.824)

Overview of Review Score

The Review Score of 9.8 (9.824) out of 10 for Ghyll Royd Care Home is based on a) the Average Rating and b) the number of positive Reviews.

  1. The Average Rating is 4.8 out of 5 from 32 Reviews in the last 24 months.
  2. The score for the number of positive Reviews is 5.0 out of 5 from 32 positive Reviews in the last 24 months.

Detailed Breakdown of Review Score

The maximum Review Score for a Care Home is 10, which is made up from the Average Rating of Reviews (maximum of 5 points) and the Number of Reviews (maximum of 5 points) in the last 24 months:

  1. 5 Points are available for the Average Rating from all Reviews in the last 24 months. The Average Rating of 4.824 for Ghyll Royd Care Home is calculated as follows: ( (308 Excellents x 5) + (57 Goods x 4) + (4 Satisfactorys x 3) ) ÷ 369 Ratings = 4.824
  2. 5 Points are available for the number of Positive Reviews in the last 24 months. A Positive Review is defined as any Review with an 'Overall Experience' of '4' or '5' (out of a max rating '5'). The 5 Points relating to the number of positive Reviews for Ghyll Royd Care Home is based on 32 positive Reviews in the last 24 months and is calculated as per below:

The 5 points available are broken down as follows:

    1. 4 points are available for the first 20 Positive Reviews in the last 24 months; 3 points for the first Positive Review, 0.125 Points for each of the next four Positive Reviews, 0.05 Points for the next five Positive Reviews, and finally 0.025 Points for the next ten Positive Reviews. (1st = 3.000, 2nd = 0.125, 3rd = 0.125, 4th = 0.125, 5th = 0.125, 6th = 0.050, 7th = 0.050, 8th = 0.050, 9th = 0.050, 10th = 0.050, 11th = 0.025, 12th = 0.025, 13th = 0.025, 14th = 0.025, 15th = 0.025, 16th = 0.025, 17th = 0.025, 18th = 0.025, 19th = 0.025, 20th = 0.025) 3 + 0.125 + 0.125 + 0.125 + 0.125 + 0.05 + 0.05 + 0.05 + 0.05 + 0.05 + 0.025 + 0.025 + 0.025 + 0.025 + 0.025 + 0.025 + 0.025 + 0.025 + 0.025 + 0.025 = 4
    2. 1 point is available for the number of Positive Reviews reaching 20% of the registered maximum number of service users in the last 24 months. If this number is partially reached, then that proportion of 1 point is given. eg a Care Home registered for a maximum of 50 service users has to reach 10 Positive Reviews to receive 1 point, if it has 7 reviews it will receive 0.7 points. 20% of the 76 registered maximum number of service users is 15.2, which has been reached with 32 Positive reviews. Points = 1
  3. When a Review is submitted by someone who has previously submitted a Review, only the latest Review will count towards the Review Score.
  4. If a Care Home does not have a review in the last 24 months, then it will not have a Review Score.

My nursing career began back in 2010 in the Philippines. Before moving into hands-on care, I worked for a multinational company handling vaccines for both the public and private sectors. That experience taught me the importance of being dependable and precise, qualities I carry with me every day here at Ghyll Royd.

I first joined the Ghyll Royd family in June 2022 as a Senior Carer. After passing my OSCE in October that year, I jumped straight into life as a Staff Nurse, working both day and night shifts to get to know our residents inside and out. I was proud to be promoted to Unit Manager of Beech in November 2023, and it was a true honour to progress to the role of Home Manager.

I take great pride in upholding our core values of Kindness, Dignity, and Compassion. To me, providing exceptional care means maintaining a service that is modern, proactive, and forward-thinking. Transparency is at the heart of everything we do; I believe it is vital that relatives are always kept fully up-to-date with the status of their loved ones, ensuring peace of mind for the whole family.

I am also incredibly keen to build strong connections within our local community. My goal is to support all those who need it, including those who may not yet be residents at Ghyll Royd. I believe that if someone is already familiar with our home and our team, it makes for a much more comfortable and seamless transition should they ever need to move in. I have always believed in "changing for the better", and I view any setbacks simply as lessons to learn from. Ultimately, I strive to be a reliable, steady hand for our residents and their families.

On my days off, I’m all about balance. I love spending time with my family, hitting the gym, or playing a game of basketball. I’m also a student of Stoicism and enjoy a bit of investing. I find that the discipline I use in my hobbies helps me stay focused and calm in my professional life, too!

I always knew I wanted to be a nurse. After receiving a diagnosis of diabetes at a young age and spending significant time in the hospital, I found myself deeply moved by the compassion of the nurses who looked after me. They inspired me to turn my own patient experience into a lifelong career dedicated to helping others, and I have never looked back.

My journey began with 14 years of dedicated service within the NHS, which provided me with a strong clinical foundation before I transitioned into the private sector to manage day surgery. For the last 15 years, I have committed myself entirely to social care, progressing through roles as a Unit Manager, Clinical Services Manager, and Home Manager. This varied background has given me a 360-degree view of what excellent care looks like, and I was thrilled to bring that experience to the team here at Ghyll Royd when I joined in February 2026.

What I enjoy most about my work is that no two days are ever the same. The fast-paced nature of a care home keeps me motivated, but it is the ability to make a tangible difference in the lives of our residents that truly drives me every day.

When I am not at home, I love to escape the busy nature of work by spending quality time with my children and my family. You will often find us out in the fresh air, enjoying long walks with the dog and making the most of our time together.
