Berwick Grange provides nursing dementia, residential dementia, palliative and short-stay care for up to 52 residents in a purpose-built home in the spa town of Harrogate.

Just a short walk from The Stray park, the home offers residents a peaceful setting close to local cafés, garden centres and the town’s historic attractions. I have always found the staff to be friendly, kind and welcoming and the operational process and practices in the home, transparent and open. I have been impressed with how staff engage with and assist residents, even when those efforts are not appreciated by the resident. This can be a very difficult
job, it involves hard work and stamina; it is often invisible to the outside world and is undervalued as a result. Those working at Berwick Grange, rise above these obstacles and show a high level of commitment and professionalism. I would like to take this opportunity to praise the care provided by all staff at Berwick Grange and to assure them that although they may have felt abandoned by some of the outside world in recent months, they have been in the thoughts of those relying on them to look after our family members. I am happy to recommend Berwick Grange.

As a person with very aggressive dementia, my husband has settled in fairly well - even though his speech and understanding is rubbish, all the staff have shown patience and care when helping hime and have made him feel at home. He really enjoys the music therapy and 'singing' hymns.

Dad has been at Berwick Grange for about two months. The care he has received has been wonderful. His dementia can change literally from day to day but the team recognise this and adopt his care needs accordingly.
As dad was ill one Sunday I spent the whole day with him. It made me realise how all
the staff work so hard and their love and kindness towards their residents is wonderful.
I feel more guidance is needed for the agency staff as I saw one lad sit in the lounge for one and a half hours doing nothing but reading the paper and watching television!

I have been impressed with the manner in which the carers look after the people in their care. They do not assume they can do as they like but treat each individual with care and respect. Their manner is firm but courteous and they ensure that each person is helped as far as it is in their ability to
do so.

I have known this hospital for several years. As a civil engineer, I was involved in the construction of the extension. The hospital management and the team advised me for the work. I love the management team. At 90+ I wish everyone a blissful life with Lord's blessings.

My mother was at Berwick Grange for 7 years and she always got the best care. I know most of the staff and more importantly, they all knew my mother, not always the case in some homes.
When my mother died the staff were all kind and considerate and made sure mum had a peaceful end.

I am pleased that my husband is at Berwick Grange. I find he is clean, appropriately dressed and seems comfortable. The staff treat him as an individual with particular needs, are kind and extremely patient. The activities provided are fewer than they were, that is a pity. But he, himself, would no
longer benefit from those he did before his Alzheimers disease worsened.

I thought Berwick Grange was a superb care home which I thoroughly enjoyed visiting my Grandad in. We would always be greeted with a warm welcome by the staff. My Grandad would always have a laugh with the carers and enjoyed chatting them and they were able to put up with him being stubborn! All the
residents seemed content. I would recommend this care home for all round care and support for the family who are welcome at all times and can get involved with their frequent events.
Reply from Siva Sivanandarajah, Home Manager at Berwick GrangeThank you for your kind words which have been shared with the team at Berwick Grange. I’m glad your Grandfather enjoyed his time with us. We are working to improve the ‘Cleanliness’ and ‘Food and Drink’ ratings from satisfactory to good or hopefully excellent. Additional Housekeepers are being recruited to maintain the environment and new snack boxes have been introduced on all floors which have received positive feedback and of course, residents are still given a variety of options at meal times.

My mother was a resident for nearly four years at this home. She received excellent care during this time and was treated with both dignity and a very friendly manager. The home itself is a bright, spotlessly clean and attractive place with a large selection of activities. The staff are knowledgeable,
kind and warm in their approach.

My Mum became a resident of this wonderful care home in May 2015 having been cared for by my Dad, with help from me for over 6 years. It was a heartbreaking decision but Dad at 91 was both physically and mentally exhausted. Having looked at 4 other dementia care homes, walking through the doors at Berwick
Grange was for us such a relief. We immediately felt the warmth and compassion of the staff and the spacious comfortable open plan lounge/dining room was buzzing with activity. She loved the varied musical entertainment. We could visit anytime, greeted with updates on Mum who was always clean, fresh and dressed appropriately in her favourite clothes. Her personal needs were tended to gently and with absolute dignity; she was safe and enjoyed excellent well-presented food.
The management and staff were second to none. Mum's eyes had always shone with trust for them and in the last 8 weeks of her life, I really understood why - the staff genuinely and wholeheartedly cared. Thank you.

My mother is aged 88 and has been a resident at Berwick Grange for 6 months. The welcome for her and visiting family has been exceptional. The atmosphere, care and provision for residents is something special. An activities programme is published weekly and residents are encouraged/helped to participate.
The improvement in my mother in the 6 months she has been at Berwick Grange is very noticeable. She is happy, less agitated and generally more 'with it'. Staff morale appears to be high and I am impressed with the level of training staff receive and their ability to engage/employ strategies to engage with residents. I visit at different times/days. I feel my mother is treated as a person.

My husband was treated very well the day he was transferred from the hospital to the nursing home. He wasn't very pleasant to the people who were helping him but they got on with the job of getting him sorted and into bed. The staff throughout are very cheerful and helpful and nothing is too much trouble
for them. My husband has settled down now and seems very happy where he is.

Current Review Score: 9.6 (9.606)

Overview of Review Score

The Review Score of 9.6 (9.606) out of 10 for Berwick Grange is based on a) the Average Rating and b) the number of positive Reviews.

  1. The Average Rating is 4.8 out of 5 from 11 Reviews in the last 24 months.
  2. The score for the number of positive Reviews is 4.8 out of 5 from 11 positive Reviews in the last 24 months.

Detailed Breakdown of Review Score

The maximum Review Score for a Care Home is 10, which is made up from the Average Rating of Reviews (maximum of 5 points) and the Number of Reviews (maximum of 5 points) in the last 24 months:

  1. 5 Points are available for the Average Rating from all Reviews in the last 24 months. The Average Rating of 4.831 for Berwick Grange is calculated as follows: ( (109 Excellents x 5) + (20 Goods x 4) + (1 Satisfactorys x 3) ) ÷ 130 Ratings = 4.831
  2. 5 Points are available for the number of Positive Reviews in the last 24 months. A Positive Review is defined as any Review with an 'Overall Experience' of '4' or '5' (out of a max rating '5'). The 4.775 Points relating to the number of positive Reviews for Berwick Grange is based on 11 positive Reviews in the last 24 months and is calculated as per below:

The 5 points available are broken down as follows:

    1. 4 points are available for the first 20 Positive Reviews in the last 24 months; 3 points for the first Positive Review, 0.125 Points for each of the next four Positive Reviews, 0.05 Points for the next five Positive Reviews, and finally 0.025 Points for the next ten Positive Reviews. (1st = 3.000, 2nd = 0.125, 3rd = 0.125, 4th = 0.125, 5th = 0.125, 6th = 0.050, 7th = 0.050, 8th = 0.050, 9th = 0.050, 10th = 0.050, 11th = 0.025, 12th = 0.025, 13th = 0.025, 14th = 0.025, 15th = 0.025, 16th = 0.025, 17th = 0.025, 18th = 0.025, 19th = 0.025, 20th = 0.025) 3 + 0.125 + 0.125 + 0.125 + 0.125 + 0.05 + 0.05 + 0.05 + 0.05 + 0.05 + 0.025 = 3.775
    2. 1 point is available for the number of Positive Reviews reaching 20% of the registered maximum number of service users in the last 24 months. If this number is partially reached, then that proportion of 1 point is given. eg a Care Home registered for a maximum of 50 service users has to reach 10 Positive Reviews to receive 1 point, if it has 7 reviews it will receive 0.7 points. 20% of the 52 registered maximum number of service users is 10.4, which has been reached with 11 Positive reviews. Points = 1
  3. When a Review is submitted by someone who has previously submitted a Review, only the latest Review will count towards the Review Score.
  4. If a Care Home does not have a review in the last 24 months, then it will not have a Review Score.
