Berwick Grange provides nursing dementia, residential dementia, palliative and short-stay care for up to 52 residents in a purpose-built home in the spa town of Harrogate.

Just a short walk from The Stray park, the home offers residents a peaceful setting close to local cafés, garden centres and the town’s historic attractions. Inside, the home is arranged over three floors, with smaller household-style communities that support familiarity and connection. All bedrooms are single occupancy with en-suite facilities.

The secure landscaped gardens feature raised beds, shaded seating, and a courtyard patio—ideal for gentle gardening, wildlife watching or enjoying a quiet cup of tea. Residents are encouraged to stay involved outdoors, with vegetable patches and seasonal planting.

Meals are freshly prepared on site using high-quality ingredients. Menus include traditional favourites like roast dinners, stews and cottage pies, with input from residents. Mealtimes are enhanced with themed days, seasonal tastings and birthday celebrations with personalised cakes.

Life at Berwick Grange includes music therapy, arts and crafts, Tiny Tablet activities, and sensory support. Regular trips to Harrogate and special events like Seize the Day experiences ensure every resident can stay active, engaged and connected to their interests.

At Berwick Grange, care isn’t just about support, it’s about creating a community where residents thrive. Whether you’re searching for yourself or a loved one, for nursing dementia, residential dementia, palliative or short-stay care, the team at Berwick Grange are here to help.

Staff friendly and helpful.
Food adequate choice, large helpings.
Accommodation good in most respects.
Build quality lacking in some respects due to poor sub-contractors.
Cost fairly high and increasing annually.
Residential living used to subsidise care homes. Not fair.

Thank you for your comments dated 15th June.
I am pleased that you feel there is an adequate choice of food as this is very important for the well being of our residents. Our kitchen staff work very hard to ensure we have a varied menu and to meet residents personal choices and their dietary needs.
Unfortunately I am unable to comment on the build quality. We do use sub contractors they are vetted through our estates teams and they do give feedback and monitor the quality of the work carried out in the homes.
To date I am unaware of any concerns regarding the quality of work from contractors, or concerns around fees, however we would be happy to discuss any such concerns if raised in the home or through our robust complaints policy, how to do this is displayed in the home.

The staff here are caring and work very hard in taking care of the residents. However I feel they are constantly short staffed, especially at holiday times or if one of them is off for some reason. It is hard to treat people with dignity when the nature of the care required individuals constant care
for their toilet requirements. My husband finds this the most difficult part. Overall I think a few extra staff would improve things - allowing time to contact each resident in a friendly way which they have not always time to do (e.g. talking to them).

I could not wish my mum to be in a nicer home! I can leave her content in the knowledge that she is safe and well cared for. There are plenty of activities taking place and all the residents are encouraged to take part. The staff are friendly and know the residents well. The staff are all long term,
there is low staff turn over meaning there is good continuity of care. Overall I give the home 10 out of 10!

Current Review Score: 9.0 (9.038)

Overview of Review Score

The Review Score of 9.0 (9.038) out of 10 for Berwick Grange is based on a) the Average Rating and b) the number of positive Reviews.

  • a) The Average Rating is 4.9 out of 5 from 6 Reviews in the last 24 months.

  • b) The score for the number of positive Reviews is 4.2 out of 5 from 6 positive Reviews in the last 24 months.

Detailed Breakdown of Review Score

The maximum Review Score for a Care Home is 10, which is made up from the Average Rating of Reviews (maximum of 5 points) and the Number of Reviews (maximum of 5 points) in the last 24 months:

  • a) 5 Points are available for the Average Rating from all Reviews in the last 24 months.

    The Average Rating of 4.861 for Berwick Grange is calculated as follows: ( (62 Excellents x 5) + (10 Goods x 4) ) ÷ 72 Ratings = 4.861

  • b) 5 Points are available for the number of Positive Reviews in the last 24 months. A Positive Review is defined as any Review with an 'Overall Experience' of '4' or '5' (out of a max rating '5').

The 4.177 Points relating to the number of positive Reviews for Berwick Grange is based on 6 positive Reviews in the last 24 months and is calculated as per below:

The 5 points available are broken down as follows:

    • i) 4 points are available for the first 10 Positive Reviews in the last 24 months; 3 points for the first Positive Review, and then 0.125 Points for each of the next four Positive Reviews and then 0.1 Points for the next five Positive Reviews. (1st = 3.000, 2nd = 0.125, 3rd = 0.125, 4th = 0.125, 5th = 0.125, 6th = 0.100, 7th = 0.100, 8th = 0.100, 9th = 0.100, 10th = 0.100) 3 + 0.125 + 0.125 + 0.125 + 0.125 + 0.1 = 3.6

    • ii) 1 point is available for the number of Positive Reviews reaching 20% of the registered maximum number of service users in the last 24 months. If this number is partially reached, then that proportion of 1 point is given. eg a Care Home registered for a maximum of 50 service users has to reach 10 Positive Reviews to receive 1 point, if it has 7 reviews it will receive 0.7 points. 20% of the 52 registered maximum number of service users is 10.4. 6 Positive Reviews ÷ 10.4 = 0.577

  • When a Review is submitted by someone who has previously submitted a Review, only the latest Review will count towards the Review Score.

  • If a Care Home does not have a review in the last 24 months, then it will not have a Review Score.
