My wife is bed-bound. She cannot take part in any activities because her bed cannot pass through the door! Hence, she is isolated for most of the time. This is most frustrating for her (and me). Generally, she is well cared for, most of the time. Obviously I cannot comment on the care when I am not
at the home, but all seems to be satisfactory. If my wife was able to exit her room, she would, I am sure, get a substantial lift in her life.
Reply from Karen Hey, Manager at St Mary's Care CentreThank you, Jim, for your review, and we all appreciate how frustrating it is for you both since you have been unable to visit her daily.
She does love your daily letters, photos and flowers from the garden, and chats at the window.
Let's hope it won't be too much longer before you can be reunited.

The manager and her team at St Marys have been part of mum’s life for the past 5 years. During this time the care team have treated her with love, kindness and consideration to the highest standard and we as a family are truly grateful. The home is beautifully decorated and exceptionally clean, always
making it a pleasure to visit. She is regularly encouraged to be part of the activities the home offer but also shown respect when she wishes to be alone. She is very settled and happy with her environment and always speaks very highly of everyone within the team.
At the outbreak of the Coronavirus pandemic, it was reassuring to see the home acting swiftly to put appropriate measures in place to keep their residents safe. We have been able to book Skype calls to ensure communication continues and we are confident she is being well looked after during this time.
We would highly recommend St Marys Care Centre.
Reply from Karen Hey, Manager at St Mary's Care CentreThank you, Amanda, for your kind review of our service. The staff have worked exceptionally hard to keep all our residents safe during the pandemic, and we are all grateful that our measures have been recognized and appreciated by you. It has truly been a whole team effort.

St Mary's appears to be a very well run care home. The food always looks appetising and the menus are varied. My mum is happy and settled and well cared for. I have been very impressed with how the home has coped with the coronavirus pandemic. They enforced lockdown very promptly and their diligence
has proved very beneficial. The receptionist is always very helpful and mum enjoys the activities.
Reply from Karen Hey, Manager at St Mary's Care CentreThank you for your kind comments and for recognising the enormous efforts made by the staff to protect all our resident's from Covid 19.

My mother has been a resident for approx 18 months and we are very content with the level of service provided. The transition to a care home should not be underestimated however all the staff provided great support through this period. They are always available to assist as are the reception staff.
This is a modern building, purpose built, all on one floor which makes it easy for residents to get around. The gardens are well maintained and ideal for sitting out if only the weather was better. There are a number of activities for residents and they can be as busy or quiet as they like.
Reply from Karen Hey, Manager at St Mary's Care CentreThank you for your kind and generous review of our service. Resident's who come to us directly from their own homes can often find it difficult to adjust to a more communal way of living, and they and their families frequently need additional support. Thank you for recognizing the important role staff have during this transition period.

I currently visit 2 elderly friends who have been residents for a few months and are extremely content there. There are always activities in which they enjoy participating. Also, my mother was a resident there for 7 months (she died 18 months ago) and again she and we were very pleased with the care
she was given. The home has a very welcoming environment, the food is good, there are lovely gardens where they grow some food and the residents can help if they wish.

I have been a visitor to many homes in this area over the past few years and this is the only one I would recommend.

Reply from Karen Hey, Manager at St Mary's Care CentreThank you, Margaret, for such a wonderful review. The whole team work so hard to provide a positive experience for all our resident's and their families, and it's so nice of you to recognize this and be willing to share your experience with others.

The admission of a loved one to a care home is usually a last resort, as it was in our case, when my father could no longer look after himself and his family were unable to meet all of his needs satisfactorily.
It is a daunting prospect but we were fortunate enough to have St. Mary’s nearby.
My father
was a resident of St. Mary's Care Centre for five and a half years as a result of advanced Parkinson’s Disease.
St. Mary’s appealed as it is a modern, purpose built, single storey building. This suited my father’s mobility issues and meant that he could use a motorised wheelchair relatively easily.
During the five and a half years, my father received very good care and formed good relationships with the staff. One thing that did strike me was how low the staff turnover was at St. Mary’s. Many of the carers and other members of staff who were there at the beginning are still there which is highly beneficial for both residents and family.
Reply from Karen Hey, Manager at St Mary's Care CentreThank you Angela for your kind and generous review of the care your father received, and for recognizing the importance of low staff turnover in maintaining high standards of care.

My 91 year old dad, who had lived with myself and my husband for the last 12 years, went into St Mary's care home in May after we found it too difficult to give him the 24 hour care he needed. From the outset, the staff were wonderful with him. Nothing was ever too much trouble and nothing fazed them.
In the short time he was there (he sadly died two weeks ago) they not only looked after him but gave him love and attention and made me feel that he was special to them. Although he was very frail he built up a lovely rapport with all the staff.
I have nothing but praise for the staff in the home and I know they made my dad’s final few months as comfortable and as happy as possible.
Thank you.

Current Review Score: 9.8 (9.816)

Overview of Review Score

The Review Score of 9.8 (9.816) out of 10 for St Mary's Care Centre is based on a) the Average Rating and b) the number of positive Reviews.

  1. The Average Rating is 4.8 out of 5 from 30 Reviews in the last 24 months.
  2. The score for the number of positive Reviews is 5.0 out of 5 from 30 positive Reviews in the last 24 months.

Detailed Breakdown of Review Score

The maximum Review Score for a Care Home is 10, which is made up from the Average Rating of Reviews (maximum of 5 points) and the Number of Reviews (maximum of 5 points) in the last 24 months:

  1. 5 Points are available for the Average Rating from all Reviews in the last 24 months. The Average Rating of 4.816 for St Mary's Care Centre is calculated as follows: ( (294 Excellents x 5) + (45 Goods x 4) + (8 Satisfactorys x 3) + (1 Poors x 2) ) ÷ 348 Ratings = 4.816
  2. 5 Points are available for the number of Positive Reviews in the last 24 months. A Positive Review is defined as any Review with an 'Overall Experience' of '4' or '5' (out of a max rating '5'). The 5 Points relating to the number of positive Reviews for St Mary's Care Centre is based on 30 positive Reviews in the last 24 months and is calculated as per below:

The 5 points available are broken down as follows:

    1. 4 points are available for the first 20 Positive Reviews in the last 24 months; 3 points for the first Positive Review, 0.125 Points for each of the next four Positive Reviews, 0.05 Points for the next five Positive Reviews, and finally 0.025 Points for the next ten Positive Reviews. (1st = 3.000, 2nd = 0.125, 3rd = 0.125, 4th = 0.125, 5th = 0.125, 6th = 0.050, 7th = 0.050, 8th = 0.050, 9th = 0.050, 10th = 0.050, 11th = 0.025, 12th = 0.025, 13th = 0.025, 14th = 0.025, 15th = 0.025, 16th = 0.025, 17th = 0.025, 18th = 0.025, 19th = 0.025, 20th = 0.025) 3 + 0.125 + 0.125 + 0.125 + 0.125 + 0.05 + 0.05 + 0.05 + 0.05 + 0.05 + 0.025 + 0.025 + 0.025 + 0.025 + 0.025 + 0.025 + 0.025 + 0.025 + 0.025 + 0.025 = 4
    2. 1 point is available for the number of Positive Reviews reaching 20% of the registered maximum number of service users in the last 24 months. If this number is partially reached, then that proportion of 1 point is given. eg a Care Home registered for a maximum of 50 service users has to reach 10 Positive Reviews to receive 1 point, if it has 7 reviews it will receive 0.7 points. 20% of the 60 registered maximum number of service users is 12, which has been reached with 30 Positive reviews. Points = 1
  3. When a Review is submitted by someone who has previously submitted a Review, only the latest Review will count towards the Review Score.
  4. If a Care Home does not have a review in the last 24 months, then it will not have a Review Score.
