The Willows care home provides specialist nursing, residential and dementia care for older people on a respite or permanent basis. Designed for purpose, the home offers ensuite bedrooms that have been set up to ensure privacy and comfort.

The care team is experienced, dedicated and highly skilled. Most of the team has been with the home for many years so there’s always a smile and familiar face for residents and their relatives.

Situated within a quiet, residential area of Middlesbrough, next to the Woodside Memory Clinic and close to James Cook University Hospital, The Willows is easily accessible. The home enjoys a relaxed atmosphere, and outside, the attractive courtyards have plenty of sitting areas and a sensory garden.

Overall Experience 4.0 out of 5
My husband became a resident at The Willows on August 9th 2015. He suffered with Alzheimer's Disease an had a chronic kidney problem. I found the staff courteous and kind at all times any deterioration in his condition was picked up on and the doctor called out to examine him. On the 25th Feb he had
to go into hospital to be hydrated, unfortunately his condition deteriorated whist in hospital and he passed away on 4th March 2016.

Overview of Review Score

The Review Score of 9.4 (9.383) out of 10 for The Willows is based on a) the Average Rating and b) the number of positive Reviews.

  1. The Average Rating is 4.9 out of 5 from 9 Reviews in the last 24 months.
  2. The score for the number of positive Reviews is 4.5 out of 5 from 9 positive Reviews in the last 24 months.

Detailed Breakdown of Review Score

The maximum Review Score for a Care Home is 10, which is made up from the Average Rating of Reviews (maximum of 5 points) and the Number of Reviews (maximum of 5 points) in the last 24 months:

  1. 5 Points are available for the Average Rating from all Reviews in the last 24 months. The Average Rating of 4.933 for The Willows is calculated as follows: ( (98 Excellents x 5) + (5 Goods x 4) + (1 Satisfactorys x 3) ) ÷ 104 Ratings = 4.933
  2. 5 Points are available for the number of Positive Reviews in the last 24 months. A Positive Review is defined as any Review with an 'Overall Experience' of '4' or '5' (out of a max rating '5'). The 4.45 Points relating to the number of positive Reviews for The Willows is based on 9 positive Reviews in the last 24 months and is calculated as per below:

The 5 points available are broken down as follows:

    1. 4 points are available for the first 20 Positive Reviews in the last 24 months; 3 points for the first Positive Review, 0.125 Points for each of the next four Positive Reviews, 0.05 Points for the next five Positive Reviews, and finally 0.025 Points for the next ten Positive Reviews. (1st = 3.000, 2nd = 0.125, 3rd = 0.125, 4th = 0.125, 5th = 0.125, 6th = 0.050, 7th = 0.050, 8th = 0.050, 9th = 0.050, 10th = 0.050, 11th = 0.025, 12th = 0.025, 13th = 0.025, 14th = 0.025, 15th = 0.025, 16th = 0.025, 17th = 0.025, 18th = 0.025, 19th = 0.025, 20th = 0.025) 3 + 0.125 + 0.125 + 0.125 + 0.125 + 0.05 + 0.05 + 0.05 + 0.05 = 3.7
    2. 1 point is available for the number of Positive Reviews reaching 20% of the registered maximum number of service users in the last 24 months. If this number is partially reached, then that proportion of 1 point is given. eg a Care Home registered for a maximum of 50 service users has to reach 10 Positive Reviews to receive 1 point, if it has 7 reviews it will receive 0.7 points. 20% of the 60 registered maximum number of service users is 12. 9 Positive Reviews ÷ 12 = 0.75
  3. When a Review is submitted by someone who has previously submitted a Review, only the latest Review will count towards the Review Score.
  4. If a Care Home does not have a review in the last 24 months, then it will not have a Review Score.

Job Title: Home Manager Joined: 2017

The most important part of my role is to ensure residents are safe and living their very best lives every day at The Willows.

I love walking around the home and seeing residents smile, laugh and sing.

I feel incredibly proud of the team here, they are fantastic at looking after everybody and really have a positive impact on resident's lives. We have a good rapport with families, and they know that they can go home after a visit, knowing that their loved ones are in good hands.

As with most jobs, you need to have good time management skills and be flexible and respectful of others. It helps to be patient and have a good sense of humour too.

Before joining The Willows, I was a peripatetic manager looking after homes without a permanent manager. I have level two, three, four and five NVQs in Health and Social care and a certificate in management.

A big career highlight for me was being part of the team that won Region of the Year in 2023 and the Sales and Marketing Award in the same year.

In my free time, I love going out and about in our caravan, walking the dog and spending time with my family. When I get the chance I visit my son and two grandsons in Australia.
